Hi Paul,
I used to do my BP every other day. Been doing it everyday for the last 5 years
and I feel much better that way. If I ever skip a day now, I feel a lot of
discomfort, spasms and sweating. Maybe you should try going every day.

Good luck!

Magic Bullet by far the best over the 25 years I spent crapping for two
hours every other day. :)

Greg, I agree, but at the same time I would have hated to have a colostomy
when I was in my teens and twenties. Dating would have been more awkward.
Imagine those loud colostomy farts in class at school, lol. At least now,
in my forties, I can just laugh it off as "just a part of life". It's now
a good opportunity for some good jokes or just a loud follow-up clearing of
my throat to cover. Sex has modified some, I wrap an ace bandage around my
belly to prevent issues and use the same technique to go shirtless. (can't
bring myself to pull my pants over my belly)

But, overall, the convenience is life-changing. Read our other posts on
this.

although I've never tried anything else to compare it to.
Also, I use to do my ball program every other day but switched to 3 times a

This way it frees up my weekend and I know for Tuesday and Thursday that I'm
getting out of bed earlier on a non-bowel day, and schedule appointments or

For me, it hasn't given me any problems in doing it this way. You may or may

When do you do your bowel program? I mean time of day. How often? What things
do you use to help move your bowels like senecot, miralax, metamucil? Any
simple things like all bran cereals or activia yogurt.
I ask because I recently had to have abdominal surgery because of an ileus and
have to radically rethink how I manage my bowels. I had heard that quads can
develop a mega-colon because of reduced motility in the bowels. A normal
person's colon is 6 feet long. Mine is 12. Here's the thing - nobody seems to
know if that's abnormal. I guess the number of 30 year quads that have had
abdominal surgery is small. Anyway I used to do my bowel program
Monday,Wednesday Friday. I was taking metamucil twice a day and on bowel
program days I took a magic cleanse and 2 senecot. I ate bran cereals and
activia yogurt every day too.
What do you do?

I've been doing my BP the same for 42 years now. Every other night suppository
that after I turn for the night, then I get cleaned up before I turn back on my
back about 6-8 hours later. There is a cux there to "catch" everything.
I'm able to move about my upper body enough to "keep things moving" and when
I ride in my van or go for a walk and bounce around I notice that Leo helps
"keep things moving".
I eat brand cereal for breakfast and a snack size yogurt every so often.
Sometimes I take a stool softener when I need some extra help because I'm
taking morphine since 2010 and it seams to constipate me.
I consult my sister who is a dietitian. She suggests fruit in moderation.

[QUAD-L] Bowel Program...

2009-02-05 Thread wheelchair

Todd, you should have a managed bowel program. I can't recommend the best
for you as I don't know your personal medical history. I don't know your level
of function either. I do know what can happen to your body or anyone else's
body when they fail to have a "regular" bowel movement.
There are some purist and naturalist who feel that a person should have a
bowel movement after every dinner or 3 times a day. Consider your habits
before you became a C6. Your waste is toxic and you should have a bowel
movement,
once a day or every other day. I realize that you may need help or
assistance and I don't know how often assistance is available for you.

What bowel program gave you so much trouble before? What product did you
use before?
Duxolex?

Best Wishes

We all have different BP so we'll need a lil' more info on your BP. i.e. How
often is your BR? Mornings or nights? Do you take oral laxities or stool

With those out of the way...I have heard that the "magic bullet" is not so

I hope to hear more on your BP so you can find your answers...

2007-10-28 Thread John S.
Paul,
Off hand, I'd say increase your fibre intake. Citricel pills or whatevers
cheapest. Never under estimate a shot or two of prune juice a 8 or so hours
ahead of time. The Mirilax others are mentioning is cool.
It is actually polyethylene glycol. It is hydro-dynamic so it absorbs water and
carries it all the way to your bowel. This creates the proverbial, "smooth
move".
With some added fibre and mirilax you may not need 2 magic bullets.
Ohyea. If your taking anti biotics or narcotics, please take some acidophylus
and/or other probiotics

best of luck and wishes.

Mirilax works well for me. No cramps. I take three scoops in drinks the day
before and use a bisocodyl suppository about 15 minutes befor i get on my
commode. No hemmeroids, no real problems. Do not take a narcotic within 6 hours
of your planned BM. Drink lots of water. Eat some greens.
Mirilax is a must if you take narcotics.

Re: [QUAD-L] Bowel Program

2006-04-30 Thread Jkrocks

Hi Paul,

I'm Jim a C-5/6 incomplete 46-year-old male, going on six years post.
It took me 4.5 years to figure out my bowel program to where I very seldom have
accidents anymore.  I still do have some accidents at night but very seldom
during the day unless I eat hot spicy foods or take Citracel.  I do my
bowel program twice per day because I need to be lifted by an electric hoist and
do my bowel program while I'm hanging over a bucket and most days I will do
something be at gas or actual bowel movement.  I do not need suppositories
or digital stimulation just an occasional "tickle" with some toilet paper on my
rectum.

My suggestion to you would be to stop using products to make you go and see
what happens for a few days.  Hopefully, if you are anything like me, your
stools will start to firm up and then your ball movements will become more
consistent.  You might have to have your rectum "tickled" like I do to make
you go but that is a lot better than taking all these products that make you
inconsistent.  Just keep track of the last time you went so you do not end
up getting constipated.  If you do not go after 3-4 days then you might
want to try some digital stimulation or your suppositories.  My doctor had
me on all that stuff and my stools were always runny and I had no consistency on
when I go at all until I stopped taking everything and let my body do it
naturally.  If you have any more questions please feel free to ask.

Jim

I think someones lied 2 U. I and I can’t began 2 count the others I know that have a nurse from an agency 2 do bp. So you need 2 check with another healthcare provider.

Luke, No One can take better care of you like your own, period.
But life is an adventure just waiting to gobble ya up if you don't have a
plan A and a plan B. You will realize this if you so choose to relocate to a
college campus. You should plan on visiting the campus first and discuss your
worries with the Director of DisAbled Student Services.
As a new student you will be given a list of potential student aides that may
be pursuing a medical education and looking for hands on experience. Some
states will pay $7-!0 dollars per hour X 5 hours per day @ 7 days per week on
your daily requirements which include BP. After you join the campus you will
have an opportunity to meet with the student population that uses these services
and do interviews until you chose a person that you feel comfortable with.
You will then become their employer... while you are attending school. You
will have full authority to fire and hire another aide of your chosing. Remember
too that you are probably not the first quad on campus and that you can
request to meet with other quads before you transfer to the campus. The campus
quads will guide you accordingly.
Now, get ready for school and start your planning. You will have fun...
while you are getting an education and learning things about yourself that you
couldn't imagine you would do or learn. Best Wishes!

Luke...

Many colleges/universities provide PCAs to their disabled students living
in dorms on campus in exchange for room and board for the PCAs.  They
actually live in the same dorm and rotate "On call" duties to cover emergency
after hour needs.  This was even the case at the University of Kentucky
when I was there twenty-four years.  You may want to see what is available
attendant wise at colleges in your state.  Vocational Rehabilitation should
pay for some if not all of your attend care while you are in school if there are
a related expenses.

Another consideration is your type of bowel program.  If you are doing
digital stimulus at all, you will get resistance from virtually all of the
agency managed assistance.  I cannot tolerate digital stimulus (I get very
dysreflexic).  My bowel program consists of lying on my left side and
having a suppository inserted into the rectum.  Normally, I evacuate within
30-60 minutes, no longer than 2 hours.  I do this right before going to
sleep, so I generally sleep through the process.  I evacuate onto a blue
pad and it is usually not as messy as you might think.

The above process has worked well for me for 16 years.  Since it is
not an invasive procedure so to speak, agency hired PCAs may go along with this
type of bowel program.

Good luck in managing your future education and PCA needs.
