[Qgis-user] FOSS4G North America now open for registration

2024-07-16 Per discussione Randal Hale via QGIS-User
Sorry for the crossposting this morning and extra unnecesary email for a
lot of you - but I'm guessing a lot of United States users are here and
not on the QGIS-us list.

FOSS4G North America (https://www.foss4gna.org) is now open for
registration. We will attempt a meet and greet in STL similar to
Baltimore. So please come meet your fellow QGIS users.

Thanks, that’s very useful, did not think that using the Terminal I would get
that option!

Hi

Is this not a setting option for MAC? I don't have a MAC anymore, but
thought that you could change the parameters/settings to allow multiple
instances of an app, as the default setting is a single instance.

Hi,
Yes, now only the active versions of QGIS have a pyQGIS doc on our website. Old
pyQGIS docs are now served as zip files people can download and use
(https://github.com/qgis/pyqgis-api-docs-builder/tags). Why this? Because many
times we reached the max size allowed for Github pages, resulting in failures
to update the docs. See
https://github.com/qgis/pyqgis-api-docs-builder/issues/104.

Hi Marta,

As part of the new qgis.org website, all redirects to the github.io pages have
been rewritten.
So in recent days, while testing, it is possible that some versions did
temporarily not work.

Which version exactly are you looking for? Because these:

https://qgis.org/pyqgis/master/

https://qgis.org/pyqgis/3.38/

https://qgis.org/pyqgis/3.34/

For me just work.

https://qgis.org/pyqgis/3.36/ apparently not.

But looking at this commit message (of the code that builds the api docs):

https://github.com/qgis/pyqgis-api-docs-builder/commit/e92253bcb7e839542c50ed1b5de67e3fc6cfd4f8

it says:

only publish master,stable,ltr

Not sure why this is decided though?

So maybe that is your problem? You are maybe running a non master/stable/ltr
version?

Re: [Qgis-user] Question about .dxf Import

2024-07-12 Per discussione Nigel Berjak via QGIS-User

Hi Julia

I can't remember whether 2.x allowed it, although I think it did,
however I think all 3.x versions incorporate this function. You access
it from the Project menu, then click on Import/Export then Import layers
from DXF/DWG. It requires that you import them into a Geopackage.

I hope this helps.

[Qgis-user] PyGIS documentation down

2024-07-12 Per discussione Marta Ducamp via QGIS-User
Hello Qgis users!
I've been working on a QGIS plugin the past few days and using eht PyQGIS
documentation a lot. Since a few days it looks like a lot of documentation is
not accessible anymore.

I'm sorry if you have been discussing this issue for days now, but I'm
wondering if this is a common issue, and if not, how could I access the doc
again?

Thanks for your help.

[Qgis-user] Issue - Changing location of the profile folder.

2024-07-11 Per discussione Mik Biernacki via QGIS-User
Hi,

Hopefully, this is the correct e-mail to sent issues like this to, if not
please do let me know the appropriate alternative.

Is it possible to change the location of QGIS Active Profile Folder?

A quick Google suggested that creating a new environment variable
QGIS_USER_PROFILE with variable value being the path to the profile folder
should work but for some reason that does not work.

I did restart QGIS multiple times, the path does contain profile data. I know
it didn't work because the profile name says my name and if it did work it
should have changed to my co-worker's name. I thought it might be an issue with
the location of the new profile folder being on a network drive, however,
changing the plugin location worked with the same network drive.

I'm using QGIS 3.36.3 on Windows 10

Many thanks,

[Qgis-user] QGIS.org new website now online

2024-07-11 Per discussione Tim Sutton via QGIS-User
Hi all

拾 The new website is now online! Visit https://qgis.org to try it out. We
have spent a *lot* of time trying to QA things but undoubtedly there will
still be some *gremlins* in the works. Please file issues here
<https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-Hugo/issues> if you find things that are
*substantive* issues (i.e. a broken link, spelling error) and not 'reviews'
of our work please. If you have other comments or suggestions for
improvements, we much prefer that they be accompanied by *PR's* which
implement your proposed improvements to keep our workload down and the
issue queue short.

 *We would love to get some more representative images/screenshots for
the front and top level pages, so PR's addressing those will be treated
with priority.*

Thank you so much to the Kontur team (Aliaksandra, Andrei, Nadzeya,
Tigran, Darafei and more!), the members of the website working group that
we formed, Anniina, Lova, Richard, Jürgen, Anita, Andreas. Amy, Thiasha,
Jeremy Prior, and the many others (apologies for not naming you
individually) who contributed ideas, work, and support in the process.

 Please note that your browser / ISP / DNS server and similar may be
caching qgis.org and the DNS entries related to it. Before reporting an
issue:

1. Try an anonymous browser to see if things work normally there
2. Try clearing your cache in your browser
3. Potentially you may need to wait a little for DNS propagation to complete

 Please note that we made the decision NOT to translate the site into
languages other than english. If you are an official country user group, we
encourage you to:

1. Advise the PSC of your intention to host a localized copy of the site
2. Fork the web site repo https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-Hugo
3. Translate the content pages on your fork
4. Host your fork on your country domain e.g. qgis.id
5. Advise us when your fork is online, we will cross link to your site from
QGIS.org

Thank you,

Regards

Tim

[Qgis-user] Showing 2D-Data in QGIS Elevation Profile View QGIS 3.38

2024-07-11 Per discussione Drexel Peter via QGIS-User
Hallo,
In the Elevation-settings of the Layer-Properties of a 3D-Shapefile (shapeZ) I
can select one of the 3 Clamping-Types "Clamped to Terrain", "Relative to
Terrain" or "Absolute".
In the Elevation-settings of the Layer-Properties of a 2D-Shapefile I can only
select one of 2 Clamping-Types "Clamped to Terrain" or "Absolute".
I want to draw 2D-Line Features (in my case Contour-Lines) "draped" on the
Terrain-Line in the Elevation Profile View. Each time the Profile-Line crosses
a Contour-Line a Point-Symbol should be drawn "on" the Profile-Line in the
Elevation Profile View.

* When I select "Clamped to Terrain" the Point-Symbol is drawn at
Elevation 0m

* When I select "Absolute" the Point-Symbol is again drawn at Elevation
0m

* For 2D-Data I cannot select "Relative to Terrain"

In my Point of View "Clamped to Terrain" should do the trick but it does not...
Is there anyone out there who can help or at least is able to replicate the
behavior?

Regards
Peter

Re: [Qgis-user] Import German population data

2024-07-06 Per discussione Jonathan Berschauer via QGIS-User

Hello Bernhard,

this was the perfect tip! Thank you very much, you saved my day!

At first, I struggled with the wrong files (on gdz.bkg.bund.de they
served directly only UTM32), but then i found the whole download
directory at

https://daten.gdz.bkg.bund.de/produkte/sonstige/geogitter/aktuell/

There I located the LAEA files (for example
DE_Grid_ETRS89-LAEA_1km.gpkg.zip ).
Using the field calculator, I was able to create new fields and then
match the data between the different layers.

Thank you very much!

Hallo Jonathan,

you can import the data as points using the X and Y fields (see manual
[1]) but I suspect you want to display them as raster data
(Hektarraster). Therefore you need to get the Hektarraster 1km grid data
(from here I guess [2]). Each grid cell has an identifier (Field id);
change your Gitter_ID_1km field's contents (or create a new field) to
match the id field and join your csv data to the Hektarraster - done.

Hi,

I just copied you example lines to a text file, drag-dropped it into
QGIS, used “Create points layer from table”, set the coordinate system
to 3035, X,Y according to your settings, and got two points in Flensburg.

2024-07-03 Per discussione Huesmann, Michaela via QGIS-User
Hello,

ah, yes, now I found it. I was just searching at the layers context menu, not
for the classes. Thank you Stefan!

[cid:image004.jpg@01DACD26.28D6D470]

First I did only found this function for group visability.

By the way: there is a typo in the German language version. Turning layers on
and off in written the same. But one must be called „inaktiv“.

Maybe someone could correct this at some point. 

Hi Michaela,

if you select one of the categorized items in the layertree you can

toggle the visibility with the context menu (right mouse) and choose

"toogle items" or? "Hide all items"

2024-07-02 Per discussione afernandez via QGIS-User

Hello,
I need to programmatically render a velocity field. The closest example
that I was able to find is
https://opengislab.com/blog/2020/10/10/wind-vector-mapping-and-animation-in-qgis
although I don't need the animation feature. The problem is that, even
after reading the DeveloperCookbook, I'm still unsure how to code some of
the visual steps, particularly when it comes to defining the symbology. I
was wondering if anyone knows of any example involving velocity field
rendering or has any tips on how to define & use the symbology.
Thanks.

if you select one of the categorized items in the layertree you can
toggle the visibility with the context menu (right mouse) and choose
"toogle items" or  "Hide all items"

I'll second this, and say that a filename with varying contents is bad
practice and there should be no qgis-foo-ltr.ext. Standard practice in
distributing software is just to use version numbers.

If you want to have a latest button in a web page to point to it, that's
fine, but it would be nice if it had the name it would get visible, and
if hovering over it would show it.

It would be very helpful if the Mac download file names included the
version info.

For example:
 "qgis-macos_3_34_7-ltr.dmg"   instead of just "qgis-macos-ltr.dmg"

As currently named the only way to determine the version is to download
the entire .dmg.
Not a problem for those with high bandwidth connections, but a 2 hour
download for those of us still on DSL.

After being prompted by QGIS' "there is a newer version" message, I have
often downloaded what was described on the website as the latest version
only to discover it was not.

Cordially,
Garth Fletcher

[Qgis-user] Drill hole labelling in the Elevation window

2024-06-29 Per discussione Grant Boxer via QGIS-User
I would like to know if we can apply labels to the items in the Elevation
profile window? I would like to display values down a drill hole but I
cannot seem to find any settings for the elevation profile window to do
this. Is this something that still needs development? Great that we can show
drill holes in cross section now in 3.38 and using the Geoscience plugin to
calculate the 3D coordinates.

Hi, I’m running QGIS 3.36.3 on Mac OS Ventura 13.6.7 Intel. My version of QGIS
has informed me there is an update for QGIS to version 3.38. I have downloaded
the “new” update several times over the past day or so and on each installation
it installs as QGIS 3.36.3

Hi Andrew,
unfortunately the .dmg macOS installers for both QGIS 3.38.0 and QGIS
3.34.8 are currently not yet available due to the lack of new
certificates to sign them with [1], while the QGIS Website and QGIS
Desktop incorrectly advertise them even for macOS users.

The issue has been already reported to the qgis.developer mailing list
[2] and to the GitHub repository of the QGIS Website [3].

A pull request has been already submitted [4], but not yet applied, in
order to make the QGIS Website actually advertise the currently
available QGIS version 3.36.3 and 3.34.7 for macOS users.

You will find the QGIS 3.38.0 .dmg installer
(qgis_pr_final-3_38_0_*.dmg) for macOS at [5] when available.

Consider that you can currently install QGIS 3.38.0 on macOS
using MacPorts [6].

Regards.

GPXZ (https://www.gpxz.io/) has good documentation of the best available free

They use 30m Copernicus DEM for Nepal, you could also use 30m NASA SRTM as an
alternative.

[Qgis-user] trip report from recent toot about plugin blog page

2024-06-25 Per discussione Greg Troxel via QGIS-User
Recently I saw a toot announcing a blog post about new/updated plugins.
This is comments about my experience from that, hoping it is helpful.

1) It's great there was a toot (mastodon) instead of on some centralized
site where you have to agree to surveillance to be allowed to see it.

2) It directed me to

  https://blog.qgis.org/2024/06/24/plugin-update-december-23-to-january-24/

and on firefox/android, I got a cookie consent banner. While I
understand that things are bit crazy either due to GDPR or fears about
it, the banner did not explain what sort of cookies. As I'm sure you
all understand, a cookie set by blog.qgis.org that records dark mode vs
not, preferred language is totally ok, a cookie for self-hosted
analytics iffy, a cookie for surveillance-based analytics (google) bad,
and anything from a surveillance-based advertising company or data
broker, very bad.

I don't see this banener my desktop (uBlock Origin to the rescue), but
FWIW blog.qgis.org shows blocked loads from:

https://static.cloudflareinsights.com/beacon.min.js/vcd15cbe7772f49c399c6a5babf22c1241717689176015

https://s0.wp.com/wp-content/mu-plugins/widgets/eu-cookie-law/templates/style.css?m=1642463000i=yes
  https://stats.wp.com/w.js?67

https://widgets.wp.com/likes/master.html?ver=20240625#ver=20240625=https://blog.qgis.org

I sort these into bad, semi-ok but annoying, iffy, and perhaps bad but
it would take me reading too much js to figure it out.

I am not a GDPR cookie expert, but my impression is that a "we use
cookies; you must click accept" is solidly noncompliant, that the user
must be able to reject non-essential (advertising/tracking!) cookies,
and that doing so must be just as easy as accepting.

3) I found the updates page interesting, but I also found that many of
the descriptions were really not that helpful. For many, I couldn't
tell what plugin did. Some had great descriptions. Having read these,
it's clear to me that descriptions should be written assuming that the
reader is generally familiar with GIS and qgis, but has no idea what the
plugin does.

There were some that were great and I'd like to highlight those.

  OpenLog

High performance drillhole visualization QGIS module supporting 3D,
  cross-section, and log views.

  MunsellRGB

  Munsell code to sRBG conversion.

Both very brief, but I immediately understand enough to know whether I
want to look further. Both sound very useful -- but solve problems I
don't have.

Here's one that is partially helpful:

  Benthic Terrain Modeler

Analyzes benthic terrain for the purposes of classifying surficial
seafloor characteristics that may be used in studies of benthic
habitat, geomorphology, prediction of benthic fish species
distribution, marine protected area design, and more

I mostly understand, and I know enough to know it's not for me, and if
it were close I'd go read. But I am wondering if this is doing
vectorization of raster data, or really what it is actually doing. I
have no idea.

Another partially helpful one:

  PDD-QGis Tool

Tool to download and visualize datasets from Plataforma de Datos by
  Itrend.

I figured out from a web search that this is data about risk/resilience
and natural disasters, and centered on Chile. I am still unclear on if
this data is freely accessible, and if it qualifies as Open Data. A
download helper is self-explanatory, but "visualize" raises the question
of what it does beyond qgis native.

Here are two that I did not find helpful at all:

  QSU2

  QSU2 for CFD simulations

  QAnnAGNPS

This plugin integrates the AnnAGNPS model into QGIS

These also make me wonder if they are bridges to proprietary code, or
something that I could try to learn about.

There are some that aren't in English, which is fine. But some of them
(and probably some with en descriptions) don't explain the geograhpic
scope of data, and thus if someone working elsewhere should not pay
attention. I offer one not in English, and one in:

  GSI-AddressSearch

  国土地理院のAPIを利用して、住所を検索した結果の地点を表示します。住所
  検索した結果から選択してポイントを追加することもできます。国土地理院
  API(https://msearch.gsi.go.jp/address-search/AddressSearch)から取得
したデータを加工して利用。This plugin allows the user to search for a
address and get its coordinates using GSI API.

It's pretty clear reading between the lines that this is a geocoder
(address to coordinates) and 95%+ clear that it will only work in Japan.

  R-ABLE plugin

R-ABLE plugin, developed within the EUHubs4Data project, providing
access to the web services on agricultural land.

THere is no information on whether this is for the world or for EU.

Hope this helps more than it's anoying,
Greg

Hi Doug

Are you able to use any non-authenticating ArcGIS servers/WMS/XYZ tiles etc. on
QGIS?

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 3.34 Not Recognize Existing Shapefiles

2024-06-25 Per discussione Gert-Jan van der Weijden via QGIS-User

Hi Lynn,

I notice the phrase "onedrive" in the data source path.

Could it be that the sync-options of your OneDrive don't really sync the
data, but just do a sync on-demand?
(in which case the shapefile-file (.shp, .shx etc) are just a
placeholder for the real files, that are somewhere up in the OneDrive-cloud.

In Windows explorer, you can tell this by an icon behind the filename:
- blue cloud icon: not locally available, just in the cloud
- green checkmark: available on your device ('offline")

Kind regards,

Gert-Jan

Will,

I presume Oracle must have changed their WKTEXT definition.  The issue
here was the naming "Albers_Conical_Equal_Area" that must be a Oraclism
and a not-yet supported alias for this projection name. I've queued
support for it in PROJ (https://github.com/OSGeo/PROJ/pull/4181), for
the next PROJ release

sorry if I wasn´t clear enough. The problem occurred already with QGIS 3.34.6.

But now I am completely puzzled, because without any action by me it seems to
have disappeared, and all the QGIS files, no matter if on local or network
drive, open from windows explorer as well as from within QGIS

sorry to have bothered you, but in fact for the first time in about two months,
after dozens of attempts, I wasn´t able to reproduce it on the same computer I
used all the time

cheers,

Simon

I'm not sure I understood correctly.
Did the issue always occur using QGIS 3.34.6 or didn't it occur using QGIS
3.34.6 until some weeks ago and then started to occur still using QGIS 3.34.6
without any QGIS update?

It would be interesting to understand if the starting of the occurrence of the
issue was triggered by a QGIS update or not.

The similar issue described in the previous thread in this mailing list and in
the report already referenced was triggered by an update in the libzip library
used by QGIS and installed by the OSGeo4W installers: the issue started to
occur when libzip was updated from version 1.7.3 (in
3.34.5-1 installer and previous ones) to version 1.10.1 (in 3.34.6-1 e
3.34.7-1 installers).
Such issue was allegedly fixed in 3.34.7-2 installer just downgrading libzip
to version 1.7.3.

Hi Andrea,

I updated QGIS in the meantime from 3.34.6 to 3.34.7-2, the problem occurred in
both versions.

And yes, there was at least one, probably two, Windows updates during the time
I had this problem.

I used the Windows standalone .msi installer, and after the installation was
complete I removed 3.34.6.

I tried if the problem persists when I use a bare bone minimal profile, with no
effect on the issue.

So maybe its possible that the problem is caused by some change in the windows
.zip-handling?

Honestly, I have no idea where to investigate

Thanks for your help,

SImon

To further clarify:
I transferred both .qgz files from a USB disk to the user's Documents
directory.

One opened, the other gav the "Unable to unzip file..." error.
So not a network or shared volume issue.

I did not know enough about Windows to try unzipping the .qgz file :-(

Back on the Mac system, both .gqz files on the USB disk opened normally.

So, it seems to me that the possibilities are:
 1) copying error in transferring from USB disk to User's home volume -
unlikely

 2) .ZIP format issue between Mac OSX and Windows

I'll report further after I can test .qgs format on the Windows system.

Hi Richard,

tanks for your advice.

it´s possible to open the same .qgz normally when it is copied to local drive,
and its also no problem to open the .qgz (renamed to .zip) ON the network drive
and to open the .qgs inside.

I´m sure that this is not an issue about synchronous writing access, because it
happens very often with projects that are only used by me.

Seems to be a little mysterious ...

I think it is important to know if it is an issue with the actual file (maybe
corrupt etc, or maybe locked or so), or the combi of the file + on a network
drive.

If you copy that same qgz file to your local disk, is QGIS then able to open it
normally?
(if so: then it is network and possibly QGIS related)

Can you try 'unzip/unpack' the file with another 'unzip' program, when it is ON
the network drive?
(if so it is QGIS/network related)

Note that a qgz file is a 'normal' zip. Just rename it to .zip to look into it.
You will find the old .qgs file. Which actually is an xml file which you can
see in an editor.

One of the issues with 'network drives' could be that several people on the
same time are writing to it? Not sure if it can get corrupt in this way
that is why I propose to look into it, IF you can open it as a zip.

1) Use 'zip -t' on the mac and again (however you spell that) on windows.

2) use some sort of cryptographic checksum (sha1, or md5 is good enough)
on the file on both systems. It is possible that the file is getting
munged in transfer, especially if a windows system or SMB is involved ;-)

Just ran into same problem.
I created 2 separate .qgz projects using QGIS 3.34.7 under Mac OSX 10.13.6

I transferred the qgz files to a Windows installation of QGIS 3.34.7 and
only one would open.

The other resulted in the "Unable to unzip file..." error message.

Today I will go back to the site to see the same project saved as .qgs
will open.

My guess is some incompatibility in ZIP handling...

Re: [Qgis-user] problem when opening projects in open instance

2024-06-20 Per discussione Richard Duivenvoorde via QGIS-User

I think it is important to know if it is an issue with the actual file (maybe
corrupt etc, or maybe locked or so), or the combi of the file + on a network
drive.

If you copy that same qgz file to your local disk, is QGIS then able to open it
normally?
(if so: then it is network and possibly QGIS related)

Can you try 'unzip/unpack' the file with another 'unzip' program, when it is ON
the network drive?
(if so it is QGIS/network related)

Note that a qgz file is a 'normal' zip. Just rename it to .zip to look into it.

Re: [Qgis-user] Raster Tools

Hello Michael,

I think the problem here are the 2 map units per pixel, because in your CRS
this means 2 degrees, so one pixel is about 200 km wide. You can try 0,001 for
about 1 m.

Hope that helps, cheers

Simon

[Qgis-user] problem when opening projects in open instance

2024-06-20 Per discussione Simon Dietmann via QGIS-User
Dear list,

since several weeks I can´t open existing .qgz files from inside an open QGIS
instance when they are located on a network drive. The error message that
appears is "Unable to unzip file: ..."
There´s no problem when the .qgz is on a local drive or when I open it from the
windows explorer.

I´m using latest QGIS Desktop 3.34.7 on Windows 11.

Does anyone know about this problem? Any idea for a solution of this issue will
be appreciated. In case you think it is a bug, I will post a report.

Thank you,

Re: [Qgis-user] Rendering shared exterior boundaries of adjacent polygon features

2024-06-20 Per discussione Simon Dietmann via QGIS-User
Hi Tim,

If I understood correctly what you want to do, I would suggest the following:

  1. duplicate the layer
  2. in the underlying layer, define rendering for area and the interior
borders.
  3. in the layer above, choose “merged features” and define the outer border
lines as e.g. “Outline: Simple line”

Is that what you intended to achieve?

Cheers,

Simon

Hi Tim,

Are you looking for the "Draw line only inside polygon" feature described at
http://nyalldawson.net/2014/01/qgis-two-neat-features-in-2-2/<http://atpscan.global.hornetsecurity.com/index.php?atp_str=RwVoBasBzp0qG5PBaIBa2ZTp_oSn-EMp-R-KBSZcJeFut-K8eHcQlLww1G4VFYTG5Y8mNsDd0gN4-95P7BLIv3b5m67DTIfIdDD2HA45DWEte8xJQw-ZRgIJ1vfiZ8S-_ktwIJTqccyQ_PqRF38YGw1uJD8ekB3xx65JNYviX1K8EYrlaYctljFUE1FNNekjuLnGgTtsK4eV9DUbGAh1w-qNdtlk2VWuX1sUG2xH8vJKcLKTOS5AlZWSR8fmNkKEV3q8Y9U__hO29kQsxLKABCP4nncACE8VKEIi901boiKmnbIhZ95apvOc2sft6CSpPbWjaDqK7auE7hhM1FDo2S3K9NJYNVS1xpUKbAiRbSXZt9OnIhwjOjojWsHtCQvz0TdwFxajIzo6I8ZgPo7yfZRyh_x2T1EFGZs>
 ?

In that case you would probably have two symbol levels:

- one for the line pattern fill (cross-hatched)

- a second one on top of the other one drawing an "Outline:simple line" on top
of it using the "Draw line only inside polygon" checkbox.

This is only briefly described at
https://docs.qgis.org/3.34/en/docs/user_manual/style_library/symbol_selector.html<https://atpscan.global.hornetsecurity.com/index.php?atp_str=y8OZvBGC5j6UVi3oVx8yVy3oQSO6v3Ln4xP7dL-3svwElbERB7-uCaAgUlrQk1OHiqjUFgMhvKryBIAlqrdnY1MIZClMAVCOv25egEPaWJtmlmKmhP3OM-S0ty98b5oJrGKyZmxC7zksiLwAR12vrry9a5T_nlV02DwmW5WLzBouOXxQa0b07bM0ccSl28hlbLVMJ7CjLQ3-jgyXpkPStj5IqVLzU-03Ny2WFg-3GcxoHG-ZsdG7IyzzEdvr4j5wp9H7GA1i363fqaF-7Zo0EPiSmN7Kal4u96Bdkh1rsK_xwcNdQy04gRvJnd7W4vFAeit06XlmrDC1zjcSXyaPLkLOYgmvLRL_J-esKXQfMH7eOvlQP1pj6GdOScxChNKOWToa4nwgSnRqbCM6OiMPJDG5Mfgn_xMkuf8jOjojcX14cXUvvrOAX8NDUQeYzg>

Quote:

Outline: simple line: uses a simple line symbol layer to represent the polygon
boundary (Rings) which can be the interior rings only, the exterior ring only
or all the rings). The Draw line only inside polygon option displays the
polygon borders inside the polygon and can be useful to clearly represent
adjacent polygon boundaries. The other settings for the outline simple line are
the same as for simple line symbols.

But perhaps I am totally misunderstanding your request ...

Greetings,

Andreas

Fellow QGIS Users –

I’m trying to determine if its possible to have QGIS render the exterior
boundary of polygon features only once when that boundary is shared with an
adjacent feature (don’t render overlapping exterior boundaries for both polygon
features). The data I’m working with is a county parcels layer and the
symbology I’m using for this layer is a cross hatched line fill with a separate
component for the outline of the polygons. I’ve tried a couple of expressions
(examples below) including one geometry generator and one data defined override
for the stroke width of the boundary line but none of them achieves my
objective. I’m using QGIS 3.34.7 and my coding skills are limited. I feel
like I’ve seen this issue covered somewhere but have been unable to find a
solution after extensive online exploration.

Method #1: “boundary( difference( $geometry, aggregate( 'union', 'intersects',
$geometry, other_layer := @layer)))” This expression was used on the outline
component of the symbology described above.

Method #2: “CASE WHEN intersects( $geometry, geom_to_wkt( boundary( $geometry
))) THEN 0 ELSE 1 END” Here I switched to using an expression on the stroke
width of a simple fill, but I got an error message saying “Cannot convert to
geometry”.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Tim

Hi,
Also for clarification:
Being a County layer, I would not expect overlapping polygons.
My take is that Tim means "concurrent exterior boundaries" and not
"overlapping exterior boundaries"

*Tim: *What is the reason for wanting only one of the concurrent(?)
boundaries rendered?

Maybe there are other ways to do what you want to.

Re: [Qgis-user] Rendering shared exterior boundaries of adjacent polygon features

2024-06-19 Per discussione Andreas Neumann via QGIS-User

Hi Tim,

Are you looking for the "Draw line only inside polygon" feature
described at
http://nyalldawson.net/2014/01/qgis-two-neat-features-in-2-2/ ?

In that case you would probably have two symbol levels:

- one for the line pattern fill (cross-hatched)

- a second one on top of the other one drawing an "Outline:simple line"
on top of it using the "Draw line only inside polygon" checkbox.

This is only briefly described at
https://docs.qgis.org/3.34/en/docs/user_manual/style_library/symbol_selector.html

Quote:

_Outline: simple line: uses a simple line symbol layer to represent the
polygon boundary (Rings) which can be the interior rings only, the
exterior ring only or all the rings). The Draw line only inside polygon
option displays the polygon borders inside the polygon and can be useful
to clearly represent adjacent polygon boundaries. The other settings for
the outline simple line are the same as for simple line symbols._

But perhaps I am totally misunderstanding your request ...

Greetings,

Andreas

A geopackafge is a sqlite container so you got your database right there.

This sounds like a problem I had with a Netcdf I got from NASA. I tried to
load it and my RAM usage shit up to 90%, shutting down was the only way to
solve. Never figured why that particular file did that. Sure, it was a
500mb file, but I can open a tif of that size without that type of memory
use.

Hi Aron,
Seems like you're dealing with large dataset?
A few things you can try.

  * Make sure the datasets your running analysis on, or carrying out spatial
joins on, all datasets have a Spatial Index. This can be done by going into the
Layer Properties and under Source, click Create Spatial Index.
  * The other thing to consider is looking at how you can simplify your
Tables, do you need all the attribution for analysis...etc
  * One other thing to consider is moving the data from shapefile to a
Spatial Database, something like PostGIS. I'm not sure, but you may even find
moving to a GeoPackage may give you some performance boost.
Just some thoughts.
Kind Regards,

Richard

Hi QGIS Team,

Happy Monday!

We need your help with this app issue. My user is trying to generate vector
tiles of a polygon shapefile of census tracts for California. When she has
successfully run this command before, it took a consecutive 36 hours with no
other applications running for the process to complete. Most of the times she
has tried to run this, QGIS crashes, and sometimes her computer completely
crashes.

Many other commands take a very long time. She tried to do a spatial join
yesterday of about 400 points with the census tract shapefile, which took 2-3
hours.

When I connected to the computer, there was an error message related to memory.
She has 16GB of memory, and when she runs the command, it uses around 95 to 98
percent of the memory resources.

Subject: [Qgis-user] T20240617.0042 - CRC | Jamie Buell | PC Keeps Crashing /
Very Slow when using QGIS

[cid:image002.jpg@01DAC1A2.8A8B2B10]

Please let me know if you need more information on this issue.

Regards,

-Aaron

[Qgis-user] QGIS User Conference 2024: Detailed schedule

2024-06-17 Per discussione Martin Dobias via QGIS-User
Hi all

Good news everyone - the detailed schedule is now available on the
conference website:
https://uc2024.qgis.sk/schedule/details/

We are expecting 50 talks and 15 workshops over the two days. For those
looking for a small escape from the conference buzz, there will be a large
"focus" / "quiet" room at the library right next to the conference rooms.
And after the first day of the conference, there will be a social event
with food and drinks.

A quick reminder: early bird tickets are available only until the end of
June - only two weeks left!

Those who plan to join the contributor meeting, please do not forget to add
your name to the list of participants on the wiki:
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/wiki/27th%E2%80%90Contributor%E2%80%90Meeting%E2%80%90in%E2%80%90Bratislava

See you in Bratislava!

Regards
Martin (on behalf of the local organizing committee)

I'd just make a SVG version of this as a static image, and insert it
as a picture element in the layout.

Re: [Qgis-user] Query Builder - I thought I understood what I was doing.

2024-06-12 Per discussione oisin.kelly.wild--- via QGIS-User
Are you entering the filter in the expression builder from the attribute table.
If so, type

substring("DateSale") in ('2021',  '2022', '2023', '2024')

This should filter the table to show features with "DateSale"='2021' or '2022'
or '2023' or '2024'.

Anyway, in case it's a date, you can use the year function in the query
builder e.g. year(DateSale)

Sorry, slice doesn't work on expressions. Use

substring("DateSale", 7, 10)

this explanation is opaque. can you explain how i use this in the query
builder? is it a matter of adding an attribute that is calculated by the
slicing?

"DateSale"[7:10] to return

[Qgis-user] Query Builder - I thought I understood what I was doing.

2024-06-12 Per discussione Jeremy Swarm via QGIS-User
I have a set of vectors (it's a parcel map) from my county. This layer has a
number of attributes defined. I would like to filter the features by an
attribute called "DateSale". it is formatted MM/DD/. I believe it is
astring. I would like to find features which end with any of 2021,2022,2023,
,or 2024. I have not been able to build a successful filter with the query

Yes, each feature has an attribute with a specific file path from a
folder where there are multiple image files. I think that the Print Layout
is controlld by the report and every shown feature has its own image in the
attribute table.
