Re: [ql-users] ComputerActive

Your comments have been passed to the Quanta Secretary for his attention.

Is there anyone out there who would be interested in monitoring the ql-user
list and writing a short summary of discussion points for the Newsletter -
only one article required per issue (bimonthly). This would bring such
topics to the attention of ALL Quanta members.

Thanks.

ComputerActtive have a 'Memory Lane' article in their last issue (158
 dated 17 March).

They say 'While old machines can still be used for basic purposes most
 people collect them for fun'

All they say about the QL is
Sinclair followed this spectrum in 1984 with the sophisticated but
 poorly-received QL
 That is it.

It would be a good idea if Quanta followed this up with a (short)
resumee/ and contact details for their letters page.
There cannot be one old system that has had more interesting expansions
 and developments.

Do not forget that it has an Ethernet port on it, flash rom plus
 more
bells and whistles than your average coffee maker :-)
In terms of software drivers, what would Ethernet require to connect
to other computers on a network? Would one driver be it (i.e. largely
device independen to use QL-speak) or would it need various drivers
depending on what it was hoping to connect to?

What I'm getting at (not being familar with PC networks) is would you
need a driver to access Ethernet in general (or another QL on
ethernet), another driver to access a PC over a network, another
driver to talk to a printer hub, another to talk to a Mac etc etc. I
am still smarting a bit from other QL hardware like Aurora which for
all their promised merits (no blame fired at anyone here) were not
fully usable until the drivers eventually came along (thinking of
Aurora 256 colours which were not fully supported until Marcel took
the law into his own hands).

You can probably see what I'm hinting at, if drivers are an issue, and
we were asking Quanta to assist with development costs, need this only
apply to the hardware or do we need to think of the software costs
 too.

Would anyone like to do a financial study of these or other suggestions and
possibly give Quanta the opportunity of helping once again. A formal

QUANTA backed a software or hardware project for members only?

For example, QUANTA backed the Q60. This, I understand, was in the form of
a
loan that was repaid. How would people have reacted if QUANTA had made it
available to QUANTA members only? A Q60 costs £545. Would it have been too
much to ask for an extra £14 or £17 for QUANTA membership on top?
I think that a similar offer should be made to Nasta so he can get on

did not have the money. I am sure that he would welcome some direct

Geoff's comments make a lot of sense. I would say, though, that the
reason that shows have concentrated in the SE area is because we are
willing to make the effort to put them on.

And, I think, you have a little more manpower in the area compared with
areas north of Watford

 Quanta has little say in
where the shows are unless it is to say they will not fund them. I have
deliberately not organised a Hove show so far this year because of the
London Show in January and uncertainty about the timing or otherwise of
the QL 2004 show. Now I know that there will not be one until 2005

I'm not sure that this has been specifically stated yet (Geoff W comment
please)

I will probably try to arrange one for Mid May because a lot of people
have asked. As this is one of the cheaper ones (150 pounds for the hall)
I hope it can go ahead. The alternatives to Quanta funding the show are
charging the attendees and that will only serve to decrease the number
 of people who are there.

In order to get Quanta Sponsorship contact the secretary direct with full
details of the event including costs, date etc. DO NOT rely on it being
picked up from this list!

Don't forget that the traders sponsor the shows
too by sending flyers out. People like Jochen and Marcel who travel long
distances to get to the shows rarely even break even but are usually
among the most popular stall to visit.

I am also glad to see steps being taken to remedy the magazine. It has
run the same out of date QL Today ad for the last four issues in spite
of my sending in new ones.

Please rush me another up to date copy so I can pass it on to the correct
channel for you. Sorry for the errors.

I am also glad to see Geoff taking an interest in this. Does this mean
you have reversed your decision to stop trading ? I hope this is the
 case.

Interesting thoughts all round (either all this happened before I joined the

I am aware that the magazine is a major part of the Quanta membership.
But the members should get something which they enjoy reading - and
 not complain and worry about.

I (and my colleagues on the Quanta committee) agree with your sentiments

And, of course, the members would have to agree to any kind of

Unfortunately, the result was ... hmmm, there was no result.

Pity about that!

Will wait for postman Pat to paddle up our (waterlogged) drive with bated

With this issue, it is renewal time, so we will see how the future

[ql-users] General Sort out

2003-12-21 Thread thegilpins

It has suddenly become very quiet on the QL-users list - nothing to read for
four days now. Has everyone logged off for Christmas? Here's a little
something to occupy your minds and time between the season's festivities:

Having purchased Launchpad and QWord as well as updated my SMSQ/E and QPac2,
my system does not run as well as it used to. The basic principles have
remained unchanged since I used two Aurora/SGC/QuBide machines at work and
in order to keep all the database files (.dbf) up to date, these two
machines were networked across the office - slow but very reliable I found.

I have always started off with the obligatory boot file in which I LRESPR
just about every toolkit etc imaginable and set up my ALTKEYs etc. I then
provide the option of installing SMSQ - the Accounts package 'Cash Trader'
would not run under SMSQ - hence the reason for giving the option. At the
end of the boot programme, I EXed a QLiberated SuperBASIC programme called
GENERAL_MENU_obj which includes a clock correction prog and then a menu to
provide one of five options plus a 'Return to SuperBASIC' from which I could
do all the things a basic machine could do, or something specific like
'Family Trees' - Genealogy - or 'Scouting'. Having retired 4 years ago, I
have now decided to get rid of all the 'Company System' stuff and substitute
all the Quanta stuff I have either inherited or have written during the last
couple of years - at present QUANTA runs from floppies only. Over the last
few years - gosh, how time flies once one has retired! - I have made various
half hearted attempts to get all my QL stuff installed on the PC running
QPC2 - now have 3V11 installed - only to find that any reference to
networking (nfs_use etc) causes an error. So, the whole thing needs sorting
out.

Where do I start? (From the beginning! - boot)?

How do I know which toolkits and extensions are required for which
programmes and which programmes load their own extensions? (Could this cause
duplicate entries if the same toolkit is loaded twice, or use up unnecessary
memory?) Is there any way of uninstalling an extension once loaded?

Since SMSQ causes a complete reset when loaded, should I be loading toolkits
after SMSQ or before (in case I want to use QDOS) or both ('cos if it's all
lost when SMSQ loads it would only be loaded once anyway)?

Has anyone got any pearls of wisdom to offer?

Have a GREAT Christmas everyone and happy QLing in 2004

John Gilpin.

 Dear Quanta and QL Traders
I have just run the first Norwich Spectrum and SAM Show (ORSAM 2003.
Originally it was planned to include a Quanta Workshop, but I was talked
out of it. At the show, as part of a 'QL2000 Way Forward' style
discussion,
it was decided that QL should be included come next time. It was suggested
that if QLers only want to do it themselves then maybe the two shows
could run in parallel i.e.two shows in the same hall or a spectrum
village inside a QL show. One visitor said he would bring a Thor next
time whatever I said, while another said the last QL show he had been
to was a flop and the end of the road. Some questioned why QL would
not mix with other Sinclair users. Traders at ORSAM sell things that
maybe of interest to QL users, while QL Traders will benefit from the
bigger market. Costs of the show (a 3 figure sum) would be halved,
there is no danger of the QL being overwhelmed by other platforms, more
the reverse if anything. One thing of note is that there was not a
single Windows or Mac computer at ORSAM 2003. Surely its better to
have one successful show than two that fail and have to be stopped.
I need to have feed back from you as to what your thoughts are now
about sharing a show with other Sinclair users. Is it reasonable for
me to suggest a joint show on Saturday November 6th, 2004?

 Hi all
I am just about to build a MinisQ60 and wondered if anybody (off list)
could give me Keith Mitchell email address so that could get a few
general points about building it (power supply etc). I am thinking of
buying the GS81C from Maplin, it looks like Epsons PSU but is 50W and
also has 12v. Does -12v = ground ? Thanks in advance.

You might not be aware that publishing literal email addresses like this
in _any_ group, even an email based one like this, is favourite spam
harvesting material. I am sure that this area is archived all over the
 place on the web.

If you _have_ to send email addresses then it is a good idea to disguise
them in some way - like I have done.

So we are all going to converge on Eindhoven from all over the world in

I don't want to be a killjoy, but there is a very slight, relatively
 unimportant, complication.

Who is going to organise it?

I understand that Roy Brereton is already doing a feasibility exercise
involving the two venues proposed and I think he is prepared to put every
effort into the overall organising (Rather like he did in 2000). Thanks Roy.

It would be nice for him to have a list of people who would be prepared to
help him if needed and I would like to put my name - together with other
Nemqlug members - at the top of that list. Nemqlug meets on Thursday night
this week and I am sure that we could add to the proposed venues with a
little thought.

Any one else willing to join in?

[ql-users] Quanta workshop support

2003-07-24 Thread thegilpins

I have noticed the comments regarding a QUANTA 2000 type event but all the
contributions are coming from the expected sources. (Thanks Dilwyn J, Darren
B, Geoff W and John T). What about the rest of you? come on. Put your ten
penn'orth in. (Should that be Dimesworth in USA or Centsworth in
Europe?) Let's here from you ALL.

We even have venues other than Scout Huts in Manchester and also such a lot
to see in the surrounding areas (for those not QL minded). We have Motorways
(Full of congestion), International Airports (BA Check-in staff
permitting!), Ports with easy access on both sides of the country and The
City of Culture 2008 is only 35 miles away.

There. - QUANTA have thrown down the gauntlet so what's the challenge?

Let's start a list of celebrities to invite.

Let's bring everyone up to date on the latest and best in the QL world (or
QL Today - to keep certain members happy!)

Keep the comments coming - yes we realise that this needs attention NOW.

Still no update on Roy's most practical offer (I don't even know which Roy
we are talking about)

Add your thoughts about what is to happen to the QL and Quanta in the
future. What is the way forward?

Who is out there with something interesting and/or informative to say in the
form of a tutorial or lecture and what do we want to learn about?

Are the sub-groups interested in participating? If not what's holding you
back? Cost, apathy, or other reasons?

Geoff Wicks recently said:

What still is not answered is how far QUANTA would
support, financially and otherwise, a QL2000 type show.

I am in touch with Roy and Robin on this point and hope to report back soon.
JG.

As I understand it, and if I am wrong I am sure one of the old QUANTA
committee will correct me, QL2000 was organised directly by QUANTA with
only a minimal contribution from the local group. (If, indeed, there was
still a local group in existence.)

Realistically I don't think we can reasonably expect QUANTA to do the same
again from both a financial and organisational aspect. It would probably
have to be a joint effort by a local group and QUANTA, and in this respect
Roy's offer seems to be the most practical so far.

If we are really serious about another QL2000, it has to be more just a
hall, tea and coffee. A two day event with a fancy name, but which
otherwise
remains much the same as any other show is New Labour, not QL2000.

 Geoff

Having only just joined the ql-users list (Shame! I hear you all shout), I
have missed Roy's offer to contribute to a QL2000 show. Can someone copy me
the details? Although I attended QL2000 in Portsmouth, I was not involved in
any way with its organisation. What do members want from such a show? I am
sure that something unusual can be put together. Fill me in with the details
guys. Perhaps we could plan something along with our current planning for
the AGM in Manchester in April 2004. Nemqlug (North East Manchester QL User
Group) meet in about a week's time and this is on our agenda. Give us
something to get our teeth into.

Having been forwarded a couple of your emails (thanks Alex) I thought it
was
time that at least one member of the committee was to field the items
relevant to the committee so I have subscribed. I am not sure that I will
be
contributing a great deal on many topics - Friendly Fire etc but here's
my
 first comment:

The Quanta committee is still prepared to offer financial support to those
sub groups wishing to run workshops etc. which are open to all Quanta
members. Requests for such support should be sent to Roy Brereton (Quanta
Secretary) with full details of the event and a breakdown of anticipated
costs. Any support offered has been, in the past, to pay for the venue and
the bill from the venue owners should be addressed to Quanta Treasurer at
the address inside the front cover of Quanta Newsletter.(Or a photocopy of
the receipted bill if it has already been paid).

Good luck, Tarquin,(and any one else who is prepared to put on such
events)
for your anticipated workshop in East Anglia. If help from the committee
is
required, just ask. I am sure that someone will attend to represent
Quanta.

 Regards to all,

 John Gilpin.
 Quanta Treasurer.
