Pretty cool. I just needed it.

I understand having to buy the plug sockets or light switches, but the Echo
should have that other stuff built in. And should be more specific in the

[QUAD-L] Hands free cell phone

2017-07-29 Thread Joan Anglin
Hands free cell phone For those of you who have no hand or finger control
and have not found a way to utilize a cell phone voice controlled, I'd like
to share my solution.

I have tried numerous hands free devices', the no button hands free, using
speakerphone alone, a special blue tooth, but none of them survived for
long-term.

Im using a Samsung S4 with Dragon Mobile Assistant. I have attentive mode
turned on in Dragon. I turn on hands free mode in settings, my device. I
use screen on to keep my screen awake. This works then as a speaker phone,
but does not work with the blue tooth. However I discovered I can use an
ear bud and have a private conversation. And still call out, text message,
do quite a few things that I'm still learning about. I know it works in
android at least. Good luck.

RE: [QUAD-L] Who cares for the family caregivers?

2017-05-19 Thread Joan Anglin
Dave

I totally agree with the strain that it puts on families. Going on 27
years, my youngest daughter was only 15, and it has been a roller-coaster
ride over the years. She learned how to take care of me while I was still
in rehab, and although she wasn’t my attendant until later my PCA’s would
expect her to take over if they couldn’t make it. It was very difficult to
keep a mother daughter relationship, when the mother needs the help and the
daughter feels obligated to step in and help no matter what she had planned.

She has been my attendant for the last nine years four days a week, and I’ve
tried to make sure that she’s doing this willingly and not under any sense
of obligation. But it is difficult. For example, my night time attendant
is going to be off for 2 to 3 months for medical reasons. She just assumed
that my daughter would step in and take over those 5 days. I had to explain
that my daughter would of course be available for an emergency, but for the
most part her days off and evenings were untouchable. It has taken up a lot
of talking and walking in each other’s footsteps for my daughter and I too
have a great relationship, mother/daughter and client/attendant being
balanced.

I was a caregiver for my mother for three years before I broke my neck, and
that gave me the different perspective to help me prepare for being the
“needy” person. One of the little things that has helped us is the phrase
“I would like you” vs. “I need you” to allow my daughter, my older
daughter, and my daughter in law to say no without any guilt feelings when I
say “I would like you”. I try not to use “I need you” unless I have no
other options.

Each state is so different in what they are willing to provide in
caregiving-and even among agencies. The program I have allows me 5 hours
per day of direct care only. They are not allowed to take me grocery
shopping, start dinner for the family, clean my house-except for my direct
living quarters-, take me to doctors etc.. Other programs will provide
housecleaning, cooking, taking you out if you have $25.00 an hour to spare.
So all of the rest of the things fall upon my family and friends. Luckily
Reno has a great accessible bus system that can take me shopping, to
doctors, or to visit friends. So I am able to utilize that for some things.

Just as I feel my daughter is my angel, so too is your wife and we are
beyond blessed to have them in our lives. Good luck.

Are you a member of the spinal cord peer support? They have a lot of people
on there who are caregivers for family, and I do think they have a special
caregiver for SCI facebook.

Getting excited about warm weather, from 43°for a high last Friday to
79°next Monday! I will take it. LOL

My wife works full-time. We have caregivers to provide activities of daily
living, and since she has good insurance through the state of Maryland, I've
been able to see a variety of doctors and nurses and so forth. But she has
been taking care of me at the expense of taking care of herself. And she
spends time nearly every day fighting with insurance companies and various
service providers while at work. The daily battles are taking their toll.

It seems to me that being a family caregiver can be very socially isolating.
Someone on this forum said, the majority of people they are friends with now
are people they met after the accident. The two of us can't go to many
social events (e.g. a 30th wedding anniversary party for good friends)
because most homes are not wheelchair accessible. Most social events have to
be here, and that needs cleaning up before, cooking, shopping, hosting, and
cleaning up afterwards. Regarding maid service, I think that could be very
helpful, especially around the holidays.

I was fine for 20+ years after my injury, no meds, pain was not great, but
could deal with it. But after a hip injury, I developed Heterotopic
Ossification (HO). When your bones try and heal they start growing calcium,
but when you have HO, the calcium does not stop growing. It grows like tree
branches into your muscles. Have to take meds and use radiation to stop the
growing. They will only cut it out if it grows so much you loose range of
motion. Because it grows into the muscle, it's a very bloody surgery, and that
is a main cause to restart the growing.

Without pain meds, my leg will not go straight. Spasms are so bad, I grunt,
almost pull myself out of my chair, and the worst thing is my chest gets so
heavy it's hard to breath. Like someone is sitting on my chest. If I miss my
meds, within hours my body is like 1 solid muscle clinch.

They almost OD me trying to raise Baclofen high enough to ease my spasms. Many
tests to find the cause. Finely took pain meds for my shoulder and it was like
life changing difference. Docs said no way would pain meds stop spasms, I need
more Baclofen. I went in and showed them, I'm not spasming. Then finely they
agreed it was pain causing the spasms. And they found the cause.

Everyone feels pain differently, has different causes. Both can have pain for
same issue, but one be in more pain. Not just let it get to them more. Just
can't quantify pain in different people. 5 quads can each have shoulder pain,
different causes, different location, different nerves. I would be hard pressed
to call a pain a 9 out of 10, because I can always think of something that
could hurt more. My shoulder makes me want to rock, but a hot needle in my eye
would be worse.

between my bottom and the mattress to try to keep me from touching the thing

I was assured it would be rotating my body a small amount to be able to
relieve pressure areas on my bottom but I cannot feel anything being shifted
and I have been told I could feel it moving me slightly if it was working
properly.

I am severely disappointed and need to figure out a solution posthaste
before I get another bed sore.

I would be able to purchase my own mattress if I only knew what would work.
Below is the brand and model I am using currently.

B.I.B.L.E.-BASIC INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE LEAVING EARTH

RE: Fwd: [QUAD-L] Getting Old

2017-04-06 Thread Joan Anglin
Since I haven’t gotten older without being a quad I have nothing to judge this
by. It’s been 26 ½ years for me, and I turned 78 on Tuesday. I have to agree
with you Jeffrey that I don’t know if what I am feeling is what everyone else
feels but I have learned to live with it. My head inching, sciatica burn, nose
running and no way to wipe it, cold at night-hot at night-cold at night!
Because I’m in a wheelchair I can still go as fast as I want to and not worry
about stumbling and breaking a hip. On the other hand I can’t really wear
hearing aids which I need, because I’m unable to adjust them even if I could
afford them. I have learned to say pardon me, I didn’t hear what you said in
many ways.

I was recently hospitalized for four days with blood clots and now I am on a
blood thinner as well as a new filter. I had had an embolism two weeks after
breaking my neck and they put a filter in, but I was never on blood thinners.
But evidently the filter finally clogged so hence the emergency room for the
first time in several years.

I am so thankful for modern technology, even though I curse it so often when it
does not do what I want it to do. I recently liberated myself from having to
depend on someone else to restart my computer when it decides to go on strike
by buying a large trackball that I can operate with my reading mouth stick.
Yeah for small things that make me more independent. Now if I can just design
something to push my pillow down to fluff it up at night!

But as we do choose to live so we learn to live with each of our burdens. I’ve
tried to remain positive, because there is no other way I can be a part of my
children and grandchildren and great grandchildren lives if I am not here.
Great discussion guys. Made me put on my thinking cap and be glad for what I
have.

I feel like I've been pretty blessed when I hear what you guys have been
through; what you are currently going through. I used to wonder a lot about
phantom pain. I didn't know if I was actually feeling what you're feeling and
I have learned long ago to somehow just ignore what was taking place or that
maybe I'm just not feeling what you are feeling. I am 38 years post injury and
I can stop at any moment in the day and think about what I'm feeling throughout
the paralyzed portion of my body. I can feel, at this moment, an intense
tingling in my left calf, it feels like bumblebees living throughout my left
leg, I've got this weird numb kind of hurt in my right leg, my gut and/or
abdomen is just uncomfortable, both my feet and toes feel weird at the moment,
with a somewhat intense tingling feeling. I could go on and on but I have no
idea if I learned long ago to just ignore this for the most part and deal with
life or if you guys are feeling something completely different. I've started
having this "restless legs" situation just over the past couple months. I
think it's actually been going on longer but it's gotten to the point where it
causes dysreflexia, so that's not good. But I've been having one of my
attendants exercise them some before she leaves and it helps. It didn't help
much last night but it's been helping. I've got the same itchy scalp problem.
In fact I've even got a couple small scabs on the back of my head where I
rubbed it raw at times I really try to resist but obviously I haven't tried
hard enough. I don't know, Dudes. Obviously, getting older affects everyone,
paralyzed or not. And I agree that those first number of years were much
easier in some ways and yet I went through a whole lot of learning the hard way
about some things that I know to avoid now. No one said it was going to be
easy, but you would think being paralyzed was enough and from there you could
at least not be in pain, deal with sores, just be relaxed instead of stressed
and not knowing which way to turn with what's going on with your body. Nope.
Just doesn't work that way. For those of us who choose to live after becoming
paralyzed, it's a hard road. But we must be getting something out of it to put
up with all this crap! Jeff

2017-03-23 Thread Joan Anglin
Can I ask for a Thunder from Down Under then? I have an Echo and yes it can do
blinds if you have electric blind opener, and all sorts of things with Insteon,
TP-link and other things, some of them just plain fun.

Here are a couple of ideas for a drinking tube and other accessibility ideas.
https://www.instructables.com/howto/drink+tube+for+wheelchair/

I have this, bought it several years ago when it didn’t cost so much.
https://www.drink-aide.com/

Or you could make it yourself for half the price.
https://www.grainger.com/category/ecatalog/N-1z0dtrh?analytics=altTerms

I have a hospital table with a hole drilled the size of my drink cup and place
it by the side of my bed and place the tube over my bed so that I can drink
whenever I want. We’ve replaced the cup a couple of times. I also have this
out during the day so that I can drive up and get a drink whenever. Have a
great day every one, Joan

I suggest a really hot woman who will do anything you ask.. If that can't be
managed…

I've heard on here that Amazon Echo can run Insteon products which can help you
with turning on/off by voice. Voice-activated software,, like Dragon
NaturallySpeaking – it's gone to some other name again – can help you
actually operate the computer by voice. The window and blinds might have to
be made electronic,, so I'm not sure the technical side of that part,, but if
they were and it simply took an infrared or radio signal, whichever it is that
Amazon uses, it would help.. I have a service dog. He can be trained to open
Blinds, an windows if it was all setup right.

If by "in upright position"you mean your wheelchair, I purchased a kitchen
table – there's only two of us – from a store that provides
furniture/equipment to restaurants,, and found a table at the right height for
sitting a large cup with a long straw (easily found online) aand driving under
part of the table until I could reach the straw.

RE: [QUAD-L] Raining

2017-02-20 Thread Joan Anglin
I usually love Reno weather, most winter days are sunny with the highs in the
forties to fifties. Not this year. Our average total rainfall is 6 inches, so
far from January 1 14 inches combined snow and rain! Mud city and erosion and
saturated ground. UGH. If I wanted rainy weather I would have stayed in
England. :-)

RE: [QUAD-L] Wheelchair backrest

2017-01-03 Thread Joan Anglin
I have used the deep contour for several years, there’s very little padding but
that has never been a problem for me. I really like the security that it gives
me.

I sit very erect so not much pressure on the lower lumbar area so I would
imagine it depends on your seating positioning.

I too am looking at permobile but I want front wheel drive, so hopefully the
F3. I would hate to go back to rear wheel drive.

Subject: [QUAD-L] Wheelchair backrest

I have a Permobil M 300 with the corpus seating. I like the plastic wedges that
you can put on both sides of the lower part of the backrest for better lumbar
support, they don't get in the way that the swing away lateral supports do.

After a few years, my lower back began to hurt, so I put in the dense foam
inserts for the lumbar region that came with it. The pain went away pretty
quickly, but it has caused a pressure sore.

I'm going to start the process for a new chair this summer. I asked the
wheelchair technician that ordered me the chair about different backrests that
are less likely to cause a pressure sore, he recommended a company called
Comfort Company that has air backrests. They look nice, the only problem is I
would probably have to go back to the swing away lateral supports.

Looking at the Jay 2, Deep Contour backrests, they look like they wrap around
the lower body pretty well. But nervous about the amount of foam in the lumbar
region. Has anybody tried one of these backrests? Is the thickness of the foam
adequate? Would greatly appreciate any advice.

I have a couple of serious issues that cry for quad wisdom. First, I went to
the dentist yesterday to have a crown replaced. Instead, he tells me that I
have three teeth (including the crown tooth) that need to be pulled. That
will be a total of nine teeth, none of them visible, that I have had
removed. Chewing anything crunchy, like baby carrots, is already a task. He
wants to put in implants, something that will cost a small fortune. Now, I
am almost 65, 45 years post. Common sense says I am nearing the end of my
rope. I am leaning toward doing nothing and removing each tooth as it
becomes a problem. The implants would also require repeated trips to
Louisville, a 200 mile round trip.
Secondly, my neck and shoulders have become unbearably painful. Have any of
you tried glucosamine chondroiten or anything similiar like CQ3?

The need to have it positioned directly in front would be a great

Looking on the web site of the Blueant it still says you have to tap the

to have to push the command bar? I'd be interested, always looking for
something as a backup for myself I know that the Blueant S4 is all voice

RE: [QUAD-L] please tell me what kind of cellular phone with you are able to use! Samsung galaxy 4

2016-11-10 Thread Joan Anglin
Because I use the Amazon Echo for voice control of my home environmental
systems, of which one of them Is Anymote to control my TV and it is not
compatible with Samsung 7, I am not thinking of changing. My daughter and
son in law both have Samsung 7 and do not like it as well as the 6. One
since my son in law dropped his in the hot tub and could not revive it, they
got the two for one that was being offered.

As for me, I am quite conservative about upgrading and as long as my phone
is working I see no reason to upgrade. If it ain't broke don't try and fix
it.

I am not able to push any type of buttons, use any kind of stylus unless it

to find a cell phone that will work for me. The Samsung galaxy 4 has worked
for me 95% of the time. Mind is close to three years old and I have had to
factory reset it twice recently. I can answer calls, make calls, use it the
entire day with the special extra capacity battery from Amazon, navigate,
ask for phone numbers from google, send and receive texts, but I cannot
scroll through information on the screen and there are times when it will
absolutely not understand who I want to call and I have to use their actual
phone number instead of their name. I use it with a CS 50 bluetooth/hearing
amplifier. When this one decides to give up the ghost I am going to buy
another galaxy S4. Good luck with your search. Just remember, voice
control is not and will probably not be as efficient as being able to use
your fingers. Outside noise, televisions, other people talking all impact
voice recognition.

I was considering getting a camera once. I had a bracket on my prior wheelchair
which was intended attach a tray. I figured I could rig up some sort of a way
to attach a camera, which I could aim by steering the wheelchair and by leaning
forward and backwards. And I found a device used trigger the shutter remotely,
and it looked like something which I could attach to my wrist splints and bite

That is one of the things I miss the most (photography). My husband was an avid
photographer and three of the best of the best digital cameras (first a Kodak
purchased in 1998, then an Olympus... both of which were big and bulky which
were okay for him and I can't hold a camera anyway). I finally got after him to
purchase a smaller sized digital camera and he finally purchased a Canon that
he was able to keep in his T. shirt pocket. It took/takes great videos as well.

Anyway, my point is that I can't hold I camera at all so I always have to have
someone take photos for me which doesn't happen anymore. My life has become one
big medical problem. Further, after purchasing my first Smart Phone when living
at my sister's... that takes just as good of pictures so family members took
pictures for me using that.

I would love to know how people with only the use of one arm and one wrist take
photos by themselves without some elaborate system. I need to be able to drive
my chair and be able to turn it (my chair and the camera) every which way to
take photos of anything when out and about by myself.

Good morning

It normally only wakes up to the command Alexa, however it sometimes will
wake up and state "I do not understand the question" or something similar.
Dogs barking do not affect it, and it does respond to everyone's voices,
including my six year old granddaughter who loves to ask Alexis silly
questions.

It does not do facebook nor google.

For those other echo owners, I would like to share a couple of things that
might be applicable. I purchased an device called Anymote Home, and after
many trials and tribulations with lots of help from the company (a big part
of the problem was that I have a Samsung galaxy S4 which has an unusual IR
blaster) I can now operate my top box and my TV by voice. Just in time for
the Olympics so I don't have to sit through all the commercials!!

I also read about an app called Iris that will e-mail a contact for you in
case of emergency. It is under the skills part of Alexa.

I wanted a holder for my Echo that would keep it away from the wall as is
recommended, and decided to go looking for a hurricane lamp type holder. We
found a wrought iron hanging LED hurricane lamp for $7.00 at Big Lots.
Removed a couple of screws, broke that glass and Alexa fits perfectly, then
I got a decorative plant hanger for $3.00 and it now hangs above my head
when I'm in bed so I don't have to raise my voice during the night.

Now I'm on the hunt for more things that it can do for me, although I do
enjoy the music, using it as a whole house system is what appeals to me.

I also use Alexa to set appointment dates in my calendar. It is very
convenient to be able to verbally put down my appointments and goings on.
However, she does not always understand me correctly. The other day I told
her to add an event to calendar, Advanced Insect Identification for master
gardeners. A couple of days later I am looking at my Google calendar and
see that she has written Advanced Anal Sex Identification For Master
Gardeners!!! Whoops. Hopefully no one else who shares my calendar is
wondering what I am getting up to in my old age.

Have a great day every one, I plan on it. Joan

RE: [QUAD-L] Cushion question

2016-07-31 Thread Joan Anglin
I think it's very important to remember that each of us is very different.
We ask for opinions, and many times a solution or partial solution is found
in the answers. However, because of our differences, sometimes it is not.

25 years ago I was bitten by a brown recluse spider. This was back before
the destructiveness of their bite was widely known. The poison spread and
tunneled throughout my right thigh and hip. It required extensive surgery,
and took almost a year before we were done. As a result I had to learn to
sit differently, which eventually led to a sore in my groin.

Over the years we tried everything, staying in bed, roho cushion, wound
vacuum, all ineffective in the long run. During eight years of that time I
was unable to get insurance because I did not qualify for Social Security
disability. After a particularly nasty flare up and six months in a sand
bed, a very kind and generous plastic surgeon who treated me for years and
charged me $25.00 a visit, said I had a couple of options.

Continue treating this and doing all the preventive staying in bed etc. etc.
which led to no life to speak of, or get up and start a life treating this
wound. I made the decision to just deal with it. 17 years later I still
have the wound, it has only flared up a couple of times but considering
where it is located it is understandable. I go to wound care once a month,
and we watch it like a hawk.

For me it was the right decision, at 77 I know that my skin is becoming more
fragile and I am glad for the years when I was able to fully live my life.
Luckily I have been fortunate in having no other pressure sores that have
ever developed into serious problems.

I am not advocating my solution for anyone else, but I'm just putting it
forth to point out that we are all different. Have a great day everyone,
and enjoy the warm weather.

Have someone check your bottom often. I used to have to go to the wound

I feel rather differently about living life as a quadriplegic. None of us is
able to know what other people do behind closed doors, nor do we know what
pain, suffering, and agony other people go through.

I have a friend who I feel has it much more difficult than I do. True, he
has use of all of his limbs, and he can walk with the help of a walker.
Because of an injury to his legs where they were totally crushed, he is in
constant pain which has not responded to any of the treatments. He is only 35,
was an agriculture teacher who was chosen as one of the state’s outstanding
teachers. He is no longer able to work, has four children who can’t understand
what happened to daddy. He tries so hard to keep involved in his children’s
lives, be a great husband to his wife, but in recent months has lost over 60
pounds, cannot sleep more than an hour at a time. He’s not a quadriplegic, but
I will take my life over his.

Would I choose to be a quadriplegic! Absolutely not. But im one, I hate many
aspects of this life, but I have chosen to make the best of it. I look up to
all of you who have been quad so many many years, Bobbie, Nan, Lori, and too
many others to name. My 25 years has also been a roller-coaster, but I will
choose to ride it as hard as I can rest of my life.

Sorry, I’ll get off my soapbox now. Joan

Got it, set it up, and it was a snap to do. Started my shopping list, set
up traffic information so that my daughter can find out what's going on
before leaving to work, synced it with Google calendar, tried it out with a
few jokes, listened to some music, my oldest daughter who helped me set it
up by pushing the button on top of the Echo-and that was all she had to
do-already started me up a to do list of things she wants me to do tomorrow!
And all of that only took about 45 minutes, just WOW :) :)

Very anxious to see how it works with Home Automation, I will get a couple
of plugs tomorrow, and my son bought me a router that will allow me to
interact with my X-10 built in plugs and switches. Maybe I can get open
sesame to work again, and be able to turn off my heater and fan when I want
to!

Very anxious to hear what others are doing,

I have. Also I have a van with a ezlock, I use to drive but not since I took
myself off the road in 2010.

About 5 years ago I went to 2 fire & rescue houses and showed them how to
manually release my ezlock system.

Actually, I called ahead and told them what I wanted to accomplish and they
gathered as many volunteers as possible.

When I got there I stayed locked in and said;

"Ok, you just responded to a emergency call and found me just as I am, locked
in and unresponsive."

"How are you going to get me out?"

They didn't know.

I showed them the manual release button on the ezlock.

Everyone who has a van and and ezlock system or another type of tie down system
should visit there local fire and rescue house.

and it uses X-10, which is obsolete but by using an application it seems to be
possible to use my X-10 which is built in and could perhaps save me quite a bit
of money in adaptive switches etc.. But thank you for the warning, and I will
probably not use it very much for music as I usually have my computer on which
uses speech recognition and does not like to share! :) I’m very excited.

I'm jealous! :-) I want one so bad I can taste it. However I am going to
use D-link switches and plugs as I like the price so much better. If you're
going to use it on a table lamp you can use any light bulb you want to use,
same thing for overhead lights that are controlled by a switch. Good luck,
but us know how it goes. Joan

I wish it were that easy for me, I cannot try out a new chair unless it’s
equipped with chin control or sip and puff and nobody in this area has such an
animal! But to be truthful, I really like my Omega Trac and am willing to pay
for the repairs to it if we cannot repair ourselves. I bought it over 10 years
ago from Ebay and it was in Hong Kong. I had it shipped to Texas and
electronics installed. Because I was not approved for disability and had to
wait until I turned 65 to get insurance I always bought my own chairs and had
to buy them used because I could not afford a new one. We bought two other
omega tracs for parts, and have managed to keep this going. Before the hour
meter broke I had 900 hours on the meter and that was four years ago. I have
looked at other wheelchairs, primarily Permobile but they do not allow me the
versatility and safety aspects of the omega trac. That’s saying that I will
probably stay with this chair until I die. J J I should probably get a chair
in case this one dies permanently, but me thinks I’ll cross that bridge when I
get to it. Good luck in finding a chair, and be sure to listen to all the
excellent advice the others on this forum have.

RE: [QUAD-L] New wound

2016-01-10 Thread Joan Anglin
Steve

I have been battling a wound in the groin area for nine years now, and have
just decided to live with it. Surgery was an option several years ago, but
because it is in an area that has so many nerves I could not find a surgeon
that wanted to take the risk. It will almost close up but then it opens up
again. I did do all of the proper things like six months in bed, LOL-that
wasn’t fun. The wound vacuum would not adher, so we finally just gave up and I
go into the wound clinic once a month just to be monitored and get supplies.
The older I get the more fragile my skin becomes. So I figure I will take it
to my grave. (not my grave as I donated my body to the university medical
school, so they will get to check it out) my wound does not get any better if I
stay of my chair, so I am fortunate that I can still stay in the chair for the
15 hours IM up. I’m much more comfortable in my chair than in bed.

My wound is only stage 2 at worst. I think wound VACs are used on wounds that
are at least stage 3 or worse. Even though my wound is only stage 2, it just
won't completely heal. I have discussed the possibility of surgery, i.e. skin
flap, to repair the affected area, but he thinks any risk of the surgery not
healing properly outweighs just living with the problem I have now.

It gets so old staying out of my chair for extended days at a time, but staying
in it long-term definitely makes matters worse.

recently switched me to a different type of bandage called Endoform dermal

wound. So far, it hasn't done much better. Keep in mind that this is in spite

I hate wearing my chest strap, so I rarely do unless going out by myself. I do
sometimes fall forward and get stuck, have to call for help so someone can come
and sit me back up. This morning I did it big tine.

I keep a small pillow on my lap, to set the phone, book, Kindle, snacks, on. Or
my dog to lay on. This morning I had a cinnamon roll on a paper towel on my
pillow. If messy, I often just lift the whole small pillow up. I just tried and
the pillow fell, hitting my joystick. It spun me around, hitting the recliner
chair, making me fall forward, smashing the joystick forward all the way. I
pushed the chair into the side table, knocking the table over, everything
crashing to the ground. Breaking Christmas ornaments. Pushing the sofa half way
across the room. Almost running over my dog. Luckily, I had just set my hot
chocolate down.

I fall forward now and then, but never crashing into everything that bad.

This just goes to show how different we all are, and not just injury level. I
do program every morning about 6:30 AM, and it usually takes 10 to 20 minutes.
Every evening I take Metamucil, Benefiber and Align pro biotic. I've been on
this regime for five years after consulting with a gastroenterologist and it
definitely works for me. He was absolutely awesome and worked with me very
closely until I got regulated quite well. You might want to see a
gastroenterologist and get some ideas from him or her. Good luck, my life is
so much easier than it was for the 20 years before. Joan

I have been using Olive Leaf for itching for a couple of years. I ran out last
month, and could not wait until I got my refill from Amazon. I do have
allergies and I’ve always used Benadryl, but because of recent studies about
Benadryl and Alzheimer’s my Dr. Suggested I not use it.It takes about three
weeks to get relief from the itching but it sure works well for me. Joan

Sounds very much like allergy. Try some Benadryl. If that doesn't help, try
Claritin, etc. Do you take Percocet? It sometimes causes itching. Good luck, my

My head use to itch so bad, lots of flakes. I used Crisco or Coconut oil, and
it helped lots. But lately my head itches so bad, no flakes, and nothing helps.
I'm up all night trying to scratch my scalp. Like bugs, but nothings there.
Dermatologist gave me samples of itch free shampoos, but said everything looks
fine. I do not think the cold weather is causing it. Never has before. My face
too, it's like I have loose hairs tickling my face.

Can allergies cause that? My left eye is watering bad for 3 days now. I flushed
it with Visine, and a saline wash, and nothing. The outside edge gets crusty,
goopy, and feels like I may have scratched it rubbing it so much.

Sounds like another doc check up, Greg

Hi, thanks.

I've been cold since 1982, unless I'm in the sun. I moved to Phoenix for that
reason. Though after hurting my hip about 15 years ago, I've been on strong
pain meds. Lyrica, 150mg 3x. 60mg MS-Contin, 3 times a day. 30mg instant
MS-Contin, as needed. My average body temp now is 96.5.

Though my body is falling apart now. I am just getting over UTI, Yeast,
Shingles, Infected Shingles, all at the same time. Still getting AD headaches
so next week I do a kidney and bladder CT scan, bladder scope, prostrate check.
Then in Jan I go to a rehab specialist, experienced with quads. I've been a bad
boy, It's been years since I've seen one and had any tests.

I've always had cold issues. I sit outside for hours when it's 110. Over that
and it gets to hot. The last few years if I sleep with my head lower than like
25 degrees, I shake uncontrollably cold. I would swear I'm freezing. But once I
put my head up, I feel better. No idea what's going on. I can get overheated
and still shake feeling cold, but put my head up and I warm up.

I also have a nerve issue in my left shoulder blade area. Thought is was a
sensitive mole, they cut it off. But it came back worse. Some days it's fine,
then for a week it feels like a knife is in my shoulder. Like stabbing pain,
yet a dead nerve going down my arm though my fingers. I've tried more pain
meds, lidocaine cream, patches, nothing helps. It hurts just resting there, but
lots worse when resting on the back of my chair or on my bed. I have to put egg
crate foam under part of my shoulder to keep it off the bed.

I'm hoping the rehab doc can find and fix something. Though I'm 51 (Wow, I
can't believe that) I feel I'm a 25 year old in a 100 year old body.

RE: [QUAD-L] Any menu ideas? here's mine.

2015-12-11 Thread Joan Anglin
We do a lot of cooking on the weekends. At least twice a month we will cook
bone in chicken and then strip the meat and freeze it in smaller packages.
We can quickly make chicken burritos, chicken sandwiches, chicken and
veggies stir fry when we don't have so much time. One of our favorite meals
for winter is baked potatoes with meat gravy. The baked potato can cook
while we are doing something else and we just thaw the hamburger gravy and
add cheese. We also cook a pound of bacon at a time, and will use that with
sour cream, cheese and mushrooms on a baked potato. Scrambled eggs, bacon
bits, leftover potato make a good quick breakfast burrito.

However, I must add that we cook for 3 to 4 people, not just me. For years
we had 8 to 10 people for dinner every night, so cooking for just a few is
much easier. I make a biweekly menu, which gives us some idea of what to
make even though we don't follow it day by day all the time. I also find
that soup starters make a very quick dinner. Tortilla soup starter, add
frozen meatballs, some noodles, and cheese with tortilla chips make a quick
satisfying soup meal.

Received 6 inches of snow overnight, it's absolutely beautiful. Looking
forward to a nice fire in a little bit, and a lazy day during some computer
work and then rewarding myself with some Kindle time. Hope everyone has a
great day. Joan

Frozen meatballs. I have found these to be a great addition to my freezer.
It is easy for aides to microwave them for a meatball sandwich or sub. You
can add them to spaghetti and other easy meals. I highly recommend that you
try a bag.

Do you have any easy and quick suggestions which can be easily prepared by
aides and caregivers?

It beats extremely fast and won't slow down like it should. It about kills her

I wasn't feeling great so I wanted IV fluids. At first my doc said yes, but
changed his mind. The hospital records said my urologist ordered the home IV
antibiotics, so my primary said he wouldn't, that the urologist needs to.
But I hadn't seen the urologist. Only made an appointment. He wouldn't
because he hadn't seen me. The hospital said they wont. They will set up
home IV meds, but not just fluids. So I ended up back in ER just for fluids.
Now the ER just called to see how I was doing. I say I feel about 80%
better, but still body very sore, spasms, etc. They say the cultures came
back and the IV meds are the wrong kind. They wanted me to get admitted
until home nursing got everything changed. I said no, I feel good enough to
wait until tomorrow. If not set up by then, I'll go in for an IV, but not
admitted.

All I know is next time I go in, I'm bringing a bunch of those heating pads
and an electric blanket. I was just freezing.

At least I feel lots better even if wron meds, Greg

As I have mentioned before, I have used a Slimwear woman’s body suit for 24
years. I have virtually no quad gut at the present time. It helps me to
breathe and a C4 quad I need all the help I can get. J When I was confined to
bed for five months I developed quite the quad gut and it took me several
months to work it down again. The body suit also helps me to sit upright which
takes an enormous strain off of my shoulders and neck. It works for me and for
$30.00 every couple of months it is well worth it. Try it, you might like it.
LOL

Needless to say I have no experience with a man’s needs. I did however do some
research (I love rabbits trails) and found some interesting information.

I completely understand. I absolutely hate urine! Especially when my
catheter leaks when I'm in my chair and I have to sit in it until my
caregiver comes to put me in bed.

Thank you for the kind words. But I am afraid that my wings are continuously
fighting against my horns. J I have come to a good place in my life. I feel
that I have been allowed so many extra years from what they told me in rehab,
that I had better take advantage of each and every day. That’s not to say that
I don’t have my times of utter frustration and wishing maybe I would not like
to wake up. The nights are the worst, and my mind seems to seize upon every
trial and magnify it way out of proportion. But common sense seems to take
over and reminds me I still have things I want to accomplish.

I love gardening, and although I cannot physically to garden myself, I loved
the planning and execution and the satisfaction of seeing a finished product.
I’ve been involved in a school project where we are teaching children how to
garden and take care of living things. This helps me keep my mind active and
hopefully still working properly for the next few years. The idea of being an
Alzheimer person scares me to death, but of course I would be a good one
because I can’t run away if they turn off my chair. LOL

And thank God for technology, I am able to communicate by texting, calling, and
of course on my computer which helps keeps my sanity. Have a great day every
one, this is the calm before the storm here in Reno. >From Sunday night on is
predicted 60 mile an hour winds and up to 8 inches of snow. Goodbye Indian
summer. Joan

My neighbor, Dawn, had 3 or 4 toes amputated because she has never worn shoes

She frequents the ER. Just 3 days ago she was there because she was backed up.

Her diet consists of pizza and hot dogs.

I've suggested to her yogurt and boost but she will not listen to anybody

She also has 2 open wounds on her legs. One under her thigh because the cushion
is to firm but she dose absolutely nothing to help herself. The other open
wound is on the side of her calf because her leg is pressing against the leg
rest. So she just put some combined on the foot rest but will not change her

She is hanging on by a thread.

And now her nursing agency cut her hours from 5 to 2 because of how she treats

Welcome Ron and Sharon

Great that you are already looking forward to conquering bumps in the road and.
Your I-pad has Seri installed and Sharon should be able to use that.
Depending on your computer, Seri is also installed on the Macintosh, and
Windows Speech Recognition is installed on android. There’s also Dragon that
you can purchase and run computers.

There are several environmental control units that work with speech
recognition, Si-care is the one that I use, Broadened Horizons is a good place
to start, Christopher Reeve foundation has many suggestions and some excellent
information.

I cannot help you out with exercise equipment as I am a C4 complete and I do
not have any movement below a shoulder shrug. What level is Sharon? Just ask
away and several on this quad list could possibly have answers.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the nice replies. I just felt that I had to do something
positive for this day. I have been so blessed in so many ways that I wrote
this in just a couple of minutes just to share with some of the best people
in the world, my fellow wheelers.

[QUAD-L] 25 years October 15

2015-10-14 Thread Joan Anglin
25 years, a quarter of the century, almost one third of my life. Where did
the time go from that moment when I fell off the scaffolding and tried to
move my arm and realized it did not respond? That was the start of my new
life, and although it is not always a home run, it certainly is not a
strikeout either.

So many people who have helped me, encouraged me, devised a little something
that made my life better, cuddled me when I needed it, scolded me when I
needed it, and just simply told me to buckle down and get on with life.
Thanks to each and every one and you know who you are. Family, friends,
therapists, doctors, and yes many strangers.

To every little kid (some of them not so little but just as curious) who
asked me why I was in a wheelchair, how did I drive my chair without my
hands or arms, who offered to help me, I say thank you and bless you that
you accepted me for the person I am, especially the young one who wanted to
race me and when I won told me to get out of my chair and he would drive it
and win! I love you all.

I appreciate all of the strangers who are so helpful and kind and open doors
for me without my asking, offer to carry my packages out to my car, ask me
if I would like a drink from my cup on my wheelchair, or would I like
something to eat while I am waiting for someone at the food court to pick up
our orders. I don't believe for a minute that the majority of people do not
want to help or look down upon me in the wheelchair. Conversely, I love the
smiles, the how are you doings, and the people who say- isn't it a great day
to be outdoors or shopping or whatever.

To the very few and far between people who say or imply something such as "
my you really know how to use the wheelchair" I try to smile and reply " you
do really well on your feet also" and make them laugh. They probably will
think twice the next time.

Being a total C4 quadriplegic was definitely not my game plan for my life,
but honestly things could have been worse and I am looking forward to what
the future holds. I have already outlived by 10 years what they told me at
rehab in 1990, so hopefully the rest will be a piece of cake! Thanks for
letting me celebrate 25 years.

Well said Don, I think you are right , I used to get panic attacks and many
times it can be related to the fear of dying or loss of control, like you said
try to find a way to control as much as possible then try to learn ways to calm
the mindlike you said Tv or etc., Myself I think praying helps me plus
trying to stay positive as much as one can. Dan H**

I think a large factor in panic attacks is related to loss of control (e.g.
inability to get up, turn, etc.) I've learned that if you can find ways of
controlling as many things in your environment -- especially while in bed -- it
greatly helps reduce panic/anxiety attacks. Examples: raising and lowering your
bed independently, ability to control room temperature or a fan, ability to
control tv/radio/lights and especially the ability to use the phone and
computer. All of these things are possible using today's technology. If you are
able to control things around you I believe you will feel less anxious.
However, I'm not a doctor and I don't even play one on TV.

I remember my first anxiety attack; it occurred one night while I was in the
acute care hospital after my diving accident. I was still in a halo-like device
and completely immobile. I began to feel the walls closing in on me and the
panic set in. Somehow, I managed to flip through the TV channels and,
mercifully, I found a movie that held my attention and calmed me down. To this
day that miracle film is still one of my all-time favorite movies -- it's not
that it's all that special cinematically, but it holds a special place in my
heart for calming my soul that dark night in 1982. The movie is: Jeremiah
Johnson.

The only other times I get these anxiety attacks is when I roll myself too far
at night and end up face-down in my bed, unable to roll back over. For one
thing it's hard to breathe, but secondly it puts me back in the memory of
floating face-down in the water when I had my diving accident. I was fully
conscious and floated face down, unable to move for what seemed like minutes,
although it may have been seconds. Very scary stuff, and I wouldn't wish that
kind of panic on anyone. Sometimes, when I hear news stories about an
earthquake where people are buried alive, I think about the people under that
rubble and how they must have that same feeling of horror being unable to move
and breathe. Nightmare inducing.

OK, now let's think of something more positive: if we still have trouble with
panic attacks, instead of relying on drugs we might want to check into hypnosis
or meditation techniques. I've thought about doing this many times, but
haven't. The power of the mind is amazing; if we can learn techniques to shut
off the negative thoughts we will be better able to avoid the worry, panic,
anxiety.

This morning I was driving to pick up a friend. As I pulled my Honda into her
parking lot the sun was just rising and I was driving east, looking straight
into the orange-yellow glow. My windshield was dusty so I hit the fluid button
and the wiper solvent sprayed onto my window. For a brief moment I witnessed a
tiny rainbow prism in the mist, against the morning sky, and then, as if by
magic, a hummingbird flew in view and hovered, for a second, right in front of
me. The beauty of that moment was so moving that I literally said thanks to
God. If I saw that scene in a movie I would say it was over-the-top hokey, but
it actually happened. The next time I'm panicking I'll try to recall that image
of the hummingbird in t
