Re: [QUAD-L] Go for walks?
Hi Dave, I have the Pride Quantum 6000 sitting in my mud room that I tried the other day. I'm in the process of trying to get an Omega Track wheelchair but since it's so much more expensive than your standard chair I need to try several other wheelchairs and document why they will not work for me. I did not like the Quantum because the caster wheels were causing so much vibration that all I did was spasm. Otherwise, it seemed like a nice chair. Jim
Re: [QUAD-L] Go for walks?
When I was still walking I helped a quadriplegic man, who ended up being my neighbors cousin, off the street in a snowstorm. I ended up calling 911 because he was pretty much frozen and drunk. He was on his way to the liquor store for some more antifreeze. He ended up spending a few days in the hospital because of frostbitten hands, feet and face. On a sad note, he passed away a couple years ago from a brain aneurysm while smoking a cigarette. Jim
Re: FW: Re: [QUAD-L] Mine and urine
I used "anti-twist" condom catheters and believe me they do twist if not checked after being placed in the wheelchair. Jim

Re: [QUAD-L] Go for walks?
I don't want a mid wheel drive wheelchair because it's too unstable when I drive. With the Omega Track you can get different types of tires, air suspension, which makes it almost like riding in a Cadillacand of course all the other gizmos we need. The Omega Track weighs 140 pounds more than my Invacare Torque and it is also a little longer, which makes it a little cumbersome inside but the stability of the Omega Track is unbelievable compared to my and the other wheelchairs I have tried so far. Jim
Re: FW: Re: [QUAD-L] Mine and urine
Basically, yes. I have the catheter tube longer and run in such away to where it does not get pinched while up in my wheelchair. My problem is at night. When I spasm I move sometimes, which causes the catheter to get pinched and this seems to be worse when the catheter tube is "looped" compared to when it is just straight. Overall, I have good luck with condom catheters as long as my caregivers take care putting them on properly. Jim

Pride Mobility chairs were never design to test the terrain, just safe transportation on hard surfaces. Kinda like a limo, being taken off-road. When you chose your Pride chair, has you planned on taking it off-road and getting it all muddy'd? LOL, people who evaluate others for wheelchairs, can't imagine anyone who is a quad testing the limits of an electric wheelchair, off road. What are your options now. Re: [QUAD-L] Go for walks?
The Frontier has great stability because it's on 6 wheels all the timeandit has regular suspension as in shocks plus thebig knobby tires only use 6-8 lbs pressure that absorbs lots of shock. I was amazed driving over thresholds and rocks and barely a bumb at all. You ever hit a rock going full speed? My other chair would've practically threw me out, now I hardly even dodge them. The Extreme 4x4 is 4 wheel drive and I don't know how you more stable than it. Anyways you can always test drive one. I didn't think I'd like the mid wheel drive until I tested it and I'll never go back to rear or front, I can get in and out of a lot more places now that I wouldn't have even considered before. ---Original Message--- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 10/13/05 11:10:02 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; quad-list@eskimo.com Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] Go for "walks"? [QUAD-L] NSCIA Survey
RRTC Survey Recruitment Your participation is needed for a national mail survey on SCI, Physical Activity, Exercise and Secondary Conditions! On behalf of the NSCIA and our research partner, the National Rehabilitation Hospital-Center for Health and Disability Research (NRH-CHDR), I would like to invite individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) to take part in a national survey on Physical Activity, Exercise, and Secondary Conditions in People with SCI. The survey is part of a Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (RRTC) on SCI: Promoting Health and Preventing Complications through Exercise. This RRTC is funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) which is a part of the US Department of Education. As a collaborator, the NSCIA has been involved in the various research and training activities of this RRTC. We are involved so we can help people with SCI to maximize the quality of their lives. We believe that projects like this will help make life better, easier, and more fun for people with SCI. Although the literature indicates that there are more than 200,000 people living with SCI in the United States , less than half report that they exercise or engage in physical activity. It is unclear if a lack of physical activity or exercise is associated with increased risks of other health-related problems, such as heart disease, urinary tract infections, and bone loss. The purpose of this survey is to therefore study the relationship between physical activity and exercise and the health of people with SCI. If you or someone you know has a spinal cord injury and is interested in taking part in this survey, please contact: Matt Kehn E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Phone: (202) 877-1603 Toll-free voice mail: 1-866-380-4344 (leave a message and Matt will call you back) If you are eligible, he will send you a consent form and the survey. You will be asked to fill out this mail survey once a year over two years. All the information you provide will remain strictly confidential . As the Executive Director of NSCIA, I have been impressed with your responsiveness to such requests in the past. The future health of people with SCI depends on our growing knowledge. I know that your contribution to this important research project will make a difference. Sharing your experiences will help us better understand how exercise and physical activity can benefit people with SCI. Without the input of people with SCI, all we are doing is guessing. With your help, we can learn from the experts. Sincerely,Marcie RothExecutive DirectorNSCIA

I know exactly what you are talking about. I try very hard to accelerate gently. I have an Invacare and I feel like I'm doing a wheelie if I take off with any force. Scares the bejeebers out of me. I also try hard not to stop on a hill (uphill). I always roll back a bit and then surge forward. The chair will inevitably tilt backward. From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED],quad-list@eskimo.com Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] Go for walks? Date: Thu, 13 Oct 2005 17:48:27 EDT I'm not talking about tipping the wheelchair over or anything like that. I'm talking about having excess movement that you would have to compensate with your arms while driving with electronic hand controls. The less movement you have with the wheelchair the easier it is to drive. Right now I have an Invacare Torque, we will drive chair with 2 suspension travel. My chair is locked in place with an EZ Lock that is located between the back tires and my front end is locked into place with an anti-tip device to prevent me from doing wheelies when I accelerate. If I lived somewhere where it was flat and I did not have to go up-and-down hills daily, I could probably get by without having the anti-tip device. I pullback on the control to accelerate, which pushes you back into your chair and when I push the control forward I slow down, which makes you lean forward. If I accelerate too hard my rear suspension on my chair will start to squish and when that happens I have to compensate that extra movement with my arms so I do not pull the throttle wide-open. When I'm stopping, my front suspension will not squish because I'm locked into the anti-tip device but I have to compensate for my upper body moving forward and the slop in the seat. Going up or down the hills multiplies the movements by at least a factor of two because of gravity. I also have my chest strap on nice and tight. With the extra rocking motion of a mid-wheel drive chair it would be extremely hard for me to drive up and down hills. The wheelchair company that I'm going through asked me if I wanted to try the Frontier, like you have, but since I have already tried a mid-wheel drive chair I declined but maybe I will have them get it for me to try anyways. I want a wheelchair that will let me do more off roading to open up my life more but if I am unable to drive safely that type of wheelchair will do me no good. Having a good stable, solid secure and safe driving platform is my No. 1 priority. Jim
