Re: [q] 2 CD drives in a Quadra 950

2005-04-20 Thread PeterH5322

Has anyone ever put 2 CD drives in a Quadra 900/950?

No, but it is certainly possible.

There are CD bezels for the bottom device tray of a 9150 which will work.

(The speaker bezel of a 9150 contains the floppy drive, and the upper
device tray contains the tape drive).

The bottom device tray of a Q is ordinarily a hard drive, although I have
seen third-party optical drive bezels made for this position.

Using a combination of Q and 9150 bezels, you can do what you want to
accomplish.

A modified SCSI cable may be required, or a 9150 or WGS 95 SCSI cable
could be substituted.

Actually, I bought it from a LEM swap lister. It came from a WGS 9150,

Optional on Q900s and Q950s.

Standard equipment on WGS 9150s (both speeds).

Re: [q] Old Q950 just went out of service

2005-04-17 Thread PeterH5322

 I thought those old machines
couldn't read anything larger than 2G drives?

I use 4,3 Gb drive in my Q950 - it works just fine.

I have used ACARD SCSIDE Bridge products in my Q950 and the quite
similar 9150.

I have had no problem with 40 GB drives (via the ACARD).

The ACARD products have been updated to include support for 48-bit LBA,
so it is theoretically possible to install a 400 GB drive on a Q960.

Any Q (or early PPC) Mac which can support HFS+ is a possible candidate
for HUGE drives, converted to SCSI from UATA using the ACARD product.

For cost reasons, the largest real SCSI drives I use are 36 GB (these
being 10,000 rpm) or 18 GB (these being 7,200 rpm) in servers, and 4 or
9 GB in desktops.

Re: [q] Troubleshooting a Dead Q950

2005-03-21 Thread PeterH5322

I imagine the Q950 was
unplugged during its storage so the 3.6volt reading is a small surprise
to me unless its been changed recently?

The PRAM battery usually reads 3.68 volts when brand-new, about 3.6 volts
over most of its lifetime, about 3.2 volts or less when reaching its
economical lifetime, and 3.0 or under is considered dead.

Some machines will work with batteries under 3.0 volts, some won't.

[q]Re: Q950 SCSI Problems

2004-02-14 Thread PeterH5322
I came across a similar problem fairly recently when I was in the
position of donating old kit to a local charity. The hard drive simply
seemed to have stuck. All I did was to haul the hard drive out of the
box, hold it in the palm of one hand and give it a bloody good slap
with the other hand!

Although this problem, dubbed sticktion back in the Seagate ST-225 (20
MB, 5.25 SCSI drive) days, was generally believed to be fixed by drive
manufacturers in the 3.5 and 2.5 drives, and the last of the 5.25
drives, this problem occurs often with drives of any of the above sizes,
should the drive be left unoperated for a relatively long period of time.

The proper procedure to fix such a drive is to apply a source of power
to the drive, listen for the drive's so-called dc controller to attempt
to spool up the drive, which attempt will initially fail, but which the
drive will repeatedly execute until the drive becomes unstuck.
Application of a firm slap to the *side* of the drive will eventually
unstick the drive. It may take three to ten, or even more such attempts
in order to resolve the problem.

Once the drive starts to spool up, the problem is resolved.

The root cause is a flaw in the formulation of the lubricant which is
applied to the substrate of the disk platters during manufacturing.

The originally formulation was OK, but the manufacturer lost the
formulation and proceeded to ship a large, but unknown number of drives
each having this flaw.

Although IBM, unlike other manufacturers, made its own substrates, it
also suffered from these problems. IBM drives most often seen with
sticktion are the 1 GB and 2 GB, 1 high drives found in the Q950, the
WGS 95, and the 9150 (and related models).

Re: PRAM batteries

2003-10-20 Thread PeterH5322
I get mine from the Mac guy that services all the school computers.

[ snip ]

From now on I'm not leaving old batteries in stored machines.
Use a volt meter to check them and chuck them if they don't pass.

Lots of Macs wind up being donated to Goodwill Industries.

Since used Macs are a drug on the market, most Macs wind up in the
Goodwill's bargain barn, untested.

Twice a week they will purge themselves of obsolete 'puters. This is a
fine time to strip the Macs of any hard drives, RAM and PRAM batteries.

No need to buy the complete machines if the clerks will let you inspect
the machines.

I usually wind up with a few hands full of hard drives, RAM, VRAM and
batteries (remember: take the top of the battery box, too) and the usual
tab is usually a few dollars.

Re: SCSI Manager 4.3 and the Q900/950?

2003-10-07 Thread PeterH5322
More precisely, a CD-ROM _or_ a tape drive. There's only one drive bay
available for the removable media drive.

No, both ... the floppy can be deleted altogether, or it can be moved
down towards the speaker, using the 9150 front plastic and floppy bracket.

Hell, I've even installed a SCSI Zip in that location, using a special
adapter cable.

(9150 bezels are also handy, if not absolutely necessary, for some Q950
configurations).

What's wrong with it? :-)

Not enough drive connectors, and in the wrong configuration, for the
five drive shelf. The accessory comes with a replacement SCSI cable.

We're talking about different issue here: using the same IDs for the
devices connected to both SCSI buses.

The issue is the same, as I stated previously, and as you restated
immediately above ... but this thread has become defocused, and I have
become weary of it.

Re: SCSI Manager 4.3 and the Q900/950?

2003-10-06 Thread PeterH5322

It seems that 'hardware-wise', it's OK to have both buses fully
populated with devices, but most of standard software will go crazy
looking at it! :-)

The machine was designed to accommodate five internal HDs, and at least
in the WGS 95 incarnation it will accommodate a CD-ROM and a tape as well.

The five HDs are designated A, B, C, D and E, and each one has its own
SCSI ID switch. So also does the tape drive. The CD-ROM is
semi-permanently set as SCSI ID=3.

It is possible to install the five drive shelf on a Q950, although the
standard Q SCSI cable is incorrect for this accessory.

It is also possible to install the WGS 95's CD-ROM and tape bezels on a
Q, but the same comment as to the SCSI cable applies.

A maxed-out Q has all possible SCSI IDs in use: the CD-ROM is 3; the
tape is usually 6 (switchable); the two basic HDs are 0 and 1
(switchable); the three additional HDs are usually 2, 4 and 5
(switchable); the Mac is always 7.

With a properly configured 7.6.1 system (or perhaps with the SCSI Manager
4.3 extension taken from 7.5) there should be no conflicts after startup
is complete.

Application software doesn't know one SCSI bus (0, e.g.) from another (1,
e.g.). System software and utilities released concurrently or after 7.6.1
will know one bus from the other.

7.6.1 was used on PCI PowerMacs, and except for the 7200 these have two
SCSI buses, just as the Q does.

AMP has about 300 in stock, but their minimum order
is 1008 at $9 each and all the distributers are out of stock.

Call the AMP rep and ask for an engineering sample.

Don't go overboard. One or two will usually be provided with no problem.
More usually raises suspicion.

I usually ask for two because with fine-line parts one could be damaged
in shipment, anyway.

Samples are pulled from inventory and then manually bagged, thereby
leading to possible handling damage, not to mention damage during
shipment.

Re: SCSI Manager 4.3 and the Q900/950?

2003-10-01 Thread PeterH5322
The idea of the internal bus taking precedence over the external bus
comes from Apple documentation. I have never bothered to have
identical SCSI IDs on devices residing on both the built-in busses.

I have tested CD-ROMS on the internal and the external buses, both drives
being ID=3, and both are accessible with SCSI Manager 4.3.

So also are hard drives.

Now, booting is a different issue, and I do believe that the internal bus
takes precedence over an external bus, if there are identical IDs.

Upon installation of SCSI Manager 4.3, there are no virtual SCSI buses, and

Included in MacOS 7.6.1 or later.

It might be able to be extracted from the 7.6.1 installer files.

Don't know if it could be installed on an earlier MacOS, say 7.5.3, however.

Update ...

Power Computing encountered this problem on their machines, and they came up
with a solution independently.

There is a Power Copmputing SCSI Manager Update on Apple's legacy systems
download area.

From the Power Computing SCSI Manager 1.2 Update, available there, I quote:

Apple Computer addressed the problem with the 6360/64xx/54xx Update
(included on your Power System Software CD) and also in Drive Setup 1.2.2 included
with MacOS 7.6.

So, it would appear that 7.6 was the first MacOS to include SCSI Manager 4.3.

With SCSI Manager 4.3, the limitations are something like six physical SCSI

the HBA.

The maximum case is a 9600 with four UATA cards and the two mobo buses.

You can easily get four buses on the Q950, and the WGS 95 does exactly that,

In a DOS or PS card equipped machine, the DOS or PC card does all the audio

The dongle is a requirement for this, unless two monitors are used, and
then the issues are somewhat different.

I always use the dongle, and I always use a 20 multiscan monitor, and I
always install the (optional) DOS/PC monitor and sound extensions.

This way, I get completelty plug and play function between Mac and DOS/PC

Would the card work better in a Quadra 800?

If it has an '040 PDS, then yes.

Look for DrDOS 7.x Disk For BIOS Flashing Basic - No Drivers.

From that, you can probably bootstrap the installation of WIn31 at least, and
perhaps Win95.

Re: Quadra 610 DOS was (No Subject)

2003-09-20 Thread PeterH5322

If I remember right -- copy sys a: c: is what makes a drive bootable (
floppy to hard drive )

FORMAT A: /S is what makes the drive bootable. If the /S option is not
included, the drive is made usable for data storage, but not for system
residence.

Following that with COPY A:*.* C: will copy all visible files from A: to
C:

Including the /S option on the COPY command will copy any subdirectories.

A drive may only be made bootable at FORMAT time as much of the DOS
system is unmovable.

Re: Ethernet on lowendmacs

2003-08-31 Thread PeterH5322

Are the standard ethernet ports on post G3 macs
(ie..7200's,9600's,8500's,etc...) compatible with todays Linksys
EtherFast Cable routers/modems? Reason, When I plug these macs up to
Linksys routesr, I never get a full 100Mps connection speed.

The older macs are 10 mbps. These are definitely compatible with
EtherFast equipment.

If you're using multiple switches, routers and a broadband connection,
the first path, that from the 9600, say, to the switch will be at 10
mbps, whereas all subsequent paths will be at 100 mbps (and will be
full-duplex and non-blocking, too). The last path will be limited by that
device's capabilities (10 mbps for a broadand connection, perhaps 10/100
for a network printer, etcetera).

When intrermixing lots of older Macs and newer equipment, it is best to
get the older Mac to a 10/100 switch immediately, and to take advantage
of the non-blocking, full-duplex architecture of the switch.

In this way, you can have a Mac taking to a printer, say, while another
Mac talks to a broadband connection, say, and each can do its business
without regard to the other.

There can be as many seemingly independent connections going as there are
pairs of devices present.

With an older interconnection technology, a hub, say, there can be only
one connection active at a time, as the technology is blocking. It is
also half-duplex, so there can be only one direction (sending or
receiving) active at a time.

(To get 100 mbps out of an older Mac, you will need a PCI NIC).

Tray-loading CD-ROM bezels were made for the WGS 9150: P/N 922-0978.

This is located below the floppy, so you don't lose that useful (or useless,
depending upon your point of view) device.

This bezel also works on a Q900, Q950 or WGS 95.

I believe caddy-loading and tray-loading bezels were made by third parties
before Apple produced the tray-loading bezel for the WGS 9150.

I know of no slot-loading bezel made for any Quadra or WGS.

It's not.

The correct bezel for a Q950 or any other machine in that case is Apple's P/N
922-0978, which has 815-1749 molded into the back of the release button.

For some unknown reason, Apple didn't mold the 922-0978 part number in the

Re: Hard Drive in Mac 950

2003-07-01 Thread PeterH5322

In a message dated 7/1/03 8:04:56 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

I would like a bigger hard drive in the 950 server in our old school lab. Am
I restricted to only Apple SCSI drives?

Yes, and no.

If you want Drive Setup to support your SCSI drive, you are restricted to
those SCSI drives which Apple specifically supports in Drive Setup.

One of those was the Seagate ST-15150N, and Drive Setup will support a
generic ST-15150N. It is not necessary to use an Apple-branded ST-15150N.

Additionally, using the default Seagate resource as a model, it is possible
to support just about any SCSI drive in Drive Setup.

Just copy this fSCR resource (it is ID=599) and insert it as ID=128, then use
the Get Info function to change the Name from SEAGATE,* to, say,
WDIGTL,*, or FUJITSU,*, or whatever.

Finally, you can install a huge UATA hard drive using an ACARD N-SCSI
Bridge. There is a new one which mounts on the bottom of a 1 hard drive. About $79
from ACARD's US distributor.

I presently have a 120 GB UATA drive on my G3 MT server, although it is the
UW-SCSI version of this product, as my server is all UW-SCSI and the ATAPI
buses are used only for CD-ROM-R-R/W and DVD-ROM-R-R/W drives.

Depending upon how much storage you need (or want) the Bridge solution may
be the most economical.

Also, can I put in a SCSI CD-ROM drive? Any size or brand recommends?

Apple made a CD-ROM bezel for the Q950, but it is probably easier delete the
floppy drive and open up the floppy bezel to allow passage of the CD-ROM's
tray. You will have to remove the EMI shield in order to do this, and it is
convenient to have a Simonds (or Nicholson) laminate file, and a LOT of patience.

There are actually two CD-ROM bezels for the Q950-type case: 1) one intended
for the Q950/WGS 95, and which has the CD-ROM in the upper (floppy) position,
and 2) one intended for the WGS 9150 [ * ] , and which has the CD-ROM in the
lower position.

Both of these bezels are hard to find ... perhaps harder to find than Apple's
fabled five drive shelf.

[ * ] The floppy in the WGS 9150 was moved to the loudspeaker panel.

It is possible to modify this floppy bracket and panel to support a Zip drive.

CD-ROMs are pretty much standard. I've never seen one that was too wide ...

The overall form factor of CD-ROM drives are the same. Some DVD drives push
the depth limit, however.

There are three different locations of the manual eject hole on CD-ROM
drives. This varies by manufacturer, and sometimes within manufacturer.

To this end, Apple has three different CD-ROM bezels for some machine models,
the only difference being where the hole in the front surface of the bezel is
located.

Very unlikely, as they were produced in great numbers, unlike every other Mac
that has began fetching premium prices.

Q950s are so common here in Cupertino that the liquidators can't give them
away.

Of several dozen which were received by one of Sunnyvale's largest
liquidators, the infamous Weird Stuff Warehouse, a few were sold at the
initial asking price of $29.95, many more were sold at the reduced asking
price of $19.95, a few were sold at the final reduced price of $7.95, and the
remaining machines, about one-half of the total, were sent to the recycler.
Hell, the mobo or the PSU alone are worth $7.95. But, still no takers, hence
the trip to Quadra Motel ... the Mac goes in, but it doesn't come out.

On a lucky day, you can sometimes pick up a 9150/120, complete, for $45.

With these market realities, and the fact that a 950-sized machine costs
about $40, and up, to ship, it is doubtful that these machines will ever
fetch a premium.

Not that these aren't great machines. They are. It's just that there is an
oversupply of these, so there's nothing special about them.

If Sony's revision coding is anythin like some other Japanese companies I am

IOW, the 11 and 12 are not relevant, as long as the letter in the G position

There are actually quite a few such cards, from Apple, Orange Micro and Reply.

The Apple card was ultimately transferred to Reply, IIRC.

There are '040 PDS-based cards and PCI-based cards. Also 7100/8100/9150-based
cards.

Some have built-in Soundblaster support, others don't.

Some are called DOS Compatibility cards, some are called DOS on a Mac
cards, while others are called PC Compatibility cards.

Some will run Win98, but most won't. None, IIRC, will run NT.

Those which are stated to run Win311 will usually run Win95 but not Win98.

The DOS Compatibility cards were supplied with both DOS 6.2.2 and Win 3.1.1.

Later cards were supplied with DOS only, even though these were specifically
stated to be PC compatible.

Every one requires a dongle, and each dongle is different.

These cards, with the possible exception of the Reply DOS on a Mac card,
are pretty trouble free.

There are many restrictions on the Reply DOS on a Mac card, including the
dependence upon a specific version of CD-ROM on the Mac side.

The other versions of that card incorporate the very same card, but add an
extender for the (single) connector, which extender also provides some
mechanical support for the card.

As the connectors are readily available, you could make your own functional
extender, using a blank NuBus slot cover. The card wouldn't be as well
supported, but it would function as well.

The connections are one-to-one.

Re: X-over pinouts

lot. If it doesn't smoke it could just render a few of the component
in the circuit inoperative by shorting out. Like no work anymore.

I'm a self-taught networker. I have wired a few cables up wrong (in the
beginning at least) and never managed to blow any of my kit up. I would have
thought equipment would have been built with idiot tolerance for reversed
voltages, I know a lot of other stuff is.

Both wrong. But the first is more wrong than the second.

If a single-ended circuit, there is only +5 volts and +5 volts Return (AKA,
Ground).

Place +5 volts on a pin which is positive true logic, then that pin sees +,
ON, 1, whatever; place Ground on that same pin and that pin sees -, OFF,
0, whatever.

Place +5 volts on a pin which is negative true logic (such as a SCSI-N bus),
then that pin sees -, OFF, 0, whatever; place Ground on that same pin and
that pin sees +, ON, 1, whatever.

If a differential circuit (such as a SCSI-LVD bus), there is only + several
hundred millivolts with respect to a reference, and - several hundred
millivolts with respect to that same reference.

If the non-dotted terminal is positive with respect to the dotted terminal,
then the circuit sees +, ON, 1, whatever; if the non-dotted terminal is
negative with respect to the dotted terminal, then the circuit sees -, OFF,
0, whatever.

Many circuits, contain protection for intentionally reversed voltages.

XC should read MC, meaning Motorola, not XC, and the LC will be
absent on a full function chip.

Such a full function chip would read: MC68040RC33B, and this would decode
as follows:

MC - Motorola
68040 - it's an '040 (D'oh)
RC - ceramic, pin-through-hole package
33 - 33/66 MHz (33 MHz CPU, using a 66 MHz oscillator)
B - second revision of the mask set

Earlier Power Macintosh and Quadra computers have the Ethernet icon, as in
Figure 1, but with a different style of port. This is the Apple Attachment

Competitive machines (Sun, e.g., and many others as well) elected to use the
industry-standard AUI interface.

Apple, for reasons of conservation of backpanel space, elected to use its own
version of the AUI, and it (Apple), quite naturally, dubbed this equivalent,
but different interface, the Apple Attachment User Interface, or A-AUI.

Among several differences are the AUI's largish DB-15 connector, with a
single sliding bail, and the A-AUI's micro-miniature 16 pin connector, with a
double latch.

Also, the AUI requires +12 and +5 volts from the host, whereas the A-AUI,
being designed also to accommodate the realities of PowerBooks, requires +5
volts only.

Figure on $30 to $45 to ship.

It MAY be worth it to buy a Q950 IF is has: 1) a PPC Upgrade Card, 2) a five
drive shelf, 3) lots of drives, RAM and, especially, VRAM, such that you can
really use it for something.

The most expandible of the Q950-sized machines is the WGS9150, which already
has a PPC 601, but can be expanded to include a G3 processor card.

For a while, I was using a 9150 with a 300 MHz G3 card, a 24-bit Supemac card
(Ver. 3.1 ROM, which supports BOTH 68K and PPC modes), 136 MB of RAM, a
CD-ROM, a DDS-2 tape and a five drive shelf. $40 for that beast, at a local
PC liquidator.

Now, I would gladly pay $30 or so to ship a 9150 like that ... but probably
not a Q950.

They seem to be mounted on some sort of small brackets. Anyone have an idea
what they are or where to get something for mounting multiple drives?

Normally, drives of any kind (except the floppy, the DDS tape, and any drives
mounted in the infamous and unobtainable five drive shelf) are mounted
using an Apple bracket, P/N 805-5106-A, stacked two high and two deep, for a
total of four 5.25 1.6 high drives, or 3.5 1 or 1.6 high drives.

The referenced photo is a homegrown modification to the power supply's drive
shelf, which is actually intended as a receiver of the P/N 805-5106-A drive
mounting brackets.

If you're handy with metalworking tools, you could easily duplicate this
concept.

However, the machine's power and cooling system was not designed to have
drives mounted on their edges, as the referenced photo shows.

Good Luck in Your Quadra Improvement Project(TM).

Peter.

National Instruments is the premier manufacturer of IEEE-488 cards, and other

National Instruments makes several IEEE-488 (AKA, GPIB, HP-IB) cards which

Later Nikon film scanners were SCSI-2 based, the LS-3510, for example.

I've encountered humongous National Instruments cards in 840s, so some of
them must have been used in the music or film industry.

You're referring to the so-called (and incorrectly so) Centronics connector.

This is really an Amphenol 57 series connector, and is the basis of certain
telco products (in its 50-pin incarnation), certain SCSI products (also in
its 50-pin incarnation), certain printer products (in its 36-pin
incarnation), and IEEE-488 (in its 24-pin incarnation). Also, certain scanner
products (in its 16-pin incarnation).

However, the IEEE-488 incarnation uses a completely different shell and shell
attachment means, and is not from the Amphenol 57 series.

If it doesn't have such a connector then it is likely an Analog and/or
Digital I/O card.

If you see a DD-50 or a DD-100 connector, then it is most certainly a data
acquisition and control card.

Check the completed auctions on eBay. I recently picked up two in NJ, all

Here in Silicon Valley, home of Q950s, these wonderful old machines are
turning up in great numbers, and the usual starting price at liquidators is
around $30.

At that price, most liquidators can't give 'em away, so they reduce the price
to $20, and finally to $10.

When they reach $10, I'll usually buy a few just for the parts.

If they don't sell within two weeks at $10, then they're usually crushed.

My latest and greatest purchase from one of these liquidators was a 9150/120
for $45.

This machine included 136 MB of RAM (8 MB soldered on the mobo, 128 MB in 16
MB SIMMs), a DDS-2 tape drive, a 24X gen-u-wine Apple-branded CD-ROM in place
of the usual, for a 9150/120, Apple 600i CD-ROM, and the unobtanium, and
infamous five drive shelf.

No hard drive was included at that price, but just the five drive shelf
alone was worth $100, going by eBay prices, and that Apple-branded HP DDS-2
drive was also worth a pretty penny.

Had a Supermac Thunder/24 for millions of colors on a 21 monitor, and an
FWB JackHammer UW-SCSI controller, too.

Most Q950s, WGS 95s and 9150s are worth more dead than they are worth alive.

Oh, in case someone's interested, I have developed a great mod for the 9150
which allows the floppy to be replaced with a Zip.

This might be of interest to installations with newer machines as these don't
come with (nor do they support) floppys, but they do come with Zips.

Contact me off-line for more info.

Peter.

None of the Apples I am familiar with, and certainly not the 900/950/9150,
which I am intimately familiar with, have a linear power supply; all have a
switching power supply.

Transformer failures are exceptionally uncommon in switchers.

The most likely component failure in a switcher is a diode or a capacitor in
the primary side of the power supply (best case) or the switching transistor
(worst case). Also the MOV, which is a surge current-limiting device.

Since Q950 power supplies are so cheap these days (the postage costs more
than the supply itself), it is probably not worth the time and risk to
attempt to repair the supply.

Popking aound I note the psu is rated at 1.5a not 3 (on 200-240v), I'd
usually assume this means i should use a 1.5a fuse for protection but these
are not common, all computer stuff uses 3a or 5a fuses.

Any idea what could case this and what i should do.

Probably a failure in the primary side of the power supply, also known as the
converter section.

The most frequent cause of this type is failure of the bridge rectifier (if
self-contained) or one of the four diodes (if not self-contained).

This causes a short circuit, which blows the fuse in order to protect the
power supply from additional failures.

As most individuals don't have the specialized equipment, knowledge or skills
to perform component-level repairs on power supplies (these contain lethal
voltages, BTW), it is probably best to buy a replacement power supply and to
discard the failed one.

The PRAM battery in the Quadras I know (using 3.6V lithium battery) is NOT

Correct.

The 3.6 volt (nominal) lithium 1/2-AA batteries, as used in most desktop Macs
from the Quadra to the present day, are not rechargeable.

However, the VL series of lithium batteries, as used in the PB190, PB5xx
and PB5300 (and perhaps others) are indeed rechargeable. There are two 3.0
volt batteries in series, with both 3.0 and 6.0 volts being utilized by
various PB subsystems.

Rather, the power supply continually puts out a minute amount of voltage (5V,
1mA) whenever it is plugged in, which frees the battery from delivering any
power. When the computer is unplugged, the battery takes over.

Correct.

The 5-volt signal is called trickle.

And, unlike the implication in the name, it is NOT used to trickle charge
the 3.6 volt lithium battery, which is indeed NOT rechargeable.

A/UX only.

Unless the card is defective.

Otherwise, it is passive as long as the machine is running MacOS.

Talking of cards, what sort of value is on the SCSI card? It has all upgrade
slots filled. If it's only any use for AIX it could finance some bigger
drives.

It's such a specialized item, the card is worth whatever the market will bear
... which could range from zero dollars to the highest one has ever been sold
on e-Bone.

At a recent computer swap, one seller was trying to sell a purported WGS 95,
but it was really a Q950 into which had been installed a WGS 95 PDS card.

I told the seller I wanted the card, but not the machine.

The seller replied that the card made the machine a WGS 95, which was clearly
untrue as none of the other WGS features were in the machine, such as the
DDS-1 tape and the five drive shelf. Therefore, his machine was a
composite. Or, a FrankenMac, if you prefer.

Also, the SCSI cable was a Q950 cable and not a WGS 95 cable.

I politely informed him of the realities of what he had on his hands, and
that by selling me the card he could then turn his FrankenMac into a real
Q950 (true), and he was willing to part with the card for $10.

I reconfigured his machine as a Q950, and left the scene with a WGS SCSI DMA
card for a reasonable price.

If you don't need the card for true WGS 95 operations, best to sell it to
someone who is prepared to make better use of it.

My $0.02.

Same precise bracket as the rear brackets.

You must:

1) remove all three screws which retain the bracket base in the far forward
position,

2) slide the bracket base to the far rear position, and

3) remove the bottom front bracket, thereby removing the SyQuest AND the
floppy.

Reassemble in reverse.

Oh, sometimes it helps in the reassembly process to release the retaining
latches on the bezels.

Mostly, the Q950's case is all about the subtleties in precision assembly of
very tight tolerance components.

name so I can look for it on eBay?

A PC multiscan monitor and a PC (HD-15)-to-Mac (DB-15) dongle will do the

A non-multiscan, say one which is 640 x 480 VGA only, will not work.

2) Can someone tell me about PowerPC upgrades for Quadra's and the 950 model

in particular? Which are the more reputable manufacturers? What pitfalls

should I expect? And if you can point me to websites which talk about PPC

upgrades for older Macs, it would be greatly appreciated.

1) Apple's PPC Upgrade card, 66 HHz, easily and reliably extensible to 80 MHz,

2) Daystar's redesign of Apple's PPC Upgrade card, 100 MHz, and can't ho
higher without burning itself out, and

3) Sonnet's redesign of Daystar's redesign of Apple's PPC Upgrade card, also
100 MHz, and also can't go higher without burning itself out.

The Apple card for the Q950 also works in the Q650 and Q700 (and, with a
right-angle adapter, in the Q610).

The Daystar and Sonnet cards are oriented differently than the Apple card,
but will work in at least the Q950 and Q650 and probably the Q700, too.

Sometimes subtle firmware differences, ordered by the OEM, prevent this.

boot, maybe there's something similar for this card?

The old Radius and Supermac variable resolution units required a special boot
sequence in order to select from among several possible H-synch and V-sync
values.

If the special key sequence was held down during card initialization at the
beginning of boot time, the machine would be in a loop going through each
card and monitor resolution while the operator viewed the results.

When the most correct results appeared, the operator would press an escape
sequence, and that resolution would be written into PRAM, and the normal boot
sequence would continue.

Future boots did not require this resolution selection process to be repeated.

As the Colorboard 264 models (NuBus and SE/30) are 640 by 480 *only* and are
compatible with the Apple High Resolution RGB monitor *only*, there is no
resolution selection function built into this card.

The Monitors control panel will see the Colorboard 264 as a distinct card,
and will follow conventions as to which monitor is the boot monitor, and will
allow selection of pixel depth.

So, there is no support software required (or available) ... all required
functions are in the card's boot ROM. The MacOS boot process and the MacOS
Monitors control panel access this ROM just as these would for any video card.

True.

The Colorboard expects that the attached monitor is a High Resolution RGB
monitor, and only a High Resolution RGB monitor, and it neither interrogates
nor supplies any sense line information.

The user is going to have to depend upon the monitor itself sensing the
frequency and polarity of the V-sync and H-sync signals, and appropriately
setting itself to be compatible with the Colorboard.

About all the Colorboard will do is sense the presence or absence of a
monitor.

No, the 68040 should not be removed when a PPC Upgrade Card is used.

The PPC Upgrade Card could be good, yet the Q/C610's right-angle adapter
could be bad.

The Apple card (66 MHz; 50 MHz in some machines) and the DayStar/Sonnet card
are essentially the same card, but packaged quite differently.

All use the very same ROM chips and the very same custom LSIs, all of which
are Apple proprietary parts.

The Apple card supports only a times 2 clock; the DayStar/Sonnet card
supports only a times 3 and a times 4 clock, by a jumper setting.

The Apple card has an IBM PPC 601 chip which is rated 66 MHz; the
DayStar/Sonnet card has an IBM PPC 601 chip which is rated 100 MHz.

The Apple card can be chipped to 80 MHz; the DayStar/Sonnet card will fail
if the combination of the motherboard's 68040 clock and the PPC Upgrade
Card's jumper setting results in a 601 clock of greater than 100 MHz.

The NTR I/O board offers true Adobe PostScript Level 2, and simultaneous I/O

The PLW LS is somewhat equivalent to the LW II-SC.

The PLW NT is somewhat equivalent to the LW II-NT.

The PLW NTR is a completely new generation of I/O board, this one being
Apple's first to use a RISC (an AMD 29000), and is probably closer to the
replacement for the LW Pro 630, in that that one also featured an AMD 29000.

Basically, you install the fat system, then you open the PowerPC control

Re: Quadra 800 w/Sonnet PPC100MHz Card

I had the same problem with a DayStar PowerPro in a Q-800. It turned out to
not be properly seated in the PDS slot. It was one of my first upgrades and I
was just too careful. A little contact cleaner and, a little more pushing, a
working PPC800.

Improper seating problems plagues these PDS connectors. They must be seated
completely. If you can feel the interface between the mobo's connector and
the PDS card's connector, and you discover the least little bit of space,
then the PDS card is not seated correctly.

Since these are gold-plated connectors, contact cleaner is neither needed nor
recommended.

When i booted from the floppy it started the install process but told me it

could not find the a/ux install cd. the cdrom was visible to system.

The special A/UX boot floppy contains a special hacked version of Apple CD
ROM which will recognize *any* external drive, even ones not having an Apple
ROM. The support provided by CD ROM Hack is for mounting CDs as data disks on
the desktop only, not for any other purpose.

In fact, it is a good emergency CD ROM driver for laptops and other Macs not
having CD ROMs, for which you want to do a system install from a universal
install CD.

That's how I bootstrapped several MacOS versions to my PB540cs and Q950s
while using a generic external CD ROM drive (Sony CDU-541).
