Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] more button and dimming display

2010-01-02 Thread rolf_the_wolf

One question regarding dimming.
Can you dimm down so that the room stays dark. I don't want a bedside
lamp which plays music. I rather like to get a radio, at which you can
dimm dark.

2010-01-02 Thread toxo

Hi,

since the server in Frankfurt is still offline (+48 hours!), i just
also forced my Squeezebox Radio to use the server with the ip
66.151.159.227 and it works.

Well that's good for people who know how to do this, but i think
everyone else will return they Squeezboxes as soon as possible. Even i
wanted to give it back today (bought mine on 24.12.2009). On amazon.de
the squeezebox radio is getting more an more bad comments. I still can't
understand the politics of logitech. Whoever is responsible for this
problem, should get fired!

Greetings from Germany.

Everybody is different, but the radio goes dim enough for me in a
totally dark room (which is dim enough to just see the time). Regarding
the more button, what not press it and see? ;-D. t give you access to
'more' :-D Stuff like ratings (if you have them) and extra metadata like
Biography/Album Review (if you are running the plugins) I don't use it a
lot but it's handy if you want to find something out. Oh you can also
use it to add to favourites and queue songs I think, but I use iPeng for

2010-01-02 Thread psprout

The Frankfurt datacenter appears to have been okay for me in the UK last
night and this morning. Switching a European SBR to point at the USA
could be considered a "fix" for those that know how to do it but I think
the real value in doing this is that it demonstrates that there are
issues with the European data center rather than individual SBRs. I hope
anyone else who successfully performs the switch during an outage will
also post to this thread. Thanks.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Losing presets after network reconnect

2010-01-02 Thread larsa

My SqueezeboxRadio once in a while "forgets" its wireless connection. I
have several computers, a PS3, and a Wii that does not exhibit this
behaviour. So I'm pretty sure its a bug in the SqueezeboxRadio.

But the worst part is that when I reconnect to the network, the 6
preset buttons also loose their settings. They are typically assigned my
6 favourite internet radio stations, and I need to assign them all over.

It is frustrating to reconnect the wireless network, but not that hard.
But I cannot comprehend why the settings of the 6 presets are affected
as well?

Although mine (in Germany) is working again since yesterday evening,
too, and I am still considering sending it back, keeping it and
connecting it with the American server when necessary does not sound

I hope it is not a stupid question but can someone explain how to do

I don't think you can :-(

It's another change for the worse; IMO. I think on other players, there is an
alarm screensaver mode that can be configured.

I think there's an open bug/enhancement request to have an option to make
alarms turn music on, and then not be in alarm mode any more. i.e. you
wouldn't then get the option to snooze or turn alarm off.

I really don't see the point in Alarm Off in particular - there's a dedicated
stop button that would stop the alarm, which is easier than selecting a menu
action.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Now it stopped working altogether (German data center of MYSB is done for?)

2010-01-02 Thread psprout

A word of warning - I've no idea what the risks of tampering with this
might be so you do it at your own risk.

1. Get the IP Address of your SBR

Settings > Advanced > Diagnostics > IP Address

2. Enable Remote login

Settings > Advanced > Remote Login > Enable SSH

3. Login

Using an SSH cleint of your choice (e.g. Putty) logon to your SBR using
the IP Address obtained in 1. and these credentials -

username - root
password - 1234

4. Change the default root password

from the command line type passwd and follow the prompts to change 1234
to something more secure. Don't forget this new password or its a
"Restore Factory Settings"

5a. Make a backup of your hosts file

cp /etc/hosts /etc/hosts.old

5b. Edit the hosts file to include a static DNS entry for the USA data
center

If you haven't used vi before do some www research to get a feel for it
first.

vi /etc/hosts
i

add the line:

66.151.159.227 baby.squeezenetwork.com

esc
:wq!

6. Reboot and check your SBR now points to the Sunnyvale CA data
center

Settings > Advanced > Squeezebox Information > mysqueezebox.com
Information

That's it. 5b. is probably the trickest step but some googling for vi
user guides should help. Not a great guide so if anyone wants to improve
it feel free.

Good Luck!

Do this at your own risk.
If anything is not working do a factory reset (pressing '+' while
booting).

On Windows do the following:
- Download and install WinSCP (http://winscp.net)
- On your Controller/Radio go to Settings->Advanced->Remote Login ,
enable it and write down the IP adress given there
- Start WinSCP, enter the IP adress under 'Host Name', as username take
'root', as password take '1234', as file protocoll take 'SCP', press
'login'.
You will get some messages, also one error message (just click it
away), when everything work you will be connected to your
radio/controller.
- On the right side of the window you see the files on your
radio/controller. You will be in /root so go one level up and navigate
to /etc and double-click the 'hosts'-file.
- add some lines so that it looks like the following for a US server.

Code:

  127.0.0.1 localhost
  66.150.114.115 jive.squeezenetwork.com
  66.150.114.115 baby.squeezenetwork.com

Close the file and wait a short moment as it gets uploaded to your
radio/controller (you will see a progress in the lower part of WinSCP)

- reboot your radio/controller (long press on the power button)

- if you go to Settings->Advanced->Diagnostics you should see the new
IP adress

I don't know if that is all that is needed but possibly worth a try.
If it isn't working make sure to remove the lines you added.
Also you can try different IPs posted a bit earlier
66.150.114.115 (USA)
66.151.159.227 (USA)
89.202.121.131 (Germany)

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] New to squeezbox - want to use it for alarm w/sirius

2010-01-02 Thread toby10

lindsayanng,

You can do either, connect the Radio to the SBS server program on your
computer or connect the Radio to the free MySB online server. Both will
get you Sirius.

The flexibility of the SB products is incredible, offering many
different user configuration scenarios, so this is likely where some of
the confusion comes in.

Some want to run their SB players via their local SBS server on their
computer which offers everything the online MySB offers, plus many
advantages like access to their own local music and much more
customization options on both the SBS server and the players.

While others prefer to only connect their players online to MySB, no
computer or local server program needed. But this will give them no
access to their local music and is lacking in customization options.

And others actually prefer to use both, switching back and forth
between the two at different times.

I'd suggest trying both, see what suits you best. :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Please HELP! Got SB Radio & AirPort Express..now what?

2010-01-02 Thread msigk

Hello again,
I got a Linksys WRT54G2 router yesterday at Best Buy. On sale, (
$44.99). I popped in the CD that came with it and hooked up the
hardware. Cool. I thought I was done.
NO WAY!! After googling the router and mac setup and checking Linksys'
pages I found out that I need to " MANUALLY " configure the TCP/IP
settings.
The paragraph reads: " The installation CD that came with the router is
only designed to work in a Windows-based computer. This is the reason
why manual configuration of the TCP/IP settings of your Mac is needed.
Before setting up the router, connect the modem to the router's Internet
port and the computer to any of the four Ethernet ports. After
connecting the devices, configure the TCP/IP Settings in the Mac
computer. For instructions, follow the steps below." Then they list the
steps. Sounds good, right? Nope. When I follow the steps they provide
I'm unable to continue past step 2 or 3 ( I forgot which ) of ALOT of
steps because what they want me to change is " grayed out " and I can't
click it.
I found a site on Google. It's from Mac people who have had similar
problems and some found a solution, some didn't, and one got so
frustrated that he went and bought the $179.00 Mac Airport Extreme
router.
Heck, I even got to that point after messing with this thing for over 4
hours. But even THAT wouldn't work with my " ancient eMac " 'cause I
read the specifications of the Airport Extreme and it says that I need
to be running Mac OS X 5. I think that's Leopard or Snow Leopard. I'm
running Tiger ( Mac OS X 10.4.11 ).
So here it is, another day. I'm not gonna give up because I REALLY want
to use the Squeezebox radio, especially since I found out from the BB
guy that the Battery Pack/ Remote Control package will be coming out in
February for the cost of around $50.00.
I'll list the site I found on Google re: Macs & Linksys.
If one of you guys who know what all of this means can give me a clue
as to what to do, I'd appreciate it immensely. There are so many
different
" fixes " listed, ( I tried some of them to no avail ) that I am
totally confused. Now it's a matter of this problem ( situation, really
) getting the best of me. And I'm going down fighting. It's a matter of
pride now for sure. I WILL get this thing up & running today and be
listening to German radio with my wife, my dog, and a nice cup of herbal
tea by this evening.
( I hope ;) ). Or I'll be at Best Buy purchasing a new iMac!
( yeah, I wish ;) ). There's an obstacle to this scenario called Pat. (
My wife ;) )
Anyway, here's the link to the folks who have this same problem.
If you'd care to help and simplify all of this for me I'd GREATLY
appreciate it.
One last thing. If there is definitely NO solution for me to use the SB
radio wirelessly, is there a way that I could just use, say, a 25'
ethernet cable and run it under my floor into the crawl space below the
house and exit the other end in my living room ( the eMac is in the den
) and connect it to the radio? ( I'd drill the holes and cover them ever
so carefully with the carpet and Krazy Glue so the wife wouldn't notice.
Drilling holes in the floor is
most likely a No-No in her book. Me? I don't care. Would I still be
able to do all of the stuff that I could've done wirelessly? Would the
computer need to be ON all of the time to use it this way? Whaa, I
want my radio!! ( sorry about that )
Here's the link and thanks alot guys.

First, it sounds like the setup CD is not necessary in your case. In
fact I don't think the setup CD is necessary with any linksys router.
The router has a built in web server that allows you to access all of
the setup screens. It also has a built in DHCP server so that your emac
and squeezebox can get IP addresses and talk to each other. If you plug
your emac into one of the ethernet ports on the router, it should get an
IP address and be able to connect. The default IP address of the router
is 192.168.6.1, and your eMac should get an IP address of 192.168.1.x.
Once that happens you should be able to browse to the router setup
screens by typing in http://192.168.6.1 in the address window of your
browser. If that doesn't happen, it usually means that the eMac doesn't
have the correct IP address.

As for plugging an ethernet cable into the Squeezebox Radio, that is
certainly a viable option, and may actually give you a more stable
connection than you will get using wireless. However, unless your DSL
modem has more than one ethernet port (most don't), you will still need
a router. I'm sending you a private message as well, so please check
that.

I'm using the Radio and SB3, and the locals show AM only on both the
players while connected to SBS or MySB.

I'm in Carlsbad, CA and local internet radio returns my location as
Vista, CA which is close enough. All of the AM stations listed are
indeed local, with quite a few LA stations thrown in.

Could it be that the algorithm used to determine what is local FM
thinks that Vista is too far from San Diego to include those stations in
the list? I'd even like to see some LA FM stations too just like it
shows for the AM stations.

Where is there a dedicated stop button? There's a pause button that's
dedicated (which can be held for a few seconds to stop, but then not a
simple press) -- and its really a pause button by the icon on it. Then
there is the standby button (ie. power off).

[SlimDevices: Radio] New Dimming Question (Manual) -- power saving dim?

2010-01-02 Thread eap

Is there anyway to stop the player from dimming slightly after a few
seconds. In other words, you are playing music and the now playing
screen is showing the song title/artist, and then after a bit it dims a
little. Why? There is no battery to save if its plugged in (it does
this for power reasons on the duet controller, but I see no reason for
that on the radio). Can the same brightness be kept all the time? I DO
have it in manual mode for dimming (not auto).

Also, this messes up manual dim settings for the clock screensaver.
Unless I put the radio in "standby" by pressing the power off button,
the same slight dim occurs when music is stopped or paused. I would
like the same brightness/dim level for the clock whether in standby or
paused/stopped.

So can this "power saving" dimming feature be turned off (I don't see
it in the menus anywhere).

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Now it stopped working altogether (German data center of MYSB is done for?)

2010-01-02 Thread jdoering

Both psprout's and bluegaspode's guides look good. I agree that psprout
that vi is easily the most error prone step for novices. I like being
able to automate this as much as possible to reduce complexity so here's
my modification of psprout's process to eliminate vi and make it easy to
switch back and forth. I've borrowed extensively from his steps that
remained the same.

INITIAL SETUP

1. Get the IP Address of your SBR using the Radio's menus:

Settings > Advanced > Diagnostics > IP Address

2. Enable Remote login using the Radio's menus:

Settings > Advanced > Remote Login > Enable SSH

3. Login

Using an SSH client of your choice (e.g. Putty on Windows) logon to
your SBR using the IP Address obtained in 1. and these credentials -

username - root
password - 1234

4. Change the default root password (OPTIONAL)

Use the command below and follow the prompts to change 1234 to
something more secure. Don't forget this new password or it's a "Restore
Factory Settings"

Code:

passwd

5. Setup four different configuration options for easy switching.
Execute these command exactly (this can be directly cut-and-pasted
verbatim into SSH clients like Putty):

Code:

  echo 127.0.0.1 localhost > /etc/hosts.orig
  ln -sf /etc/hosts.orig /etc/hosts
  cp /etc/hosts.orig /etc/hosts.sv
  cp /etc/hosts.orig /etc/hosts.dc
  cp /etc/hosts.orig /etc/hosts.de
  echo 66.151.159.229 baby.squeezenetwork.com >> /etc/hosts.sv
  echo 66.150.114.115 baby.squeezenetwork.com >> /etc/hosts.dc
  echo 89.202.121.133 baby.squeezenetwork.com >> /etc/hosts.de

If you cut-and-paste make sure the last command executes; you may have
to hit enter once.

That's it for initial setup. Your Radio will still have default
behavior now but will be ready for easy switching to a specific data
center or back to the original behavior of auto-selection based on
location.

CHOOSING A SPECIFIC DATA CENTER OR AUTO-SELECT

1. Login via SSH as during initial setup (or stay logged in if you're
doing it all in one shot). Use your new password if you changed it
during step 5 of initial setup.

2. Execute ONE of the following commands depending on the configuration
you desire:

Choose Silicon Valley Data Center:

Code:

  ln -sf /etc/hosts.sv /etc/hosts

Choose Washington D.C. Data Center:

Code:

  ln -sf /etc/hosts.dc /etc/hosts

Choose Germany Data Center:

Code:

  ln -sf /etc/hosts.de /etc/hosts

Choose Auto-Select by Location (default behavior):

Code:

  ln -sf /etc/hosts.orig /etc/hosts

3. Reboot your radio using the following command or a long press on the
power button:

Code:

  reboot -f

REMOVING THIS CUSTOMIZATION WITHOUT A FACTORY RESET

Code:

  rm /etc/hosts.sv
  rm /etc/hosts.dc
  rm /etc/hosts.de
  rm /etc/hosts.orig
  rm /etc/hosts
  echo 127.0.0.1 localhost > /etc/hosts

Now you'll probably want to reboot:

Code:

  reboot -f

Good luck and let me know if you find problems with these steps.

-Jeff

Yes, I had this issue as well. On a track that had no artwork, after

Thanks very much.

Maybe I should have been clearer. I have podcasts setup in SqueezeBox
Server (a built in feature), and in my Boom I have a podcasts section
(in Extras). But in the Radio, I have no such feature available through
the menu. The only way to play podcasts on the Radio is to navigate to
them through SBS and play them there - it's not possible to play them
from the Radio itself.

Any idea on RSS feeds? I loved using RSS feeds as a screensaver for
the Boom.

I can't help wishing the Radio was "slim" like the Boom, etc.

The Boom is altogether a more mature product (the guts of it are about 5
years old). The Radio clearly has "teething troubles. It's still a
lovely device though. Give it a couple of firmware revs.

My Radio has not done what you describe, but it's certainly acted odd.
A couple of mornings ago it got stuck in the menu after being taken out
of standby. The menu even animated, but I could not navigate anywhere,
Only avenue of escape was to powercycle.

Don't have a radio, but I understand you'll need an APP and an APPLET
for that. So you need the My PODCAST App added and then may need to add
an APPLET that matches that on the RADIO itself. Search the forums on
APP and APPLET. The boom wouldn't need this (just the podcast player in
extras is enough). But the Radio needs a local piece of software as
well.

Yes, you are absolutely the only one who thinks out of the box. No one
else would have ever dreamed of such a thing. Or, on the other hand, use
the forum search function and learn (a) it has already been discussed

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Local Internet Radio only includes AM stations

2010-01-02 Thread toby10

It should give all local radio (AM & FM) that is available for streaming
via the RadioTime database, dunno why yours does not do this.

SBS and MySB use a "geo-IP" best guesstimate on where you are located
and what is local. This is often very general and not very specific.
Often this is a fault of your ISP not using very geo-specific IP's for
it's users. The more specific the geo-IP used, the more specific SBS
and MySB can be. When the geo-IP is more general, covering an entire
region, the more guesswork must be done by SBS and MySB.

To get much more specific (and accurate) you can create a free
www.RadioTime.com account (enter your zip), then install and configure
the RadioTime App within your www.MySqueezeBox.com online account.

Although RadioTime provides the streams and database for both the
generic "geo-IP" guesstimate as well as the more specific (down to your
zip code) RadioTime linked account within MySB, the resulting local
stations can vary greatly.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Losing presets after network reconnect

2010-01-02 Thread vintage veloce

Larsa, this is a common problem... but search the forums a bit and you
will see several possible causes.
check this thread:
"Radio problems connecting to network/server"
Also, check the color of the wireless icon when you find the presets
lost. It may be that the wireless is actually up but the radio isn't
connecting to the mysqueezebox.com server.
Red = not connected to network
Blue = connected to network but NOT connected to server (SBS or MySB)
White = connected to network and server (SBS or MySB)

The presets are stored at the mysqueezebox.com server, NOT on your
radio. So when it can't find the server your presets are not available.
Stupid, yes we all know. Additionally, re-programming your resets is a
waste of time, if it's just a reaching the server problem.

When it happens, trying cycling the power on your radio (hold the power
button a couple seconds to turn it all the way off). And watch the color
of the wifi icon as above. I bet the presets work when the icon is
white.

It doesn't go back to full brightness for me when the song title

Or are you talking about playing local music files? I generally only

[SlimDevices: Radio] Behaviour Of SB Radio playing 'My Music'

2010-01-02 Thread frank1969

Hi,
I'm planning to buy a SB Radio but can't find any manual online (is
there anything anywhere?)

So maybe some SB Radio owner could help:
I wanna buy it mainly for playing "my music" from SC on my PC/network
on radio in another room.
Is album art/cover art fully supported (folder.jpg in album folder) or
is this only working with internet radio stations?

Additional question:
Are any facts known concerning the additional remote control? Could it
help while 'typing' on 'Search'-function instead of searching every
letter with the wheel?

Thanks for Your help!

[SlimDevices: Radio] Cannot see SB Radio in mysqueezebox.com

2010-01-02 Thread matengelen

Just got the SB Radio after Christmas and I have to admit that I love
and hate it already... The usability is - let's say - flawed; and there
are several "real" issues, too. But when it works, i love it :)
My main issue (SB Server not working on my main PC) is under
investigation with Logitech support, so I won't bore you with that one.

Anyway, here one of my lesser problems:
The SB radio can play Internet Radio and My Music from my secondary PC
(laptop), so everything seems to be fine. However, when I look for a
"Player" on mysqueezebox.com, it tells me that my player is not
registered. Both, SB Radio and laptop are connected to mysqueezebox.com
using the same username and password... So why won't the stupid site
find my SB Radio ?

Any tips are welcome,
Thanks and Happy New Year to all !!!

I did this, and the local entries do not change. I have to navigate to
"My Apps --> Radiotime --> Local Radio" to get the configuration I set
up on Radiotime. The SBS/MySB "local" entry off the Internet Radio menu
tree still behaves just as if you visit the Radiotime site as an
unregistered user -- in my case the Radiotime unregistered local list
maps to Vista, CA -- and it has no FM stations. No big deal; just a
different menu tree.

It's clear that SBS/MySB menu picks are a direct link to those at
radiotime; the search I mentioned above (for San Diego stations) is also
available directly on the site.

Thanks for your help!

[SlimDevices: Radio] Loud, random brief bursts of sound???

2010-01-02 Thread CECat

For the last couple of days, my radio has taken to emitting a loud
'flash' of sound, for lack of a better description, at seemingly random
moments. Yesterday, it occurred 3-4 times, each about 20 minutes or so
apart, in late afternoon.

The radio is used as an alarm, set for 7:00am each day. The alarm
plays an internet radio stream, which is one of my presets. That part
has been working better for the last week or so than it did initially.
We seem to be having far fewer instances of losing the MySB server. The
only time it is played is at bedtime, when it is set to go to sleep in
30 minutes, then alarm in the morning. The rest of the day it is in
standby. We've not been able to catch it before it happens, but it
doesn't appear that anything is occurring on the display -- just date
and time as normal.

Is my radio possessed, or has someone else witnessed a similar
phenomenon?

Cheers,
Susan

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Please HELP! Got SB Radio & AirPort Express..now what?

2010-01-02 Thread davep

Having set up a new Linksys wireless router on my Mac system just
yesterday I can confirm that no setup CD is necessary. All you need to
do is to plug the router into your mac using one of the numbered
ethernet ports, and put your internet connection into the one labelled
Internet. Then go to Safari and type http://192.168.1.1 into the
address bar and you should get the control panel for the linksys come
right up. From there you can configure lots of things but most stuff is
fine with the defaults. What I do suggest you change is the router name
- which is probably Linksys as default, and is a magnet for those nearby
looking for free wifi - and the security - I recommend WPA Personal with
a good strength password.

If you can't get to the control panel page then you could try pressing
and holding the Reset button on the router for 5 seconds which should
reset to the defaults and then let you in.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio random power-cycle

2010-01-02 Thread jimmy0487

Today's 7.4.2 beta appears to have things behaving.
I agree, the Boom is more stable, but not free from hiccups from
time-to-time.

I miss Sean.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Please HELP! Got SB Radio & AirPort Express..now what?

2010-01-02 Thread msigk

Dave,
I must obviously be connecting the router/modem/computer incorrectly.
Please humor me... From my telephone jack comes a wire which is plugged
into the modem that I got from Verizon. The wire goes into the
"telephone style"
port labeled DSL. Just next to it is a yellow port labeled " Data ".
>From that port exits a yellow wire marked " ethernet " and it goes up to
the " ethernet " port of my eMac. To the side of that port is the hole
for the power supply which is plugged into a power strip. The internet
works fine.
That's how it was before I got the Linksys Router.
I'm confused on the router part. If I plug the blue wire
supplied by Linksys into one of the four blue ports in the router and
connect it to the ethernet port in my eMac, then where does the wire
from the yellow " internet " port on the Router go? I did put it into
the yellow data port of the Verizon modem but then I have no internet.
And it's gotta go somewhere. ( yes, I did plug the power supply cord
from the router into my power strip )
I know there's gotta be a simple answer for this but my brain is
fried!
What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Michael K.

I think there has been some improvements in this direction in the
latest firmware version:

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Please HELP! Got SB Radio & AirPort Express..now what?

2010-01-02 Thread snarlydwarf

Basic connection for DSL:

You'll have a wire from the phoneco that goes to the dsl modem. This
carries DSL data.. the modem 'modulates and demodulates' (hence the
name) and then sends it to/from the ethernet port on the modem.

Now, in a simple one-device home, you could plug that into your Mac, as
you have done. But you have two devices now...

So you take the ethernet cable from the modem and plug it into the
router on the port labelled 'WAN' or 'Internet' or otherwise different
from the other ports.

Then you plug the Mac into one of the 'other' ports (usually 4 of them)
on the route.

You could plug a Radio or even things like network aware printers,
other machines, whatever ethernet devices you have into one of the other
4 ports... or connect them wirelessly.

The router is basically a 'connection sharing' device. It sits
directly on the internet and routes (hence the name) from your local
network to and from the internet. If it's a wireless router, it will
also route from your wireless network to and from the wired network and
to/from the internet as needed.

It's like a hub but smarter.

The only real trick is telling the difference between the ports on the
router, they're not all the same. The 'unique' one (WAN, or Internet or
however they label it) goes to your DSL or Cable modem.. the others go
to clients.

It should be pretty much plug it in and it works, except for setting a
password and name for your wireless network.
