Re: [qmailtoaster] dspam cleaning error?

2024-08-12 Thread Eric Broch
It is enabled once during install of dspam for dependencies
perl-Mail-Mbox*. It should not be enabled all the time. This was
necessary when I built dspam for el8/9. If Rocky now has these
dependencies we could get rid of Fedora...which would be nice.

Thank you, Eric. That solved the issue with the installation of dspam.

'--nobest' to use not only best candidate packages)

The rest of the script continues and creates the database, but
nothing practical gets installed:

[root@catchmail2 installs]# which dspam
/usr/bin/which: no dspam in
(/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/root/bin)

[root@catchmail2 installs]# find /usr -name dspam
/usr/share/selinux/targeted/default/active/modules/100/dspam
[root@catchmail2 installs]#

In the (distant) past I got myself into deep trouble having some
Perl modules installed via the OS and others from CPAN, more often
than not the two separate install types wouldn't see/interact with
one another, even when things end up somewhere below /usr/local.

Before I tried again with the suggested --skip-broken or --nobest
options added into the script, I wanted to write to make Eric aware
that there's missing dependencies on a clean CentOS 8 install.

I'll snapshot the machine and try again with --nobest. My suspicion
is GD::Graph::lines3d would be unnecessary for a functional tool,
but Mail::MboxParser is most likely a must have and no clear path to
get it.

If anyone has suggestions to those packages, I'd love to hear your
suggestions.

Just my 2 cents. Overall, it’s pretty similar to what Eric has.

I have a COS7 and used the install scripts but I remember when I use

So I guess I'm not using dspam at all, right?

Re: [qmailtoaster] dspam -- yay or nay?

2020-08-30 Thread Eric Broch
This is the contents of the .qmail-default (domain level) file that's
existed since the beginning and never changed (directory:
/home/vpopmail/domains/mydomain) :

| /usr/bin/dspam --user "$EXT@$HOST" --deliver=stdout |
/home/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail '' bounce-no-mailbox

The .qmail file if one decides to run dspam by user (not domain) is as follows
(/home/vpopmail/domains/mydomain/myuser) :

| preline /usr/bin/maildrop ./.mailfilter.dspam

.mailfilter.dspamhere
.

The lines provided in the previous email do not call dspam at all (below):

it creates the .qmail as a result

|/var/qmail/bin/preline /usr/bin/maildrop -A 'Content-Filter: maildrop-toaster'
/etc/mail/mailfilter

if you then edit the account via the admin panel that file becomes:

|/var/qmail/bin/preline /usr/bin/maildrop -A 'Content-Filter: maildrop-toaster'
/etc/mail/mailfilter
/home/vpopmail/domains/brayworth.com/[user]/Maildir/

Dub mail if you have more than one filter. So if you do default and user .qmail
you will do get 2 copies. I have used it since it came out started on centos 5

Hmmm...

I never had double delivery and mine's been installed for 5 years or more.

The install script installs only one dot qmail file (.qmail-default),

You have the option to run dspam at domain or user level.

And how many spam engines running spamdyke, spamassassin and dspam all

Is anyway to manage dspam through browser after install qmt along with

message in the 1-learned folder is ham move it to the 1-notspam folder
for training.

the . (dot) scripts (.qmail and .mailfilter) are for running mail
through dspam and automatically moving mail to the spam folder. You'll
need to install maildrop if it isn't already installed.

Included in the .mailfilter scripts is my out-of-office (vacation) tool.
If you send yourself a message with subject 'out of office' with any
combination of upper and lower case letters it will trigger autorespond.
What you type in the message body will be the vacation message. To
deactivate autorespond simply send yourself another message with 'out of
office'.

That's a shame as I am using DSPAM presently with great results. I was
using it at the domain level with a call in the .qmail-default file
using this format: '| /usr/local/bin/dspamc --user "$EXT@$HOST"
--deliver=stdout | /home/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail '' bounce-no-mailbox'
, however, I discovered that some attachments, and very few at that,
were being stripped only when the call to DSPAM was present. I am
currently testing on my own server DSPAM's use in each user's
.mailfilter file using this call: 'xfilter "/usr/local/bin/dspamc --user
$EXT@$HOST --deliver=stdout".' Hopefully the later will solve the
'stripped attachment' problem.

Anyway I'd be interested in calling DSPAM from Dovecot LDA using
Dovecot's configuration files but have yet to find a way.

Re: [qmailtoaster] dspam

2014-03-23 Thread Eric Broch
As with all things new, there is a learning curve and in my case some
frustrations and fears that it may not work as expected. Once this is
overcome (IMHO) it's well worth it and maintenance, if any, is a snap.
As I stated before, once DSPAM is trained on a user, no more training is
really necessary (in my experience). After initial deployment and
training, it's been pretty much hands-free. On my own system I trained
roughly 30 emails and now I train about 1 every month or two. The one
client (I'm planning another) that I've deployed DSPAM with is very
pleased. We are tagging now 98-99%, or more, of the spam coming in, and
with Maildrop the client never has to see it. I don't even think we need
Spamassassin any more. I might add that if you have Outlook 2012 it
removes email headers when moving email between folders and for this
reason training with DSPAM is problematic but not impossible. Also on
the client's system I found that only a few users were really having
issues with spam so I was able to concentrate more thoroughly on heavily
spammed accounts.

Now, there were a few initial problems like what Angus experienced and
in order to remedy this I deleted the user's DSPAM signature dbase and
started over. Then I trained only on 'error' and skipped all 'corpus'
training, though my Readme covers it. I had to clear signature data at
most once per user.

Angus,

The FTP site should work now. My firewall was blocking it for some reason
(testing fail2ban).

Anyway, for my set ups I did not train on the 'corpus' setting only on
'error.' In order to train on 'error' the message must have a DSPAM header
which I configured to be in the email header NOT them message. On my own
machine I trained (as error) about 30 spam messages marked by DSPAM as
innocent. And, now I get 1 spam a month, if that.
On my client's site which receives about 60,000 emails a month on average I
trained between 100 and 200 messages the same way with similar results.

I read through the users email directory and catenate (cat) each spam marked
as Innocent through the dspam client program as follows:

cat $email | dspamc --user user@domain --mode=teft --class=spam
--source=error

The results have been excellent.

Angus,

The FTP site should work now. My firewall was blocking it for some
reason (testing fail2ban).

Anyway, for my set ups I did not train on the 'corpus' setting only on
'error.' In order to train on 'error' the message must have a DSPAM

Eric, many belated thanks for this detailed write-up.

Using this, plus the John M. Simpson page that you pointed to, I was able to
get dspam installed and running on my server.

I'm now testing it with a single user, and if it works well, then I'll roll it
out to the others. I'll be curious to see how well dspam performs on a lot of
the spam that I see, which is filled with hashbuster text intended precisely to
defeat statistical filters like dspam.

Two minor corrections to the very helpful instructions that you published.

First, I think step 4 should come before step 3 (so that you have access to the
dspam setup scripts when you configure your MySQL).

Second in step 7, it should be 'service dspam start' rather than 'service start
dspam'.

I don't know if it's worth adding this stuff to the wiki yet, because I don't
know how Eric will choose to support dspam in QMT. When it does get added to
the wiki, it would be worth including some of the configuration information
from JMS's page, as that's crucial to getting dspam working properly. (I almost
got stuck with dspam failing to start because it was still running in the
default mode - as an adjunct to a mail server - rather than as a
client/server-style filtering system, and was throwing an error when it tried
to access a port).

Thanks again

Angus

I'm not sure about globally but its not really that hard to setup each
user. My dspam setup requires a custom .qmail file for each user in
order to use the .mailfilter to process the message through dspam and
then into the inbox or spam maildirs.

Each of the .qmail and .mailfilter files are the same for each user
who wants dspam. I am writing a 'publish' script to update my 30+
users with any changes I make to the 2 files but I haven't had any
time to work on it. I installed a new server over the holiday and it
will be a while before I can update the low priority scripts...;)

Maybe the .qmail-default in the domain folder would be a direction you
could check into?

This can be done using SA too, via sa-learn injection. Just create two aliases:

sudo valias -i '|sa-learn --spam --no-sync >> /var/log/sa-learn-spam.log 2>&1'
[EMAIL PROTECTED];
sudo valias -i '|sa-learn --ham --no-sync >> /var/log/sa-learn-ham.log 2>&1'

Then put this into cron to run nightly by user root:

qmail-spam stop && sudo -H -u vpopmail sa-learn --force-expire && qmail-spam

My 2 cents, yes hard for my level, i tried but failed to get all the bells
and whistles installen on a centos4 toaster, i could find no suitable
information for my toaster, plus simscan had me confused, i was doomed to
fail.
Then I decided to make dspam on a gateway in front of my beloved toaster
Loaded Debian and followed these howto's "piece of cake"
I did not follow all the steps in order, but rather gathered important
parts from all 3. After reading all three you will see some good ideas
that you want to incorp.
Started at:
http://www.howtoforge.com/virtual_users_and_domains_with_postfix_debian_etch
stopped at mysql and then followed the below howto making adjustments to
use mysql apache2 certs and up to squirrelmail, I only used what I wanted
on my setup.
http://www200.pair.com/mecham/spam/virtualp1.html
Then I used all of the next 2 howto's
http://www.howtoforge.com/etch_postfix_dspam_clamav
http://www.howtoforge.com/dspam_webui_debian_sid
I did use the etch unstable version mod auth mysq dpkg :(
Best if you build your own new mod here.
I think if you have an extra box and IP the gateway is pretty sweet,
messages that slip by the gate are greeted with the toasters spamassassin
i still see hard rejects once in a while.
Plus user to user mail is still scanned by the toasters clam or should be.

I am very very happy so far.
You have many ways to setup dspam, unpack the dspam tar ball and have a
look see
Good Luck

Yes, you would use dspam instead of spamassassin.

It had been brought up before a long time ago on the list and was

Anyone still using DSpam out there? If so, are you happy with it? I
like the fact that the users can just forward a message to the spam
address and it will learn from it - most of my users call me telling me
the computer is broken and doesn't work when a web page is offline, so
the easier the better.
Feel free to email me off list if you feel that your comments may not be

Its per user but it might be possible to have a global address if dspam
was tweaked. It might support it now but I'm not sure...my dspam
version is over a year old.

Sounds slick.

Is that one qmail-alias per server, domain, or user? (I'm not real clear on
the process yet)

Do I understand correctly that dspam also keeps track of ham/spam on a
per-user basis? In this manner, a piece of mail might be spam to one user
and ham to another (in the same domain)?

Forwarding the message to a spam/ham training address will distort the
message but dspam won't care. When dspam is first run the message is
scanned to create tags that all belong to a unique id. The tags
determine spam or ham and dspam marks it as such along with embedding
the id in the header or body. To train on a false-pos or false-neg
dspam only really needs the id and the right command line switch. So,
it doesn't matter if you forward it as long as that id is in there.
Each qmail-alias is set to run dspam with the 'oops, spam' or 'oops,
ham' switch and dspam learns from its mistake.

To make things really slick only 1 qmail-alias is needed. Simply scan
the header for the prior dspam classification and pipe it back to dspam
with the correct switch...;)

I was wondering about dspam w/ pop3. This answers a lot of questions.

I'm disappointed to see that Netscape doesn't have a redirect option.
However, there *is* a mailredirect extension for Mozilla Thunderbird (0.7
and above) and Mozilla Mail. I don't know if this would work with Netscape
or not.

In addition, I see on the dspam list that some people have used both
spamassassin *and* dspam. That being the case, I think we should be looking
to provide dspam in addition to SA on the toaster. It'd be sweet if people
could choose either/and with a simple configuration. Keyword: simple.
Neither one is looking very simple to me at this point. :( Doesn't mean it
can't be done though.

POP3 would work fine except for the training portion of dspam. Even
though my setup uses IMAP people can still download the contents of
their inbox which would be clean. Training could be done by forwarding
ham and spam to email aliases which would be pretty basic using
.qmail-alias files.

I imagine it would. To train spamassassin this way, you need to
"bounce" or redirect the message to a spam account for it to learn from.
Sorry, I just jumped in the middle of this. Here is some more info:
Many thanks to all the contributors, listed in

Eudora
Select the message, go

"Message" menu, choose redirect, fill in the address, and choose
send. (Brian Corcoran and Erik Wheeler)

With the email message

POP3 would work fine except for the training portion of dspam. Even
though my setup uses IMAP people can still download the contents of
their inbox which would be clean. Training could be done by forwarding
ham and spam to email aliases which would be pretty basic using
.qmail-alias files.

I'm disappointed to see that Netscape doesn't have a redirect option.
However, there *is* a mailredirect extension for Mozilla Thunderbird (0.7

That was from a while ago; they may have a fix for Netscape now. Figured
that would help a little.

Hey Lee,

With your setup, does it allow pop3 clients to download less spam? Just
wondering as this would be an easier approach considering you could filter
mail marked as spam into a mail folder and train Dspam that way.

If so care to share?

I ignored the admin cgi scripts since I only used IMAP folders for

I setup Vexira before ClamAV got added to the toaster.

Vexira is a smtp proxy in front of qmail so there is no reason to use
qmail's blacklist control file. Vexira dumps spam just fine using the RBL.

I suppose that answers anyother question, which AV? I'm think that we'll
want to change as little as possible of the toaster configuration. Why
Vexira instead of ClamAV (which is plugged into simscan)?

Also, is there some reason you've plugged RBL into Vexira instead of using

would save you some bandwidth and processing.

RE: [qmailtoaster] Dspam on the toaster

2006-10-28 Thread Rangi Biddle
Hi Guys,

Thanks for the feedback on what I've posted thus far. I totally agree about
user participation when training Dspam and have explained that to my
customer who is using the toaster for their customers (~415 domains). But
alas, they themselves are ignorant to the subject of spam. As someone else
mentioned from my message about catchalls, they are entirely correct and I
to agree that catchalls are an open invitation to spammers to spam you if
you have a catchall.

Considering the amount of active participation there is with DSpam I'd be
happy to put my name forward as one of the testers or perhaps assist in
integrating DSpam with simscan.

Perhaps a point to start would be to take the simscan 1.1 patch and examine
it. Either that or wait for the guys at Inter7 to do something with it.

-- Side Bar: If any of you have already experienced what it is like using
DSpam and its effectiveness you'd want to have it running now! I'm serious
when I make that statement if you've ever gotten sick of clearing out your
Inbox that is full of spam.

Changing the subject ever so slightly, those configure options that Eric
posted are for DSpam and as I've already pointed out on that issue; it
wasn't to do with DSpam, but more to do with the user/group that executes
the administration CGI scripts (if you intend to run the CGI scripts). This
was wholly an apache suexec issue more than a DSpam one.

I look forward to any comments/feedback.

Yep, a user must involve in this. At least with DSpam.

For DSpam to work as expected MUST be configured user-by-user

Your example of TigerDirect is perfect.

Thinking a little about it, should we uninstall a properly configured,
whole-system antispam spamassassin?

I think SA (or another whole server spam killer) must be installed, with a
very prudent configuration (the default toaster conf is perfect), to help
avoid unwanted bulk traffic.

Anyway bandwith is a scarce resource.

I'm not sure. I have seen anywhere from just under a second to several

it should be faster but...

2006-10-27 Thread dsanchez

Hi!

Almost everyone in this list tells about using dspam _instead_ SA .

DSpam is GREAT, as allow a user to interact with the antispam system
and train it.

   BUT, people is lazy.

   Very lazy.

Typical users use POP accounts with Outlook and don't know even that
there are IMAP folders on their server.

Maybe they deserve SPAM, but tell your PHB why they get that much spam!

A much better approach about spam is getting a VERY conservative
SpamAssassin configuration, just as we with the default toaster have,
and implement DSpam as per user basis (with maildrop).

If you as user like to control your spam you can use this new option
via IMAP or squirrelmail with folders.

If you are a tipical user that doesn't use IMAP nor Squirrelmail (90%
of people using non free html mail (gmail, hotmail, etc)), you will get
some SPAM.

And everyone happy, the sun shines the birds sing and the beer is cold
:-P ( friday night, nevermind )

Thanks pals.

I believe that DSpam isn't workable without user participation. This is as
much a matter of education as it is anything else. I don't think spam can be
addressed solely by system administrator. PHBs and customers need to
acknowledge that fact (not an opinion). Anything short of that is wishful
thinking. Of course, there will be some who refuse to understand this, and
SA is better suited to them (and I suppose they deserve a less effective
solution).

That's unfortunate. We need to find out what inter7's plans are regarding
simscan with dspam.

I wonder how Lee's implemetation dealt with this. Perhaps the configuration
parameters (--with-dspam-home-owner=vpopmail --with-dspam-home-group=vchkpw
--with-dspam-owner=vpopmail --with-dspam-group=vchkpw) took care of it?

Sounds nice, but I think that the basic toaster needs to be self contained,
with scalability.

Hopefully we can continue to use clamav under simscan, so this won't be an
issue. I don't anticipate that we'll need to go this route, unless simscan
can't be used for some (unknown/unanticipated) reason.

This is a fantastic start for us, Lee. I haven't gotten around to googling
background for this project, but your site is a gold mine!

A few questions:

.) I notice that you started with toaster 1.2.3. What's the latest version
you're running with DSpam?

.) What kind of performance are you seeing with mysql as the database
server? Will this be suitable for a high volume toaster?

.) I see that DSpam is hooked in via maildrop. I presume this means that
messages are never rejected during the smtp session, correct? Are rejection
messages ever sent to the sender? I suppose not, but what is the use,
really? (/I'm thinking to myself)

.) Do you use any RBLs in conjunction with DSpam? If so, which ones?

.) Do you have some automated method of creating the necessary .qmail,
.qmail-default, and .mailfilter files automatically when creating a new
domain/user (via qmailadmin or CLI)? Note, I would think that the
.mailfilter file should maybe be in a /bin somewhere, linked to from each
user (for ease of maintenance).

.) Most importantly, are you volunteering to help us out on this project?
;) You've already done a very large part, but I'm wondering if you'll be
available for at least consultation.

Please help us, oh-Lee-one! :)

Many thanks!

This is typical for PHBs. No worry. I figure it'll be some time before this

make it simple and include some education/sales/training along the way.

Great.

I was hoping we wouldn't need to wait for Kyle's VMs before we get going on
this. Can we use CentOS4.4 and current toaster on a devel box?

I'd also like to see 1 or 2 other volunteers.

Before we jump right in, I'm thinking that we need to figure out how DS is
going to hook into the process.

We'll need to look closely at simscan (I'm already on that email list). It'd
be nice if we could keep simscan, and simply turn SA/DS on/off using
simcontrol file. Just a thought.

Also, I read something in the DS FAQs about easily integrating DSpam w/
clamav. I don't know anything about that yet.

"If you are using blacklists, other spam filters, or any other form of
training guides, you may be doing more harm than good. If the tool is less
accurate than DSPAM is, then you will be training DSPAM to be just as
inaccurate." As far as RBLs go, I'd be inclined to continue using a small
number of loose RBLs in order to save resources. I'd like to see some test
results before making a call on this though.

So where do we go from here? I'd like to see a team of volunteers formed to
work on a DSpam-toaster project. I'd like to participate in some fashion.
Anyone else?

P.S. I'm still going to attempt to fix my SA bayes DB problem in the
meantime. It's urgency just dropped a bit though.

I think that BOTH is the right way. I'm still not very convinced about DSPAM.

When I've the time I'm going to read the docs and setup a test server, but
meantime I'm sticking to spamassassin.

But I think the best is to integrate DSPAM support into simscan.

I've read a post about it somewhere, maybe on this list???.

I'm not keen on DSPAM, as it appears to require too much work.

I'm a big fan of TMDA. (tmda.net)

whitelisting, that works.
