Two things, Symantec stopped supporting anything that was useful {Symantec
AntiVirus is NOT useful} or what they had that was useful won't work anymore.
:-}

The good news is that there is something that I know has a OS X version, and
it is shareware, check out Default Folder by St. Clair Software.

I think OS 7.5.5 supports OpenTransport, if so you should use that and I
would use a router to connect to the cable modem or DSL.

I have my Quadra 610 connected this way and it works with no problems, and my
PowerBook 3400c had problems when connected directly, but it works just fine
through the router.

The drive I was using is the one for my PowerBook 3400c and I think it is
clean, I did read a lot of other floppies with it recently with no problem.
As to why I am using the PowerBook 3400c that is because it is the only Mac
that I have with a working floppy.

I have a Quadra 610 with a missing floppy and a G3 with a bad floppy and a G4
with no floppy.

I wanted to try to install Excel 4.0 because, A. I have it and B. I was
thinking it will work with my Quadra 610.

My own List is dominated by Ambrosia Games and all shareware except for
SimCity 2000.

Escape Velocity [Ambrosia Game]
Escape Velocity Override [Ambrosia Game]
Realmz [great RPG]
Swoop [Ambrosia Game]
Spades Deluxe [cards]
Aperion [Ambrosia Game]
SimCity 2000
David's Backgammon
Sim Cinema Deluxe
Interstellar Mac Cribbage [cards]
Columns Max [arcade game like Tetris]
Jewelbox [arcade game like Tetris]

On my G3 I like Escape Velocity Nova, Realmz, Sims, & Unreal Tournament the
best. :-}

Alberto Ricci did SoundEffects as a shareware version
 and then he did the commercial
version SoundMaker [which I don't know if it is to be found anywhere except
that I have it], these programs do record AIFF well and also one can do a lot
of processing on the sounds.

Soundmagic FX  works with the
above two as plugins.

I know that LinuxPPC will not run a 68k Mac. :-}

Ok Thanks! That will teach me to look in the System File first heh. :-}

I am not that familiaar with OS 8.6 and didn't realize that there was a
Dvorak layout included in 8.6. Soon I am going to go to 9.1 or so but for the
moment I am using OS 8.6 on my beige G3 and I use 7.6.1 on my Quadra 610 and
7.5.5 on my two Centris Macs.

I just got an ADB Dvorak keyboard and I am going to learn how to type on it.

I mostly use iCAB as I find that it usually works the best with most of the

My Mac that I use for email is a G3, so I could get Eudora 6 I suppose if I
really wanted it, but I think my Eudora 4.3.2 works fine and I have good set
of SPAM filters that do the job nicely.

The advantage with SPAM filtering at the server level is that you don't see
the SPAM, and the disadvantage with the SPAM filtering at the server level is
that you don't see the email that is considered to be SPAM.

Instead of running Linux, I would run BSDUnix or NetBSD and the Quadra 610s
that I know of have the full 68040 chips in them. It is the Centris 610 that
came before that has the 68LC040.

The Quadra 610 runs the 68k Mac software well and there is still a lot of
software out there that runs with a 68k Mac.

Also yeah one is better off buying one of the older PPC Macs than trying to
find a PPC upgrade card for one the Quadras.

Check the Swap list for parts, older Macs and older software.

Eudora Pro 4.1 works with a Quadra 610 [68k], and Word 5a is probably better
than Word 6.

PageMaker 6, OminPage Pro 7.0, BBEdit 5.1.1, Tex-Edit Plus, EZNote, FileMaker
Pro 4, AppleWorks 5, MacWrite Pro. I have other software that is not common.
Let me know what you want it to do. :-}

Otherwise for instant messaging on older Macs the only solution seems to be
to use AOL Instant Messenger, I have AIM [an older version] installed on my
Quadra 610 and it works just fine.

I used to use ICQ 1.7.2 and then Gerry's ICQ, but the problem was that I

Windows emulators exist for the 68040 Macs if you can find one that is.

Maybe you could run it on a a 68040 with BSD Unix as the operating system?

I do know that older Macs with 68040 can use BSD Unix just fine.

You want AIM 2.01.617, it works fine on my Quadra 610.

Looks for that version, if you can't find it let me know off list and I can
send it to you.

Thanks I went there and yeah it has old games from what I can see, but that
is good as I downloaded several.

So anyone have some documentation on the Might and Magic II and Might and
Might and Magic III games? How about Curse of the Azure Bonds and Pools of
Darkness?

the key stroke loggers that do exist have a provision to exclude passwords
for one thing and those key stoke loggers don't send the info that they
collect any where any way, they are just so that you can recover info lost in
case you didn't save it properly.

I don't think PPC Macs have any spywhere either, you might want to watch for
HTML mail with web bugs though. :-}

the point is that a long URL will wrap for some people not matter how you
send it and also there is a rule that says that a URL like
  should have < and > at each end. It is
the proper way to do it. Just because you haven't heard of problems doesn't
mean that there weren't any.
When the URL is long like some of the ones that span two or three lines it
really makes a difference. At least if there are problems in spite of the
fact that you followed the protocol it isn't your fault then. Otherwise it is
your fault as you aren't following the protocol.

Would this known problem affect me in trying to connect my Beige desktop G3

This is a little late, but GraphicConverter has option to save as a
Progressive JPEG, the only thing is some PC people can't read this kind of
JPEG file even if you have named it something like mypic.jpg :-}

I know this because my girl friendf uses a PC and that is how I found out
about that she couldn't view a JPEG in the Progressive format.

The Solution is to do a Save As and make sure that you uncheck Progressive
checkbox, you should find it in the Prefs or in the Save Dialog there is a
Options button that you can click. Then send it again making sure that you
have .jpg at the end of the name. :-}

There is one guy who does shareware programs for HAM radio operators that
might have what you want.

This from the INFO-MAC Digest list
Info-mac is a large group of mirrored FTP servers around the workd that have
Mac shareware and Freeware that one can download and there is a Digest List
for the new additions to it.

Date: 23 Apr 2002
From: Chris Smolinski <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
To:
Subject: [*] Elmer 4.0.0

Program URL: http://www.blackcatsystems.com/software/elmer.html
Author email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Abstract:

Elmer creates sample tests to help you prepare for your ham radio written
examination. It contains all FCC question pools for each of the three
written exams: Technician, General, and Extra Class.

Elmer will grade your sample test, showing you which questions were
answered incorrectly. It will also indicate if you passed the exam. Elmer
keeps track of quick questions give you difficulty, and custom tailors
exams to emphasize these questions.

Shareware: $25

Chris Smolinski

[Archived as /info-mac/app/elmer-400.hqx; 1292 K]

In Anarchie or Interarchy [the current version name] you just copy the part
that starts with / and include up to the ; for example
/info-mac/app/elmer-400.hqx and paste it into the FTP download window in
Anarchie and Anarchie will use the info-mac server that you have set in
InternetConfig, if you have it set up properly.

One can use most any of the FTP programs like Fetch, etc. also, If you need
help with this let me know.

I don't know if Elmer 4.0.0 works on 68k Macs or not and I am not sure that
you will find what you are looking for in a 68k Mac version, but Chris
Smolinski does do the kind of shareware that you might want.

Excuse me, but BBEdit is NOT shareware, there is the full BBEdit which is a
fine Commercial Application and there is BBEdit Lite which is Free. Maybe the
Free version is meant? :-}

Version 5 is quite certain is PPC only.

The last version that would run on a 68k Mac was known as Anarchie Pro,
Anarchie was the original name and then the name was changed to Interarchy,
but it was a Ppc only application by then.

File Buddy 5.3.8 is even better and it runs on 68k Macs.

Macs are just fine with Disinfectant and WormScanner, for one thing I haven't
had a virus in 10 years. Last time I had one was when I was going to

My first thought is that you might have an extension conflict in there

two things I would check first, then after that I would think of resetting
the PRAM. :-}

There Is a nice shareware spreadsheet called Sum*It 1.0.4 that is
AppleScriptable I want to note.

For Tex-Edit Plus, just get a spell checker to use with Tex-Edit Plus, there
are a couple of choices one good one that is free is Excalibur, not free but
a very good spell checker is Spellswell Plus 2.1.4. both would run on an
older Mac. :-} The advantage to using Spellswell is that it uses Word
Services which Tex-Edit Plus does have, so it checks Tex-Edit Plus files
automatically once Tex-Edit Plus is configured to use Spellswell Plus.

QuickDraw GX, QuickDraw 3D are almost never used that I know of and OpenDoc
would be used only if you wanted to include CyberDog. :-}

>Am I missing something? Do the machines have the horsepower to run

Depends on the RAM and the Hard drive size as to how much to include. I have
a Quadra 610 with 7.6.1, so my list runs on my Machine just fine, I am not
sure about the models you list. :-}

For a News Reader: I use MT-NewsWatcher 2.4.4, there is also Hogwasher 2.6.1,
MacSOUP 2.3.3 and YA-NW 3.1.8 68k all of which I also have.

For Telnet there is: BetterTelnet 2.0fc1, NiftyTelnet 1.1, and Black Knight
1.0.7 also dataComet 4.6 for those IBM ones. I would also include Zterm 1.0.1
in case one needs it.

RealAudio Player 3.0 instead of RealAudio Player 2.0.2.

MacLink Plus 11.0.0 instead of MacLink Plus 9.0

Eudora Pro 4.2.2 instead of Eudora Light 3.1.1

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 is the last 68k version, but it has a
problem with secure sites because its security certificates expired at 2000,
otherwise it works fine and has Java if that is desired, which Netscape
NavigatorĀ 4.08 doesn't as it has no JAVA, but Netscape NavigatorĀ 4.08
handles secure sites just fine. :-}

iCAB would be a good choice for a browser. :-}

DropStuff w/EE 5.5, and StuffIt Expander 5.5 instead of DropStuff w/EE 4.5,
and StuffIt Expander 4.5, note that the 5.x versions are needed when
downloading recent StuffIt files.

AppleWorks 5.0.3 instead of ClarisWorks 2.1

>Is there a database that lists the versions/requirements for old programs?

If people wanted to help compile the info for applications that I don't have,
I would put together a FileMaker Pro 3/4 database, but one would need to have
FileMaker to run it. :-}

Re: AOL Instant Messenger

2002-09-08 Thread Denny Davis

I have AIM 2.01.617 installed now. It is working fine.

My question pertains to using it, does anyone have any experience in writing
AppleScripts for AOL Instant Messenger? Would they share some of them with me
if they have them? :-}

Also I want to set it up to log the text that I write and whatever anyone
else writes.

Anyone what to share their knowledge about AIM in general?

When looking at the sample AppleScripts I gather I can have AppleScript
write a log of what is typed in AIM. Can one log without AppleScript?

Anyway I am determined to write some AppleScripts, and I would greatly
appreciate it if there is anyone who has any experience with AppleScript and
AOL Instant Messenger.

In case some of you would like to put me on your buddy list I am including my
screen name, write to me and let me know what your screen name is if you do.

Hmm How about if you just install MacsBug and then install some MacsBug
Macros. Then when you are in the Debugger, you can hit the F2 key to return
to shell or hit the F5 key to restart for example. :-}

A Better way of being Technical. :-}

Besides I love to Hack My System and Anything else with ResEdiit, Also Using
AppleScript and I have BMUG's Zen and the Art of ResEdit and BMUG's The Tao
of AppleScript. :-}

Lots of other AppleScript books too!!

Technical is when you know how to send Apple Event codes and have a List of
them that you made by examing Scriptable Applications. :-}

If you like NewsWatcher there are two variants of that program that offer a
little bit more than the standard NewsWatcher. Note that you have to get the
older 68k versions and I have both if you can't find them, if you have tried
to find the older 68k versions and can't let me know.

MT-NewsWatcher [MultiThreaded-NewsWatcher] this is the the one that I use, it
allows for several ongoing actions at the same time.

YA-NewsWatcher [Yet Another-NewsWatcher] This allows for binary file uploads
I believe. MT-NewsWatcher does not allow for binary uploads.

one LAN. I wouldn't call it an event.

My GF has two PCs that I will be connecting to my LAN at some point in the
future, as we will be getting married. I am sort of looking for info on file
sharing and so on between PCs and Macs for that reason.

So at this point what versions of AIM are suitable for a Quadra 610? Also is
there a version of AIM that will run and do file transfering on a Mac
IIcx/Mac IIci? How about the PCs older Pentiums, with Windows 98?

As far as I know the answer is no. They don't make USB cards for NuBUS Macs
and they don't make PCI Adapters for NuBus. As far as I know they don't make
much of anything new for NuBus Macs at all. So they only cards you wpuld be
able to find are used ones.

What you would be better trying on a Quadra {assuming it has the 68040 that
has the fpu built in] is install NetBSD or OpenBSD both of which come in 68k
versions and both of them BSD versions of Unix. Not quite the same as Linux,

Hmm Internet Filter?

Do you mean one of those net nanny apps?

I don't know if there are any for 68k Macs there might be, go do a google
search.
Best is to just use Eudora and not use AOL, if you do use Eudora you can set
up spam filters for the email that she would get. She wouldn't get any email
that she shouldn't get I don't think.

If she doesn't use a browser without adult supervision then she wouldn't need
a net nanny :-}

No, sorry, as far as I know when you save a file it overwrites the old
file. Thus your old file on the hard drive is gone unless you had set up an
auto-backup or had made a copy and put it somewhere on the hard drive.

A disk utility would be what you would try if you had deleted the entire
database file or had some kind of problem where the file disappeared
entirely from your hard drive. I did have a bunch of files and applications
just disappear from on of my hard drives one time if fact and I had to
reinstall the applications and well a lot of the files were lost.

So I hope you can find your backup copy on one of your other disks, as I do
recall you saying that you had made one at one point. Otherwise you will
just have to reenter the data if you can't find your backup copy. Good luck.

I would try AppleScript and do it with AppleScript. You could also ask your
question in a Eudora list, I subscribe to two of them and can let you know
how to join if needed. Also here are some URLs with information that might
help.

Well the best I think is BBEdit 5.1 which will run on both your Macs, and
if you wanted to upgrade to 6.x it would work only on the G3 AV. If you
want to try BBEdit there is BBEdit Lite which you can get for Free and then
you can upgrade from BBEdit Lite to BBEdit. This is what I did. :-} I think
BBEdit 5.1 should still be available if you ask. If not well I have a
BBEdit 4.5 CD with Manual I could sell you.

BBEdit Lite is not AppleScriptable, but BBEdit is AppleScriptable and this
is a desirable feature.

Other alternatives all Shareware:

PageSpinner 2.1 68K [I have this] for the Quad 840AV & whatever the latest
PageSpinner is for the G3 AV, check the web page
.

PageSpinner is AppleScriptable.

Wallaby 1.2.2 from  DarkeagleSoftware
Wallaby is not Sciptable in the version that I have.

World Wide Web Weaver 2.1.1 or HTML Web Weaver Lite 3.0.1, basically the
same application in different versions, I have the installers for both of
them if needed. Also there is or was a commercial version called World Wide
Web Weaver for Mac
Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Not AppleScriptable that I recall.

Latest Netscape that will do Java on a 68k is NN 3.0.4, if you really want
Java this is probably best, IE 4.01 has Java, but its Java is not always
