I went down so damn quick that the only reaction I had was to block my knees from hitting me in the face after my head bounced off the floor. After that I had to get my right leg unstuck from between my armrest and backrest; I then had to get my chair out from under me. It became a matter of survival mode at this point; my phones were about fifteen feet away on my desk, I was home alone, it was 7:50 am and no one would be here until 2 in the afternoon. My first thought was to try and get to my phone; I realized that would be nearly impossible, so I was able to get my arm under our futon and get up on my elbows. After getting to my elbows I then worked my way to a window; I saw my neighbor come out of his garage, so I started pounding on the window and yelling, my neighbor looked around and went back into his garage. So I started thinking I need to look for something to pad my hips from the hard floor. Just as I am looking around I saw my neighbor again; I started pounding and yelling again, this time he heard me. He came over with his cell and called my nurse; she arrived, and they picked me up. And believe it or not I was down only about ten minutes! I was pretty dang lucky; no injuries or bruises, just some sore muscles today. NOW- when nobody is home; my cell will hang from the back of my chair! ~peace~ Tim c5-c6 http://whoopiekat.com/crockscrib/index.htm WhoopieKat.com

[QUAD-L] leg bag cleaners
hello, have any of you ever heard of a product called seabreeze for the purpose of cleaning out the leg/overnight bags? The ingredients listed on the bottle is phosphoric acid with emulsifiers. Any ideas or opinions on whether or not this works to get all the big bad bugs (bacteria) out? It's a really pretty blue color, but pretty colors aren't everything. The only thing I have managed to pull up online about phosphoric acid is that it works well for water deposits on tile. Lucinda C-4,5 complete July 31, '05 Mpls., MN

We also have a really good Renaissance fair. However, it is quite a distance from my home, and I do not have my own vehicle, so it's quite difficult for me to get there. In fact, impossible due to our public mobility transportation. Unless I have a friend who has a van set up for two wheelchairs. Best dam day of my life. 10 years later we got married. Below is our story of how we met. I was 26, 9 years post, when I went into a local biker dive bar, rolling distance from my parents house, to see a childhood sweetheart (Frankie) start his first night as a bar tender at Hoover's Tavern. Pete 31, a golf caddy at the time, (because he had just lost his job) was giving a fellow caddy a ride home when his friend Sam wanted to stop for a cold beer. Pete and Sam were already there when I rolled up to the bar next to Sam, I introduced myself and Sam bought me a beer. For the next few hours I spoke to Frankie and Sam not to Pete because Pete was terribly shy. It was decided that at the end of that week I would meet Sam Pete to go and play poker, something I had no idea of how to play but really wanted to learn. A few days after I had met them I got a bad UTI and needed to be hospitalized, when I was receiving an IV drip it dawned on me, ...darn I told those guys that I would meet them, oh well I guess I'm not going to make it. At the end of the week when I didn't show up Sam said to Pete She stood us up, I knew she wasn't coming Pete said to Sam No, I think something is wrong, she really wanted to meet us I'm concerned. The two sat and discussed their trip they had been planing to go to Florida to caddy for the winter. Pete told me that he started to look for me in different places I had mentioned when I was talking to Sam. He remembered I was taking class's at a local County College so he went there to see if he could find me to see if I was OK. After a week he decided to back to Hoover's Tavern to see my friend Frankie, he gave his phone number to him to give to me. In the mean time Pete and Sam were still caddying and Sam said to Pete Your still thinking about that girl Bobbie aren't you? Were not going to Florida are we? Pete said No, I have to find her. About two days later I ran into Frankie at a grocery store and he gave me Pete's phone number and said If this was Sam's number I wouldn't be giving it to you, but Pete is a good guy. Somebody has to look out for you I went home immediately to call this guy Pete to see what he wanted. This had never happened to me before. I never waited for men to ask me out, I would just ask them out myself. i called and Pete came on the phone, this was about 5:00 on a Monday and the conversation went something like this; Hi, this is Pete Hi Pete Frankie from Hoover's Tavern gave me your number, he said you wanted me to call you. What do you want? I was so excited I couldn't wait to find out why he wanted me to call. Well, I wanted to see if you would like to go out with me? When? I said. Well, how about Wednesday? Why not tonight at Smiles 8:00 OK? I figured why wait. Pete said OK. I went to Smile's right away to get something to eat and a drink and see some friends. It's a bar and a band is there after 9:00. At around 8:00 I got myself a table alone with my back facing the door because I realized 'i don't even remember what this guy Pete looks like because I was talking to Sam at night.' I figured Pete would see the power chair and know who I was'. A voice said to me Hi Bobbie, my name is Pete and he sat down. I fell right then and there for him, he was so handsome, Pete said he fell for me at Hoover's Taverner I was also shocked when Pete asked me to dance, slow and fast. We closed the place at 2:00am and Pete came the very next day to meet my parents who were very relieved to meet a kind, nice decent man instead of the sleaze balls I was usually bringing home. 10 years later we married in my parents back yard on October 3rd 1992 So, that's our story of how we met. Re: [QUAD-L] Mendelamine? Methananamine?
Hey Tod, I was under the impression that methanamine is a generic for mendelamine. I have an SP, and I take 1 g twice daily, along with 1 g twice daily of vitamin C. I also take Detrol LA once a day to combat any bladder spasms. Take care, Lucinda C4-5 complete Minneapolis, Minnesota --- On Mon, 7/14/08, Tod E. Santee [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: From: Tod E. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: quad-list@eskimo.com Date: Monday, July 14, 2008, 7:29 PM Hi John, Other Q's: I *was* taking methanamine that has the efects you mentioned (i.e. breaking down to formaldehyde in an acidfic environment). High protien, prunes and cranbery juce ar supposed to lower urine pH. Brand name was Hiprex. My uro-doc discontinued it due to the SP. Said th bladder needs to hold urine with a pH f 5.5 or less to work. The SP didn't allow enough urine to stay long enough to help. pH won't get low enough to turn methanamine to produce enough formaldehyde. But, Hey... I'd still check on it. Everyone's diifferent, and maybe mendelamine is too, right? Best! --Tod John S. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: If your SP is becoming difficult, you may want to use a ditropan an hour before trying it. Vinegar can be a growth medium to some bacteria. I'd have to own a really strong microscope before I used a flush substance that wasn't sterile. Vinegar is great, but it is not sterile. You can clean stuff with it around the house, but If you have a home care nurse, how much will you bet that she didn't just leave a child with a ragging infection. It only takes one infection to kill you. Ask your Urologist what would be the best thing to flush with and reduce the occurrence of stones while improving bladder health. I think y'all might do better sitting on some vibrating device while flushing, so it gets more sediment into solution and out. I'm all alone laughing. Do watch your pH levels and try mendelamine (sp). It is possible to take to much vitamin C, but it sure isn't easy to do. If you take Mendelamine and check the pH of your urine, so it stays acidic, it combines in your bladder and becomes a mild formaldahide. Acidic urine slows stone formation, also. You need a script for Mendelamine because people fail to watch their pH levels. Ultimately, we are decalcifying about like astronauts without the view.

We live in an accessible apartment, so the cabinets are lower and it's all clear under the cabinets. I just got this brand new four cup coffee pot because Pete doesn't drink coffee so he would never make me any. He has been taking care of me for over 20 years day and night 24/7 Before when I would get coffee, I would go out to Dunkin Donuts or Quick Check and it didn't matter to me if it was raining or snowing - I went. I had to stay in bed a week after the last time I tear was repaired when it took three weeks to get the part because of the pressure although it was not open. We are told that we are responsible for our own arrangements if our wheelchairs are not working. No one will cover repairs to keep a backup functioning.. The company I deal with is Apria. It seems like they have only one person to repair anything and getting parts is so slow. They claim they are looking for someone, they probably don't want to pay anyone and make us wait. It seems really unfair. We don't! have a lot of companies to choose from like able-bodied perso! ns do wi th cars. Does anyone else have this problem, when their wheelchair is down. It seems like things will get worse with the new policy of waiting till the wheelchair repair costs are as much as a new chair. We will be having repairs all the time and not at once, so we cannot get a new chair for a long time. The repair people told me that it doesn't matter whether you have insurance or Medicare that the insurance pretty much follows the same rules as Medicare . What does anybody know about that or is it make a difference on what kind of insurance you have I wish it was that easy and I hope that its still that easy. [QUAD-L] Off-topic -- not sure what to do
Hey everybody, I am in a bit of a pickle and I'm not sure how to handle the situation. Approximately 5 days after I was in my accident, my son's father filed for custody. The only thing I can remember is laying there, with a halo on, in a semi-drug-induced coma, thinking I didn't want my son to become a ward of the state. So of course I allowed my power of attorney to sign over papers. Now a little over a year and a half later I am in my own place and he is refusing to let my son stay here anymore than every other weekend citing that the parental roles are now reversed. My ex says that I should be caring for and supporting our son but if he is at home with me he would be caring for and supporting me due to my situation (can I remind you my son is 16). He had been getting up on his own for school since he was in 7th grade and there is a bus stop three blocks away. He is not involved in or expected to be involved in my cares when he is with me, I have PCA's for that. My ex also mentioned that he does not want another disruption to our sons routine (not that he didn't have to get used to one when I got in my accident). Prior to my accident my son and I were joined at the hip and has mentioned that he would like to stay here more than every other weekend. Being dependent on SSDI there's not a lot of money for an attorney. Oh, and did I mention my ex and I were in the middle of a child support battle when I got in my accident? He was hoping to get his payments reduced. Help, I've called legal aid and they don't even have room to put my name on a waiting list. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Re: [QUAD-L] Poll
Hi Naomi, I am a C4 C5 quadriplegic due to a motor vehicle accident in which my car rolled three times. I was a sober driver for a crazy expedition four of my friends and I were going on. It was midnight or thereabouts when I stopped by my work (second job) and three of my coworkers as well as a good friend of mine started talking about food. The subject of the waffle House chain restaurants came up, and literally spur of the moment we decided to jump in my car and drive to the nearest one. Well, I live in Minneapolis. Therefore the closest one was Kansas City. Somewhere outside of Mason city Iowa, my right rear tire blew out and I lost control of the steering which pulled me to the ditch which catapulted us into the spin. One of the passengers had to have his rotator cuff rebuilt the other three walked away with scratches. It's probably more information than what you're looking for and I think it's a lot funnier with the whole explanation. Truth be told, I'm still craving some cheesy grits from the waffle House (not to mention some of their cinnamon raisin toast with that apple butter, and maybe some covered smothered the list goes on hashbrowns). Re: [QUAD-L] How I became a quad
So, Danny and Ron, do you guys know each other? Funny thing is, had I not got into my accident, I was planning to move to St.. Louis when my son graduated from high school. Do you know a restaurant in University City (or is it University Loop?) Called something like penultimate Café? I am a huge baseball fan which is what brought me to St. Louis in the first place, and absolutely fell in love with the city. Re: [QUAD-L] For the poll people
Hi all, There is a fellow that lives here in Hopkins, Minnesota by the name of Jim Boen who wrote a short book called 55 years of Quadriplegia that sounds very similar to Walters story. You can google his name to access his book, and read it online. I had the honor of meeting him, and in a very short time discovered that man was very insightful. Journey well through life, Lucinda [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi all poll people, I had to share this true story with you. I can't believe how much time Walter spent in the hospital and rehab. Boy oh boy have times changed. Bobbie Excerpt from the book âFrom There to Hereâ No Limits Publication 2004 My Rides in Hearses Walter Kimes C 5,6 Age of SCI: 20 Date of SCI October 15, 1955 Sandy Lake Pennsylvania Having been told several times over the years by various doctors that I have survived being a high level traumatic quad as long as anyone east of the Mississippi River, I often wondered how and why that came to be. I am well aware that part of the answer is good luck, much more than good management, at least where my efforts were concerned. Back in 1955 when I became a C 5,6 quad in a car accident, very few people with broken necks survived beyond a few months or so. Due to the lack of precedent, medical care for quads was comparatively primitive and experimental. Three of us guys were riding in the front seat of a new, 1956 Ford Crown Victoria. I was twenty years old, and sitting in the middle âsuicideâ seat. All three of us were thrown out of the car when the doors were torn off and it turned over sideways and end over end several times. There were no seat belts in cars back then. We landed in a swampy area, and the car came down right side up on top of the driver where the red-hot dual exhausts burned him badly and fractured a few bones also. The third passenger suffered only a scratch on one ear. Shortly after my accident, I still vividly recall coming to, in no pain but unable to move anything below my neck. I heard the blood curdling of the carâs owner/driver and then saw this nifty-looking maroon 1940 Cadillac La Sale hearse pull up near by. In my area of rural Western Pennsylvania, there were no ambulances then. The local funeral director and his hearse served double duty as hearse as ambulance, as needed. I thought, âShit! I really did it this timeâ The small country hospital I was taken to at first had a difficult time trying to figure out what was the matter with me. After several hours, they sent me to a bigger hospital about fifty-five miles away in a 1953 Cadillac hearse that had a flat tire midway on the trip, at 3 a.m. My dad rode along in the hearse, and he held cigarettes for me as I drifted in and out of awareness. No oxygen or EMTs in the hearse to say âNo Smokingâ The next thing I recall was waking up about three weeks later, then drifting in and out of awareness for another week or two. I was like a piece of sandwich meat between two slices of bread. The bed was two canvas stretchers, with the bottom one having a hole in it for my backside, and the other one having two holes in it: one for my face and one for my privets. I was held in the place with three bed sheets wrapped around me. One around my face, one around my waist, and one around my ankles. In this contraption, I was turned every two house, 24 hours a day. It took three people to turn me each time. It was called a âstryker frame,â but I called it much worse â and quite often, too. Two holes were drilled in each side of my head, where ice-tongs were clamped and attached to about eighteen pounds of weights to immobilize my head and neck, even while turning me over. I also had a tracheotomy in my throat, IVs in my arms and a blankety-blank catheter to urinate. I must have been a gruesome sight to behold, with my shaved head and ice-tongs, iodine and bandages everywhere, and tubes galore. No one would let me see a mirror, despite my repeated requests and pleas, nor would anyone hold a cigarette for me. I went down from 165 down to 100 pounds in just several months, and was somehow aware that I looked and smelled like a mess. Daily enemas did not help my attitude one bit. I was a miserable, impatient, very scared and profane patient. I couldnât use my arms at all, so I had to be hand-fed â even though I found out later that I could, but I just didnât give a shit enough to even try. For the first year, I had private-duty, around-the-clock nurses, and I was rather hard on all of them. And on my very supportive family. At first, the doctors vaguely implied that I likely

Hey everyone, Oh Jessica I so agree with you! I currently live in Minnesota, transplanted from Georgia so I absolutely hate being cold. I was a huge freeze puppy before my accident; honestly I didn't think it could get worse. Boy, was I wrong! There's been talk about the stem cell surgery in China and Portugal with people wanting to get use of their hands back etc. etc., but it's been my hope (if I can ever afford to go) to be able to get rid of my abdominal Binder for blood pressure, stop taking lyrica for nerve pain, and to be able to get rid of the 57 some odd scarves and hats that I own, not to mention the 83 blankets that I own. All that stuff takes up a lot of room in my closet! Thanks so much you guys for all your suggestions; and I plan on doing some shopping at grandpa's garden as soon as I'm discharged from this place. Hi Gina, Yeah, my baseline is 90/50 and I also take midodrine to control it with a little bit of florinef. If you are able to raise your blood pressure with midodrine, does that help with raising your body temperature as well? That would be great! I'll just be midodrine happy the rest of my life! Hi Linda, I know the little bubble wrap water things are that you're talking about but unfortunately this facility does not have any here. I agree that John's explanation was a really good one; it put things in a little bit different perspective. I've heard from my acupuncturists that drinking ginger tea is really helpful to warm you from the inside out, but I've not had anybody pick some up for me yet. So I had my Dr write for an order thru PT to let me use one of these warmers, can't remember what they are called, that have a pad, looks like bubble wrap on one side has a little warmer the nurses fills up with water. Re: [QUAD-L] Environmental Control Units
Hi Dan, I live in Minneapolis, so my acute care was done at Hennepin County Medical Center, from there I went to Bethesda in St. Paul for more acute care due to having pneumonia and then to a nursing home for one month, then to Sister Kenny Rehab Institute, and now I'm at the Courage Center in Golden Valley where I've been for a year. I own a house in northeast Minneapolis that is currently on the market for sale because it is a two-story home that I'm unable to reconstruct from my needs (partly because it's a post-Victorian home with natural woodwork and hardwood floors as well as the Butler's pantry in the kitchen that I don't have the heart to tear apart). So, I have been here without any rehab for the last six months because my insurance is no longer able to authorize me for anymore in -- patient units. In the meanwhile I have been looking for a place to live while my house sells in order to purchase and rehab a new one. And there are unfortunately a couple of roadblocks to accomplishing that. One of them being my 16-year-old son who currently lives with his father, that will be living with me half time and his father half time. He goes to school inner-city, and as long as he does is able to go to the school that he really likes (and that I also really like for him), so therefore I have to live inner city in order for him to be able to bus to school since I don't have a van yet, nor does he have a drivers license. A couple other roadblocks have to do with public housing, section 8, 2 bedrooms, etc. etc. not to mention I have a couple of really cute cats that need to come live with me again. Oh boy, I realized I just gave you a really lengthy answer, sorry about that. Anyway, thanks. I hope to be back soon.Belle Dan Tessiatore [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Relax, you'll do fine.
