Thanks for your help. It's good to know the red exists - it seems to be
the one I want! I hope there's some information about this on the UK
site soon. I fear a $40 battery will translate to £40 though - as it
does for most of the accessories available over here. The fact that the
UK site mentions bathroom operation encourages me slightly. However the
lack of anything about the battery or red colour, and the mentions of
Rhapsody and Pandora (which we can't use) and a "color" display, make me
fear that the site hasn't been properly localised and is just a slightly
modified copy and paste from the US site.

Despite registering my interest as soon as the Radio and Touch appeared
on the site, I've had no information apart from a confirmation email.
Hopefully things will improve after tomorrow when they expect to get
their new email system working!

Regards,

John

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio using SlimCenter 7.3.3?

2009-10-11 Thread bluegaspode

Some results of my investigation of playing radiostations (I'm testing
with radio-stations from World->Europe->Germany->Berlin):

RadioStreams with mp3-format play well on Radio connected to 7.3.3
server (Star FM,
http://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s8041&partnerId=16)
RadioStreams with Windows-Media format don't play on radio connected to
7.3.3 server (RBB Radio Eins,
http://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s25111&partnerId=16)

Radio can play both streams when connected directly to MySqueezebox.com
.

I tried the same with my 7.3.3-Controller connected to 7.3.3 server.
When the Controller is selected as Player (thus Jive) I get the same
behaviour (mp3-streams playing, Windows Media not).
When the receiver is selected as Player it can play both streams.

So I assume that a 7.4 server does something to the Windows Media
Stream, that Jive (Radio or 7.4-Controller) can play them.
Maybe the receiver has some built-in decoder to play those streams even
with a 7.3 server ?

Micheal, can you share some light on this ?

Price is about the same as on the Logitech store. I bought my

Wonderful - many thanks. The mix of English and Dutch is fabulous.
There must be a word for the Dutch/English equivalent of Franglais or
Spanglish... :o)

It's amazing they are selling the red and also mention a Euro price for
the battery while the Logitech sites in Europe have no information
whatsoever about these products. I'll hang on a while and see if the red
appears in the UK, but have bookmarked their delightfully entertaining
page. :o)

Well, my point was that using the simple Search function within SBS and
MySB finds los40, M80, Cadena Ser. So you may be running around getting
URL's that are hit & miss with playback when it's already on your
server. :)

Maybe these are not the correct stations, maybe they don't play (I
didn't play them), dunno. Just trying to save you some possibly
unnecessary headaches. :)

Well, over here people like Engdutch (eng meaning scary in Dutch). And
the years of rivalry between the Dutch and English have given your
language enough new slang words I thought :)

BTW, their service is good. My transporter remote was stolen and they
sent me a new one for free (at the time the remotes weren't even
mentioned on the Logitech site).

FYI, I designed the dimming circuit for the display, and I'm super
paranoid about things keeping me up at night. I made it so that even in
a darkened bedroom, the dimmest setting is just readable. The current
software does auto-dimming, or manual dimming -- you choose. There is
still some optimization that needs to be done on the dimming algorithms,
but it's really pretty good as is. Future software may allow even
dimmer settings.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] bass and treble adjustments?

2009-10-11 Thread joergen

Even though the Radio sound might be well-balanced, I find speech quite
often sounding annoyingly 'boomy'.

The SB Radio is less so than the otherwise excellent Wi-Fi radio
'Airstream 10' by loudspeaker producer Monitor Audio, which I therefore
returned.

My hunch is adding bass is a trend not only embraced by set producers,
but also by several broadcasters.

I am therefore hoping for an equalizer in the future.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] bass and treble adjustments?

2009-10-11 Thread Keymaster

I've found that SB Radio is sensitive to quarter space placement (like
many other devices). "Quarter space" of course being techspeak for "in
a corner". Try moving the radio around a bit, and also, see if your
head is in a quarter space when you notice this (i.e. bed up against a
wall and your head rests in the corner)

I generally have mine placed about 2 feet in front of a wall. Corners
are about 5-6 feet in either direction.

With all the EU and California and other worldwide regulations, you
won't see many/any new products with linear power supplies -- virtually
everything will use switching power supplies from now on. Most of those
are wide range input, but definitely not all.

So far, our products (the Squeezeboxes) always use wide range input
voltage. Generally from 100V to 230 or 240 V. This was not true of the
old Squeezebox Classic supply, but has been true of all products in the
last 3 years or so.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Would like one, but...

2009-10-11 Thread jimzak

I'm not sure where to put it.

I'm using a Boom at the bedside and it looks and sounds great.

I'm using a Boom in my office with a subwoofer. Similarly it looks and
sounds great.

I'm using a Duet in the living room and that works well of course with
the sound system.

I guess I could get one for the guest bedroom but it would hardly be
used.

I'm also hesitant because version 7.4 of the software seems to be
causing some minor problems on a new, dedicated server computer. I'm
aware that the problems will likely be fixed in later releases.

However, my desire for new tech is driving me hard to get a radio.

Likely I'll replace the receiver component of the Duet in the LR with a
Touch when it comes out anyway.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Alarm Issues

2009-10-11 Thread gdpeck

Hi All,
I've had my new Radio for a few days now, and I really, really like it
as a bedside streaming device. However one of the main pieces of
functionality I purchased the radio for was for it's alarm clock
functionality, which I feel is very complicated and lacking in
functionality. I've found a few bugs that have already been reported,
and have added one or two of my own. If these are issues that you care
about, please look at and vote, or comment on these bugs. Here are the
issues that are bugging me the most.

1-Next set alarm time doesn't display on the clock. I can see that an
alarm is set, but have to go a couple of menu levels deep to actually
see what time the alarm is set for. This is reported as Bug 14708, and
you can vote or comment on this bug at:
https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14708

2-I don't use snooze. When my alarm fires, I press the power button to
stop the alarm. However, this leaves the alarm menu showing the next
time I power the radio on, and in some cases will continue to play the
alarm sound. This is reported as Bug 14702 and you can vote or comment
on this bug at: https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14702

3-It should be easy to get to the alarm menu. The alarm button on the
front panel is handy, but it doesn't function unless you power on the
radio first. I entered Bug 14715 requesting that the alarm button
functions regardless of the power on state. The preset buttons do this,
so I believe it should be possible. You can vote or comment on this bug
at https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14715

4-I'd like to be able to label alarms instead of having them just
called Alarm 1, Alarm 2, etc. I entered an enhancement request as Bug
14716 requesting this functionality. You can vote or comment on this bug
at https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14716

I'm sure there is stuff I missed, but if these things were in place, I
think the Radio's alarm functionality would be a lot better.

Thanks!
George

https://secure.slimdevices.com/categories.php?category=Accessories

That said, the cost of the battery is so much more than the remote
that selling them separately probably wouldn't save you much money (if
any) at all.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] First impressions.... not impressed

2009-10-11 Thread unclemat

This thing is buggy. Was sitting idle, only to be found showing empty
playlist and no button would do anything. I could not even power it off
by holding the power button. Had to yank the power cable out.

I am near the decision to send it back and pick up another Boom.
Portability is not super important to me.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] First impressions.... not impressed

Another changed/missing feature - I noticed that while browsing the
library, pressing a number key on the remote does not take one to the
position in the list as indicated by the letter associated with the
number, but instead it just selects a preset (if assigned).

Quite an oversight. Using knob is pretty quick, but it's really bad UE
design that remote functions from previous the older devices are not
preserved.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] ETA on battery for Radio?

2009-10-11 Thread MelonMonkey

Dean, care to provide any info on the battery pack? I mean technical
info, not marketing info. What are all the wires for? Pin assignments?
Is there a thermistor wired onto the pack?

It would have been so much more convenient for non-idiots to have had
the ability to just insert 10 NiMH AA cells. Of course you'd get the
brainiacs burning out the units by inserting alkalines or other
non-compatible chemistries. :)

US$50 is still way too steep (IMO) for a 10 cell pack. Logitech is
taking a play from DeWalt here it seems. ;) At $200 I'd really expect
the Radio to come with the pack and remote bundled. Especially if
Logitech's manufacturing margins have been streamlined and proportioned
in a similar fashion to their Harmony unit (inside info from some
employee on that front).

That said, I still think the Radio is a good value at $200 and I'm in
for at least one to add to my existing setup. Though likely two, as I
think one would go very well in our daughter's nursery.

And yeah, if Logitech is paying more than $2 for that remote, they're
overpaying.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Can IR receiver be disabled?

2009-10-11 Thread unclemat

So I am playing with the Radio in a room where I have a Classic. If I
use the remote usually both devices respond. Is there a way to disable
IR receiver on a player?

Radio in particular. One of its uses might be on my bed nightstand and
I have a SB2 in my bedroom as well. When I use the remote to control the
SB2 I don't want the Radio to come up.

Number 4 is a no-brainer. "Alarm 1" and "Alarm 2", etc. are really
nothing more than place holder names with no descriptive identity. You
should be able to label one as weekday, another as weekend, or one as
husband the other as wife, etc.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Wi-Fi connection details

2009-10-11 Thread MelonMonkey

If you want to secure your network you should learn a bit about wireless
security. Crazy SSID or non-broadcast ID do absolutely nothing to secure
your network. Nothing. Any idiot with a a tool to break your
encryption will also be able to find your network whether or not it has
an SSID.

Also, the characters valid for your passphrase has nothing to do with
the characters allowed for an SSID.

A number of products don't properly support WPA nor WPA2. The most
popular product I can think of is called Windows. XP doesn't
(generally) support WPA nor WPA2. Well, if you call a pass phrase of
*exactly* 13 characters "support" - that's not to spec.

WPA2 with AES is the only thing you need to set up and then pick
yourself a decent pass phrase. WEP can be broken faster than you can
type a new pass phrase and WPA with TKIP can be figured out pretty
quickly according to reports (never done that one myself).

Caleb answered most of those questions; see this thread:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=460161&highlight=thermistor#post460161

Some of the wires in the Radio's battery connector apparently are for a
serial port that's mainly intended for Logitech's use in servicing the
devices. I've asked a couple times for the pinouts, as I think it could
be fun to make a DB9 serial port for Radio, but nobody's provided that
info.

If its a new gadget Jones'ing that is drawing you to SB Radio, those
are really poor excuses!

The beauty of SB Radio is that it can go just about anywhere (other
then in a current stereo system). Spare bedroom, Bathroom, Kitchen,
Driveway to shoot some hoops or change the oil, other nightstand in same
bedroom with Boom, Poolside, Back Deck, Workshop, Home Gym, Home Office,
behind the Bar, the list is just about endless.

Of course my Motto is: There is no such thing as to much Sex, to much
Money, or to many Squeezeboxes!

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio use as bedside radio/alarm

2009-10-11 Thread jmpage2

I'm glad this has been asked and appears to have been addressed. I am
also a sleeper who is extremely sensitive to lights in my room, to the
point that I've had to put tape over the lights on many things such as
the base to my Harmony remote that is in the bedroom.

One of the questions that I have though is regarding the white numbers
on black background. Are there plans to provide other colors for the
alarm display? I've observed that blue is one of the hardest to sleep
with colors and red is one of the easiest to sleep with.

Thanks.

I can't address the "plans" issue.

But I agree that some of us are very sensitive to light for sleeping.
And for me as well, blue is really bad.

I know from sailboat racing that most of their instruments use red
lighting so as to not destroy your "night vision" ability. Our eyes seem
to tolerate a fair amount of red light in ways that blue or white just
can't do.

I just get used 'gels' from the local theater and put them on everything
that glows

Good question. I don't think we've really thought about it. I'll
forward this question on to the UI designers to see how hard it is to
change text color. I imagine it's quite simple. It could probably
either be a built-in clock, or a plugin.
