The purpose of the binder is to constrict the diaphragm and support the
lower torso. Before rising in the morning lift one arm straight up for about a
minute and it will/should elevate your blood pressure normally.

it is so situational, for instance, if my volume is up (lots of fluids) my

If I get hot my pressure is low and or dropping, cold wash cloth will snap me

I get a little dizzy every day for short bits of time. When I first sit up,
after bm, after eating, after I exert energy, etc. but it goes away after
awhile.. The last 2 days have been real bad for hours.  It happened again today

it was better and I’d start going again and Bang, it would hit again. I think I
spent 20 minutes reclined in the parking lot. I’d almost call home, but I’d

Re: [QUAD-L] Dizzy?

2010-03-04 Thread Quadius
I am so glad you guys are talking about this, because I have been having so
many problems with my BP that I'm about ready to pull my hair out. That is
of course if I was able to do so.

I went in to see the doctor on the 19th of last month and I went through
great pains to explain to her that I have woken up virtually every morning
with a BP of at least 138/89 and more often than not I am 150/100 or higher.
Sometimes when I do my breathing treatments the BP goes back down to the
normal range. But regardless of where my BP is when I start the day, every
time I get into the wheelchair it bottoms out. This is normal, even when my
blood pressure is completely within its normal range, but it is such an
enormous drop to go from 180/103 down to 80/64 within a matter of five or
six minutes.

Unfortunately she really had no clue as to what is causing the problem. I
had the advantage of being able to feel my bladder and my bowels, so I know
there were no problems there. My bladder was flowing freely and I had
changed my catheter in a timely matter. The bowels had been emptied the
night before, so there was no obstruction there. We checked my body over and
found no indications of skin degradation. She consulted my last sonogram
(performed in late January) and it was clear of any stones in the bladder.
There was one small stone in the left kidney that is not obstructive. Then
she looked at the renal scan I had performed in July and didn't see anything
wrong with it. The only thing out of the ordinary that I have found is that
my PCA comes in and empties the urine before she starts performing all of my
daily rituals. When she's ready to get me up, she empties the bed back one
more time and often I have about 1500 mL more than I actually consumed.

My tele-nurse is quite concerned about the blood pressure, but right now I
don't know what to do.

This is definitely a new experience for me.

Quadius

PS I'm still trying to make sure this voice profile is a little more
accurate than my last, so please bear with me on me voice recognition. :-)

Is it possible you were having an autonomic dysreflexia situation? Sometimes
my blood pressure drops really badly and it's usually caused by something
wrong with somewhere I can't feel. Most of the time when I have autonomic

If your blood pressure is low that could be the cause, my doctor had put me

Though my BP is always low, Maybe I should try a daily medication?

Thanks, Greg

I have experienced dizzy spells every time I've gotten into my chair. This has
been going on even one rehab 10 years ago. The doctors in rehab Baylor medical
center, Dallas, knew that I had a problem. The rehab experience was pretty
much ineffective. I have spent very little time in my wheelchair as a result
of this dizziness. I have no solution! Bill Ray

Hi Greg, my doctor has me take 1mg fludrocortisone for this--he wants me to
take one every day but I take them more on days I feel I need them,,,I take one
before every bowel routine or I get bad dizzy like you were talking about.

I had a real bad dizzy attack today. I was out front reading on my entrance
way on my house. It’s not big, just a nice cubby hole to block the wind and
reflect the sun/heat. It was about 75 out today, but I don’t think I was
overheating. At first I was just light headed so I reclined a bit. A neighbor
stopped by and I tried to sit up. Everything stated going black. My hearing
started fading out. I never went out, but it was close. It was bad for about 30
minutes, but was still not back to normal for hours. Once I was OK, I was just
tired for awhile. I keep thinking of getting a prescription for low blood
pressure medication to use on days like these. I often get slight cases like
this after my b-program I know this topic was going awhile back.

Anyone suggest a medication to use on bad days, not an every day med?

I also suffer from this malady and have so for the majority of the 13 years I
have spent in this chair.
The first three years of my chairbound existence was largely spent lying back
in my wheelchair.
My problem is especially acute when I stay down for an entire day and then get
up and try to eat a heavy meal. It usually takes me an hour and a half to get
my blood pressure up to a level where I can go into my office to work. I also
find it extremely difficult to eat within an hour or so of getting up and then
get into my Van to be driven around.
Here are my suggestions:
1. Have someone take your blood pressure when this is transpiring to get a
good idea how low it is actually going.
2. Start wearing an abdominal Binder if you are not already doing so. In
doing so helps contract the diaphragm and increases the blood pressure, at
least in my case.

3. If your BP is going to low, you might want to talk to your physician about
having ephedrine on hand for really difficult times.
4. If it is at all possible, you need to eat lighter meals. For me this is
impractical as I am alone most of the day and need to maintain my blood sugar,
but I try to factor in that I will usually have to sit back for anywhere from
30 minutes to one hour before getting on with my normal daily activities.
5. I also had a doctor suggests that I sleep with my head inclined at a 30°
angle. I haven't been able to do this too much, but when I do I have noticed I
am able to get going much quicker.
I hope this helps. Also make sure you take a look at all the other responses
as they additionally have a lot of experience dealing with issues like this.

I wish I could offer you advice, but I know you are already trying
everything which I do to prevent the dizziness. My doctor prescribed
ephedrine for me when I have to travel after I've eaten, but I don't like to
take it very often.

I had one spinal cord Dr. who told me to try sleeping at a 30° angle. I
really can't remember exactly what the rationale was, but I believe it had
something to do with getting your kidneys to operate more efficiently.

Re: [QUAD-L] dizzy spells

2008-07-17 Thread t crook
Hi and welcome-

I have been on the list since about '93, and have been a c5-c6 quad for 20 yrs.
next month.
My question is- what is your blood pressure running? I do (like many) suffer
from orthostatic hypotension (upright position/
low blood pressure) due to paralysis. Due to my muscle loss in the lower
extremities; I have been suffering from more low bp's over the last year or so.
I have gone through a battery of tests to eliminate health related (other than
SCI) possibilities. I had my adrenal glands tested and they were fine, my blood
work was good. My doctor put me on Midodrine, and I am feeling like the
energizer bunny. I have more energy, no episodes of vertigo or dizzy
spells. Diet and digestion can play a role in your bp like Mark (I believe)
mentioned.

I have many posts to catch up on, I just really haven't had the energy and time
to post.

Here is a link to check out on orthostatic hypotension---

Good Luck!

Re: [QUAD-L] dizzy spells

2008-07-17 Thread DiannaL767
I use to have this happen to me all the time. I went for lunch one day with
my mother and on the way home I was having trouble with the color of traffic
lights. ( The restraunt was only 3 miles away) and I was driving. I kept
telling her I could make it. That put an end to eating out. I was told the
same
thing...blood rushing to digest the food. I wasn't eating well, no breakfast,
no lunch and a small dinner. I forced myself to eat more and I don't have the
problem anymore. At the time I was also on prozac. This was all several yrs
ago, no longer on that drug. I really think I needed to eat properly because
it doesn't happen anymore. I understand your concern as it worried me. If we
went to dinner at family gatherings, I would have to be laid on a couch for
about an hour.

Blood pressure and diaphragm. Any internist that specializes in SCI will
tell you that.
Depending upon the positioning or your internal organs when sitting and that
which is displaced after eating can almost predict your blood pressure
dropping.

I've had this happen to me several times and my doc told me it was because
it takes so much energy to digest food and I guess your doc is right because
blood is energy.
It usually only happens when I have a uti or some other illness though.

Mark you can't believe how close to the truth you are. Eating is/can be
very traumatic to the body, depending on what is eaten and the volume. The
body
system must stop what it is normally doing to begin the process of breaking
down the foods eaten. Especially when fatty meats are involved. It happens
in the TAB world as well, depending on the health condition of each individual.

Re: [QUAD-L] dizzy spells

2008-07-16 Thread John S.
I have experienced the same problem, so I avoid large meals. Mark is right
about the infection being too much for a system that is already impaired. It
could also be an allergy you have developed.
We all have essentially low blood pressure so it doesn't take a lot to cause us
to black out, or go into a gray out. If anything acts as a histamine on us we
will generally faint. If you began taking a new med, it may be the culprit, or
your allergic to the dust coming from your AC.
Your BP drops, heart races and down you go until your system can compensate.
Sometimes all you need is an over the counter anti-histamine like benedril. Ask
your doctor first, because I don't know squat about your medical history. I do
keep sudo-fed on hand for when I feel like I'm going down.
Best Wishes,
john

Eric, thanks for keeping me on my tippy toes. We are heading down to
Effingham for the Van Nats which has been going on since Monday at the Altmont

Subject: [QUAD-L] dizzy spells

Hi,

I am new at this so I really don't know how this works, so here it goes. I
am a 49 yr. old C 3-4 quad. I can not move anything below my shoulders but
I am not on a vent. I am going on my 24th year. The past 2 to 2 1/2 years I
have been having dizzy spells to where if I don't tilt back in my w/c I
will pass completely out. It happens after I eat a meal. I have been to
different Dr.'s about this and the only thing they can tell me is that my
blood is
going into my digestion system. The only problem is it doesn't happen every
time I eat. Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this? I also have
scoliosis bad. My spine curves bad right in between my shoulders. Could
this
have anything to do with it? Any reply would be helpful.

Re: [QUAD-L] Dizzy Miss Lizzy

2007-05-12 Thread Quadius

I fight the battle of low blood pressure and dizziness all of the time. I
have found that if I eat something and then get in my Van to be driven
somewhere, my blood pressure drops drastically. Occasionally it takes me
quite a while to be able to function, but at least now I can sit upright the
majority of the day. For three years after my initial injury, I had to sit
back in order to be able to talk to somebody without passing out.

In my case, my abdominal Binder has a lot to do with how well my blood
pressure stays in the normal range. I occasionally use ephedrine, but I
don't like the racing heart that comes along with this medication. I only
use it when I know that my schedule requires me to eat something prior to
leaving my house. All of my problems are low blood pressure.

I also have a deficit in potassium and sodium, but I try to monitor how much
water I take in (I usually try to drink too much) and that helps some.
Be careful with the Gatorade. I once used Gatorade to bring my potassium
and sodium levels up, only to discover later that I packed on around 25
pounds. My face is never lost the weight, even though the rest of my body
eventually did.
If you need sodium, you might want to think about the Gatorade drink with no
calories or possibly one of the other waters that have sodium in them.

Anyone call you dizzy before you became a quad?

My mother use to tell me (when I was a kid) that I'd break my neck if
I kept doing my thing.

Words can be a curse ;^P
