Re: [ql-users] Epson 800 wanted
This sounds as if it was an older mac. It probably has a slightly different connector also (round). Any replacement printer will need to have drivers for it. There are some serial to USB converters I believe on the market, but then most of the newer printers that have USB may not have drivers for the version of the OS that this customer's mac has. Perhaps it may be time to update more than just the printer (either to a new mac and/or a new QL type would do - good thing I don't have a vested interest in either one :) ). jim On Thursday, February 6, 2003, at 02:23 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In a message dated 06/02/03 22:07:37 GMT Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Epson 800 has parallel, serial and mac port, works just fine with Miracles ser/par converter for Ql Hmm customer has a mac and a broken Epson 800 - is looking to replace the printer, but Mac only has a serial port... -- Rich Mellor RWAP Software 35 Chantry Croft, Kinsley, Pontefract, West Yorkshire, WF9 5JH TEL: 01977 610509 http://hometown.aol.co.uk/rwapsoftware

The Epson Stylus 800 was indeed a Parallel printer - I had one. I think, but I'm not sure, that there was a serial interface available for it. But classical serial speed is really slow for the amount of colour printing data of today (especially with the top 2880x2880 or 5760x1440/720 dpi). Laser printer with postscript are easier to feed (especially when they have their own founts), alas they are so expensive and the colour is rare for laser.

No need to go back that far. I can still make them. I miniatured Miracle's original good design (based on 555 timers) and put all the circuitry inside a Centronics plug housing. There are two designs - one for Z88 and one for QL. But classical serial speed is really slow for the amount of colour printing data of today (especially with the top 2880x2880 or 5760x1440/720 dpi). Laser printer with postscript are easier to feed (especially when they have their own founts), alas they are so expensive and the colour is rare for laser. and it relies on a fully working QL serial port at 9600. The port can seem to work OK, but often handshaking is dodgy. This will show up instantly when printing through the converter - it relies totally on the handshaking working. I even toyed with the idea of upping the spec to 19200, but have never got around to it. -- QBBS (QL fido BBS 2:252/67) +44(0)1442-828255 tony@surname.co.uk http://www.firshman.co.uk Voice: +44(0)1442-828254 Fax: +44(0)1442-828255 TF Services, 29 Longfield Road, TRING, Herts, HP23 4DG

Yes - it should work with any computer provided there is a +5VDC or more available on the port. ie it won't work on a PC - not that it is necessary there (8-)# -- QBBS (QL fido BBS 2:252/67) +44(0)1442-828255 tony@surname.co.uk http://www.firshman.co.uk Voice: +44(0)1442-828254 Fax: +44(0)1442-828255 TF Services, 29 Longfield Road, TRING, Herts, HP23 4DG

I have an Epson Stylus Color 850, about three years old, that has both a serial (RS232) and parallel (IEEE 1284, EPP) interface. Great printer! Speaks ESC/P2. Im not about to sell mine, but I can recommend it (if you can get one). Like most things, its not perfect. You cant turn it off at the mains and it spends a long time grooming itself and burping and farting in the mornings. Generic ink cartridges come cheap though. You can forgive a lot for that. Per

Needs } to be a serial printer - I only have dot matrix ones here Are you sure the Epson is not a parallel printer ? I have not meet a new serial printer since the middle of the eighty, and it was all dot matrix then... The current mood is USB (1.1) for printer. With some luck, some of them still have a parallel interface, but most cheap ones don't! (There is a canon ...550 something, which is reasonable and still has a parallel port, (but things are getting worse and worse, because there is a lack of available documentation for programming the new printers, when the printer is not a 'window'-only printer [aka no processor in the printer, high speed link required for the computer to print correctly!]), even if the main cost with colour printer (inkjet) are the refill, not the printer (and with the new 'intelligent' ink tank, you can forget the syringe for the really cheap printers!)
