[QUAD-L] Fwd: ICYMI: Momentum to Update SSI's Asset Limits

2023-12-15 Thread Jim Lubin

-- Forwarded message -
From: United Spinal Association

I know with the holiday season, travel plans, and last-minute shopping,
things can get hectic for all of us.

But in case you missed the email we sent earlier in the week, I just wanted
to bump it up to the top of your inbox because we do have a very real and
exciting chance to make a long-overdue change to SSI's asset limits - so
long as all of us take a moment to send a quick message to our members of
Congress. Can you help us?

So much has changed since 1989. One thing that has not changed is the asset
limits for Supplementary Security Income (SSI) - $2,000 for an individual
and $3,000 for a couple.

SSI is a lifeline for millions of people with disabilities in the United
States. Not only does it provide some income support, but the Medicaid
eligibility it provides is so crucial for so many. However, the lack of an
update to the asset limit since 1989 has trapped those on SSI in effective
poverty - and nobody should be trapped in poverty because they have a
disability. It's long past time this was addressed.

Thankfully, momentum is building to finally fix this. The *SSI Savings
Penalty Elimination Act (H.R. 5408/S. 2767)* has been introduced by members
of Congress from both parties in both the House of Representatives and the
Senate. A wide coalition of supporters, including disability organizations,
businesses, and religious groups, have mobilized to tell Congress to pass
this legislation.
Support the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act

This bill would raise the SSI asset limit to $10,000 for an individual and
$20,000 for a couple and then update that each year for inflation. This
would allow people on SSI to be able to save for emergencies, remove a
barrier to employment, and make it easier for people with disabilities to
find safe, stable housing.

What we need to do now is contact our Representatives and Senators to ask
them to cosponsor this important bill that would change the lives of so
many. If you have trouble with the button above, you can click the link here
.

Thanks,

Steve Lieberman

To all the friends, family and supporters of Greg Wickenburg,
Our hearts are heavy to have to tell you that Greg passed away last night,
February 5th 2023. He was surrounded by family and died peacefully at home.
Greg was an amazing, inspiring, creative, generous, determined, funny
"smartass", and as genuine as they come.
Even facing his difficult challenges in life, he never failed to stay
positive. He will forever be in our hearts and now he is free to fly.
We love you Greg. You will be missed by all.

What happens to the ABLE account after the death of the account owner?click
for more information
When the account owner passes away, the funds in the ABLE account can be
used for any outstanding qualified disability expenses, including funeral
and burial expenses. The ABLE plan can advise you on what is needed such as
a death certificate or whether there is a special form to complete. It is
up to the individual state, whether or not to file a claim for Medicaid
recovery of funds which were paid on behalf of the account owner since the
account was opened. If someone has never received Medicaid, this is not an
issue. If the state pursues a claim, In addition to allowing for the
repayment of outstanding QDEs, including funeral and burial expenses,
Medicaid buy-in premiums paid since opening the ABLE account will be
reimbursed. Thereafter, the remainder of funds are payable to the Estate.

Age Limit — Eligibility is currently limited to people who developed their
disability before age 26; anyone who becomes disabled later in life does
not qualify. Fortunately, in late 2022, Congress signed off on adjusting
this age limitation beginning in 2026. At that time, individuals who became
disabled before age 46 (rather than age 26) will be eligible to open an

I knew someone who was a C2 quad dependent on a vent to breathe and changed
to a diaphragm pacemaker. She wrote an article about it
https://files.wearesrna.org/newsletters/j5/journal-5-11.htm

She suffered from depression and stopped eating then passed away a few
years ago.

1219/S.331), which would expand eligibility for ABLE accounts by increasing
the age limit on the onset of disability from 26 to

Fellow advocate,

United Spinal supports the *ABLE Age Adjustment Act* (H.R. 1219/S.331),
which would expand eligibility for ABLE accounts by increasing the age
limit on the onset of disability from 26 to 46, allowing 6 million more
individuals the opportunity to enroll. ABLE accounts are tax-advantaged
savings accounts for individuals with disabilities and their families which
can cover disability-related expenses such as education, housing,
transportation, employment support and other support expenses.

Seven years after the passage of the ABLE Act, it is time to pass the ABLE
Age Adjustment Act. The opportunity provided through the ABLE Act to
assist in securing more financial stability for individuals with
disabilities and their families is profound; however, it is limited to
those individuals with an age of onset of disability prior to their 26th
birthday. Many individuals who could benefit from ABLE accounts are left
out since many conditions can and do occur later in life, including
multiple sclerosis, ALS, or paralysis. Additionally, veterans who become
disabled as a result of their service after age 25 are currently ineligible
for ABLE accounts. Tell Congress to support the ABLE Age Adjustment Act
today!

Thanks,

[QUAD-L] Update about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments for Beneficiaries

2020-04-03 Thread Jim Lubin
Commissioner of Social Security Shares Update about COVID-19 Economic
Impact Payments for Beneficiaries

Posted on April 3, 2020 by Andrew Saul, Commissioner, Social Security
Administration
“I want to provide an update to people who receive benefits from the Social
Security Administration.

The Department of the Treasury (Treasury) announced on April 1 that Social
Security beneficiaries who are not typically required to file tax returns
will not need to file an abbreviated tax return to receive an economic
impact payment. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will use the information
on the Form SSA-1099 to generate $1,200 economic impact payments to Social
Security beneficiaries who did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019.

Treasury, not Social Security, will make automatic payments to Social
Security beneficiaries. Beneficiaries will receive these payments by direct
deposit or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their Social
Security benefits.

For updates from the IRS, visit their web page.

Note for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Recipients:

We are working closely with Treasury to address outstanding questions about
our SSI recipients in an attempt to make the issuance of economic impact
payments as quick and efficient as possible. We realize people are
concerned, and the IRS will provide additional information on their web
page when available. Please note that we will not consider economic impact
payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from
resources for 12 months.

We will continue to update Social Security’s Coronavirus COVID-19 web page
as further details become available.”

Today, in keeping with its commitment to ensure states have the necessary
tools to respond to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) approved an additional six
state Medicaid waiver requests under Section 1135 of the Social Security
Act (Act), bringing the total number of approved Section 1135 waivers for
states to twenty nine. The waivers were approved within days of states’
submitting them, with average approval time taking less than seven calendar
days. The waivers offer states new flexibilities to focus their resources
on combatting the outbreak and providing the best possible care to their
Medicaid beneficiaries. These waivers support President Trump’s commitment
to operating a COVID-19 response that is locally executed, state managed
and federally supported. All Section 1135 approval letters will be posted
here

as
they are issued.

CMS approved waivers for the following states today:

   - New York
   - Colorado
   - Hawaii
   - Idaho
   - Massachusetts
   - Maryland

CMS provides guidance to states on how to apply for Section 1135 waivers
through the Medicaid Disaster Response Tool Kit, which can be found here
.
To further the agency’s efforts, CMS has developed checklists and tools

to
expedite requests and approvals for waivers and other commonly requested
flexibilities. CMS will continue to expeditiously review and approve, as
appropriate, all Section 1135 waivers and other requests that the agency
receives to ensure that we are providing our state partners with the
maximum flexibility they need to care for their Medicaid beneficiaries
during the public health emergency.

These waivers, and earlier CMS actions in response to COVID-19, are part of
the ongoing White House Task Force efforts. To keep up with the important

[QUAD-L] Congress Finally Passes The Disability Integration Act (DIA) – Rolling Without Limits: Your mobility may be limited. Your voice, boundless.

2019-07-10 Thread Jim Lubin
https://www.transfermaster.com/blog/view-post/Congress-Finally-Passes-The-Disability-Integration-Act-DIA

Congress Finally Passes The Disability Integration Act (DIA)

Disability rights advocates explained that only the passage of the Disability
Integration Act (DIA)

can
guarantee enough protection for Americans with disabilities.

Over the past 3 years, disability rights advocates have lobbied for the
passage of the Disability Integration Act (DIA)

 by Congress
.
The DIA

was
finally passed by Congress in June 2019. The act was first introduced into
Congress

by
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and into the House by Representatives

Jim
Sensenbrenner (R-WI).

People with disabilities who need long-term services and supports are still
forced to live in institutions and are losing their civil rights. The act
is aimed at protecting the civil right of people with disabilities.
Although the provision of community-based services is the most
cost-effective way to support people with disabilities, institutional bias
remain within the Medicaid

system,
specifically where the federal government requires states to pay for
institutional care, and where coverage of most community-based services is
considered optional.

John Griffin, a member of the Independent Living Centre of South California

said,
"[The] Disability Integration Act (DIA) will help people with disabilities
across the United States to enjoy more independence and accessibility."

With the passage of the Disability Integration Act (DIA), people who are
eligible for long-term rehab services and supports would have the right to
live in their homes and receive these services, rather than live in
institutions. In other words, people with disabilities will have the legal
right to decide how they receive services and support as well as where they
are provided (i.e., in their home or institutional setting).

The DIA would also require states to increase affordable and accessible
housing for people with disabilities.

Shawn Paul, a member of United Spinal

said,
"The DIA will help governors in paying more attention to accessibility
across their various states."

The Disability Integration Act (DIA) will help secure Americans with
disabilities and help strengthen the Medicaid

 and Medicare

.

His kidney biopsy reveals that they have completely shut down and no meds
can reverse it. So he will probably need dialysis 3 times a week for life,
but there is always hope that things will reverse. They continually need to
drain fluid from around his lungs. Almost 2 liters on two different

permanent valve to make it easier and less invasive to drain fluid if

[QUAD-L] Re: NCIL Advocacy re EVV.doc

2019-04-13 Thread Jim Lubin
National Council on Independent Living

Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) Task Force Statement of Principles and
Goals

Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) requirements were passed into federal
law as part of the 21st Century Cures Act (‘Cures Act’) of 2016. The Cures
Act requires the implementation of EVV to monitor all personal care
services (PCS) and home health care services (HHCS) funded by Medicaid.

States were initially tasked to ensure that all state Medicaid and waiver
PCS provided in the home comply with EVV guidelines by January 2019. Recent
federal legislation extended this deadline to January 2020. Because many
people with disabilities rely on these services to live independently in
our homes and communities, the disability community is negatively impacted
in a variety of ways by EVV policies and mandates.

The National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) believes that people with
disabilities have the right to be integrated in society and control our own
lives. EVV systems undermine the intent and integrity of the Independent
Living Model and personal care services, including Consumer-Directed
Services (CDS). EVV systems threaten the privacy of countless Americans
with disabilities who would otherwise be free of intrusive governmental
monitoring.

NCIL advocates for the leadership of people with disabilities in all policy
discussions and decisions that impact our lives. The expertise and active
engagement of people with disabilities is critical in all EVV development,
implementation, and evaluation.

I found I was asking my caregivers several times each day to press the
buttons on my bed mattress controller at the foot of my bed, either
"static" or "alternate". I found a way I can now "press" the buttons myself
from a phone app and SwitchBot. It's a little robotic finger that presses
buttons! It's been working great. The SwitchBot Hub Plus can also send IR
signals to control a TV or other things. Very handy.

here's a video review on youtube https://youtu.be/8b5aWO5sBoE

I remember awhile back someone asking for a way to press the power button

Support S.651 ABLE Age Adjustment Act
United Spinal supports the ABLE Age Adjustment Act, S.651, which would
increase the age of onset of disability from up to the age of 26 to up to
the age of 46, adding millions of new potential ABLE account holders into
the pool of eligible individuals. ABLE accounts are tax-advantaged savings
accounts for individuals with disabilities and their families which can
cover disability-related expenses such as education, housing,
transportation, employment support and other support expenses.

Under the plan known as the ABLE Age Adjustment Act, S. 651, individuals
with disabilities that present by age 46 could open the accounts. Current

I like giving my opinion on various topics. I figure Google and Facebook
know a lot about my likes by tracking me everywhere I visit anyway so, by
doing the surveys I might as well get something out of it.

Using my referral link I will receive 2000 points after you complete 4

Guess it depends on what method you are using to access the computer:
voice, switch, mouth joystick. I think most methods can be used with either
Apple Mac or Microsoft Windows.

The Morse code device I use is hardware so it works with any computer with
an usb port, it doesn't matter what operating system it has (Windows, Mac,
Linux, Android). I can use it with no voice and no hand or head movement. I
sip and puff morse code into an air tube.

Mouth joystick is another hardware option that connects to a usb port. It
requires some head movement but enables you to move a mouse around.

Use voice commands to control TV on Xbox One S

As with all voice navigation on Xbox, using voice while watching TV in

listening to the television. For the last month or so, thanks to your
recommendation, I have been using an Xbox to control my television. Where
as before, I had to sit and endure the same channel for hours on end. A
very frustrating experience indeed. With the Xbox voice control capability
my situation has improved significantly. Being able to change or mute the
volume, change chanels at a whim or even switching the TV on and off has
enabled me to have much greater control over my environment. This is a
significant improvement from the past where I was totally dependent on a
caregiver to do these simple tasks. It was very frustrating when I had no
caregiver and the chanel wasn't right, or I wanted to take a nap and the
volume was too high. Having the freedom that your solution has afforded me
has greatly improved my quality of life, and your assistance helping
setting the system up is really appreciated.
Thank you very much!"

7 days
i have taken antibiotics before but i never ever had such a bad reaction

not eat anything because of no appetite felt, felt anxiety, got blurry
vision and could not sleep from stomach upset.
i finished the week but i will NEVER EVER take that med again.
Can you guys please tell me how you put up with uti antibiotics that you
had a hard time takings.
Also is there any ideas to prevent these bad side effects when taking uti
meds.
What if i had taken this in IV and it would bypass stomach?
What do you guys think?
I hope some of your comments back can help me
Thank you sooo much.

Re: [QUAD-L] Do you know of a good way to send and receive text messages ?

2018-11-09 Thread Jim Lubin
Google voice is what I've been using too. It's free.

After I got a smart phone I started using a program Pulse SMS. It works
better with pictures and group messages.

Re: [QUAD-L] Mobizen

2018-11-02 Thread Jim Lubin
I think I did before Mobizen but couldn't get it to work. Vyor is working
good for me.

Yes, Android, moto g6. When first deciding on which phone to get I could
not find any way to control and iphone from a Windows pc. I can mirror an
iphone/ipad to my pc but can't control it. With Android I can use my pc
(with my adaptive keyboard/mouse) to control the phone.
