To those of you with Invacare tilt chairs. Does your tilt function reside in
your joystick or does it have an auxiliary button? Mine is an extra button
Velcroed to the side of the control box . It plugs in the tiny port on the back
of the box. I don’t much care for it at all. It is very much in the way.

I hear you, Bobbie! I love the food channels, you tube, and Pinterest recipes
and pics. If I could, I would be cooking something everyday! Yeah, sorta
strange, I know. But I learned to bake southern cornbread when I was 12, then
replaced hot bread with hot girls until I crashed at age 19. Now I find the
recipes and try to talk others into the cooking part!

[QUAD-L] Quad woes

2017-10-23 Thread Larry Willis
I think we all have a fear of the future. Our lives are so uncertain, having to
depend on others for every little thing. Sometimes I think it would be so much
easier just to end it. At age 65 and 46 years post I keep thinking I can’t last
much longer. But I keep on going. It gets harder everyday though,
pain, weakness, depression, loss of purpose. Add to that arthritis, mouth and
teeth problems, and stomach and bowel problems. The ones that have ripped me in
the last few years though — wife has developed heart failure, had to quit work.
This put our income in the poverty level just as medical bills have
skyrocketed. Most difficult to face — watching so many family and friends pass
away. At my age those people who have been my rock through the years are
passing away. Dad is gone and mom is 84. Countless others are gone as well.
I’ll stop here and wipe the tears. God bless you, my quad peeps.

Guys, I am dealing with something that makes me want to close my eyes and not
wake up. My dear wife Melissa is in the throes of serious heart failure. She is

bankruptcy. If you have any prayers to spare, throw them my way. Lori, I keep

Fwd: [QUAD-L] Re: Pressure wound advice

2017-05-18 Thread Larry Willis
Pressure sores on my butt have been an issue for years. I have used the wound
VAC more than once. The most difficult part for me was maintaining a tight
seal. The contours of the butt and the tailbone are not conducive to a tight
seal. The wound vac is very effective, though. So is good nutrition and heavy
doses of protein as someone has already said. God bless and good luck.

2017-05-11 Thread Larry Willis
I live in the great state of Kentucky. As of now I am still in the process of
transitioning from teachers retirement insurance to Medicare (because I turn 65
this month). It is more confusing than the matrix. I think there is a part for
each letter of the alphabet and a rider and a supplement for each letter. Now
add different levels to each rider and those in network and those out of
network. Figure the different levels of copay, check line 37 for your agi, and
call the assistance hotline. Scream loudly, hang up, and realize that there is
no way in hell that you can understand this, much less afford it. The words
GIVE UP are ringing in the background. Double the Paxil, doc. No wait...can't
afford it.

[QUAD-L] Back, pain, back!!!

2017-01-18 Thread Larry Willis
Ok guys, things are getting serious. My neck and right shoulder hurt so bad I
want to cry. It seems to start in the back of my neck and radiate into my right
shoulder joint. The only thing that helps is to stack some thick towels in
front of me and lay my arm on top of them. Does anyone have a better solution?
I've tried salves and lotions, Percocet and ibuprofen. Nothing. Btw,one year
ago this week, my wife MELISSA, had her harrowing experience with a pacemaker.
Prayers for her and a few miracles for all of us! Night peeps.

Fwd: [QUAD-L] New Chair

2016-12-28 Thread Larry Willis
I think the dealer settled with insurance for about $13,000 on my chair.
Fortunately, I owe nothing on it. This is because I met my maximum out of
pocket limit through a hospital stay back in September. I get so sick and tired
of this I would like to drive off a cliff. It seems there is a new ailment,
breakdown, ungodly expense, family issue, everyday. And the health issues are
NEVER small. They always life-threatening for both my wife and me. I am having
spasms in my legs and stomach right now so bad I struggle to write this. It
seems so damn pointless. Suffer today, suffer tomorrow, next week, next
month, next year, until theLordfinally has some mercy and releases me from this
misery. Ok, I'm done. God bless you guys for listening..and for
understanding. Larry

Question- Can extended use of ditropan (oxybutynin) lead to burning mouth

[QUAD-L] Tooth arm

2016-12-21 Thread Larry Willis
A million thanks to all of you for sharing your thoughts on my teeth and
shoulders. Lots of good ideas. I learned that at $5000 per tooth, implants are
out. Think I am going to take out one tooth at a time as necessary and try to
avoid infections. Thanks to all.

[QUAD-L] Tissues and issues

2016-12-20 Thread Larry Willis
I have a couple of serious issues that cry for quad wisdom. First, I went to
the dentist yesterday to have a crown replaced. Instead, he tells me that I
have three teeth (including the crown tooth) that need to be pulled. That will
be a total of nine teeth, none of them visible, that I have had removed.
Chewing anything crunchy, like baby carrots, is already a task. He wants to put
in implants, something that will cost a small fortune. Now, I am almost 65, 45
years post. Common sense says I am nearing the end of my rope. I am leaning
toward doing nothing and removing each tooth as it becomes a problem. The
implants would also require repeated trips to Louisville, a 200 mile round trip.
Secondly, my neck and shoulders have become unbearably painful. Have any of you
tried glucosamine chondroiten or anything similiar like CQ3?
I surely would appreciate some input on these things. I feel like I am sinking
in quicksand with no rope. Larry WILLIS

You are so right, Nicki. I have burn scars all over my hands. Immediately
apply neosporin and bandaid. If you don't, it will almost certainly become
infected and very ugly. At least that is my experience.Larry Willis

Just had a lazy afternoon sex with my wife... all oral, since that's what
works dependably...

so enjoy times like this… So why does it happen so infrequently, why do I
let my chronic aches and pains and hassles distract me from enjoying life?
I struggle so hard to get through the day sometimes, I don't leave any
energy for something that should be IMPORTANT

Anybody else in this boat?

Got the hospital bill today. This doesn't count the doctors etc.
$39,000. Criminal. More than most people around here make in a year.

I have two iPads that I have dropped countless times.both are still going
strong . Last fall I was given a surface pro 2, a very impressive machine. My
wife used it during a short hospital stay. Unfortunately, the pro took a slide
off the bed and went boom on the floor.
SCORE iPad 2, Surface pro 0. Yes, the pro shattered. iPads are still going

Fwd: [QUAD-L] QUAD-L] Camera?

2016-09-17 Thread Larry Willis
Some things irritate the heck out of me for their simple inanity. For example,
last night I had a craving for WalMarts deli for supper. Chicken, okra, corn,
potato salad, rollsall that good stuff! When I got there, I saw the whole
area was dark and the deli trays empty. One lonely lady was slicing cheese and
Bologna. She said the manager had made a mistake in scheduling! Yes, I was
highly irritated, but I strolled by the counter that held packaged meat and
cheese. The place looked like a bargain day table on Black Friday. And the
produce section looked even worse.
I went to check out. There were five counters open. People were at least six
deep on each one. The customer service section was overwhelmed.
I know this is a silly waste of words. But the incompetence was disgusting.
Think I will shop Krogér next time. Good night, Pards.

There is a classic novel by Aldous Huxley called Brave New World that predicted
this years ago. The movies were called feelies. You put your hands on the
sensors and put on your Vr specks and you became the character on screen
feeling and experiencing everything he did. A bit like The Matrix. Yes, the
possibilities were endless!

Fwd: [QUAD-L] Cushion question

2016-07-31 Thread Larry Willis
I know relieving all pressure is absolutely essential to healing a pressure
sore. But I simply refuse to stay in bed for six months. I know it sounds awful
negative, but I refuse to waste six months of life on a miserable bed stay.
I'll soon be 65, and will be 45 years post next Sunday, Aug 7. Like Joan, I
choose to roll the dice. Whatever the outcome, I'll live with it.or die
with it. Regardless, I'll face this world with my ass in the saddle. Larry

I have had a pressure sore on my bottom for over ten years now. It refuses
to heal. I got it during a hospital stay for an infection. I got a roho
shortly thereafter. It healed other sores but not this one. I thought I

Fwd: [QUAD-L] Just a question and a statement

2016-04-10 Thread Larry Willis
Lori, your post just leaves me speechless. My heart goes out to you.
Sometimes life, especially quad life, seems more than the human spirit can
handle. It may sound trite, but turn your heart toward God and hold fast to
His promise. Above all, don't despair. Please don't dwell on all the
negatives in your life. It will bring you down like a rock. Try to stay
positive. You are in my thoughts and prayers. God bless.

I have been lost without my beloved husband who was absolutely everything
for me. My primary caregiver [while hiring morning caregivers and teenagers
to clean for us], a computer software/hardware engineer who used to work
for NASA, a photographer, a genealogist, a mathematician and statistician,
pretty much my doctor without being able to write prescriptions for me
because he went to medical school and worked in the medical field for
several years before getting his degree in mathematics because of the time
he was going to medical school there was reversed discrimination going at
the time - colleges taking "persons of color" to meet their quota over
white/Caucasian Americans.

I had everything on June 10, 2012 and the next day, after a cardiac arrest
and unable to revive, I lost all of that and more. We shared our love for
Golden retrievers and we used to love to do things together both indoors
and out.

I was doing better when I was able to live with family until they wanted me
to "move on" and I have fallen apart since.

After moving back here is unaware my husband and I lived for 11 years and
whereby the weather and the accessibility is awesome but I had no idea
that, over the last couple years, primary care physicians are not taking
patients who are on pain medications and Medicare certified home health
agencies are being discriminatory when it comes to a quadriplegic if
they're only insurance is Medicare.

I began to have my symptoms of a UTI last Thursday and need to get a urine
specimen to be set out for culture and sensitivity. My husband used to
purchase the urinary test strips to, every once in a while, and just for
the hell of it and for curiosity get the results for my urobilinogen,
glucose, ketones, bilirubin, protein, nitrate, pH level, blood, specific
gravity and leukocytes.

He could read those test strips because he used to be a cheap slap
technician and did not for a living so I knew how long to wait for each and
every result for each of those things (less than 30 seconds however). He
could not do a culture and sensitivity because, obviously, we did not have
the laboratory with laboratory, the slides, the petri dishes and
everything else required.

After his passing, I began to have more non-systemic UTIs. This is probably
because different people begin to do my bowel regimen and even though they
were as clean as possible... I knew my husband would do a better job and
making sure I was clean down there. That was clear since I did not have any
non-systemic UTIs prior to his passing.

I now feel so alone whereby I feel that my family could have "shared the
care" but they wouldn't and I have so very little family left (2 much older
sisters and 2 nieces).

After moving to Arizona the first nurse who changed my catheter insulated
the balloon inside my urethra and I discovered this after she left and it
was left in my urethra for a good 45 minutes before she could get back and
I am suffering from the consequences of that even now. I have had
spontaneously urinary leaking around the catheter. My urologist (who is
familiar with there are neurogenic bladders) is at a loss as to what to do
except for to increase my oxybutynin (which she did do the maximum dose)
but it has not solved the problem completely.

She offered to increase the size of my catheter but there are pros and cons
to that. A bigger size Foley catheter will stretch my urethra even further.
Yeah, I know, I could go with a suprapubic catheter but I have never had
any problems before that nurse did that to me and since my urologist has
been in my bladder twice to remove stones (the last one was in late 2012)
she says my bladder looks like a bladder that has never had a catheter in
it - it looks like the bladder of an able-bodied person who has never had a
catheter so why her fix what is broken.

I will get rid of this nonsystemic UTI with whatever antibiotic she gives
me after the results and go from there because things were getting better
until my pain began.

This is the second nonsystemic UTI have had since moving here in the middle
of January. My nurse was scheduled this Tuesday for my catheter change and
I had my urologist order taking a urine specimen for culture and
sensitivity to treat whatever is causing me pain but now she wants to
change that to Thursday because of a mandatory agency meeting and I was
okay at the time she told me that on Friday but tha

Fwd: [QUAD-L] A free van

2016-04-07 Thread Larry Willis
I had a second van for many years. It came in handy many times when I had a
job and the main van broke down. I finally gave it away last year. You
might say we both retired. It was a 1979 e150 that I bought new in 79. I
had it completely restored in the 90's. It still ran smooth as a sewing
machine.

Simple. Either keep it, which is probally far fetched to keep 2 mobility
vans going and parked or sell it to a person who needs it. I sold one on
ebay and got good money or you can try your hand at craigslist, but without
a title its not much good..you need that.

Today they offered to give his van to me for free!
It's a full size 1999 Ford E 150 with very low mileage because he couldn't
drive, only his AIDS or family drove his van.
My question is what should and shouldn't I do in this situation?
I do want to look into donating the van.
The family can't find the title so their going to DMV to get the paper work.
Right now my van is in the shop till mid May until a new custom gas tank is
built in CA

I have a blue tail lizard that has lived on my front porch for two years. I
worry about the little fellow.
