Speaking of things legal. I was asked by the city 'fathers' to take down
my website ( old Glendale Commission on
http://ocgrands.com/gcopd/index-old.html Persons With Disabilities (GCOPD)
) where I had pictures of local voting places and described the shortfalls
in regards to handicapped accessibility that we the mayor's commission on
persons with disabilities were chartered to inspect. They claimed it was
'improper' to put city oriented research and info on a private website and
could possibly lead to legal implications. When my district representative
called, she wondered why we were doing that activity anyway. Talk about the
left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing then cloaking it all
in legaleeze mumbo jumbo.

You really do need a shower chair, but I found these bathrooms need a copper
subfloor with a special tile that drains to a universal drain in the
bathroom. The tile has microgrooves to direct the water to the drain and
theres very little tilt. The copper subfloor is needed because anything you
do may fail in one or more places and the copper can also be designed to
drain. I like putting a heated cement subfloor below the copper. Along with
a vent fan the bathroom needs a small fan stirring the air for about 10
minutes after you leave it. It should be set to turn on every 12 hours if
its not used. This helps stop mold and mildew from forming.

picky, picky, pickynext thing you'll want is a ballot. If you are on his
commitee then hes right. You can't make the findings public untill the city has
had time to address them. You are suppose to spot them, point them out and then
wait for a bribe to shut up.
If your not on his commitee you can do as you please in finding violations and
pointing them out. The ADA has provisions for negotiating the remedies to the
problem.

On the other hand, It took them six years to remedy the polling place I went
to. It had 3 steps up to get inside where you imediately walked down three
steps. Obviously built by an architech that believed in making things hard on
everyone.

Have you tried your local public buildings, such as town halls, schools,
theaters, restaurants, hotels, motels, etc. I have found buildings 5 years old
that are grandfathered in. TGIFridays are about the worst as a restaurant
chain. Amuzement parks, no freakin way do they want crips on the property.
The city hall in my city is on the second floor with 14 steps and no elevator
or plans to correct any shortcomings. If I were elected to city counsel I
couldn't take part in a single meeting. I am welcome to protest as long as I
don't block the door.
I was fined $35 for running my chair in the street. The mayor brought his desk
to the firestation to levy the fine and when I told them I'd rather goto jail
it was revoked. Can't get a wheelchair in the jail and frankly, nobody cares
that much. welcome to America and the ADA.

[QUAD-L] Psuedamonas UTI

2007-10-02 Thread Danny Hearn
Hi all...I have had a bad UTI for a month now, I just got the results of a
Urine Culture today, and they told me I have psuedamonas bacteria infection and
are going to contact my Urologist because only I.V. drugs can fight it. Since
i've had a supra-pubic catheter put in 7 years ago --- this is the ( 3rd ) time
i've had this type bacteria, that will probably require I.V. drugs once again.
It is very depressing, Has anyone else had repeated serious UTI's such as
Psuedamonas??? We are wondering how many times one can use the I.V. drugs for
this before getting resistant to them...I don't know what options there
are..I will ask my Uro Doctor but he seems to not know a lot on the subject.

counteract itself since it is a powerful broad spectrum antibiotic but nope.

2007-10-02 Thread Stacy Harim
I realize that but what I was saying it isn't helping. I've taken an extra
pill andstill not working. Zyvox, the antibiotic that I am on is broad spectrum
and causing theaccidents by killing the bacteria and the accidents are
causingthe uti's because they are messy, especially after I do a bowel prep. I
think I'm done and then I have really loose stool the next morning so I've
given upon a bowel prep because it comes out no matter what. I've been taking
the acidpohilus for a couple of weeks so I've given up. What is depressing is
as soon as I get the help, I'm ready to get up out of bed but will be alone
during the day so if I have an accident, I'll have to sit in it so now I don't
want to get up until I get my bowels back to normal. I know its the antibiotic
because I didnttake it for a few weeks and was normal about 2 weeks after I
stopped it and then a week after I started taking it again, I became a mess
again. It sucks because they want to make
sure that there isn't anymore infection in my back that caused the
osteomyelitis which I know is important and I thought all this time it was for
the VRE that it also got rid of. On top of it, my hair is falling out and I
have no idea why. That just started a couple of months ago so I know it isn't
from the infection or surgery due to my spinal fusion.

Stacy, acidophilus will do nothing for the infection. It is to replace the good
bacteria that the antibiotics is killing off along with the bad bacteria.

Re: [QUAD-L] Psuedamonas UTI

2007-10-02 Thread Lori Michaelson
Hi Danny,

You and I have been talking (around 2 years now?) about the chronic UTIs
that we both have
been plagued with. But it seems like you have not had very good luck with
competent doctors.
*Neither have I* but I finally found out that the culprit were those very
big, big bladder stones
that had been sitting in growing in my bladder *for years and kept growing.*

Anyway, you said that you have had a bad UTI for a month now! If it is
bad then I must assume
it has gone systemic and you have been running a fever with severe chills
for a whole month?
Something does not sound right. Not to mention being extremely
dangerous!!! In other words...

what the F***? have you or the doctors than waiting on/for? After a whole
month... you just
got urine culture results today which only take three days (on the outside)?

Just before, and after, having my bladder stones removed a year ago this
past May...
the bug that came after me twice in 2 months was Pseudomonas. It is one of
the worst ones and both times
I had to be treated with IV antibiotics via a PICC line at home.

Again, you and I have discussed these ongoing UTIs both on list and off
list. There must
be some source, or culprit, causing your chronic infections. Mine was
bladder stones
but it has to be a process of elimination kind of deal. And only you know
your body best!

You already know that I have had repeated serious UTIs such as Pseudomonas.
Yes, it is very depressing not to mention life-threatening. And going
through an entire month
... how in the world did you let it go that long if it WAS so BAD? My
fevers that bad really quick
and I thought I would die before ibuprofen in some sort of antibiotic began
kicking in.

Then finding out that Pseudomonas has been growing in there the whole time?
I would
began to think that your urologist OR even your regular physician... sits
around reading
comic books rather than trying to help you!

As far as how many times one can use the IV drugs before the bug gets
resistant to them
it is really academic if you NEED them anyway. My greatest fear with all my
troubles ALSO
was the fear that the bugs were growing more and more resistant. After
all...
when you have to resort to IV antibiotics... that is scary enough! There is
nothing left to resort to.
This is what leads me to think that your position does not give a rat's ass
about your well-being.
How you describe it... this is dead serious and something not to just brush
off again and again.

Also, like I have told you so many times... you might need to travel to get
a better urologist
and one really cares about your well-being! This quack that you keep going
to has not
been very helpful... has he? Therefore, because these things can get quite
serious...
you better get real proactive real fast. If I sound like I am yelling at
you or preaching
to you... maybe it is because that I care more about you than your doctor
does! Tough love
if you want to call it that. :-)

I was so upset when I got a Pseudomonas infection AFTER having my bladder
stones out
and my doctor was not happy either. *I* finally found the answer on the
Internet. To be brief...
I found out that by me eating a banana a day... that amount of potassium was
severely
altering the pH of my urine. It was staying too alkaline (7.5 or more) when
it should be
much more acidic to keep the bugs away (ideally a pH of 6).

After I stopped eating bananas... wala! I have not had an infection since!
Who would have
ever thought? My doctor was unsure why we could not get my pH number lower
even by
taking cranberry capsules, drinking cranberry juice and other acidic juices.

She (my Urologist) was pretty impressed that I was able to find out the
information that I did. My body
was not going to be able to take many more infections and the bugs were just
getting stronger
and stronger and that would ultimately lead to my demise.

That is the second time the Internet information has saved my life.

Anyway, Danny... please heed my advice to go get a damn new doctor! Also,
have your
pH checked if you have not already. If your urologist is competent, as well
as the
medical technicians who tested your urine, they should be able to provide
you
with what your last pH was during the culture. Just call and ask because it
is usually part of the lab report.

If not... insist on finding out even if you have to give them a new specimen
and ask for that specifically.

Good luck buddy!

You are a pretty good detective Lori, I salute your efforts and successes.
I had about 6 utis last year, 3 of them requiring hospitalization and fancy
new (to me) drugs Zosyn and _Vancomyosin_
(http://www.jci.org/cgi/reprint/114/9/1181.pdf) , and finally in November I
told the doc to remove what I
thought was the offending part. I had been using a condom catheter since 1967
and
figured it was doing me just fine even tho it allowed me to retain about 300
cc in my bladder. I was sure foleys were a much bigger possibility for
introducing utis into my system. Now since my _orchiectomy_
(http://www.beavercleaver.net/orchiectomy_slides.htm) and the use of a foley
(a bunch of them
actually) since 11-2007, I have had only 1 or 2 minor utis. I now seem to be
noticing cleaner output since using collidal silver, alka seltzer, and vinegar

Hi Danny,

You and I have been talking (around 2 years now?) about the chronic UTIs
that we both have
been plagued with. But it seems like you have not had very good luck with
competent doctors.
Neither have I but I finally found out that the culprit were those very
big, big bladder stones
that had been sitting in growing in my bladder for years and kept growing.

Anyway, you said that you have had a bad UTI for a month now! If it is
bad then I must assume
it has gone systemic and you have been running a fever with severe chills
for a whole month?
Something does not sound right. Not to mention being extremely dangerous!!!

My body
was not going to be able to take many more

I always hesitate to write a long e-mail and diatribe but is sometimes to
get all the information
across... it has to be done that way.

Yes... the one IV antibiotic that was used on me for was Zosyn as well. I
think for Proteus.
Vancomycin has been around for approximately 10 years.

So many doctors as well as the spinal cord injured population hold by their
statements
that indwelling Foley catheters are more opportunistic for bacteria. But I
have to disagree.
For the first 20 years of my injury within indwelling catheter... I only had
about four or five
UTIs. The doctors were always so surprised.

It wasn't until I had boulders in my bladder that I began to have problems.

In the near future I will write about lab technicians and lazy ones and how
we can suffer from their
laziness. It occurs so frequently that if patients really knew what was
going on in the laboratories
they surely would not be paying for doctors or medical anything!

using this technique in conjunction with steroid therapy for the purpose of

[QUAD-L] ever get a cold?

2007-10-02 Thread John S.
It seems like y'all took acidophylus and it caused a UTI from a psuedamonas
strain. I've never not tested positive for psuedamonas. If it isn't dominant
then your pretty normal and the best treatment is excersize and rest. We have
these immune systems that can pull us through some pretty nasty infections
without a lot of the major anti biotics.
I use to have a para friend that intermitant catheterized himself with a
catheter he kept in his hatband. Yea, Yucky! I'm cetainly not telling anyone
what to take or not take, I'm just pointing out that as quads most of us do not
have impaired immune systems. How many of you remember having a cold. 32
years as a quad, I've had some kickass infections, septicemia, pneumonia, bone
infections, influenza, even a brain infection(explains a lot) but never a cold.
About Stacy having the runs. every anti-biotic has that as a side effect which
in turn subjects you to e.coli which causes a different infection that needs
another anti-biotic that also causes the runs. Trust me the acidophylus didn't
make it worse. In fact, acidophylus and other pro biotics eat the stuff the bad
bacteria needs and can help maintain your system where your not taking the
stuff that gives you the runs. Also, opiates will help stop the runs and
several over the counter treatments may work for you. I do wish my advice would
work quickly for you, Stacy. I also spend long periods of time waiting for help
when I get runs or a condom comes off. I often have gas and cant tell if I had
an accident. I have a weird neighbor that thinks that is so funny he stops in
to break wind to try to torment me.
We have quadriplegia in common , but quads just aren't all alike. What works
for me may not work for you. I don't treat UTI's as long as I can live with
them. I get a low grade fever, I take tylenol. About every 5 years I get an IVP
to see what my system is doing and if there is any stones.
The ladies don't have an option to use a condom catheter and looking at some
new statistics, there isn't a significant reduction in infections with one.
A lot of the differences we have is the doctors we see. My doctors are usually
just curious why I'm still alive. I don't go for tests that don't produce
information about me that I don't need. Doctors love running tests on us that
produce generalized data that has nothing to with me. My doctor told me I had a
syrinx before an MRI was available. I'm on Medicare/Medicaid and this test will
change nothing.
Oh, by the way, if you sit in on a part of a medical lecture, nobody cares. If
there is a university hospital nearby, I highly recomend this. Just say you
didn't want to interupt and couldn't leave without help. Dr. Randall Braddom is
a goldmine of information and only talks down to stupid doctors. The people at
your local GNC can be great help.
Once again, Stacy, don't give up. it is a hard balance to get but it will work.
If you use an opiat to stop from having a bowel movement then use miri-lax the
day before you want your bowels to move. Wear lots of perfume?
Seriously, do you guys get colds?
