[q] New Low End Mac email lists

2006-01-20 Thread Dan Knight
We've created some new email lists, but they're different from the old
ones. We're using Google Groups, which means you can sign up, change
your status, and read postings using your browser.

I hope to eventually move other lists to Google Groups as well.

The Macintel list, which covers all Intel-based Macs, went live last
week and has 57 members. Once the MacBook Pro ships, we're ready to
launch the MacBook List. I've also set up a Mac mini List.

Details:

Macintel List:
http://groups.google.com/group/macintel
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Mac mini List:
http://groups.google.com/group/Mac-mini-list
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

MacBook List:
http://groups.google.com/group/macbook-list
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

You can join any of these lists, but the MacBook List will not go live
until the MacBooks start shipping in February. Until then, all
Mac-on-Intel discussion should be on the Macintel List.

Depends on the file.
You know macs have to parts to each file, one resource and one is data.
Data is easy enough to understand, its the data. ;)
The Resource part or fork is the bit that tells the mac what to do with
the data, wonderful idea in the 80's but a load of crap now.

So transfering the file straight to a pc means you loose the resource
fork so once it gets to the emulator the virtual mac has no idea what to
do with it - wonderful isn't it?

Now you have worked out that stuffit type file will transfer as both
data and resource files are compressed into one file.

If you have ethernet on the quadra and ethernet on the pc hook them both
up to a hub and use Appleshare between the quadra and Basilisk II just
as you would between two macs.

BII comes with ethernet drives to enable this, add them to your network
card on the pc, the ethernet tab in BII will show something under other
than greyed boxes once its done, from there you have a networked mac in
your pc which you can use to talk to other macs. Not much good without a
nic in both machines so you'd be back to stuffing files in that case.

Hope that helps, please dont use capitals for your messages, nobody

Re: [q] neverending mac emulator problem...

2005-03-21 Thread Justin Zaza
okay, to clarify, i have the system disks on the
emulator, but they wont read... i click them and they
say cant read document to paraphrase... so i am
guessing that they arent readable or they are corrupt,
since i expanded them both on pc and mac... but maybe
your previous email was explaining that this is ok,
and that i should just put them on the designated hard
disk and proceed. i thought an installation procedure
should occur, starting with opening up the install
disks by double clicking them... and to repeat i
double click these system 7.5.3 disks and they arent
opening any sort of install process!

thank you for your time,

justin

I have sent you some instructions for creating a
 hardfile via the disk
tab in the B2 gui which will help.
You can not expand a hardfile, as with a real mac
 mount the disk you
wish to copy and the second larger disk then copy
 everything accross,
then remove the original disk and reboot. Windows
 will also work in this
way but from dos for best results - Mac has always
 done this better.

This is a fair list to ask questions about the macos
 running on top of
the emulator, the mac n dos list is better equiped
 for questions
regarding the emulator itself, your very close to
 getting it up and
running. Id keep the hardfiles downloaded from the
 web as they are, edit
things you make, if things go wrong you have good
 files to restart from.
Keep this in mind if you try OS8.x.

There is a 5 - 10mb pdf explaining how to set B2 up
 (including lots of
handy pics) which may be worth looking for, sorry I
 dont have a link on
 this box.

Around that time is when the Macintosh System Software - e.g. System
7.5.5 - became MacOS, because it's when Apple started allowing
licensed clones. MacOS 7.6 was the first OS branded MacOS because it
might be running on machines that were not Apple Macs.

So the system model was dropped from the About This Computer dialog,
as MacOS would not be able to accurately identify the legions of
non-Apple clones.

If you want it back, download install Mac Identifier 3. It puts back
the model info picture on all later versions, right up to 9.2.2. I
use it on all my machines. :-)

When you download mac files on a pc you loose the resource fork, to keep
it simple the mac no longer knows what to open the file with. If you
have downloaded files from apple they will be either .bin or .hqx,
either way *if* the drives you have mounted have stuffit or macbinary
installed you can drag the install file over to stuffit to unpack it to
a diskimage, unpack all and run the install from fthe first disk on the
desktop and install to a fresh hardfile (stuffit is requred, you can get
away with macbinary if you are using .bin files).

If you send me the link for the hardfile your using to boot I will be
able to see what your working with and better assist you.

Please read:
articals from http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/pc2mac.html
and http://macfaq.org/software/macos.shtml#Q1.1.6
just to confuse yourself. ;) there is alot of info on the parent sites
that we can all use.
http://macfaq.org/index.shtml
http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/ are two sites all mac68k (real/cloned
or emulated) should have bookmarked/downloaded.

2005-03-21 Thread Justin Zaza
sorry, accidentally pressed send...

i will try to read the articles...

and by the way- just in case there are shortcuts- the
only reason i need to do all this emulating, is that i
have a vast amount of information on an old 1985
program called deluxe music, which i need.

this deluxe music program does not work on system
7.5.5 or higher, it DOES work on 7.5.1 and lower, and
I'm hoping it works on 7.5.3 since i am unable to
locate 7.5.1

anyhow, thanks for the info, and wish my luck!

Re: [q] system don't recognize my mac model

2005-03-20 Thread Rob
I seem to recall that around that time, they stopped identifying the
model by name. It was around the time that the clones came out - so
perhaps that was part of the reason why they changed it.

It's probably not a problem unless it bugs you. You might google up

surely there is documentation... which you could read...
Also, you might ask someone for help on a list to which the topic would
be appropriate.

If not, the Mac n Dos list is a better forum for this topic than the Quad list.

Mac-N-DOS is a forum for Mac users who also use Windows -- and vice versa.
The list covers software emulators, hardware cards, file sharing,
networking, and any other issues involved in using both operating systems
on the same computer or network.

I have sent you some instructions for creating a hardfile via the disk
tab in the B2 gui which will help.
You can not expand a hardfile, as with a real mac mount the disk you
wish to copy and the second larger disk then copy everything accross,
then remove the original disk and reboot. Windows will also work in this
way but from dos for best results - Mac has always done this better.

This is a fair list to ask questions about the macos running on top of
the emulator, the mac n dos list is better equiped for questions
regarding the emulator itself, your very close to getting it up and
running. Id keep the hardfiles downloaded from the web as they are, edit
things you make, if things go wrong you have good files to restart from.
Keep this in mind if you try OS8.x.

There is a 5 - 10mb pdf explaining how to set B2 up (including lots of
handy pics) which may be worth looking for, sorry I dont have a link on
this box.

[q] Mac Quadra 950 Power supply pinout needed

2005-01-21 Thread Gheorghe Ardelean

Hi,

Did somebody have the pinout of the Quadra 950 PSU?
I have a Q950 motherboard and the connector has 22 pins but I don't have
the corresponding pinout. I am planning to make an adapter such that it
works with ATX or even AT PSU (I've done already this for IIvx/630/605 and
PM8100 and they work now with a normal AT PSU as they don't need 3.3V).

Regards,

G. Ardelean

A Quadra can be used under Mac OS for that purpose, as a router and
firewall. However, considering that there is a cost for buying the software
(like IPNetRouter) and the energy cost of keeping the Quadra turned on for
this purpose, and considering that a dedicated router/firewall device from
Linksys or Belkin costs about $50 these days (with very low power usage), it
does not make sense. Those small devices are designed just for this
purpose, so they are very easy to set up and use.
If that Quadra was also serving some other purpose (such as a data server or
web server), then it might (?) make sense.

I just received an email from a subscriber who got a challenge and

Our lists are already spam-proofed, so please don't use a challenge and
response anti-spam system on the address you use to subscribe to this
list. Here's our official policy on these services:

What about anti-spam services?

We already take the steps necessary to keep spam off our lists. Whatever
filtering you do with your email software and your email service is up to
you.

That said, we take a dim view of anti-spam services such as Spam Arrest
that require the sender of a message to respond to a message from the
anti-spam service before allowing the recipient to receive the posting.
Such a service inconveniences anyone who posts to the list and is
unnecessary.

These are all closed lists, so there is no spam. Only those who have
requested a subscription and confirmed their subscription are allowed to
post. If that is not good enough for you, please don't inconvenience our
members by asking them to jump through hoops to keep your mailbox spam
free.

Any subscriber using this kind of anti-spam service will receive one
warning. If the situation is not resolved quickly, the subscriber will be
banned. The burden should be on the spammers, not innocent list members.

Remember, one warning.

I ask that anyone posting to the list who receives a challenge and
response email forward it to me with anti-spam in the subject line.

Thanks!

Dan the listmom

As the ListMom noted (above) a few members on our lists are using
filtering services like cashette.com.

This is not allowed on the QuadList or the PCI-PowerMacs list.
Please remove the filtering service or unsub immediately.

Secondly, if you are going to be out of office you must unsub from the list.

With the holidays fast approaching this is advance warning that out of office
auto-reply services will result in banishment.

Then you will have to explain yourself before re-admittance to the list.

We are not going to tolerate all the out of office
messages during the holidays as in the past.

ok, i'll mention this here as well

i would personally use spamcop.net if i were concerned. they are cheap and use
a very good set of
methods that do not involve challenges or silly text scanning. i use them to
report spam and a
friend uses their filtering service, he's delighted with it. i have no
connection with them other
than being very, very happy with their reporting service which i use regularly
(and such reporting
does help reduce spam, you tend to be taken off the spam list since they really
don't want to be
reported to their isp, including those that host their site!). i've found all
other filtering to
be
nothing more than a pain that makes the problem worse. i'll refrain from cross
posting this
unless
the list mom thinks it's ok in this case, cross posting is another small
annoyance with a few list
members so i won't do it myself.

The plus is the end towards the left, if you're looking at it front-on.
minus towards the right (or CPU/Power supply end)

[q] Newbie to Mac world...

2004-05-25 Thread Qang Martoq
Hi,

I used to own a Mac Plus *long* ago (sadly, it was
stolen), and have been a Windoze user for several
years. Not by choice, mind you, just easy availability
of hardware on a shoestring budget.

Recently I downloaded a Mac emulator, Basilsk II, and
was sent the ROM files neccessary to run it as a Mac
Performa 630.

From what I have read, this Mac is an excellent
machine to learn on, not too complex or slow.

I'm in the process of downloading the System 7.5.3
Update 2.0 Net Install (one huge file, versus many
small ones) from Apple's site, but my question is
thus:

How do I go about installing it onto the emulator? The
emulator functions just as a real Mac would, startup
chord, happy Mac face, searching drives for a System
disk, so no extreme steps should be neccessary,
hopefully. (I had an old System 6.0.8 disk, but it
didn't like that one..)

The file appears to be compressed with StuffIt, from
what I can tell from the files extension (/bin) and
also .sea preceding that, so from what I can tell,
it's a compressed self-extracting archive that's been
recompressed.

I have the Windoe version of StuffIt Expander, and can
burn the file to a CD if needed for the emulator to
boot from it, but something tlls me I may need to do
more than that.

If memory serves, the Mac searches a boot disk for a
System folder. If it doesn't find one, you get the
disk icon with a question mark. This archive, not
having a readily accessible System folder, would most
likly be a waste of a CD.

So how can I get the System software to install? I'm
at a loss - My old Mac Plus never confronted me with
this, and my extensive knowledge of MS-DOZE/Windoze
isn't worth squat, lol.

Also, of note.. If I like how the emulation goes, I
may get myself another Mac. I'll be starting a new job
June 1st, and will soon have the money (and reason) to
treat myself - We shall see!

Hi,
Hi.
Grab these:

The Starterdisk is a drive image file which you can load into Basilisk
to get you started. It has stuffit and other tools to help you decode
bin, sit, hqx ect files onto a new larger hardfile.

The second link is the Basilisk manual, it might be handy but at 11mb
its up to you.

When the emulator is running you can mount the pc drive and copy mac
files from your win32 partition. This is the easist way but some files
like the .sea files may not transfer correctly. This is why you often
see .sea.bin or .sea.hqx. These files can be copied from pc to mac and
dropped onto stuffit to unpack.

I could ramble on about emulation for ages. ;) but better not. That
will get you started. You might try the Mac n Dos list for emulator
questions also.

Good luck

Re: [q] Mac VGA adapter

2004-05-08 Thread Bill Judson
I forgot something: with one of the Macs came another adaptor. This
one had two Mac monitor ports, one male, one female. No dip switches. On one
side its writen Supermac, on the other it has some kind of part number
and 832x624. Whats it supposed to do? Turn a monitor into a 832x624 one
dealing with the sense pins? Can it be of any help in my situation?

I suspect the SuperMac adaptor was for a multi-sync SuperMac monitor that
could do 832 x 640, to attach to an old-style Mac DB-15 port on a machine
that could do that res, but lacked the sense pins to automatically detect
it, had to be told that. This would include the 4*8 8*24 series of
Nubus cards. I have a MacLiberty connector I got from somewhere that had
Mac-to-Mac connectors. and a dial for various resolutions, for just that
purpose.

Why not give it a try? It might work, esp. with the SuperMac monitor.

All of the above modes are supported by the built-in graphics card on the
'040s, at least 640 x 480 on the IIvx. It may be a sync-on-green
problem, or some other problem with sync. Are there any controls on the
adaptor for things besides resolution?

In addition to resolution, my QVS adapter supports, with various
combinations of dip switches: Composite Sync (1), Composite Sync (2) --
whatever the difference is, Sync on Vertical, Sync on Horizontal, Separate
Sync, Sync-On-Green. Without the right type of sync, the various PC
monitors that I have tried can black out, too (with only the power LED to
show they're on), or black out, with an amber LED, or have a picture, but
with weird rolls or patterns.

Most often what works is either Composite Sync 1, Separate Sync, or
Sync-on-green.

Every 68k Mac with internal video since the LC (except the IIsi) supports
extended sense codes, which includes a profile for VGA, which is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] The closest resolution used by Apple was [EMAIL PROTECTED] I

I would guess that your adapter just isn't working. If you hook a VGA

Hi Kris,

Thank you for your answer. Is there a way to overrule the sense pins
information via software? If so, I could use Basilisk to produce a boot disk
with the apropriated extension (or whatever) and see if a can force the Mac

some of which the hard drives are blank or don't register at
 all. Some,
from various schools, has administrator passwords which stop
 me dead in
my tracks. I give these away to disabled and homebound
 people and have
given away over 25 computers here in my hometown.

Is there a startup disk for a Mac like there was for Windows
 9X and ME?
I would like to put it in and be able to format these disks
 and start all
over again. Since they won't take OS 7.6, I plan on
 downloading OS 7.5
since it is public domain. Should I see if there is a 7.5
 setup or, if I
put it on CD, if that would open things up to format and load?

Thanks. I have orders for six of these and so far, I only
 have two ready
 to go.

You can download the MacOS 7.5 set from Apple, then use it to create
floppies, then use the Tools floppy to boot with, which will allow you to
setup the internal hard disk.

If you can't get this to work (I haven't tried it from the free MacOS 7.5
stuff), I can send you a disk image of that floppy (since its now free,
there should be no reason I can't legally do that?).

Our MUG has done a similar thing with a number of Performa
 580 and 580
 CD models.

We installed OS 7.5.5 because, as you say, that was the last OS that
was in the pulbic domain. Apple made the 7.5.5 package available as a
CD-ROM installer as well as a package of something like 14 HD
diskettes. This was a number of years ago and I don't know if it is
still available from Apple or not. I am in Canada and would
 have bought
mine through Apple Canada back before there was such a thing as the
 Online Apple Store.

In any event, the package really boils down to a 7.5.3
 Installer and a
7.5.5 updater, as I recall. There is a 7.5.3 Disk Tools
 diskette which
could be used to boot the Mac and wipe an internal hard drive clean.

I would think all this would be available somewhere in the depths of
the Apple web site, depending upon your patience to go looking for it
or someone else supplying a URL.

There is a link from lowendmac.com - just look under OS Downloads on the
right side of the header.

  Hi, Listers,

Can someone tell me about a printer other than the old StyleWriters that
I can use on my 637CD.
I've upgraded the RAM to 64MB and installed a 3 gig HD. It is running OS
8.1 flawlessly. BUT the old StyleWriter 2400 is shot. Is there a
modern HP or Epson printer that can be used on this machine?

I have recently been through a circus getting an inkjet printer for
our house. The issues were to get the best printer I could while
still being compatible with at least back to OS 7.6.1 and preferably
networkable because I like to have all my printers networked. The
house is well wired, so networked printing is convenient.

The current crop of inkjet printers (and printers in general) do not
have serial ports. They have USB ports and a good many of them
still come with a parallel port. There are no USB cards or adapters
for the 637CD nor for any other machine which lacks Cardbus and PCI
  slots.

  1) So, you could get one of the adapter kits that lets you connect
your Mac to a parallel port printer through the Mac's serial port.
The thing is that the kit must come with a driver for your printer or
for a language that your printer understands. I think one such kit
  was called the Orange Grappler?

  2) Another option is to get a printer with a network port. Now days
that means an ethernet print server or ethernet card. This can get
expensive but it can also be very convenient. A printer which is
$70 by itself seems to suddenly gain $150 in price the moment you add
an ethernet adapter.I miss affordable LocalTalk printers, which
USB killed. Darn USB. USB isn't a network media, so it's silly,
but there you go. Of course, you need either an ethernet card in
your 637 or a LocalTalk to Ethernet bridge such as the Asantetalk in
order to connect your 637 to an ethernet capable printer.

The last time I checked, Epson had one of their network ready
printers on their clearance list for a decent price, but I think it
was wifi rather than cabled ethernet.

  3) Get an older printer. Here, your choices branch again into an
older printer with a serial port or an older printer which is
  networkable.

  A) Older printer with a serial port. For example, the Epson Stylus
Color 850 was pretty nice and it has a serial port. But, it's
resolution is only 1440 X 720 which is not so good by today's
standards. It's fine for text. It's not so great for printing
photos, but okay. You could check Epson's documentation to find the
highest resolution printer which came with the serial port and then
buy that one on the used market.

The 850 BTW, often goes on Ebay for under $20, but the shipping is
  about $20.

  B) An older printer with a network port. Many of the older
printers have a LocalTalk port, which looks like a serial port but
functions differently. One line of the Epson inkjet printers has a
Type B slot which is a proprietary Epson slot, but the cards are
fairly available on the used market. The Type B slot can take a
LocalTalk card, any of several models of ethernet card (including
10/100) and a few other cards which aren't relevant when you have a
  637 on the other end.

For example the Epson Stylus Color 980 (there is also a very
different Stylus Photo 980) has a type B slot and prints at 2880 X
1440, which is much nicer than the 850. It's also faster. One can
install the Epson LocalTalk card or any of several ethernet cards in
the B slot. The 980 only has USB and parallel, so you can't connect
it to an older Mac without a network card of some type.

The documentation for the 980 claims that it requires OS 8 or
greater, but that's because it only has the USB port and the USB
support requires OS8 or greater on the Mac. Once you install a
network card, it works at least back to 7.6.1.

  4) If you have a more modern Mac, you can buy a more recent printer,
connect it to your recent Mac through USB or Firewire (depending on
the printer) and then Share the printer on your network using the
software for the printer which allows this. Again, this requires
that your 637 be on a network with your other Mac. It also requires
that the modern Mac be turned on whenever you wish to print to that
  printer.

  Jeff Walther

  P.S. In my case, I

No, but If you network your mac you can use it as a network printer since

it to an older Mac without a network card of some type.

The documentation for the 980 claims that it requires OS 8 or
greater, but that's because it only has the USB port and the USB
support requires OS8 or greater on the Mac. Once you install a
network card, it works at least back to 7.6.1.

   4) If you have a more modern Mac, you can buy a more recent printer,
connect it to your recent Mac

Best bet i'd guess.
The only trouble we had with the 850c was a very bad batch of refills from HP
which we naturally blamed the printer for. Somewhere on the web I found a tip
about the bad QC on some refills and sure enough a new batch got it going good
as gold after sitting idle for a year or two.

I would think that many printers without the serial port would work with an
ethernet printserver. Many printers can be purchased with this feature or
it can be bought seperately (many routers can have one built in) or you can
use a modern computer as the print server.

I am pretty sure the mac can print to most printers over ethernet but you
may have trouble finding drivers if they are needed.

researched:
1. card, ethernet, 10 base-t, comm slot apple part # 661-0888 (source:
apple service price pages 01/99)
2. from mactracker: It (Quadra 630) was also released as LC 630 and
Performas 630, 630cd, 631cd, 635cd, 636, 636cd, 637cd, 638cd, and 640cd
each of which was bundled with different software, accessories,
monitors, and hard drives
so to answer my own statement yes there was a comm slot ethernet card
there should be some standoffs to support card if you find a pull.

Re: New printer for Mac 637CD

2004-01-18 Thread Jeff Walther
Date: Sun, 18 Jan 2004 07:51:41 -0600
From: Jim Raper [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: New printer for Mac 637CD

P.S. In my case, I collected five Stylus Color 850s on Ebay
intending to make one or two good working ones, and then found an SC
980 at Goodwill which works perfectly...

Doesn't the 637 have an LC PDS slot? It's basically a Q630 with
different accessories and maybe an LC 68040 instead of a full 68040.
And LC PDS ethernet cards are slightly more expensive than dirt.

Hi Stan,

I missed the first part of this. . .

But sounds like someone suggested you go to your
Apple Menu
to Control Panels
and to Startup Disk.

There you'll see the icons for whatever drives
you have installed.

Select the Hard Drive you want your computer to
start up from and that's it.

On the next re-boot or startup, the OS on the drive you selected
as your startup DISK (which here means Hard Drive)
will be the active OS and away you go.

Hope that's what you needed to hear. ;-)

Hi Stan,

8.6 is solid but requires about twice the memory to run;
about 24MB and 50 to 75MB more disk space for its size.

Mac OS 8.1 on an 8200 is probably the highest you should consider
going, unless you upgrade the RAM and/or hard drive, like someone
else said, too. Unless you need to run classic apps that require the
newer version of CarbonLib, 8.1 should be fine.

is there any reason why I

Try a ppc list.
8.5's only use is so you can use the 8.6 update.
A bloody good version of the macOS when compared to either the hotch potch of
8.1 or the plain lameness of 8.5, faster than either on a ppc mac. Some
highlights are better open transport and being able to use itunes, which is a
waste if you already have soundjam and possibly useless with a 120mhz 601.

OS9 is pure buggy bloatware for your 8200, yet another macOS who's update came
out so fast that you wonder why apple didn't just release the update first.

Quadras are 68k macs, I doubt the once removed rule covers ppc macs of any sort.

8.6 runs better than 8.1 on any ppc mac I've tried it on.
The first optimized OS for ppc's, no 68k code.
8.1 is ok, has a small resource drain but is a mish-mash of 68k-ppc code which
runs slower on the lowend ppc macs I have here.

8.6 requires a little more memory, not much compared to 9.x whill still has many
of the functions of 9.

If you can try 8.5/8.6 some how without buying the cd then a clean install of
the OS onto the second drive to trail its use would be best, personal taste will
make one OS better over the other.

I didn't notice the (OT) in the subject line. Frankly, I don't mind a little OT
about any mac.

Cheers

Excellent. Now here's another question: I'm not sure if the monitors

there an adapter I can get to change the 2 row 15 pin connection to a

...Floppies still have life in them regardless of what some idiot says,
much like crt's but thats for another list.

I bought 700 MHz eMac [17 CRT] with H-P scanner and Epson C42UX color
printer package last winter for 700$ only to find out CD drive is read
ONLY. Writer would be 200$ more and DVD/CD writer/reader goes for 499$
additional.

I've cabled my eMac to 5400 All-In-One for data and program transfers.
5400/603e cost me 79$ from Computer One reseller. They advertise in
Mac World if you want to try that route [gives you extra Mac for less
than cost of Super Drive too!] Bought 10 GB HD to replace the 500 MB HD
in 5400. Also bought Performa 6400/604e which has the awesome sounding
startup sound coming out of the speaker in the bottom of the tower
case. P-6400 cost 125$ but I forget which reseller company I got it
from. Still have Mac Plus, Color Classic and Mac IIfx I started with
way back in the misty obscured years of antiquity. Plus and Color
Classic were given to me and IIfx [screamer for its time] cost 80$ used.

I use PCMACLAN. Works great and the cost is worth it to me. Interesting that
it will allow printing over the network to my dumb non net-workable HP
printer. The Ghostspool app that comes with it free is the key. It is fed
from AppleTalk a postscript file and decodes it, printing to the host (PC)
printer port.

First thing that comes to mind is to make a disk image and transfer the
contents to it, calling it disk 1 or whatever. Same with the contents of
any other disks that make up the program.
This is not a perfect way as some installers look for a physical disk in
the floppy drive.

Maybe some sort of copy protection? I've been using PageMaker since 1.x, and
I think some were copy protected by key floppy.

If it is that, you'll definitely need a floppy for your Mac. By the time of
those old programs, no one could think of a Mac without floppy. Maybe
without HDD, but not without floppy.

First thing that comes to mind is to make a disk image and transfer the
contents to it, calling it disk 1 or whatever. Same with the contents of
any other disks that make up the program.
This is not a perfect way as some installers look for a physical disk in
the floppy drive.

Floppies still have life in them regardless of what some idiot says,

Also, recommendations for the best browser and email program for the Quadra?

This is true. I have roughly 2000 floppies (this is just 3.5 floppies) and
very few have failed me. In fact, I check my Macs via floppies from CMS
Enhancements, Inc, (only one of those disks claims to be bad but its for a
machine I don't have anyway )Mac TV, LC 520, Color Classic)). Plus,
floppies let me save stuff on the PCs at school and then bring it home with
me.

Hello All,

Suggestions Please.

You should be able to pop off the key with a flat screwdriver quite easily.
Sometimes junk can work its way under there and keep the key from moving
down, or make it stick. After you get the key off, a qtip dampened with
rubbing alcohol will remove any caked on crud.

Re: Hard Drive in Mac 950

2003-07-01 Thread PeterH5322

In a message dated 7/1/03 8:04:56 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

I would like a bigger hard drive in the 950 server in our old school lab. Am
I restricted to only Apple SCSI drives?

Yes, and no.

If you want Drive Setup to support your SCSI drive, you are restricted to
those SCSI drives which Apple specifically supports in Drive Setup.

One of those was the Seagate ST-15150N, and Drive Setup will support a
generic ST-15150N. It is not necessary to use an Apple-branded ST-15150N.

Additionally, using the default Seagate resource as a model, it is possible
to support just about any SCSI drive in Drive Setup.

Just copy this fSCR resource (it is ID=599) and insert it as ID=128, then use
the Get Info function to change the Name from SEAGATE,* to, say,
WDIGTL,*, or FUJITSU,*, or whatever.

Finally, you can install a huge UATA hard drive using an ACARD N-SCSI
Bridge. There is a new one which mounts on the bottom of a 1 hard drive. About $79
from ACARD's US distributor.

I presently have a 120 GB UATA drive on my G3 MT server, although it is the
UW-SCSI version of this product, as my server is all UW-SCSI and the ATAPI
buses are used only for CD-ROM-R-R/W and DVD-ROM-R-R/W drives.

Depending upon how much storage you need (or want) the Bridge solution may
be the most economical.

Also, can I put in a SCSI CD-ROM drive? Any size or brand recommends?

Apple made a CD-ROM bezel for the Q950, but it is probably easier delete the
floppy drive and open up the floppy bezel to allow passage of the CD-ROM's
tray. You will have to remove the EMI shield in order to do this, and it is
convenient to have a Simonds (or Nicholson) laminate file, and a LOT of patience.

There are actually two CD-ROM bezels for the Q950-type case: 1) one intended
for the Q950/WGS 95, and which has the CD-ROM in the upper (floppy) position,
and 2) one intended for the WGS 9150 [ * ] , and which has the CD-ROM in the
lower position.

Both of these bezels are hard to find ... perhaps harder to find than Apple's
fabled five drive shelf.

[ * ] The floppy in the WGS 9150 was moved to the loudspeaker panel.

It is possible to modify this floppy bracket and panel to support a Zip drive.

If I remember correctly, I believe 70ns is pretty standard for memory speed
with 60ns being harder to find. I am going to be putting them in a Centris
610, so from the above, I should be ok with 70ns RAM?

Also FYI, back in Denver where I used to live, was a weekly magazine that is
online now. Most of it was dedicated towards the PC, but would have good
Mac articles in them also.

If you chose the Colorado version and look ad some of the advertisements,
I have dealt with some of them personally and their prices aren't too bad.
72 pin SIMM RAM prices going for around $0.50 a meg used. Email me directly

Terry,

Make your first stop the excellent Low-End Mac FAQ
http://macfaq.org/index.shtml, created and maintained by the pickle.

Next, sort through all the resources available at http://lowendmac.com/
the LOW End Mac site. The item list down the right side of this page is a
good place to start.

And if you have time to browse a bit give a visit to both Resources for

When you have a more specific question/problem then There are several
PowerMac email newsletters where you can get help. There is a very nice
selection of these at http://lowendmac.com/lists/index.shtml.

As a subscriber (it's free) you can post (e-mail) your question(s) to the
group and you'll get back lots of answers from people much more expert
than I am. Be as specific as possible in your question giving them the
computer type, operating system version, harddrive size, amount of RAM,
name and version of any application(s) causing problems, etc. etc. In other
words, whatever you think might help the experts trouble-shoot your problem.

None of them are going to matter nearly as much as drive speed, for which I'd
recommend a SCSI accelerator and fast hard disk.

NuBus Mac for audio

2002-12-17 Thread PsycoPunkn
Hello. I have a Pro Audio Spectrum 16 card that I will be using to
record audio to a hard drive or RAM disk. I have some questions about using
a computer for this purpose. Would it be more important to have a faster
processor speed or faster bus speed? How much would level 2 cache help?
What would be the best setting for Disk Cache in the memory control panel?
What would be the best OS to run. The processor would be between an 80MHz
601 and a 120MHz 601+. Also heres a toughy...I have found that sometimes
when I record to a hard drive, the recording will skip, whereas when I record
to a RAM disk it doesnt, or at least not as often. However, the RAM disk is
only about 130MB in size, which is good for maybe 25 min of audio (right?).
Is there a way I can record to a hard drive but use the RAM as a buffer, so
it records quickly but then copies to the hard drive and clears out the RAM
disk of whats already has been copied. I have a SCSI card which I guess can
back up drives automatically or something, maybe I could use that on the RAM
disk?

Thanks for any help

Chris
