Hi Carolyn,

Here is link to an article I wrote about shoulder replacement surgery, ( New
Mobility September 2015)
that includes interviews from several wheelchair users that have had it done.
Hope it helps.

RE: [QUAD-L] Surgery

2014-12-17 Thread nichole rohling
I tried hemorrhoid suppositories and they just made me bleed (I'm on blood
thinner) and did cream on the nights before bowel program. I put it off for
a long time (about 3.5 yrs from 1st signs of problems) but they got to be
grade 4 with prolapsing and I had to do something.

I had surgery on the 8th and still haven't pooped. Dr wanted me to hold off
on doing suppository and see if I would go on my own, I am taking miralax
along w/ my regular stool softener and Fibercon (he said if I don't go by
Friday we'll do milk of magnesia but I'm not even really bloated now,
passing a lot of gas. He said it's just letting my rear heal which he feels
is good unless I am uncomfortable or sick from it ). I had follow up
yesterday and I think I am doing great. I've only taken about 10 Norco and
some Tylenol 3 - today I didn't take anything until after my shower and was
in my chair. That was at 9 a.m. Three days after surgery I sat in my chair
11 hrs and really I am just tired. My surgeon is even doing a house call
Friday a.m. to check my rear because it was going to be a production to do
it at his office J

everything I read had me TERRIFIED but they were just so bad I thought it
couldn't be any worse and it isn't..had a few bouts w/ dysreflexia, just
sweating and elevated blood pressure, 1 in the hospital and that night I
came home, otherwise it's been a piece of cake. now by blood pressure is
lowweird...I may feel different when I do poop but we'll see.

What did you try before surgery that helped?
I had surgery, like 8 years ago and was even bragging about no hemmys
recently. Well, I had some hard stools and now they are back

Dr had me do bowel care 2 days after i had surgery. I about died due to
dysreflexia at hospital.

phenagran. I went to bed at 4 and it was a rough evening and night. I was
sick to my stomach and sweated my rear off all night. I really wanted to die
and should've called 911 to go back to the hospital. Should've stayed an
extra day. I rested all day Wednesday but was up in my chair all day
Thursday and Friday. Still taking pain meds but went 9 hours yesterday in
between doses.

The surgeon said not to do bowel program for at least a week...I feel like a
fat cow. Taking Miralax and praying I'll go when I'm on my shower chair.

On a lighter note and something only quads can appreciate..I've passed gas
w/out bending over or pushing on my rear..it was a joyful noise...lol

I guess there's no roadblocks anymore J now if I can just go to the

My surgery is scheduled for Sept. 11 @ 7am,
which means I have to be there at 5am! For those of you who know me, it must be important if I'm getting out of bed by 10am!!! I will take my great Ipod and jam away while they cut and stick me! haha     If you didn't know about it, it is a baclofen pump I'm having put in my left side below ribs. Only place it can go actually! The doctor laughed when he looked at my small frame...     This will reduce my involuntary spasms hopefully to zero! Which will give me a much smoother and calmer day and especially night. My girl Velevet is tired of getting a knee in the head!     I will be released from the hospital the same day, so no flowers to be sent there! As always call my cell, the house is forwarded to it now anyway! haha     Talk to you soon...

I just had a secondary closure done for the 2nd time.  I was out for
about 2 hours with a general anesthesia. I had a perileal abscess drained last
August and my 1st secondary closure performed in January.   It didn't
close and kept draining about 30-50 cc of fluid a day.  I've used up all my
granddaughter's old diapers soaking up the mess.  Now the last closure
appears to be re-opening as I'm draining again.  The doc said he will turn
me over to a wound care center here in town,  he's baffled.  The going
under and coming out was no problem - just drowsy for a day or two.  Good
luck.

Hey CtrlAltDel,

Good to hear your keeping well! Your reaction to me not getting into the
squad was exactly the same as what mum said.  I believe in everything
happening for a reason, it was just so strange what happened over my trials
though.  It didn't matter what way we turned to try and get around it so I
could get there everyway led us to a stubbon no, I was upset then, but now I'm
so pleased!!  As for the tubes, there's more chance of someone having a
complete sci getting a complete recovery without any help whatsoever then having
the tubes made into wheelchair accessiable stations think I'm joking?!
The UK is useless when it comes to anything like this though.  The police
came up with a classic comment the day after the bombings, it was on the lines
of "we are sure that suicide bombers were the ones who set of all the bombs, our
priority now is to try and track where they are currently in the
country"...  if it's suicide bombers then maybe start to look at
the crime scenes?!?!?!

Need I say anymore?!

It was a bit of a reality check for us here too, and that's putting it
mildly especially when they treied doing it again 2 weeks later! I can
understand what you mean, as it was the same when 9/11 took place.  It's
only when you know someone who's affected or potentially affected that it truely
hits home.

So many people here do nothing but slag of Londoners, but the bombers
allowed us to prove that actually the majority of Londoners are caring and
considerate people.  I've always been proud to say I'm a Londoner, now I
feel honoured to say that it was fellow Londoners who helped each other out and
showed nothing but courageous acts and emmense support to the injuried when
tragedy struck our capital.  It's to those people and the victims who got
caught up in it all that I have the upmost respect for

Re: [QUAD-L] Surgery date

2004-09-25 Thread Dana Miller
I do not know why I was in ICU, never found out. There were drain tubes,
the supra pubic was used while the bladder healed, I also could not eat
until my intestines got back on track--they had to be completely
emptied--hope you like "go-litely!" Then the main line was because my veins
were shot. So antibiotics, pain med and such were put in thru there. I also
had an 'ng' tube to keep my stomach empty.

Oh I do remember they had me under a heat lamp in the ICU. I heard a male
nurse say, "who's putting cold blood into a cold patient"? So my
temperature must have been a problem. Once I got into the regular room, I
felt fine. I had problems with the sp blocking up with junk, and the docs
did not believe me when I said I could tell I needed to pee. The sp would
clog up and then I would leak from my regular place. Finally it happened
when a couple of docs were in there and I told them I was leaking and they
were very surprized to find it true.
The docs are a lot better now and the nurses have come a long way too. My
surgery was back in 1987 (?) I imagine things are done differently now. I
will be interested to hear how its done today. Also, my 'stoma' (hole) is
to the right of my belly button and down a bit. I'm glad its there, its
easier for me to reach as my right arm does not have the function my left
one does. I'm a C-6 on my left and a C-5 on my right.
take care,

Dana and ?
