While I do agree with some of the negatives listed, I have done quite a few
things in my 24 years of being a quad that I would not have otherwise done.

* started support group for quads
* started support group for vent users
* started support group for people with transverse myelitis
* made a disability resources web site
* made a transverse myelitis web site, with information I found people
to translate to many languages, which led to international support groups that
didn't exist before
* personally raised more that $30,000 for charities
Ya, lot of down sides to (besides what has already been listed)
* being worried every time the power goes out that the ventilator might
stop working
* worried when the vent tube comes off that someone might not come fast
enough to fix it
* never being able to be left completely alone

Hi Meredith,

Life is getting more difficult for most people living in Greece including
Quads. We used to get an allowance for an electric wheelchair, for a very
basic wheelchair with no extras like tilting and that has now been cut in
half and is expected to be cut even more. We receive no aid to buy an
accessible van or for caregivers we have to pay for them out of our own
pockets. Of course living in Athens presents its own challenges as most
areas are not very accessible including almost all apartment buildings over
15 years old. Although I have to admit that there have been a lot of
improvements made especially since the 2004 Olympic Games.

Hi Meredith,
Life is getting more difficult for most people living in Greece including
Quads. We used to get an allowance for an electric wheelchair, for a very
basic wheelchair with no extras like tilting and that has now been cut in
half and is expected to be cut even more. We receive no aid to buy an
accessible van or for caregivers we have to pay for them out of our own
pockets.
Of course living in Athens presents its own challenges as most areas are not
very accessible including almost all apartment buildings over 15 years
old. Although I have to admit that there have been a lot of improvements made
especially since the 2004 Olympic Games.

[QUAD-L] quad-list medications

2009-04-08 Thread davis
Hi Kandy! Thanks for responding to my question. My husband is Social
Security exempt, so we don't qualify for any govt. programs. So far God
has provided each piece of equipment we have needed as the need arises.
Thanks for your suggestions, though.
My husband was also on lots of meds. I asked lots of questions -
what is this or that for does he really need it? Our pharmacist is
really helpful with this (at Walmart). We have weaned him off a lot of
meds over the past yr (most of which made him so sleepy he couldn't stay
awake.)
A friend used the wireless door bell and glued a popsicle stick on
top of the button. They fastened it on his wheelchair or put it next to
his head when he was in bed. All he had to do was turn his head to bump
it and call his wife. We use a baby moniter that plugs in where he is
I keep the receiver with me so I can hear what he is doing. The baby
moniter works well for us - mostly at night when everyone is sleeping.
The rest of the time there is usually someone nearby that can call me if
he needs something (there are 10 people in our home).
It has been about 2 months since we completely stopped formula
feedings, but we still use the peg tube for the gallon of water he needs
to drink each day to give him medicine. About 8 months after his
accident, the home health nurse stopped coming (she felt I didn't need
her anymore since I was doing all his nursing care by then). She had
been bringing the special soy formula that he needed. When I started
checking prices, Walmart was the cheapest at $400/month. I went home
told my husband he was going to start eating or starve, since we
couldn't afford his formula and food for our 8 children that still live
at home! It was the motivation we needed to work on teaching him to
swallow again. At first I used a little table top baby food grinder to
puree soft foods, then fed it to him. In Jan., we were able to go to
soft table foods and stop the formula completely. He is using his arms
more these days and still doesn't have an appetite, so he has lost some
weight. I take him over to the nursing home where his mom lives
(Alzheimer's - I am her legal guardian) and have the aides weigh him
every month or so to keep track of how he is doing. If he continues
losing weight, I'll have to get him to eat more. Learning to eat again
is a slow process takes patience. Keep trying! I'm not in any hurry
to have the peg tube removed since we still use it for water meds.
The nurse that helps me shower him once a week suggested I keep one case
of formula on hand in case he gets sick can't eat. Then I would have
the formula to give him maybe keep him out of the hospital. We'll be
praying for you all. Mom Of Many

willing to bet that the majority of the Quad-list posters do not realize
their postings are wide open, unlike some e-mail groups where only the

Well said.

On 2/26/08, Stacy Harim [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

The point of my post was that topic was becoming mundane to use your
words. I totally agree that there are many more things to discuss aside
from paralysis, but sometimes topics get beat to death. After days and so
many posts saying the same things, sometimes it turns into an arguement and
some hateful things are said. I understand there is a delte key, however I
don't always check my email every day. When I get busy, it can be almost a
week or more and I don't have the time or patience at that point to go
through all of the emails so I delete all of them at once only to find I
missed an important post after the fact. Then if I want to know what it
said, I have to go to the archives.

My whole point is that we are here to support eachother, not beat
eachother down. It's like people seem to think those who yell the loudest
is right sometimes. How about we express ourselves and response to what
someone else said is fine (to me), but I get frustrated to see the same
thing said over and over again and like I said before, hurtful things can be
said. Again, we are here to support eachother.

I don't expect everyone to reply to my posts, but it gets aggrivating to
see posts like that get so much more attn than real life issues that we have
to deal with. People should have kind words to offer even if they can't
help over hurtful words about topics like the one about the poor woman who
 passed away.

Sorry for my rambling, but my opinion stands about how I feel about the
list. Someone told me that he has seen many leave over chat like that and I
know of at least one myself that contributed quite a lot to the list
 sometime ago.

I hope you continue to find answers here. Unfortunately there are going
to be those threads which we don't like, but as someone said before, there
 is always the delete key.

Just because you don't get a number of responses to your queries, doesn't
mean it was a read by a multitude of people who really didn't feel the
ability to respond effectively to your question. I read every answer or
suggestion and it helped me out.

About three or four years ago I made a similar plea and someone, it may
have even been Tim (stuntman) who responded that we think about things other
than a quadriplegia all the time. Why not comment about them on this site?
The person felt it was mundane to consistently do nothing but talk about
quadriplegia and frankly I have to agree.

That is not to say that I don't agree with what you wrote. We should be
more consumed with those who won't come out and help those of us in need.

I hope this made some sort of sense. If not I apologize.

   Stacy,

I totally agree with you. There are more pressing issues that this
website could address that would be a great help to those of us who need
it. I went into the Transverse Myelitis website, but found that the quad
website is where I can get the most information for my needs. When I come
to this site I expect to find posts that would address my questions as a
quad, instead of a bunch of conversation about something that is of no
  use to any of us.

I am not saying that there should never be comments on current events or
news articles, but I would think that our comments would be something
beneficial for those of us who look toward this site for, what may be,
the only help we can find. Sometimes we get on a subject and just comment
on it until the comments are repetitions and of no use to anyone.

Please, I beg of you, be mindful of us who really need help dealing with
being a quadriplegic and answers to our issues at hand. Thanks in advance

Re: [QUAD-L] free list

2008-02-26 Thread Stacy Harim
The point of my post was that topic was becoming mundane to use your words. I
totally agree that there are many more things to discuss aside from paralysis,
but sometimes topics get beat to death. After days and so many posts saying
the same things, sometimes it turns into an arguement and some hateful things
are said. I understand there is a delte key, however I don't always check my
email every day. When I get busy, it can be almost a week or more and I don't
have the time or patience at that point to go through all of the emails so I
delete all of them at once only to find I missed an important post after the
fact. Then if I want to know what it said, I have to go to the archives.

My whole point is that we are here to support eachother, not beat eachother
down. It's like people seem to think those who yell the loudest is right
sometimes. How about we express ourselves and response to what someone else
said is fine (to me), but I get frustrated to see the same thing said over and
over again and like I said before, hurtful things can be said. Again, we are
here to support eachother.

I don't expect everyone to reply to my posts, but it gets aggrivating to see
posts like that get so much more attn than real life issues that we have to
deal with. People should have kind words to offer even if they can't help over
hurtful words about topics like the one about the poor woman who passed away.

Sorry for my rambling, but my opinion stands about how I feel about the list.
Someone told me that he has seen many leave over chat like that and I know of
at least one myself that contributed quite a lot to the list sometime ago.

Cant we all just get along?

2008-02-23 Thread Stacy Harim
Yes I realize it's a free list and so Sorry to charge another debate, but I do
find issue with a list that is more willing to respond and say hurtfull or
hateful things then to respond to those that are here for what the list was
made for. I constantly have seen people post things looking for help or support
about things that have happened to them or if they are looking for a new chair.
that includes myself. I posted about needing another surgery which is pretty
serious. Even Andrea posted about firemen putting her to bed when nursing
wouldn't come out to do it. There were about 3 responses to mine, a few to
Andrea's and tons talking and debating over the poor woman that passed away.

I think if someone is gonna get angry about something, it should be about the
nurses that wouldn't come out to help them. It's a helth issue for someone to
stay in their chair all night. What if their catheter bags get full then back
up into their kidneys, not to mention pressure sores from sitting in the chair
all night especially if they are wet. Who knows what else they may have needed
if no one came out to help them. If we want to get so emotionally charged over
something then it should be that. They are still living and couldn't nursing
to come out. That poor woman is gone and anything we say isn't going to change
anything. Maybe 911 should ask disabled people what the circumstances are to
why they need help then decide if they will come out. If it's something they
caused, then we'll make you wait or not come at all because you deserve it.
We'll just save help for those that didn't cause it because they are the one's
who deserve it. Is
that right? The woman should be resting in peace. I know she's in a better
place but she didn't deserve to go that way.

Aren't we here to support eachother?

Thank you Ron

Just because someone is interested in a particular subject doesn’t mean that
we have the right to tell them what to do. Those of us that use speech
recognition have it even easier JDon’t even have to move a muscle to delete!
Oh sorry, our mouth has a muscle, and so does our tongue, thank goodness
that our tongue muscle never tires. (learned that when I was fitted for a
tongue touch keypad back in the nineties)

It might take a minute or two extra to delete the files we don’t want to
read, and it is certainly made much easier if we maintain the subject matter
as we reply to things. IE starting a new subject line when we switch
subjects. I know I am guilty of that-but if we are not interested in a
subject just hit delete.

Have a great day tomorrow

Hello,

information provided. I truly appreciate the time people took to write to me
and will use all the information to help the man I'm working with. I'll try to
keep the list updated on my progress. With any luck, my client will be able to
join this list himself before too long!!

10 minutes LOL that was yesterday.Any way I forwarded that not discussed any thing on it. But your are wrong on one part people and I know quite a few that work with my wife even, that are legal Immigrants..well they all bring their older relatives here , mothers -fathers- and so on and they PAY THOSE THAT COME SOCIAL SECURITY--EVEN THO THEY NEVER PAID IN ONE RED CENT. Well I have a DAUGHTER who can't draw any for my GRANDSON because His DAD DIED OF CANCER AT AGE 21 --WE were told he died before he HAD PAID IN ENOUGH QUARTERS. SO he suffers in POVERTY while WE PAY FORIENERS WHO MIGRATE HERE { While SOCIAL SECURITY IS GOING BROKE. } This is a sad fact and democrats passed that law years back. as i said i know this ain't a POLITICAL SITE SO I"LL JUST DELETE THE WAR CRAP AND ETC{{{SORRY John post as you desire..}}}..but us GIMPS HAVE NO EFFECT ON POLICIES IN OUR LITTLE
ROOM HERE. It may be a surprise to many people but you don't have to be an american citizen to serve in the military or merchant marine, but you must pay taxes and social security and medicare. The whole bit about illegal aliens is being blown out of context by many cable

Re: [QUAD-L] quad-list

2005-06-25 Thread Jim Lubin

When I started this list 9 years ago it was my intent to
have a place where people could discuss topics that directly related to
living as a quad, because I could not find a list that did that. It was
during the 1996 election campaign and I was sick of reading the crap
praising Clinton on the mobility and scipn list. That's why I had
said that I did not want politics discussed on the quad-list.
I do not moderate this list. The only way to do that would be
have to approve each message prior to them being sent to the subscribers
list. That would be way to time consuming and I would just end the list
before doing that. People that have been here for awhile know that I have
removed people without warning before. I pay for the account with my own
money so it's my right. If someone doesn't like it they are welcome to
leave and start their own listgroup or message board. If some needs a way
of releasing their frustration, start a blog and people can go debate you
their. Most people join a group called quad-list to discuss
quad related topics, not to listen to some person's rants. Don't come to
a quad-list and say something like get well instead of being
content to be like you are.
So that's how I feel on this topic.

use that as a way out of releasing frustration. I guess I feel we
should be understanding of other people. Just my two cents. I
don't know how anybody else feels about this topic. Thank you for

Dianna I realize I am posting to the quad list, however some quads have more movements than others and a lot of them are not mute. John is mute due to all the damage the stroke caused. And he is just now starting to eat real food. He is still on a G tube. How many of you are mute and can't eat? Most SCI people can talk and eat. but they are still quads.
