[QUAD-L] Chair range in miles

2007-04-05 Thread wheelchair

That is possible when a foreign "recline" is added to a power'd base. Often
the regular batteries are downsized to allow for enough room for the recline
device and its normal movement. The overnite charging will also have an
impact on the range of the powered device. Make also sure that the electric
connection are corrosion free and tight.

hahaha no but i wish! i have a hard enough time getting him to listen

he sees me as part of the pack, not the pack leader. he's actually
getting better now. i try to work with him on "sit", "stay", "shake",
and "down" and he does pretty well. when i take him out to play i
think he gets bored easily b/c he's so huge and i can't throw very
far -- if i throw a ball for him he can get to it w/ a few big steps
so after a couple rounds he's over it. lately i've been trying to
teach him "up" where he puts his front paws on my lap and stands up.
he did it for me yesterday -- that's progress!

so the short answer is "no"

[QUAD-L] Action required!

2007-04-05 Thread Angie Novak

This coming Monday, April 10, Senators in Washington will debate Senate Bill
Five (S5), the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007. Now is the time to
act and we must act quickly.
We believe that we have 66 "yes" votes ~ One more and we will have enough to
override the expected veto of President Bush. If we can get 67 votes, it will
put enormous pressure on those in the House who might oppose the research. We
have identified five Senators who might be willing to change their positions to
"Yes", but two of them stand out - Senator Casey of Pennsylvania and Senator
Sununu of New Hampshire. (For the full five and the reasons we think they may
be willing to support S5, click here). To find out how your Senators voted on
last year's version of this bill, click here.
For all of us, getting the 67th "yes" vote is our top priority. We are
launching the following coordinated campaign to raise the voice of the
pro-cures stem cell research community. We must make sure the Senate knows that
the will of the majority of Americans cannot be ignored.
Here is our strategy: We are asking you for four days of effort - no more than
an hour a day. Below is an overview of the campaign - we will send a separate
email for each day with the tools you need to have your voice heard. We will
send the day 1 email later today, but we will only send the other three
coordinated campaign emails to you if you ask for them. To receive these
emails, please email us now! We need your help to pass S5 to fund research for
therapies and cures!
Your efforts are critical. We will only be able to track our impact if you tell
us of your progress. Please let us know how many letters and calls you and your
friends and family are able to accomplish. When you send letters to the
editors, share a copy with us by emailing [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thank you!
  Email 1/Day 1:
Review Key Messages and Reach out to friends and family.
Review the Key Messages document, and keep it handy so that you can refer to
it.
Go through your phone book or contact list and reach out to them with your own
e-mail blast. Ask them to do what you are doing. Remind them how important
Senate Bill 5 is to you.
Email 2/Day 2:
Write letters and/or emails to Senators. Get your friends to do the same.
Write ONE letter and copy it six times, changing the name of the person you are
sending it to. Send it to SEVEN Senators: ONE each to the targeted FIVE
Senators and TWO to your own Senators. Remember our two key requests: "Vote Yes
on S5" and "Vote Yes on a Veto Override".
Make certain that at least FIVE of your friends and family members do the same.
By doing this, you have multiplied your impact from seven letters to 35
letters! If you can get TEN or TWENTY, go for it!
Email 3/Day 3: Write letters to the editor.
Write and submit a letter to the editor of your local newspaper - as many as
you can.
Rewrite the letter with minor changes, and send it to a major newspaper and/or
your statewide newspapers.
  Email 4/Day 4:
Make calls to Senators. Have your friends do the same.
Call at least the top two Senators on our list, and urge them to "Vote Yes on
S5" and "Vote Yes on a Veto Override".
Ask all of your friends to do the same. It only takes a minute to make a call.
Your voice will make a difference.
It's as easy as that. Four days...eight tasks...working together we can make
this happen!!
We'll send more if you are ready to fight the fight - four more emails, in fact
- over the next four days. Email us to sign up to receive these. Thank you
again for your continued support.
With hope,
Amy Daly, RN
Executive Director

Cities in the Fight for Research
Please take the time to read a policy paper prepared by Robert Klein, Chairman
of Proposition 71, and David Bluestone, the Public Policy Director of Americans
for Stem Cell Therapies and Cures. The policy paper discusses the important
role that San Francisco has played in promoting medical research as well as
supporting the mission of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
This organization was personally asked by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to
author this paper for the Mayor's re-election website, www.ActLocallySF.org.
The website is meant to be a forum for debate and discussion of policy topics.
Mayor Newsom does not endorse the positions set forth in the policy paper, and
in the words of the website itself, "Articles are posted for the purpose of
generating ideas and honest debate on how San Francisco can live up to its full
promise and potential". The policy paper can be accessed the paper directly by
clicking here.
Many cities have created environments that are supportive of stem cell research
and the business that can support it. We hope to write more papers about the
uniuqe contributions that cities in our Golden State have made to advance this
life-saving research.

[QUAD-L] Fwd: Medicare for the Ages: ALL Ages

2007-04-05 Thread DAANOO

** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
--- Begin Message ---
MEDICARE FOR THE AGES: ALL AGES

Within days of each other in March of 2007, the following articles were
released:

"Benefits for Seniors Eating up Kids' Share"[i]
"Insuring Children May Squeeze Seniors"[ii]
Which is it? Could it really be both? The real question is why does either
need to be true at all?

The oft-perceived generation gap in public funding is a fallacy. It is an easy
message to leverage politically, and the stories make for great copy, which is
why this myth persists. If some group were interested in, for example,
dismantling the traditional Medicare program, it would be very useful for them
to promulgate the idea that there is no room for such a program for elders and
those with disabilities if it takes away from the young people of our country.
Intergenerational conflict generates excellent quotes. And a headline-grabbing
message like that might be particularly useful at a time when trillions of
dollars are being spent in other less-than-popular arenas.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the last time there was a big flurry of media
activity focusing on the supposed generational rift was in the early 1990's,
during the Gulf War. Time Magazine, the Washington Post and Newsday all picked
up the message. The New York Times ran an editorial entitled "Elderly,
Affluent and Selfish", among other articles. One article stated that "after
subtracting military spending and interest, [Social Security and Medicare]
would cost more than 4 of every 10 federal dollars."[iii]

"After subtracting military spending and interest" is a remarkable qualifier.
That issue is where health care reformers should cast their lenses, not the
supposed conflict between young and old. Social programs have for so long been
put in a bubble together, that people have come to believe that their funding
is somehow separate from the rest of the budget. We do not have to rob Peter
to pay Paul. Rather, we need to have the political will to focus our resources
on the health care issues in our country and embrace the obvious solution; an
expanded Medicare program.

The United States pays more per capita for health care than any other
first-world country, yet almost a fifth of our population goes uninsured. A
disproportionate number of those uninsured are young adults. Right now
approximately 33% of young adults lack health insurance, compared with about
16% overall.[iv]

Before Medicare existed, only about 50% of people 65 or older had health
insurance. By 1970, four years after Medicare went into effect, 97% of those
65 and older had health insurance. Access to health insurance coverage meant
that more older people received needed medical care... Access to health
insurance also meant that Medicare beneficiaries and their families no longer
had to bear the full cost of their care, helping to reduce poverty among older
people and their families.[v] The inception of the Medicare program solved the
dilemma of health care for a forgotten population 40 years ago. An expanded
Medicare program holds that same promise for the latest generation left behind
by private health insurers.

"Most people overlook the most affordable way to achieve universal coverage;
putting all of us under the Medicare umbrella," says Merton C. Bernstein, a
founding member of the National Academy of Social Insurance and the Coles
Professor of Law Emeritus at Washington University in St. Louis. "That
single-payer system would reduce non-benefit spending by doctors, hospitals,
clinics, laboratories and health care insurers by about $300 billion a year,
providing funds to insure everyone without additional outlays.

Other savings measures could supplement Medicare-for-All," Bernstein says.
"Only a single-payer plan enables savings on a scale sufficient to make
universal coverage feasible. And as with Medicare today, patients would choose
their own doctors - the choice most of us cherish and that private insurance
often limits."[vi]

Despite repeated partisan attempts to minimize Medicare and give it away to
private industry, the traditional Medicare program remains a reliable source of
care for its beneficiaries. Rather than trusting the private sector that
continues to leave people behind as it chases profits, it is time for all
Americans who need and value health care to look to Medicare as their model.
Medicare works because it is efficient, stable, guaranteed, and universally
available. A health care program as established and reliable as Medicare
should not be dismantled, but expanded. That expansion would unite all
generations, rather than falsely divide them.

For more information on Medicare and health care for all, contact attorney
Judith Stein () or Matt Shepard () in the Center for Medicare Advocacy's Connecticut office at

1. How do I transfer the few mp3 songs I have onto the I-Pod? It
has a connector for the computer. Can I just drag and drop into the
I-Pod?

2. How do I strip songs from a CD to put on the I-Pod?

I sure thank you,

ipods don't read mp3 files, they are apple products.

ipods are mp3 players -- my itunes is all mp3's which all went on to
my ipod and work fine. mp3's work for macs as well as windows -- same
w/ iTunes.

[QUAD-L] wc tires

2007-04-05 Thread wheelchair

I wish it was that easy and I hope that its still that easy. DMEs are
hiding behind their counters everytime
someone rolls in. Many are requiring their customers to pay up front and
then receive a rebate when CMS agrees to pay and finally DOES pay. Often,
payments are slow due to code errors and refiling of the paperwork. And more
denials. General policies have gone out the window with across the board
approval.
Most don't realize how bad it can be until they need a new chair or have to
have their chairs repaired.

[QUAD-L] wc tires

2007-04-05 Thread wheelchair

I usually advise to call the person/company that you purchased your chair
from. They will know and can obtain or carry the replacement tire with or
without tubes. Tubeless are nice but offer hard rides. Tubes can go flat,
but
generally offer a smoother ride. If choosing tubes, use Slime for protection.
A tire that is the wrong size, in height or width can be dangerous. Choose
wisely.

Re: [QUAD-L] GREAT danes

2007-04-05 Thread delimited4
If your chair has gel cell batteries you won't be going for 14 mile rides
between charges. If you have U-1 batteries you are essentially driving a barbi
car. I'm guessing the guys talking about such long rideas are useing
maintenance free large batteries with over 100 amp hours. Check the amp hours
on your batteries. If they are 70 or 80, you might go 4 or 5 miles tops. some
chairs will take the coiled glass mat bateries by optima. These can deliver
incredible range. Remember to charge them properly.
good luck

Re: [QUAD-L] film required

Yup, pretty sick stuff. I don't mind them doing it to themselves but I resent
them wanting benefits that we have had to fight for. When they are done
mutilating themselves, they should be promptly put into an institution for the
insane. The can spend entire days learning to dress and undress but they should
be seen for what they are, insane, not handicapped.
If they want a wheelchair they can have a kitchjen chair with castors. Same
thing my great uncle used after returning from ww1. When they get infections
they should have to wait for the slow sluggish labs that many of us have. And
when they get angry they should be locked in closets. and please do not give
these mental defectives a parking permit.

OK, now for something completely revolting. If you belong to Netflix, check out
a film called "Whole." It is a documentary about disabled wannabes. Everyone on
this list would compromise his soul (well, almost) for a healthy body, and
these people long to join our ranks. It leaves me speechless. Check it out.

Re: [QUAD-L] wc tires

2007-04-05 Thread DAANOO
My battery charger quit working and I was down to about 3 bars and they
wanted me to have my aid come get a nether charger that when we got it home, it

was the wrong model. My brother saved today and he was able to come out and
somehow get the connector to work but it seems to smell a little bit after the
discharge so I have not charged for two days as the bars did not go down. I
don't know what I do if he would not have come because my back up wheelchair
will not work, because my aid did not charge regularly and the batteries are
now dead, which my brother just bought last year at $188. I wrote my
wheelchair company several times and calls them but just got voicemail. She
would
not even tell me how long it's going to take to get the batteries and if she
had received by doctor order. She e-mailed me to not write her or call the
voicemail anymore. I could not believe that. If my brother would not have
been able to get the connector to work, I'm not sure what I would be doing.and
I'm not sure what he did. I would be sitting in a wheelchair without any
power. The Permobil is almost impossible to push. I wonder if they are all
that way. I don't like to be in my back up wheelchair, because it causes
pressure on my rear as it only reclines and slides you down each time you
recline..
I had to stay in bed a week after the last time I tear was repaired when it
took three weeks to get the part because of the pressure although it was not
open. We are told that we are responsible for our own arrangements if our
wheelchairs are not working. No one will cover repairs to keep a backup
functioning.. The company I deal with is Apria. It seems like they have only
one
person to repair anything and getting parts is so slow. They claim they are
looking for someone, they probably don't want to pay anyone and make us wait.
It seems really unfair. We don't have a lot of companies to choose from
like able-bodied persons do with cars.

Does anyone else have this problem, when their wheelchair is down.
It seems like things will get worse with the new policy of waiting till the
wheelchair repair costs are as much as a new chair. We will be having
repairs all the time and not at once, so we cannot get a new chair for a long
time.
The repair people told me that it doesn't matter whether you have insurance
or Medicare that the insurance pretty much follows the same rules as
Medicare . What does anybody know about that or is it make a difference on
what
kind of insurance you have
