I was just checking the time.
Is 3 pm AZ Time = 2 pm Pacific Time = 5 pm Eastern Time?

Fwd: [QUAD-L] cell phone holder

2019-11-30 Thread Dana Wray
I need something with A long Gooseneck I can reach with my stylus.I don’t
have a lot of dexterity to reach the one you were talking about. I asked
the dealer about it already. We all have such different levels.C4-5. Has
anyone ever used the program Dragon anywhere they have a monthly charge.
Thank you
Dana

I enjoyed the article that Ishmael shared.
Has anyone heard of the oracle by Jonathan Cahn. It is a fascinating book.
My caregiver ordered through Sid Roth.com
It was $49 and included six CDs. Information that were not fit in the book.
You can listen to a lot of YouTube Videos that Jonathan Cahn is in. It’s
hard for me to read a book so I enjoy the CDs and YouTube videos.
Thank you

Dana, this may be the one you have tried already, but I got an adapter
from Permobil that works with Ram X-grip. I can use it for a cell
phone, as well as a tablet. You can get the X-grip in several places,
but I believe the part that mounts to the wheelchair is only available
from Permobil.

I hate the act of getting up, I get so cold. I shake for about 30
minutes after.
But if you are that sweaty, somethings got to be causing it. I assume
you tried different positions.

When I start sweating, I have to call my helper to move my legs around.
I sleep with either a hat, earmuffs, headband, etc. Something over my
ears, and the blankets over my face. If I start sweating it gets way too
uncomfortable.

Fwd: [QUAD-L] I hate this most about being a quad

2017-10-23 Thread Larry Willis

I think we all have a fear of the future. Our lives are so uncertain, having to
depend on others for every little thing. Sometimes I think it would be so much
easier just to end it. At age 65 and 46 years post I keep thinking I can’t last
much longer. But I keep on going. It gets harder everyday though,
pain, weakness, depression, loss of purpose. Add to that arthritis, mouth and
teeth problems, and stomach and bowel problems. The ones that have ripped me in
the last few years though — wife has developed heart failure, had to quit work.
This put our income in the poverty level just as medical bills have
skyrocketed. Most difficult to face — watching so many family and friends pass
away. At my age those people who have been my rock through the years are
passing away. Dad is gone and mom is 84. Countless others are gone as well.
I’ll stop here and wipe the tears. God bless you, my quad peeps.

Anyway, about 4 days a week, about 1 pm, I can not stay awake. At least people
can wake me up. But I try and stay awake but I feel like I'm doped up. After an

I've stayed up all night, been super tired, but it still just seems different

Anyone else have this issue?

Fwd: [QUAD-L] Broken leg..

2017-09-21 Thread Bryce Willis
Well BJ, back in 93 I drove headlong into a tree in my van and shattered both
legs. Both had to be in casts for several months. My knees were shattered all
to pieces. A very ugly situation. I developed pressure sores everywhere the
cast touched me. Heels, ankles, sides of knees. It took many months to
recuperate. Make sure you cut a hole in the cast wherever it touches you.

Has anyone ever used this for bladder spasms? If so, thoughts?

Myrbetriq is a once daily pill that mellows bladder spasms but
doesn’t
affect acetylcholine; instead it quiets the bladder by
stimulating Beta 3
receptors in the bladders muscle cells and doesn’t cause
cognitive or
other severe side effects that often accompany anticholinergics.
It
received approval by the FDA for treating overactive bladder.

Thanks!

Fwd: [QUAD-L] New Chair

2017-08-15 Thread Bryce Willis
How about this. I got my new Invacare storm last November. About a month ago it
started messing up. When you turn the power off it won't come back on. You have
to disconnect the batteries. I think I described this earlier. Well the repair
guy came by a couple of weeks ago and determined that the problem was in the
joystick/control. I called them yesterday and they said they will not recognize
the warranty because the unit had apparently been wet. This thing has never
felt even a sprinkle! I have a strong desire to strike somebody with great
force. What a bunch of crooks and liars! Any suggestions? Invacare wants my
insurance to pay for it. Well of course they do. Bunch of greedy $);&:@!
Any words of wisdom out there?

Been trying 6 months to get a new chair. First few months was mis
communication. I was waiting for them to send me info, the rep thought he had
and was waiting for me. Then arguing over what type of chair they could order.
Now I get prescription to fix my old chair. They called and said they no longer
work with my insurance group. I asked about the new chair we were working on.
They said, Sorry, we didn't realize it was a different group name. So its
starting all over.

The name of the chair place I get from my insurance.1 star rated, very bad BBB
rating, 4 brands of chairs I've never heard of. I'm appealing to see if I can
buy out of network. Can take another 15 days. What hassles.

Mine was somewhat different-I tipped over backwards, legs flew over my head,
nothing I could do.

About an hour later one of my Foster guys came home and found me and wanted to
know if this was the new game-he's a little slow. LOL

He brought me a phone and I called my son and asked him where he was, of course
it was 25 miles away. He said OK, I will be there in a while. I then told him
I was upside down, and luckily he made it a very short while.

I kept changing my mind. Thought the heat was the worst, then the joystick jabbing my soulder, then the hard to breat thing. But I'd yell and it would change again. The shoulder is lasting the longest, still hurts. But the heat was the thing I thought was going to do me in.

2017-07-09 Thread Bryce Willis
Glenn, what a wonderful post! So much of it applies to me and my years of
Quadom. I am 65 and am on year 46 of quad life. I never dreamed of being a
teacher, nor getting married, having children, or even living this long. My
health is declining now at a pretty fast rate, but both of us have exceeded
expectation by a good number. And I too have many times visualized the big
truck encounter. I do believe now, Glenn, that we have reached the point of
adieu. We have lived the good life, and if the Lord is ready, so am I. But who
knows? We may have a long stretch remaining! Whatever the future holds, God
bless you my friend! We have both fought the good fight. We shall both rest
when the race is run. Larry Willis

I sold the posting last week for 31 years, mine is 51 on July 10.

A lot of water has gone over the dam sinc the day, I married and remain so
today, three stepchildren, nine grandchildren and one dog.

When one door was slammed shut, it seemed that God would open another. I
operated a successful electronics business for 30 years, acquired some rental
properties, built a second home in the mountains and life was good.

It was good. I crossed the threshold about two years ago and now I believe I
have traded quality for quantity. I probably will be facing surgery in the
future and I don't believe I could expect a good outcome.

I sometimes sit at a local Riverpark and think how easy it would be to roll
down the windows of the van and drive into the drink. No, that won't happen.
I've seen firsthand what suicide does to those left behind. My brother was a
police officer and on his first solo patrol watched his best friend's father
step out in front of the car an committed suicide. He could only watch it
happen and couldn't do anything about it. The thinking back then from the
police department, keep your mouth shut don't talk about it and it wil go away.
It went away, or more so he did.

I've had a good life and don't regret much. I used to always make the statement
if God would have only given me one good hand, how much farther I could've
gone. well, then I went to an event, sat with a fellow quad and his wife
needed to feed him. I promise God right there and then I would never make that
statement again.

Will I be here for 52, only God knows that. I do know that I made an influence
on many people's lives and God used me in ways I could never have dreamed.

Take care and hang in there, let's see about 52.

Fwd: [QUAD-L] Abdomen Pain

2017-06-03 Thread Lori Michaelson
A kidney stone would show up on a CT scan. In fact, bladder stones and
kidney stones can ONLY be found by performing a CT scan. Not even a KUB
(x-ray) will show bladder stones unfortunately.

I wrote to Greg privately I told him that I went for 4 1/2 years with
extreme abdominal pain and cramping and had every test under the sun only
to end up finding out that it was Posttraumatic Syringomyelia! The spine
can do so many things.

I just read Greg's post and he is having all the tests done accordingly
(applause applause) but we are also different and can have that ugly
"referred" pain that it could be absolutely anything.

My new urologist is not fond of using a prophylactic antibiotic after I
have my surgery (bladder neck closure) and then an SP catheter for obvious
reasons. I used to take, shortly after my injury in 1979/1980 by the time I
got home a daily Bactrim and took it for years. I can remember now how
long. Now I can only remember that I relied upon Cipro whenever I had a
bladder infection (not to be confused with a kidney infection) which always
worked for the first 20 years post injury.

After 2003, I began to have back to back UTIs that would cause fevers and
therefore they had gone systemic. So, for the first time in my life I went
to a urologist. First time I really needed to. Good thing I did. However,
she had had to have emergency surgery before I saw her so I really didn't
see her formally until 2005/2006 (25 years post injury). She found that I
had a pathogenic bacteria and she did a cystoscopy. I had a bladder full of
stones. She told me they were the biggest stones she ever saw (even though
she wasn't in practice many many years) yet, ironically, I wasn't having
pain for them. I would not have known about them if she had not done a
cystoscopy I remove them easily with a laser.

Since then, I have seen her twice and both times because of bladder stones.
For a female, bladder infections are easy to get because the vaginal area
is right there along with the rectum. So I was terribly lucky to only have
5 bladder infections the first 20 years post injury. Guess I got paid back.
But I didn't plan on getting my urethra damaged by a so-called medical
professional so I have to have surgery above and beyond getting an SP
catheter. I hope everything gets resolved after that which is just over a
little week away.

As Jeff and so many others have said however... beware of a lot of medical
professionals now or before now. There are plenty of good ones but there
are so very many now that want to take on more patients than they can
handle so you don't get the "one-on-one" patient care that you used to get.
It is better in small towns I have found but Caveat Emptor. :-)

PS -- I find a big difference between "abdominal pain" and, what I call
"bladder pain." Since I know now the difference between bladder pain and
abdominal pain/cramping I make sure that my urologist's staff understands
the difference. Bladder pain in is most definitely in the pelvic area where
the bladder sits and has been the only indicative sign ahead of a bladder
infection starting in 2001 if it is only symptomatic (has not gotten into
the bloodstream yet to cause a fever).

2017-05-18 Thread Larry Willis
Pressure sores on my butt have been an issue for years. I have used the wound
VAC more than once. The most difficult part for me was maintaining a tight
seal. The contours of the butt and the tailbone are not conducive to a tight
seal. The wound vac is very effective, though. So is good nutrition and heavy
doses of protein as someone has already said. God bless and good luck.

I live in the great state of Kentucky. As of now I am still in the process of
transitioning from teachers retirement insurance to Medicare (because I turn 65
this month). It is more confusing than the matrix. I think there is a part for
each letter of the alphabet and a rider and a supplement for each letter. Now
add different levels to each rider and those in network and those out of
network. Figure the different levels of copay, check line 37 for your agi, and
call the assistance hotline. Scream loudly, hang up, and realize that there is
no way in hell that you can understand this, much less afford it. The words
GIVE UP are ringing in the background. Double the Paxil, doc. No wait...can't
afford it.

Fwd: [QUAD-L] Amazon to hire 30,000 virtual customer service workers | Jesse Jones - KIRO TV

2017-04-09 Thread Bryce Willis
You are right Greg. Since the advent of chain stores, the wonderful old Main
Street shops have disappeared. The old country stores that used to dot the
landscape are also gone.I have such beautiful memories of those places.
Walmart, Target et.al. are just community killers. Now add Amazon to that list.
I must say, though, they saved our little community. We had a huge Fruit of the
Loom plant here that closed shop and moved to Central America in the late
'90's. They put over 4,000people out of work. Amazon stepped in and used their
old facilities to open a huge distribution center. They are still growing. Sure
wish I could have bought stock then. It was about $12 a share. Now it is in the
hundreds. Wow!

Amazon is great for us, but it put a lot of little guys out who can't compete
with prices. But I use them a lot. And with prime, free shipping on most thing.
Same day shipping on a lot. Just last week I needed a cord for something, had
it free shipping by dinner time. And free returns, pick at house. Great place
to do business with.

Greg, I was diagnosed with HO when I was first injured 36 yrs ago. It
caused me to be lopsided and over the yrs made my other hip and leg to become
jacked up causing me major pain in the last few years.  Didn't know back then

I was fine for 20+ years after my injury, no meds, pain was not great, but
could deal with it. But after a hip injury, I developed Heterotopic
Ossification (HO). When your  bones try and heal they start growing calcium,
but when you have HO, the calcium does not stop growing. It grows like tree
branches into your muscles. Have to take meds and use radiation to stop the
growing. They will only cut it out if it grows so much you loose range of
motion. Because it grows into the muscle, it's a very bloody surgery, and that
is a main cause to restart the growing. Without pain meds, my leg will not go
straight. Spasms are so bad, I grunt, almost pull myself out of my chair, and
the worst thing is my chest gets so heavy it's hard to breath. Like someone is
sitting on my chest. If I miss my meds, within hours my body is like 1 solid
muscle clinch. They almost OD me trying to raise Baclofen high enough to ease
my spasms. Many tests to find the cause. Finely took pain meds for my shoulder
and it was like life changing difference. Docs said no way would pain meds stop
spasms, I need more Baclofen. I went in and showed them, I'm not spasming. Then
finely they agreed it was pain causing the spasms. And they found the cause.
Everyone feels pain differently, has different causes. Both can have pain for
same issue, but one be in more pain. Not just let it get to them more. Just
can't quantify pain in different people. 5 quads can each have shoulder pain,
different causes, different location, different nerves. I would be hard pressed
to call a pain a 9 out of 10, because I can always think of something that
could hurt more. My shoulder makes me want to rock, but a hot needle in my eye
would be worse. Greg

RE: Fwd: [QUAD-L] Getting Old

2017-04-06 Thread Joan Anglin
Since I haven’t gotten older without being a quad I have nothing to judge this
by. It’s been 26 ½ years for me, and I turned 78 on Tuesday. I have to agree
with you Jeffrey that I don’t know if what I am feeling is what everyone else
feels but I have learned to live with it. My head inching, sciatica burn, nose
running and no way to wipe it, cold at night-hot at night-cold at night!
Because I’m in a wheelchair I can still go as fast as I want to and not worry
about stumbling and breaking a hip. On the other hand I can’t really wear
hearing aids which I need, because I’m unable to adjust them even if I could
afford them. I have learned to say pardon me, I didn’t hear what you said in
many ways.

I was recently hospitalized for four days with blood clots and now I am on a
blood thinner as well as a new filter. I had had an embolism two weeks after
breaking my neck and they put a filter in, but I was never on blood thinners.
But evidently the filter finally clogged so hence the emergency room for the
first time in several years.

I am so thankful for modern technology, even though I curse it so often when it
does not do what I want it to do. I recently liberated myself from having to
depend on someone else to restart my computer when it decides to go on strike
by buying a large trackball that I can operate with my reading mouth stick.
Yeah for small things that make me more independent. Now if I can just design
something to push my pillow down to fluff it up at night!

But as we do choose to live so we learn to live with each of our burdens. I’ve
tried to remain positive, because there is no other way I can be a part of my
children and grandchildren and great grandchildren lives if I am not here.
Great discussion guys. Made me put on my thinking cap and be glad for what I
have.

Pain is something personal. No one knows how bad another persons pain is unless
they have dealt with pain themselves and even still we all handle it different.
The true judge of pain is..can you sleep, do tasks without
stopping..basically real life changing pain stops normal daily living.
Every day at least a handful of times under my breath Im praying "god help me
deal with this", when it get really bad its "god take me out of here". I never
cried at all the first half of my injury, but there are times now that when Im
alone I break down for a couple minutes. That's real pain, when it stops you
like a brick. To do my handcycle now it takes multiple pain pills and I pay for
it for days. I could talk to a person 5 minutes and know if they have life
altering pain by these questions. Doctors use the same technique.

Re: Fwd: [QUAD-L] Getting Old

2017-04-06 Thread Jeffrey Gaede
I feel like I've been pretty blessed when I hear what you guys have been
through; what you are currently going through.  I used to wonder a lot about
phantom pain.  I didn't know if I was actually feeling what you're feeling and
I have learned long ago to somehow just ignore what was taking place or that
maybe I'm just not feeling what you are feeling.  I am 38 years post injury and
I can stop at any moment in the day and think about what I'm feeling throughout
the paralyzed portion of my body.  I can feel, at this moment, an intense
tingling in my left calf, it feels like bumblebees living throughout my left
leg, I've got this weird numb kind of hurt in my right leg, my gut and/or
abdomen is just uncomfortable, both my feet and toes feel weird at the moment,
with a somewhat intense tingling feeling.  I could go on and on but I have no
idea if I learned long ago to just ignore this for the most part and deal with
life or if you guys are feeling something completely different.  I've started
having this "restless legs" situation just over the past couple months.  I
think it's actually been going on longer but it's gotten to the point where it
causes dysreflexia, so that's not good.  But I've been having one of my
attendants exercise them some before she leaves and it helps.  It didn't help
much last night but it's been helping.  I've got the same itchy scalp problem.
In fact I've even got a couple small scabs on the back of my head where I
rubbed it raw at times.  I really try to resist but obviously I haven't tried
hard enough.  I don't know, Dudes.  Obviously, getting older affects everyone,
paralyzed or not.  And I agree that those first number of years were much
easier in some ways and yet I went through a whole lot of learning the hard way
about some things that I know to avoid now.  No one said it was going to be
easy, but you would think being paralyzed was enough and from there you could
at least not be in pain, deal with sores, just be relaxed instead of stressed
and not knowing which way to turn with what's going on with your body.  Nope.
Just doesn't work that way.  For those of us who choose to live after becoming
paralyzed, it's a hard road.  But we must be getting something out of it to put
up with all this crap!  Jeff

Same issue..I have wood floors and it happens most on a rug by the front door,
because I have to turn a bit to open it. I double back taped a rubber /
plastic, chair mat for office rug / chairs. A lot have spikes to they don't
move, but you can find big flat ones. If you don't mind a slight bump, a 1/8
sheet of plywood works too. You don't see it much.

The problem with Cipro and Levaquin are not a super bug, but blowing up your heart. etc.
Reading the numbers is scary. Joints, muscles, etc.
Sounds like you can use it fine many times, then bam it happens.

Re: Fwd: [QUAD-L] Cipro Warning

2017-02-10 Thread RONALD L PRACHT
I take cipro 1-2 times a year as a defense to a uti that presents as at least
some blood in the urine. Once every few years the first round of cipro isn't
enough and it gets stepped up to something stronger. These doctors have been
giving people antibiotics every time they have a discomfort, even if its viral
which anyone with any sense knows a virus has to run its course. The worry is a
super bug will come from to many antibiotics on the average whiner. I
personally don't believe anyone is going to have a problem taking antibiotics
in moderation. Sometimes doctors wont give them even when it makes sense to. In
those cases just go to the ER or the walk in places if its during the week. In
my opinion a quad that cant weigh a doctors advise probally wont live long.

spasms in my legs and stomach right now so bad I struggle to write this. It
seems so damn pointless. Suffer today, suffer tomorrow, next week, next
month, next year, until theLordfinally has some mercy and releases me from this
misery. Ok, I'm done. God bless you guys for listening..and for

I got a Dragonfly Red DAC. It's a USB stick that plugs into your
computer. You then plug your sound cable into it, and it makes the music
playing on your computer sound incredibly better.

* Chocolate (I couldn't live without it... LOL).

* Omaha Steaks gift that included 2 filet mignon steaks, chicken, and other
foods to make a meal with meat.

* Money.

* Gift cards.

* A super soft lap blanket or bed blanket very rich in colors with dogs all
over it since I love dogs.

* A full life-sized stuffed Golden retriever that looks SO real that every time
I go buy it and out of the corner of my eye and think it is my Golden

* Christmas ornaments

That's all I needed. Will pass along photos soon.
