[QA] New volunteer introduction

2017-09-24 Thread neerajvonline
Hi all,

My name is Neeraj. I am from INDIA, Kerala.
I am a graduate in electronics and communication engineering.
Currently doing a short term course in software testing.
I am interested to contribute QA works in Apache OpenOffice.

Thanks for adding me.

I think i should start volunteering by reviewing incoming defect reports
and attempting to "confirm" them.
Please provide me some small batch of reports for the review process.

Regards ,
Neeraj

Thank you Dennis and Andrea for all your help!

Yes, I am on Windows 10.

I am asking about the VM because I read somewhere in all these links that
the app could corrupt the computer, which I would prefer to avoid ;).

Do we have an estimate on when builds will be released to Windows so I can
contribute?

Welcome!

1. Is this project still going on? When I checked the QA page, I saw
that the last entry was made in 2013.

What page? There are many outdated pages.
http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-qa.html is quite OK.

2. If yes, which feature(s) would need the most testing, or which
feature(s) have the most chances to contain bugs (so I can contribute and
not just test rock solid, if those ever exist, features).

As soon as we get the daily builds for Windows available again, we will
want to test new translations and several bugfixes. You are on Windows,
right?

3. Also, in the documentation section, it is mentioned that Virtual Box
is recommended.

The page above suggests VirtualBox as a "more sophisticated approach".
This is correct. Most volunteers are not expected to run their tests in
a Virtual Machine. So don't worry about this technicality, you can
perfectly start by installing development builds on your own system.

  Andrea.

[orcmid]

I can only answer for myself.

I assume you mean a license Guest OS installed in a VM.

I only have two installed guests for the moment.

I have one Windows 10 Insider installed under the Hyper-V Manager that is part
of Windows 10 Pro on a machine that has the necessary hardware capability for
Hyper-V. I obtained that license during the Windows 10 Insider Technical
Preview (and at the time the Hyper-V host was a now-upgraded Windows 8.1
device).

I also have one Windows XP guest installed under Virtual Box on another
machine. The XP license is one I have from an MSDN subscription. This is not
for testing though - I need it as a web-development server. Virtual Box does
not work well on the machine that has Hyper-V. The advantage of Hyper-V over
Virtual Box is that Hyper-V will install 64-bit versions of Windows on a 64-bit
Host.

I don't have a current MSDN subscription, so I don't know what OS licenses
there are for test use at this time. If you are at an academic institution,
there may be suitable subscriptions available via the institution. Apache
Committers have been eligible for free Microsoft MSDN subscriptions in the
past. Those generally provide licenses to several operating-system
installations for test purposes, with OS install ISOs available for download
from the MSDN site. (I notice that I have existing keys for all versions from
Windows XP through Windows 8 but not 8.1 and 10, released after my last MSDN
subscription expired.)

I don't know of any other avenue in the case of Windows guests for installation
in/as VMs.

For testing on Linux of course, the easy solution is to install under Virtual
Box on whatever host you have available.

I don't know what solutions are available for running OSX as a guest OS in a VM.

Thank you Dennis for your answer.

I definitely agree that VMs have a lot of great advantages, as you
mentioned.

I checked the Win 10 insider license and I don't think it is a possibility.

What do you guys do? Do you have a licensed VM for your testing?

RE: Introduction as QA volunteer

2016-02-08 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
I think the recommendation for using a VM is so that a machine used for
production is not necessarily disturbed when conducting tests that may lead to
crashes that have collateral damage.

And, a VM can be backed up and reconstituted more readily.

I also suspect that it was written by Mac/POSIX-oriented developers who only
use Windows and maybe some Linux flavors in VMs [;<).

Whatever the reason, you are correct about licensing requirements for the guest
OS.

 - Dennis

PS: For Windows 10, and a VM on hardware that is capable of satisfying the
Windows 10 hardware/VM requirements, you might be able to obtain a Windows
Insider licensed install. You might need Windows 7 or later on the host PC
though. (This arrangement may have been changed since it worked for the
Windows 10 Technical Preview.)

Introduction as QA volunteer

2016-02-07 Thread Benoit Goderre
Hi!

I am thankful for this opportunity to join the team of volunteers as a
Quality Assurance Specialist. My name is Benoit Goderre and I have four
years of experience in the software industry. My favorite technique is
exploratory testing.

As I wish to start to contribute to the project, I have several questions:

   1. Is this project still going on? When I checked the QA page, I saw
that the last entry was made in 2013.
   2. If yes, which feature(s) would need the most testing, or which
feature(s) have the most chances to contain bugs (so I can contribute and
not just test rock solid, if those ever exist, features).
   3. Also, in the documentation section, it is mentioned that Virtual Box
is recommended. While I have a decent amount of experience with VMWare (and
I don't think Virtual Box should be much different), the usual problem lies
in the licensing when it comes to VM. Is there some information on this
   topic?

Thanks again for your time and I wish to speak with you soon.

Best Regards,

Benoit

I hope to be of use and to get to know you all a little bit!

I am a software tester who's been working with open source software for 10

I tend to focus on API and database testing but I'd be pleased to do some
UI testing as well.

If anyone can point me to an area in need of testing, that would be great.

Kind regards,

Amy Brown

Hello All,

This is Seetaram Hegde. Thanks for allowing me to get involved in this
project. I wanted to get involved in QA activities of some open source
project and get to know about the Apache OpenOffice project. I am very
happy to introduce myself to the QA group here at Apache OpenOffice. I live
in Bangalore, India and working as a Principle Software Engineer for a
large retailer. I have 8+ years of experience in software testing with
expertise in test automation as well as manual testing. In the current
organization, primarily I am working on automating test cases of RESTful
web services. I also have experience in end-to-end testing where I have to
analyze the requirements and come up with test cases and then find out the
feasible test cases for automation. Then automate them with the chosen tool
(currently we are using Apache packages and Core JAVA for automating
RESTful APIs). I also have experience in Selenium automation (both Selenium
RC and Webdriver). I will be happy to take up any QA task (either manual
testing or automation). Thanks again for allowing me to join this open
source project.

Hello Minal,

Welcome to the Apache OpenOffice project and our QA mailing list!

You are not currently subscribed to the mailing list, so your post was
delayed by moderation, and you are not receiving posts from others
yet. So please subscribe to this mailing list by sending an email to
qa-subscr...@openoffice.apache.org.

This and other useful facts are covered in our New Volunteer
Orientation web site, which gives some good background info on Apache,
Apache OpenOffice and the project:

http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/

If you have worked on an open source project before you can probably
skim over the initial modules and focus more on the "Intro to QA"
page:

http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-qa.html

That will lead you to getting signed up for our mailing list, bug
tracking database, etc.

When you get that far, let me know and I can add your Bugzilla account
to to "qa-team" group so you have additional privileges in that
database.

Hello Anett,

Welcome to the Apache OpenOffice project and our QA team!

We have a webpage full of useful information and "start up" tasks for
new volunteers:
http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-qa.html

I recommend that you read through that page and follow the
instructions there. This will help you get set up with a Bugzilla
account and explain the tasks we do and the process we follow.

If you have any questions when reviewing this material, please ask.
We have many volunteers on the QA team who can help you.

Also, when you are done reviewing that page, be sure to add your
information to our wiki here:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/QA+Testing+Preferences

This helps us understand what platforms and features you are able to
test. Then I can send you some bug reports to review. This will
help get your more familiar with our process.

Thanks!

Hello Alena, and welcome to the Apache OpenOffice project!

I've added you to the "qa-team" in Bugzilla. Now you have extra
permissions to edit bugs, change their status, etc.

Please add your information to the wiki page here:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/QA+Testing+Preferences

I'll send you a set of user-submitted bugs that you can try to confirm
with AOO 3.4.1 on your Windows 7 machine. The detailed instructions
for this are on the "Intro to QA" page under the "Easy QA Task:
Confirm New Defect Reports" section.

Give it a try and let me know on the mailing list if you have any questions.

Thanks!

I've updated the Introduction to QA page based on the common questions

recommend that new volunteers take another read, especially in the

added more material there which should make the process clearer.

I added your account to the "qa-team" Bugzilla group. This allows you
to edit bugs reports.

If you can tell me what platforms you can test on I will send you a

Hello Diego, Welcome to the Apache OpenOffice project, and especially
to the QA Team!

We have some webpages that were written to help new volunteers get
started. It sounds like you started (finished?) the "Introduction to
QA" module?

I see that you have already created a Bugzilla account. I just added
you to the "qa-team" group in Bugzilla, so you now have some
additional permissions.

If you can let me know what operating systems you can test with I can
assign you a small batch (10 or so) user-submitted defect reports to
review. Trying to confirm these reports helps us reduce our backlog.
It also helps you get more familiar with our bug tracking system and
the kinds of common issues our users report.

Thanks!

Hello Arriana!

A good way to learn more about Apache OpenOffice and how the project
works, and how to help with QA, is to review our New Volunteer
Orientation modules which are here on the website:

http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/

I recommend especially that you skim the Level 1 and Level 2 modules,
especially if you are new to Apache and working on an open source
project. And then spend some some time with the Intro to QA module.
This will help you get signed up for our issue tracker (Bugzilla) and
give you some other important background information.

Once you have the Bugzilla account set up, let me know your userid and
what platforms you are able to test with. I can then assign you some
bug reports to review.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Regards,

-Rob

It might help to reduce your spreadsheet to the bare essentials needed
to illustrate the issue and then enter a defect report in Bugzilla:

That is the nice thing about open source software. Volunteers work on
things that interest them, and often that means they "scratch their
own itch". With a diverse enough group of volunteers, we are able
then to prioritize what gets attention. This is different than the
big commercial packages, where unless you are buying a million dollar
enterprise contract you won't be heard.

Excellent. And if you want to explore volunteering with QA more
generally in the project, I'd recommend reviewing our New Volunteer
Orientation modules, with an emphasis on the Level 1 and Level 2
material as well as Intro to QA. Obviously, with your experience I'm
not going to teach you anything you don't already know about QA
methodology and process. But there is some useful info there on
cultural/social topics related to this project, how it is run,
decision making, mailing list etiquette, etc. So it is worth going
over once.

Hello -- Introduction

2013-01-14 Thread Julia Mandeville

Hello All
Ihave just signed up to be part of the Open Office QA team.
Here is a brief introduction to myself and why I decided to do this.

My name is Julia Mandeville and I live in Londonderry, NH, USA
I was a QA Engineer for Sybase (now aSAP company) for 14 years from
Jan 1996 to Feb 2010- working mainly on the Sybase SQL Server/ASE
Product and with the Component Integration Services (connecting to other
ASEs, to Oracle, to DB2, to Sybase IQ, to Sybase ASA, etc)
I have been a Stay-At-Home-Mom(more like stay-at-school, Mom's
Taxi) since, and am nowthe Box Tops Coordinator for my daughter's school.

I have spreadsheets forboth the Box Tops and for my daughter's Girl
Scout Cookie salesand I formerly had them working perfectly in MS Excel.
Then I had to have my laptop worked on and it ended up entailing the
replacement of my hard drive and with that my installation of MS Office
which I had gotten with the purchase of the laptop. I have misplaced my
original install disks and am unwilling to spend the money to replace
what I should already have, so I am now using Open Office. For the
basics it is quite compatible, however, I have found that some
formulas/conditional formatting which were so easy in MS Excel, just
don't work in Open Office Calc. I am hoping that through this process,
I am able to find the information I need to truely learn Open Office
Calc so that I can use it to its potential.

One of the sets of issues I have found has been with conditional
formatting. (I am just now downloading 3.4.1, so I'll see if its been
fixed/added) is in my Box Tops spreadsheet. I have the totals for each
class and the classes are grouped togetherby floor K-4; 5-8-- at the end
of the year the class on each floor with the mostBox Tops gets a Dress
Down Day (its a small (1 classroom/grade) Catholic School) - so any
non-uniform day can be a big deal. With MS Excel, I was able to take say
the K-4 and with conditional formatting have it color code min to max in
gradation (it would let you pick a color for min and a color for max and
it would set the gradation for the values inbetween). With Open Office
Calc, I am not only not able to do this but I have also found that in
selecting a column of numbers (saythe sheet for the 7th grade students
selecting the column for the 2nd Quarter - each row is for 1 student;
not all students participate each quarter) and with conditional
formatting have it highlight the max -- for me it was highlighting the
0s [zeros] (not max - but multiple instances of the min value)

These 2 are just a few of the frustrations I have runinto recently with
Open Office Calc.

I will do my best to show the problems I find, and to explain them as
simply as possiblewith recreatable steps.

Thank you

Julia

Hello Tom, and welcome to the Apache OpenOffice project!

It sounds like you have a good background in QA and we would benefit
greatly from your skills and experience.

I'd recommend quickly skimming over our New Volunteer Orientation modules here:

http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/

Although they won't teach you anything that you don't already know
about QA, given your background, it will give you some important
background related to Apache, how projects are run, decision making,
i.e., the softer, cultural/social side of a volunteer-run open source
project.

The Intro to QA modules will give you an overview of our test workflow
and tools and will get you set up with an Bugzilla account:
http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-qa.html

Not mentioned there (since it is a more advanced topic) is our vclAuto
test automation tool. This uses JUnit and Java code to define test
cases that can then be run against our OpenOffice GUI. So that might
be a good area to look into given your interests. More information on
that tool is on the wiki, which unfortuantly appears to be down right
now. But you can check here when it comes back up:

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/vcla

Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi Alan,

You don't need a virtual PC environment to start QA work, but it can
be very useful. I've used VirtualBox and VMWare.

The advantage of a virtualized test environment is the easy ability to
switch from from configuration to another. So my main test machine
runs Windows 7 64-bit. But I have virtual machines for clean installs
of Windows 2000, Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. I also
have virtual machines with current and older versions of OpenOffice
installed. So I can quickly bring up a machine with any of these
configurations to confirm a bug report. I also have a range of Linux
VM's.

But note that most bugs we receive are functionality-related and not
dependent on the fine details of the configuration. For those bugs
any stable installation of the latest OpenOffice is fine. But for
install/upgrade-related or platform-dependent bugs, virtual machines
are a huge time-saver.

Another benefit is that this isolates your test environment from your
working environment. This might not be a big deal if you use a PC
only for testing. But if, like me, you do email and general work on
the same machine you testing, using virtual machines is a good idea.
For example, I never need to worry about instabilities in a snapshot
build of OpenOffice causing problems for my working environment, or
causing document corruption, etc.

-Rob

Hi Alan,

I've added you to the qa-team group in Bugzilla, so you should be able
to modify all defect reports now.

I encourage you to read through the Intro to QA module here:
http://openoffice.apache.org/orientation/intro-qa.html

You'll see in that page a set of "Easy QA Tasks". I'm trying to get
all new volunteers to get some experience with the "Confirm New Defect
Reports" task. When you are ready for that, let me know what
platform(s) you can test with and I'll assign you some reports to
review.

Thanks!

Hi Alan,

Good morning Rob,

VirtualBox for testing?

It depends on what you will test. In some cases it is sufficient to make
an administrative installation and edit the bootstrap-file. But when you
will e.g. test the installation process itself, you need a system, which
is separated from your daily work system. Other examples are testing
several desktop environments like small screens, high dpi, dark desktop
themes.

Kind regards

Hello Alexander!

I've added you to the qa-team in Bugzilla, so you should now have
additional permissions, including the ability to edit all bugs
reports.

If you tell me what operating systems you are able to test with, I can
send you some defect reports to review and confirm. That is a good
way to get started, since it involves you with real bug reports and
our issue tracking database.

Welcome to the project. As part of going through the "Intro to QA"

When you complete that step, please send your ID to me so I can add

Please review the open tasks in Bugzilla https://issues.apache.org/ooo/
and see if you can confirm the reports so that bugs can be escalated to
developers and QA Managers. These are the tasks that I see fit for the

Re: Volunteer Introduction

2013-01-02 Thread Rob Weir
Hello Avanish !

Sorry for the delayed response -- many of us were away over the
Christmas and New Year's holidays.

Thanks for noticing our "call for volunteers". We have a major
release (Apache OpenOffice 4.0) scheduled for April. We are trying to
build up our test capabilities before then, so we can ensure that this
release is of the highest quality.

I don't know if you saw this yet, but we have some "new volunteer
orientation modules" that you should review, at your leisure, to get
an overview of Apache and how things work here. There is also an
introduction to QA there, including some good "starter tasks" for new
volunteers to look at.

The modules were designed to be done in order, but I think it is also
fine to jump around and explore what interests you. This is supposed
to be fun!

Here is a link to the orientation modules:

Welcome Brad, John and all the others who joined the OpenOffice QA team
today!

All new volunteers should subscribe to the QA mailing list or they will
miss announcements: just send an empty e-mail message to
qa-subscr...@openoffice.apache.org and respond to the confirmation
request you will receive. Do it now, since all QA activities will be
coordinated on this list: when we plan extensive pre-release testing, we
will post announcements and requests for help here.

Also make sure you have read
http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/orientation/intro-qa.html
and stay tuned for further information; but you can already start with
the "Easy QA tasks" mentioned on that page and, of course, feel free to
write to qa@openoffice.apache.org (this mailing list) if you have any
doubts.

Thanks,
  Andrea.
