Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Bug reports for 7.5.1.r9009

2010-09-29 Thread Ron Stordahl

Running 7.5.1.r9009 and mysb.

While I am experiencing the freeze of now playing information,
sometimes many times in an evening, I have never lost my presents.
Once the freeze occurs I have always had to reboot, however now I have
discovered that instead I can simply do:

Settings>Advanced>Networking>Choose Network>Connect to wirelsss
network> and then select the network shown as available.

It then disconnects and reconnects after which point the screen is
unfrozen. Of course this is rather awkward, but it may serve as a clue
to the source of the problem.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Now Playing artwork is not updating! HELP

2010-09-25 Thread Ron Stordahl

Since I only use mySB I have no way to test the beta firmware. Perhaps
I will have to bring up SBServer.but for now I am plagued by this
problem, it can happen several times every evening. As a test I
thought it would be worth trying a different wifi source and so brought
up a second one. I assigned channel 1 to one and channel 11 to the
second. One is a wrt54g running recent Linksys firmware, the second is
a wrt54gl running dd-wrt. Unfortunately it freezes just as regularly on
each of them.

But I did discover something, rather than having to reboot to unfreeze
the now playing information, I can instead switch wifi networks and
that unfreezes it. Unfortunately it is short lived, perhaps a few hours
and it will freeze again.

So it is no solution but perhaps it is a clue.

Incidentally the freeze problem is unrelated to changing from one
station to another. If you listen to a single station long enough it
will always eventually freeze.

Very annoying!

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Internet Traffic After SB OFF

2010-09-23 Thread Ron Stordahl

I think what you are suggesting is that pause is working as expected,
however when taping the power button the connection should be
terminated.

My prior response was to give an explanation for what you were
observing.

Continuing to buffer when pausing but immediately terminating the
connection when powering down seems sensible to me. I was surprised to
discover it didn't work that way.

You do have to maintain the connection to mySB (or SBS) for control,
but that is modest compared to the streaming traffic.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Internet Traffic After SB OFF

2010-09-22 Thread Ron Stordahl

I am running dd-wrt firmware in a wrt54gl which has a page displaying
graphically the wireless traffic. From this it is clear that the
SBRadio continues buffering the station you were listening to after
tapping the power button to turn off. The same occurs when you pause
the radio. The buffer is apparently quite large as this goes on for a
long time. When you resume the audio picks up exactly where you paused
or 'powered down'. Eventually however the buffer apparently fills and
the tcp connection is closed. The buffer is then dumped...as it should
be.

The approach the designers have taken seems sensible to me.

I have reported the problems directly to Logitech by their established
procedure. It resulted in their replacing the SBRadio for me, however
it made no difference and I so informed them.

They have told me that they are aware of the problems and are working
on updated firmware.

In my report I concentrated on the display freezing as to me that is
the most annoying problem for me.

Not much more I can do but wait.

It was too good to be true! This morning I started it, by pushing the
power button, then play. The screen was frozen, although I could
select new stations, but with no way to tell what they were with the
screen stuck on the one which was playing when I powered down last
evening.

Had to reboot.

Disappointed!

I have followed that approach successfully..to awaken press power first
then play. But today the screen stayed stuck on last nights station
inspite of following the 'workaround'. I can select and play new
stations, but the artwork is stuck at last night.

Only a reboot was able to get the screen alive again.

If you tap the power button to shut down, and later tap it again to
power up the radio does turn on but doesn't play until you either tap
play or reselect a station.

Simply tapping play is a one step way to wake it up and get playing.
It should work, and not cause the display to lock up.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Now Playing artwork is not updating! HELP

2010-08-22 Thread Ron Stordahl

All of my stations are via RadioTime and I connect to mysqueeebox.com.
I have not taken the time to even look into SqueeezeBox Server,
although I do see the value of SBS for convering and having my CD's
available on line. Maybe I will have time for that in the
winter...Summer is too short for all the effort that would take.

Nor do I use the alarms. My application is as simple as it gets, I
have 6 presets set up, plus a modest additional list of favorites.
Everything is from RadioTime.

The last display freeze was associated with pushing the play button
after turning off the prior night. The display freeze prior to that
occurred when switching stations using the presets. So that is the
'pattern'.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Now Playing artwork is not updating! HELP

2010-08-22 Thread Ron Stordahl

About 5 posts back in this topic I had reported that upgrading to
firmware r9009 had reduced my instances of the screen freezing to just
one instance in 3 days. I had intended to try BLatsD's sequence
should it reoccur. Last evening I had it playing CBC Classical and had
stopped it by tapping the power button, intending to resume in the AM by
pushing the play button. It did resume playing but the art was that of
the previous evening, although it was not completely frozen, it was
scrolling the title of what it had been playing last evening.
Selecting a new station(s) did connect to the new station(s) but the
artwork remained 'stuck'.

So I tried BLatsD's sequence. Holding down the pause key until the
stop symbol (the square dot) appeared, then continuing with his
sequence. His technique did NOT correct the problem. I see that TJ_
also failed to upright the boat using the BLatsD sequence.

I continued and tried everything but rebooting and nothing helped. I
can restore the play symbol (the right pointing triangle). In fact it
will pause and resume normally. I can successfully select new
stations. Everything is fine except the screen remains stuck at last
evening.

So I had to reboot, which itself is annoying as the radio puts out a
hellish blast of noise from the headphone jack, which I can live with
as rebooting should be rare anyway.

I cannot say that r9009 has been any improvement in this annoying
problem.

If I didn't like this product so much (with the hope that it will get
fixed) I would give up.

2010-08-20 Thread Ron Stordahl

After upgrading to firmware 7.5.1 r9009 I have experienced the 'frozen'
screen just once in the last 3 days. Prior to that it was more
frequent, but I suppose it could be that I am just not repeating the
exact sequence that causes it.

I rebooted, but then I was unaware of the work around suggested by
BLatSD. When it happens again I will try his 'trick'.

I am using SBRadio hardware version 5 and mysqueezebox.com.

I am hoping the next firmware update will eliminate this annoying

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Previewing alarm sounds

2010-08-18 Thread Ron Stordahl

Thanks bluegaspode!

You must actually set an alarm in order to preview it. This does make
sense and does enable you to preview them quickly.

The procedure:

Settings > Alarm Clock > Add Alarm At this point you must actually set
an alarm time, which we can later cancel by 'remove alarm'. Once the
alarm time is set, the screen will return to Alarm 1: 07:00 (at least
this was the default choice which I accepted. Now do:

Alarm 1: 07:00 > Alarm Sound > Musical Sounds > Barn Fire Now push the
play button to the right of the main knob. After previewing this sound
you can push the 'back' button to the left of the main knob twice to
get back to the list of Musical Sounds to make another selection
followed by the play key to hear it. Pushing the 'back' button three
times instead returns you to the list of all available alarm sounds so
you can continue previewing the possibilities.

The ready made sounds, 'Musical Sounds', etc would likely be more
reliable than picking a 'radio station' which might be off line just
when you need it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Thanks Squeezebox Radio

2010-08-01 Thread Ron Stordahl

Yes there should be more compliments about the SBR. If it were reliable
I would be the first to say it was the best $150.00 I have ever spent.

The screen occasionally freezes up when changing stations, using the
presets, requiring a reboot. So I tried leaving it on just one station
to see what would happen. The next morning it was frozen. Only a
reboot could get it going again.

Because of these issues I have not looked into the many extensive
features. If just the most simple uses were solid I would be singing
the praises of the SBR.

I am hoping that a future firmware update will solve the problems.

I have hardware version 5 firmware 7.5.1 r8837 with mysqueezebox.com.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] One problem, among many

2010-07-28 Thread Ron Stordahl

The "Settings->Player->Audio->Power On Resume" setting which Marc
describes in SBS does not appear to be available in the SBR menu nor on
mysqueezebox.com.

However pushing the 'play' button does wake up the radio and it
resumes. That is acceptable so I withdraw that criticism.

I will have to experiment further with the alarm, setting it via
mysqueezebox.com...but not tonight, its late.

I did mention there were other problems...one very annoying one is when
switching between stations, using the presets, the screen on the radio
will occasionally freeze at the station I was listening to, but the
music will switch to the new preset I have pushed. After this happens
all the presets remain functional, but the screen is frozen. The only
way out of this is to reboot.

Has anyone seen this?

With regard to the radio resuming the station playing at the time it was
turned off: This seems much to me like a fault as it acts the same way
when using the alarm. If the radio will not play when the alarm time
is reached then what good is the alarm? To me it seems like the same
problem as powering down and then up.

As regards firmware updates, I have it it just short of a month with
many problems, ranging from screen freeze to unexpected reboots.

It surprises me that Logitech would actually sell a product with so
many known faults. If I were in charge I would suspend sales/shipments
until the claimed functionality actually worked.

But that is just me!

[SlimDevices: Radio] One problem, among many

2010-07-28 Thread Ron Stordahl

I have numerous problems with my SBR Hardware version 5 Firmware version
7.5.1 r8837, but I will describe one which is 100% repeatable, and not
temporarily correctable by rebooting.

I use mysqueezebox.com (I do not run Squeezebox server).

If I am listing to a station, any station, and then power down the
radio by pushing the power button, the radio switches to the clock
display and the audio stop...this is all as it should. When I
subsequently want to start the radio by pushing the power button, it
appears to resume, but the connection to the radio station is
apparently not retried..if it is it is unsuccessful. The only way to
get the radio to resume is to manually reselect the station. This is
most easily done by programming one of the six selection keys to a
desired station. Upon pushing one of them the radio immediately
reconnects and plays.

If instead I set the timeout, say to 15 minutes, and the alarm clock to
'start' after this, say 10 minutes later, the radio shuts down at 15
minutes as it should, then at the alarm time (in this instance 10
minutes later) the radio restarts, but fails to play. It behaves, in
other words, exactly as described in the preceding paragraph.

There are other problems, which require rebooting to temporarily fix,
but I should think the simple problem I described above, if others are
experiencing it represent a firmware issue which needs to be resolved.

Can others reproduce the exact problem I am describing?

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] CBC Radio One and Two problems

2010-07-25 Thread Ron Stordahl

I can go to the same CBC Radio 2 feeds via my Windows laptop (Vista) and
they play fine. It's on the same wifi router box.

On my SBR when trying to play them it says: Connect timed out:
Transport endpoint is not connected. At other times the error message
is: Error reading headers: ..

I am not using SBS, my connection is via MySqueezeBox and it appears it
is getting its connection data from 'radiotime'.

And it is not only the classical CBC stations, I can't find any CBC
stations that work this morning. I have tried about a dozen. Last
night CBC Classica (Canada) worked just fine.

On the other hand WQXR-FM, ZET Chopin, Klassika Raadio Estonia etc etc
work. I only point this out to make the point that the problem is
selective.

Since the SBS appears to get it's connection info from RadioTime, I
went to the RadioTime website and found CBC Radio 2 Toronto. I was
able to play the station at once, yet I could not connect to the same
from the SBS.

So I am stumped at this point.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Z-2300 speakers

caszw: I have a SqueezeBox Radio (SBR) with firmware 7.5.1 r8837, the
latest 'final' version offered. I use the headphone jack to drive my
stereo system and it sounds very good. Assuming the 'speakers' you
intend to use offer a 'line level' input they should work equally
well.

The only issue I have with the headphone jack output is when you do a
reboot of the SBR, by holding in the power button for a few seconds,
the radio outputs some extremely loud irritating noise, much much
louder than the music level.

I would be interested to know if this also occurs with your SBR.

Of course I wouldn't need to reboot it so often if it didn't have so
many firmware issues! Then I wouldn't care about the ungodly loud
irritating noise, as it would be so rare!
