My BP has been as low as 50's/30's; I take fludricortisone (0.1mgs I think) a day, and 5Mg's of midodrine 3 to 4 times a day. I bounce all over with my BP; it is so situational, for instance, if my volume is up (lots of fluids) my pressure isn't bad, low fluids=low pressure, during my bowel routine my pressure is up, hours after the program I am super low. Re: [QUAD-L] Dizzy?
I am so glad you guys are talking about this, because I have been having so many problems with my BP that I'm about ready to pull my hair out. That is of course if I was able to do so. I went in to see the doctor on the 19th of last month and I went through great pains to explain to her that I have woken up virtually every morning with a BP of at least 138/89 and more often than not I am 150/100 or higher. Sometimes when I do my breathing treatments the BP goes back down to the normal range. But regardless of where my BP is when I start the day, every time I get into the wheelchair it bottoms out. This is normal, even when my blood pressure is completely within its normal range, but it is such an enormous drop to go from 180/103 down to 80/64 within a matter of five or six minutes. Unfortunately she really had no clue as to what is causing the problem. I had the advantage of being able to feel my bladder and my bowels, so I know there were no problems there. My bladder was flowing freely and I had changed my catheter in a timely matter. The bowels had been emptied the night before, so there was no obstruction there. We checked my body over and found no indications of skin degradation. She consulted my last sonogram (performed in late January) and it was clear of any stones in the bladder. There was one small stone in the left kidney that is not obstructive. Then she looked at the renal scan I had performed in July and didn't see anything wrong with it. The only thing out of the ordinary that I have found is that my PCA comes in and empties the urine before she starts performing all of my daily rituals. When she's ready to get me up, she empties the bed back one more time and often I have about 1500 mL more than I actually consumed. My tele-nurse is quite concerned about the blood pressure, but right now I don't know what to do. This is definitely a new experience for me. Quadius PS I'm still trying to make sure this voice profile is a little more accurate than my last, so please bear with me on me voice recognition. :-) On Thu, Mar 4, 2010 at 10:07 AM, t crook onemofor...@yahoo.com wrote: My BP has been as low as 50's/30's; I take fludricortisone (0.1mgs I think) a day, and 5Mg's of midodrine 3 to 4 times a day. Is it possible you were having an autonomic dysreflexia situation? Sometimes my blood pressure drops really badly and it's usually caused by something wrong with somewhere I can't feel. Most of the time when I have autonomic dysreflexia my blood pressure rises, but every once in a while it drops... If your blood pressure is low that could be the cause, my doctor had put me on something for low blood pressure a long time ago I wish I remembered what it was, now I am off it and my blood pressure is 130/70 normally unless I'm in pain or something. The first three years of my chairbound existence was largely spent lying back in my wheelchair. My problem is especially acute when I stay down for an entire day and then get up and try to eat a heavy meal. It usually takes me an hour and a half to get my blood pressure up to a level where I can go into my office to work. I also find it extremely difficult to eat within an hour or so of getting up and then get into my Van to be driven around. Here are my suggestions: 1. Have someone take your blood pressure when this is transpiring to get a good idea how low it is actually going. 2. Start wearing an abdominal Binder if you are not already doing so. In doing so helps contract the diaphragm and increases the blood pressure, at least in my case. 3. If your BP is going to low, you might want to talk to your physician about having ephedrine on hand for really difficult times. 4. If it is at all possible, you need to eat lighter meals. Re: [QUAD-L] dizzy spells
I wish I could offer you advice, but I know you are already trying everything which I do to prevent the dizziness. My doctor prescribed ephedrine for me when I have to travel after I've eaten, but I don't like to take it very often. I had one spinal cord Dr. who told me to try sleeping at a 30° angle. I really can't remember exactly what the rationale was, but I believe it had something to do with getting your kidneys to operate more efficiently. Re: [QUAD-L] dizzy spells
Hi and welcome- I have been on the list since about '93, and have been a c5-c6 quad for 20 yrs. next month. My question is- what is your blood pressure running? I do (like many) suffer from orthostatic hypotension (upright position/ low blood pressure) due to paralysis. Due to my muscle loss in the lower extremities; I have been suffering from more low bp's over the last year or so. I have gone through a battery of tests to eliminate health related (other than SCI) possibilities. I had my adrenal glands tested and they were fine, my blood work was good. My doctor put me on Midodrine, and I am feeling like the energizer bunny. I have more energy, no episodes of vertigo or dizzy spells. Diet and digestion can play a role in your bp like Mark (I believe) mentioned. I have many posts to catch up on, I just really haven't had the energy and time to post. Here is a link to check out on orthostatic hypotension--- http://www.icord.org/scire/pdf/SCIRE_CH16.pdf Good Luck! Re: [QUAD-L] dizzy spells
I use to have this happen to me all the time. I went for lunch one day with my mother and on the way home I was having trouble with the color of traffic lights. ( The restraunt was only 3 miles away) and I was driving. I kept telling her I could make it. That put an end to eating out. I was told the same thing...blood rushing to digest the food. I wasn't eating well, no breakfast, no lunch and a small dinner. I forced myself to eat more and I don't have the problem anymore. At the time I was also on prozac. This was all several yrs ago, no longer on that drug. I really think I needed to eat properly because it doesn't happen anymore. I understand your concern as it worried me. If we went to dinner at family gatherings, I would have to be laid on a couch for about an hour. Dianna C6/7 **Get fantasy football with free live scoring. Blood pressure and diaphragm. Any internist that specializes in SCI will tell you that. Depending upon the positioning or your internal organs when sitting and that which is displaced after eating can almost predict your blood pressure dropping. Mark you can't believe how close to the truth you are. Eating is/can be very traumatic to the body, depending on what is eaten and the volume. The body system must stop what it is normally doing to begin the process of breaking down the foods eaten. Especially when fatty meats are involved. Re: [QUAD-L] dizzy spells
I have experienced the same problem, so I avoid large meals. Mark is right about the infection being too much for a system that is already impaired. It could also be an allergy you have developed. We all have essentially low blood pressure so it doesn't take a lot to cause us to black out, or go into a gray out. If anything acts as a histamine on us we will generally faint. If you began taking a new med, it may be the culprit, or your allergic to the dust coming from your AC. Your BP drops, heart races and down you go until your system can compensate. Sometimes all you need is an over the counter anti-histamine like benedril. Ask your doctor first, because I don't know squat about your medical history. I do keep sudo-fed on hand for when I feel like I'm going down. Eric, thanks for keeping me on my tippy toes. We are heading down to Effingham for the Van Nats which has been going on since Monday at the Altmont Fair Grounds. Re: [QUAD-L] Dizzy Miss Lizzy
I fight the battle of low blood pressure and dizziness all of the time. I have found that if I eat something and then get in my Van to be driven somewhere, my blood pressure drops drastically. Occasionally it takes me quite a while to be able to function, but at least now I can sit upright the majority of the day. For three years after my initial injury, I had to sit back in order to be able to talk to somebody without passing out. In my case, my abdominal Binder has a lot to do with how well my blood pressure stays in the normal range. I occasionally use ephedrine, but I don't like the racing heart that comes along with this medication. I only use it when I know that my schedule requires me to eat something prior to leaving my house. All of my problems are low blood pressure. I also have a deficit in potassium and sodium, but I try to monitor how much water I take in (I usually try to drink too much) and that helps some. Be careful with the Gatorade. I once used Gatorade to bring my potassium and sodium levels up, only to discover later that I packed on around 25 pounds. My face is never lost the weight, even though the rest of my body eventually did. If you need sodium, you might want to think about the Gatorade drink with no calories or possibly one of the other waters that have sodium in them.
