2020-10-09 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hello listers,

I would really appreciate an answer and it is simply yes or no.

I just purchased a brand new Mac Mini I5 with Katalina installed on
it. I transferred all my programs etc from my iBook pro laptop but
have to go through the re-licensing etc for Sibelius First and
ProTools 2019 or 2020.

Do these programs work on Katalina? I want to make sure before I go
through the trouble of reinstating my licenses and setting up
Flotools.

Also, I am using an old clunky keyboard that is not meant for Mac. Any
recommendations on a full keyboard that is Bluetooth?

Thank you.

New Computer

2020-09-24 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hello listers,

Hope all is well! I am seeking advice on a desktop Mac. My 9-year-old
Win. 7 Dell finally said goodbye. I'm planning on bootcamping the Mac
to Win. 10. Here are my questions as it relates to Protools and
Sibelius.

1. What operating system is best for an accessible experience with PT and Sib.
2. How much memory do you recommend for a basic storage; I don't
record bands but do work on personal and professional projects as a
percussionist.
3. Should I buy the Mac from Sweetwater with PT and Sib preloaded?

Thank you. I am looking forward to the new computer with a full
keyboard as I struggled with the laptop as a recording studio.

Kindly,

Vaughn

Re: Get read of My Arranger Keyboard, but is there an alternative?

2020-01-10 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hi Rainy,

You may want to hang on to your keyboard. There does not seem to be a
way to do what you are hoping to do directly from Protools. I've been
experiementing with Band-in-a-Box.

I use this program on Windows and it requires JAWS 2020 and scripts. I
have not tried it on the Mac.

Protools not recording

2020-01-10 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hello everyone!

I am working on recording professional projects. After arming the
tracks, making sure they are selected, it is not recording. I put in
the click track and cannot hear it.

I tried using a prior project as a test but ran into the same issue.

Yes, the audio from prior projects and other sources play fine.

Any suggestions?

Re: Copy

2019-07-30 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hi Jenny,

As no one answered you I will map out the steps for you.

1. Under options menu be sure that the timeline and edit selection is checked.
2. Track and edit selection is checked, again under options menu.
3. Interact wth the track list table and deselect and reselect the
track(s) to be edited.
4. Make sure insertion follows playback is not selected under the
cursor tool cluster in the edit window.
5. Select track(s) from the track list table.
6. Go to edit window.
7. Make timeline selection from bar 1 to bar 9, if I remember
correctly you want to select the next bar as it will then select the
actual bars you want. Using the numpad, slash 1 slash 8, then hit
enter.
8. Copy.
9. Go to bar 9 and paste.
10. Repeat step 5 and multiple pasting of the track(s) selected as
many as you want. Or use the repeat function under the edit menu after
making your timeline and track(s) selection.

Turning off minute and second function

2019-05-31 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hello,

I am needing to turn off the minute and second function so that I can read
measures and beats. I selected the measure and beat function but when I go to
turn off the minute and second it keeps saying it is dimmed. I would appreciate
your suggestions as how to address this matter.

Thank you very much,

More tracks than inputs

2018-12-24 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hello, and happy Holidays!

Using PT 2018. I am wanting to create more tracks than I have inputs.
For example, I have 8 physical inputs on my Saffire but want to make
more than 8 audio tracks. What do I need to do to make this happen? My
guess is to make the already recorded track inactive.

Re: Looping in ProTools

2018-12-08 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hi,

I believe I found the problem but not the solution. Even though the track(s)
are selected, I am copying a blank or silence. I tested this by copying 4
measures of what I thought to be the drum tracks and pasted it into measures 1
instead of 5. When I played it back there was no sound and I had to undo the
copy in order to restore the drum sounds.

Hopefully this brings us closer to the solution.

Thank you in advanced,

Hi Slau,

Nope. After following your steps with creating a edit group and the rest of the
steps, still no go. Tracks are selected and working in edit window. After doing
slash 1 slash 4 enter, copy, then star (using semicolon) hitting five (I) then
enter, then pasting, still no go. Another odd aspect I noticed is when I do
star 2 or star 3 it does not take me to that spot of the recording. Nothing
happens when I hit the spacebar.
Thank you for your assistance in resolving this. I look forward to hearing more
thoughts. I am beginning to wonder if there is a underlying trouble spot. I
double checked and the star is the semicolon, am I missing a step?
*5 then enter. When in other applications such as mail I know the star is
working.
It feels we are so close to resolving this.

Hello,

Using Flo Tools, I am running into an issue with looping through
copying and pasting as well as using the repeat function (which looks
cool if it would work for me). Using the slash # slash # enter seems
to be working because it says it is copying and pasting the selected
tracks. However, when I use star then the number of the measure where
to paste, it doesn't seem to be pasting. I tested this by putting the
measure number 2 after the star and it plays a blank spot (other than
the sounding of the click track), I recorded in audio using a 4
measure phrase. I have 6 tracks selected as I am recording a drum set.
Below you will find the steps I am following along with commands being
used.
1. Under options menu, the "link timeline and edit selection" is checked.
2. Under options menu, the "link edit and track selection" is checked.
The loop playback and loop record were checked, I unchecked those, any
other settings needing to be unchecked or checked under options menu?
3. I interacted with the track list table and de-selected and
reselected the tracks to be edited/copied.
4. Under the cursor tool cluster, insertion follows playback is
unchecked. Any other check/uncheck concerns?
5. Select tracks from track list table (not sure why the repeat as I
did this in step 3)
6. Go to edit window (I was in edit window the whole time).
7. Make timeline selection from bar 1 to bar 4: Num pad slah
(apostrophe in Flo Tools), 1, slah 4, enter.
8. Copy (it says copy).
9. Go to desired measure for pasting (star (semicolon) 5, enter)
10. Paste.
11. Repeat step 10 to cover as many measures as desired when pasting,
or use option R (Fn. Option R) to enter the number of repeats after
making a timeline and track selection.

Questions:
1. Why is that when I hit star 2 to it does not seem to jump to
measure 2, just a blank spot.
2. Why is it that my copied tracks does not seem to be pasting into
measure 5 using the star number enter or the repeat function method?
I sincerely look forward to your thoughts. I be willing to arrange a
phone call or team viewer session as well. Overall, I am enjoying Flo
Tools!
Thank you,
Vaughn

Re: Flo Tools Numpad Not Installing

2018-12-04 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hi Everyone,

I made a break through last night and I hope this solution is
documented for future reference for others.
I removed Flo Tools through the uninstallment procedure, removed the
Flo Numpad from applications, and removed Key Maestro. Then I
restarted the computer just in case that helped with the removal of
residuals.
Then I reinstalled Flo Tools 2018.7 but skipped where it asks if I
wanted to install Flo Numpad. I then downloaded and installed the
separate latest Flo Num Pad application from the Flo Tools site. After
making sure boxes were checked and settings were in place for
Voiceover apple scripts and the privacy accessibility allowing
Maestro, Flo Tools etc, I opened Pro Tools.
To activate the Flo Numpad use control+slash. Bingo! Now there is a
num pad! J is 1, K is 2, L is 3 etc.

Thank you Slau, Marty, Chuck, and Chi (in a private e-mail) for your
assistance in exploring options. I strongly recommend that installing
the separate Flo Numpad as a solution for future users who may run
into the problem of installing the whole package and meeting a system
resistance.

Kindly,
Vaughn

Flo Tools Numpad Not Installing

2018-12-02 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hi Folks,

OK, after hours of frustration, I figured out the problem but not a solution.
Sierra 10.12.6
Flo Tools 2018.7
Protools 12.4
Keyboard Maestro 8.00
Problem:
Not matter how many times I check and uncheck Flo Numpad under system
preferences, security and privacy, privacy, accessibility, then unlocked to
make changes. I even removed Flo Numpad from the list and resisted it.
This is the third time of my uninstalling and reinstalling Flo Tools. I even
removed the Flo Numpad from the applications.
And yes, Voiceover is set to allowing apple scripts to control it.
Again, Flo Numpad is checked but the Flo Tools installer keeps saying it is not.

Thank you all,
Kindly,
Vaughn

I'm a bit confused because Flo Tools 18.7 comes with a NumPad and
Mouse Pointer as part of the package. Am I missing something?
Running Flo Tools 18.7, Mistro 8, Sierra operating system, Protools 12.4.
And I am not sure where to find the Menu Extras. LOL

Flo Tools numpad not working

2018-12-02 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hello folks,

I am using the latest Flo Tools, KeyboardMistro, and correct operating
system IOS 10.4. This is using a laptop keyboard. I read in the "read
me" that the FN or Option key along with J, K, L etc should activate a
numpad function. I've spent multiple hours trying to get this to work.
Ooption L keeps deactivating loop record, the same as FN Option L,
which turns it on. Any step-by-step suggestion would be helpful.

Thank you,
Vaughn

Re: Accessible sample and loop playback tool

2018-11-20 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hi John,

I, too, was looking for looping suggestions. As far as I know there is
not a looping plug-in that is accessibility. Instead, you have to
approach it in a more manual way. Here are a steps below, thanks to
Chi. Hope this helps.
1. Make sure Link Timeline and Edit Selection is checked under options menu.
 2. Make sure Link Track and Edit Selection is checked under the options menu.
3 Interact with Track list table and deselect and reselect the track
to edit even though Voiceover says it's selected.
 4. Make sure insertion follows playback is not selected under the
Cursor Tool Cluster in the edit window.
Here is the instruction on how to loop material that starts on bar 1
and ends on bar 5.
 1. Select the track(s) from track list table
 2. Go to edit window with command+equals.
 3. Make a timeline selection from bar 1 to 5: press slash on numpad,
type 1, press slash on numpad, type 5, and press enter on numpad.
 4. Copy with command+c
 5. Go to the bar where you want to paste, and press command+v
If you want to loop multiple times, you can just keep repeating the step 5.
Also you can use the repeat function on Pro Tools under the edit menu
after making track and timeline selection.

Looping

2018-11-17 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hello friends,

I am wanting to do more looping. Looking at my notes from college, I
am unable to make much sense of it. I know it involves equals, star,
and slash. What I need is the formula for selecting tracks to copy,
place the copied tracks in a spot, then pasting the tracks there.
I am working with mostly audio tracks and some for midi tracks. I am
using a full-sized keyboard, or though I should probably invest in an
actual Apple keyboard, or would purchasing an external numpad do?.
Any and all looping suggestions would be helpful.

Thank you,
Vaughn

Protools key commands not working

2018-10-19 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hello everyone,

It has been a long while since I posted and a long while since I've
done any PT projects.
A few days ago it seemed to be recording fine. I upgraded the Mac
operating system on the laptop and now it seems to be acting up. I can
hear when I tap the microphone and it plays other prior projects fine.
But now, even when I hit the spacebar there is not clicking (the click
track is there). None of the F+ number seems to be working. All audio
tracks are armed, Saffire is the source of input and output. Any
suggestions? I considered calling Sweetwater as I thought perhaps it
has to do with the Saffire software but I thought I ask on here first.

Thank you very much,

Re: Which Mac model makes ProTools happy?

2016-08-08 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hi Rocco,

I have a 2015 MacBook Pro and it runs Protools fine. Give some thought
to 2015 or 2016. Regarding work stations, you could use your desktop
for heavy projects or for working on editing projects by taking them
off of a laptop, giving you room to continue being a portable sound
studio. It may be helpful to own both. It sounds like the 2012 and
2014 are not going to serve you well anymore.

I'm interested in hearing what others have to suggest.

Re: Plz help me.

2016-03-22 Thread Vaughn Brown
Well, you will need to find a vender in your area who sells Protools,
either in person or online. What computer are you using? A Mac or
Windows operating system? Protools works on the Mac with Voiceover.
Protools is very expensive, too, so see if the cheaper midi programs
may work for you. We cannot help you on the list to the detail of
training you want. You will need someone, preferably in person, to
help you. I am sure you can find such a person.

Re: creating a dynamic click track

2016-03-19 Thread Vaughn Brown
I recall a time when a band I was a member of asked me to record a
drum track for them.
I went to the studio and set my kit up, put the headphones on. I asked
for a click track but the band recorded without one. So, my challenge
was keeping up with their slight tempo changes... The poor engineer
ended up moving some drum parts around because it was off by a
sixteenth of a beat... Geeze...

I've been with Sweetwater for four years now and they are truly the best.
I have a feeling that Sweetwater is going to become the "blind

Re: Powered Microphones

Hi Nick and Slau,

Yes, that is what I was looking for. I am in contact with Sweetwater
now to try and figure out which is the pad and which is the
instrument. I really appreciate your answer.

Chris, and Chris, perhaps I did not write my concerns clearly. Pad on
and instrument off is what may be the problem here regarding the
actual microphones.

Kindly,
Vaughn

Powered Microphones

2016-02-10 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hello folks,

As I am preparing my studio for professional recording I’ve noticed that the
powered microphones are giving me trouble. Even when the input knobs are all
the way off the microphones still is picking up sound during the recording.
When I have them at the lowest setting it seems to be clipping on the hi-hat
and crash.

The other microphones, none-powered, are working as they should. I understand
the bleeding is typical but these powered microphones are picking up way too
much information. I do not want them to pick up the entire drum kit but rather
focus on the hi-hat and crash. Should I switch over and purchase none-powered
microphones for maximum control? Or is there a way I can address these powered
microphones.

I am not sure what kind they are. They are shaped long and narrow and are meant
for drums and percussion.

Thank you for your insight.

Vaughn

The vocals do sound a little faded on the softer finishes of certain
lines. But, looking at it from a blended point of view, then it is
very nicely blended.

I like the easy feel of the music. It takes a lot of work and time to
pull this off so I raise a glass to you, your wife, and your recording

bouncing tracks

2016-01-27 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hello folks,

Firstly, thank you those who helped me resolve my Protools challenges. I’ve
upgraded to PT 12.4 successfully. Sweet Water is a great company for tech
support!

So, I am back to square one, kind of. I now see the bounce after pressing
VO+shift+M. Even though all the tracks are selected it is only wanting to
bounce the one track that my cursor is focused on. My goal is to bounce all the
tracks at once into mp3 and wave format but on an individual level so that
someone who does not have PT can mix and edit them within their own recording
software.

Do I need to bounce each track once at a time? If so, I’m OK with that but it
would be time consuming.

Thank you folks,
Vaughn

Re: activating license

2016-01-23 Thread Vaughn Brown
Thank you Slao,

I actually already downloaded the software and its extras from the
subscription's page. But it is when I launch Protools it says I do not
have any licenses for Protools 12 and to click on this thing. It
brings up the Avid website but I cannot figure out where to purchase
the actual license.

I'll check with Sweetwater and see if I did purchase PT from them when
I was in college. I do not remember.

Kindly,

Chris,

I am using OS YOSEMITE. I just find it annoying that every time Protools is
upgraded you have to transfer the license from one to the other, and this not

Hello,

All of the tracks are selected in the table list view under the edit mode. The

duplicate, delete, new, and hide and make inactive. I still do not see any
bounce. All in all, there are only eight options under this menu. If it is

bouncing individual tracks

2016-01-14 Thread Vaughn Brown
Hello folks,

I am trying to figure out how to bounce individuals tracks into a wave format
in order to send to my bassist for mixing.

So far all the tracks are selected. But I was told that pressing VO+shift M
would bring up a bounce option along with the usual rename, delete etc. But I
am not seeing it. Export doesn’t have a conversion to wave, either. I am using
Protools 11.3.1

Re: Programming Drums

2015-12-19 Thread Vaughn Brown
Welcome, Nathan,

I would record the drum loops in a live recording, meaning use the
loops as long as the song is. If you are worried about not getting
your sixteenth notes in in a timely manner, slow the tempo down, then
speed it back up once you are done quantizing it. Also, these notes
from a friend may help.
To select start of a bar, go to edit window and press numbed slash
then the bar number, then enter, all on numbed
to select the end bar, press slash twice then bar number, enter
to select set number of bars from current location, press slash three
times then number of bars then enter, all on numbed

examples:
select bar 1 through 5:
a. press slash 1 slash 5
b. (if changing start and end points separately) press slash 1, then
enter. slash slash 5, then enter.
c. Press slash 3 times, then 4 (for 4 bars total to be selected) then
press enter.

Copy and paste works the same way as you would expect, just make sure
the tracks you want to be copied are selected in the track list table.

Hope this helps.
Vaughn

Re: Pro Tools accessories

2015-11-30 Thread Vaughn Brown
I do not use the mixing software as I use Protools to do the mixing. I
actually do not if the mixing software for Pro40 is accessible. I
think it is, though.
Have you gone into a music shop that carries such hardwares to
physically check them out? That is how I did my research; took
reccomendations from others and then ventured into some music stores
to examine them. Then I made my purchase online.

Re: Pro Tools accessories

2015-11-30 Thread Vaughn Brown
Andy,

sweetwater.com is a great place to buy. Depending on the channels I
think the Saffire Pro40 is a good start. It connects using Firewire,
has eight channel inputs, two outputs for speakers, two headphone
jacks, and consists of knobs for level controls and buttons for
phamtom powered microphones.
I also use an Axium keyboard, which uses a USB to plug into the
computer. As for the guitar hardware someone else will have to answer
that. Sweetwater customer service is remarkable. They've worked with
blind musicians before and if you describe what you need they will
most certainly match you up. Explain that you need the most hands-on,
knob and button oriented hardware and they be delighted to help. I do
not have any bad experience and everything I won, keyboard, control
surface, microphones etc are from them.

I hope this gives you a start.

Best of luck and do feel free to ask questions. That is why we have this list.

Re: Hello, newbie having trouble with getting started and pro tools.

2015-11-20 Thread Vaughn Brown
OK,

You may find the solution under the Mac's sounds, output and input.
See if your Mac can see your this device. Set it as default. Then look
in Protools under set up hardware. You may have to get Protools to
"see" the device, too.

I hope this helps.

Re: audio interface recommendations

2015-11-17 Thread Vaughn Brown
Brian,

I am using Line 6 with Saffire Pro40. It has gain knobs, 8 channels,
two headphone jacks, 3 USB ports and I enjoy using it because it is
easy to learn and manage.

What makes you curious?

Re: Question about using same PT license on two DAW's

2015-11-16 Thread Vaughn Brown
Even when I was a student of Berklee I never experienced a discount so
I don't think students get discounts in general. That be nice, too, as
I am a long-distant student of Hadley.
