Do you live in a region where you have channel 12 and 13 ? Radio does
not always works very well with thoose ?

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Lost wifi connection and unable to reconnect ?

2017-01-29 Thread mbg

Since this is the most detailed thread on this topic, let me add my own
experiences:

- I have three Squeezebox Radio devices in my house
- Two of the devices work OK with auto-selection of the Wi-Fi channel
- One of them only works with Wi-Fi locked on channel 6. As described
here, if the channel is allowed to float then the radio will
intermittently lose connection to Wi-Fi and require rebooting to
  restore functionality.
- The two devices that work are UE Radios "downgraded" to work like
Squeezebox Radios. The one that requires locking is a Logitech
  Squeezebox Radio (pre-UE)

This has been reproduced multiple times - mostly recently when I changed
my wireless access points. By default, the channel was auto-selected and
my Radio started acting up again after being stable for years after
locking to channel 6.

also i add, im using windows xp so you can also rule out any mac issues

maybe a new firmware update is needed?

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Lost wifi connection and unable to reconnect ?

2011-10-09 Thread toby10

Try some very basic WiFi tweaks (1-5 require admin access to your router
to try these simple changes) simple troubleshooting:
1. use a unique SSID name (name of your network/router)
2. if using a G WiFi: set WiFi to G only (turns off a b modes)
3. if using an N WiFi: set to G Compatibility mode (if using G
devices)
4. change the broadcast channel to the least used channel near you
5. choose only channels 1 or 6 or 11 (or 13 if available)
6. router and WiFi antenna orientation adjustments can help signal
strength
7. keep router away from other electronic devices (cordless phones,
ISP modem, computers)
8. reboot WiFi router every once in a while (once a month is usually
sufficient)

If your WiFi network card software already gives the ch numbers and the
signal strength of all nearby networks, that's all you need. But there
are free programs like NetStumbler if needed.

Don't use channel 13 (any channel 11) with the Radio unless you patch
the Radio as described here:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17071

Although it works for some, it is definitely more trouble than its
worth and can lead, itself, to exactly the symptoms being described. In
fact, -make sure- your router is not on a channel 11 and is not on
auto, unless your Radio is patched!

Radios and a Touch. As the Superhub has firmware pushed by Virgin we
should be on the same firmware on both the Radio AND Superhub, so you
really should be able to get it to work.

Alternatively, it might be worth trying fixing WPA to AES - Auto
negotiation is not always 100% reliable, although for me it is working
perfectly. It might also be worth changing the LAN IP lease time - the
Superhub has a ridiculously short lease by default. I use 82800. Also,
try disabling the Superhub's firewall and IP flood detection, if you
have not aleady - they have been known to cause all kinds of problems

changing channels won't cause any issues. all your other stuff will
work without doing anything special. It is often best to use a channel
that is the least used channel nearby. You can see other nearby wifi
users and the channels they are using but using a simple, free program.

Ok thats probably me having such simple and oldfashioned router
myself.
much of the never stuff have old kinds of features that does not
really help with such a thing like setting up the network, feature
overloading stuff is the modern way. Who want's guest networks and
familly filters in the router ?
it was probably the auto word that got me suspicius :) it may work
fine ( or not ).

There could be all kinds of propriotary settings in routers designed to
make faster wifi that only work well the same brand wifi adapter in
the pc etc :-/ .

The idea is to get it as vanilla as possible, one network ( 192.168.0.x
) same subnet etc one DHCP if such thing are present, if static ip's are
in use keep the dhcp range of those, and my personal favorite wire
everything that is stationary, keep the wifi for the mobile stuff.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Lost wifi connection and unable to reconnect ?

2011-10-06 Thread LHoust

After a Week with 128-Bit WEP and MAC Address Filtering I only observed
one more Interruption of an Internet Radio Stream (WiFi Recovered and
the Play Button had to be pressed to restart the Stream, which was in
addition to that Partial Interruption mentioned in my previous post
where WiFi Recovered and the Stream continue by itself)... Having to
Cycle the Power or Restarting the Internet Radio Stream once a Week,
rather than once every morning (as it was with WPA/TKIP and WPA2/AES
Encryptions), we might find Acceptable??? Therefore I will keep the
Old D-Link Wireless-G Router configured with 128-Bit WEP Encryption
and have the Squeezebox's MAC Address entered as the ONLY WiFi Client
Allowed... Although still NOT a Workaround I would find
Acceptable for a City Location (since both WEP and MAC Address
Filtering can be Cracked), it will hopefully turn out NOT to have
been a Mistake in the Country Location???

My Hope is this WiFi Issue will be addressed in Firmware Releases
subsequent to SqueezeOS 7.6.1!!!

Final Note: I am NOT using a Local Squeezebox Server, but rather
MySqueezeBox.COM Directly...

I recently started to have the issue with both my SB Radios. After
doing a lot of wifi troubleshoting I lost patience and replaced a very
good simultaneous dual-band WiFi router with a brand new one.
The problem remains of songs stuttering and the radios freeze for
long periods.
To me, it seems like the radio is running at some high utilization that
affects playing. If music is streaming but I use any knobs or menus,
the box pauses for a long time.
WiFi signal is 98-100%, all diags look good, continuous pings never
miss a beat.
I tried the latest nightly build but now luck. I hope a fix comes
along ASAP!

...so why does it work for me and the majority of users who have used
the same or similar firmware ?

You can also have a server issue, knobs and menus local server or
mysqueezeebox.com ?
Many menus are server driven and if the menu content is slow to show up
it can be the server that is busy, or slow internet in case of
mysqueezebox.com.

The player can be in some ugly state needing a factory reset, the
upgrade may not have gone well, you can redo the upgrade and then
factory reset it.

To really exclude wifi problem, an experiment would be to try one radio
wired, assuming the server is wired to. Try without using sync.

Signal stregnth does not tell the whole story and ping does not consume
much bandwith, is it the same with an128kbps mp3 file compared to a flac
or wav file

It sometimes looses the wifi connection to the server, probably due to
some disturbance on the server side or on the wifi network, and after
this it's not possible to reconnect without rebooting the Radio.

I think I've only seen it while an alarm is playing but I'm not sure if
it's related to that as my Radio is mostly used on the mornings with an
alarm. I know I've seen it with a red network icon but I think I've
also seen it with a blue icon, in both cases it's just unable to
 reconnect.

Rebooting the Radio always solves the problem.
Does anyone else have similar problem ?

I’ve had this problem for the first time yesterday. I don’t know if
this is related to firmware but I have never encountered this with
7.5.0 which I was running previously. My radio has been running with
7.5.0 for almost one year. I now am running 7.6.1 since a couple of
weeks. I too recovered by cycling power to my Radio. I don’t believe
this has something to do with wifi security due to fact that my radio
has been flawless for almost one year (wireless security unchanged
during the whole period). I tend to suspect firmware over wireless
issues. I’m running WPA2-PSK and wireless strength on my Radio is 98%.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Lost wifi connection and unable to reconnect ?

2011-10-03 Thread LHoust

Although I have experienced similar Interruptions within Internet Radio
Streams with Encryption downgraded from WPA2/AES to WPA/TKIP, 128-Bit
WEP appears to be Promising...

With 128-Bit WEP Encryption so far I have been limited to a single
Occurrence where I witnessed the WiFi Icon Turning Red and after a
short while the WiFi Icon turned back to White before that Internet
Radio Silence turned into an Interruption (Play Mode had NOT turned
to Stopped and the Play Button did NOT have to be Pressed to
continue the Stream).

I will continue with my Comparison between MAC Address Filtering ALONE
and MAC Address Filtering combined with 128-Bit WEP Encryption???

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Lost wifi connection and unable to reconnect ?

2011-09-29 Thread LHoust

After pulling my Old D-Link Wireless Router out of Moth Balls and
configuring it for NO Encryption and MAC Address Filtering, I have had
two Morning Powerups where the Internet Radio has continued to Stream
past my Critical 1-Hour Window!!! Reasons the Old WBR-1310 was
retired included Poor Wireless Stability when using WPA/WPA2
Encryption and being Limited to ONLY 10 MAC Addresses for the
Filtering...

Understanding that MAC Addresses can be Spoofed this would NOT be
sufficient Protection for an Access Point in the City, although I
might concider using this Workaround at the Cottage in the Country
where the Nearest Neighbor is quite far away??? Plus I would use the
WBR-1310 ONLY for the Squeezebox Internet Radio Streaming, leaving all
other Wired and Wireless Devices on the Main DSL Modem where WPA2/AES
is required for WiFi Access...

In the Future my Morning Tests will have WEP Added to the MAC Address
Filtering, although with WEP also being Crackable it would give the
Script Kiddies a Second Layer to Hack through??? Lastly the WBR-1310
would only be Powered On when people were at the Cottage on the
Weekends... That said the Best would be if WPA2/AES within the
Squeezebox's Firmware could be made Reliabably with everyone's Access
Points!!!

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Lost wifi connection and unable to reconnect ?

2011-09-27 Thread nsfw

I ran for a couple years with the radio wirelessly using Mac Address
filtering as my security method. I moved into a new house and
decided to setup WPA2. I started to experience a lot of what you guys
are mentioning. I remove WPA2 security and went back to MAC address
filtering and so far so good.
Just in case someone doesn't understand, basically I'm passing all my
wifi data in the clear and a man in the middle could be looking at
all my unencrypted packets. BUT only devices that I have manually
added to a white list are allowed to connect to my wifi router.
My important machines are wired in my house, so I don't really care if
someone intercepts my radio streams or ipad/iphone traffic.
I might try the crappy WEP encryption just for fun to see if that
helps.

I believe that with 7.6+ a red icon is also used if the Squeezebox
server is unavailable, so it is worth checking when you have a red icon
whether it is really the Wifi that is down or connection to the server
(use advanced diagnostics to check the wireless connection). Either way
there is a problem to fix, but best to know for sure what the problem
is.

On one occasion while the Icon was still Red I had the WiFi Diagnosis
Report there was No Link... There were other indications where the
Squeezebox was telling me the Wireless AP was NO Longer Available (even
though from other Wireless Clients I knew the WIreless AP was still
Available), although presently I am NOT sure what I was doing at that
time to get that Message??? The Firmware was Upgraded to 7.6.1 shortly
after being purchased, although I seem to remember before with its
Factory Firmware the Squeezebox Radio was displaying something
slightly different when it was claiming the Wireless AP was NO longer
Available... Lastly I am using the Squeezebox Radio as a Standalone
Unit, I do NOT have the Squeezebox Server running elsewhere on the LANs
(if that makes any Difference to this Wireless AP/Red Icon Issue)???

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Lost wifi connection and unable to reconnect ?

2011-09-25 Thread LHoust

This morning while watching the Wireless Info Screen the Wireless
Signal dropped from its Normal Range of 80-90% down to 0%, then on
re-entering the Wireless Info Screen the Squeezebox Radio reported
Not connected. It was actually on the Network Health Screen where
the Squeezebox Radio reported Wireless - no link!!! The Icon had
remained Red for a fairly short period of time (maybe 1 - 2 Minutes)
before reconnecting itself to the Wireless AP (Icon returned to being
White with all of its Bars), although by then the Internet Radio Stream
had already Stopped Playing and the Play Button had to pressed for the
Stream to Continue Playing...

The Exact Firmware Version is 7.6.1r9482 and the Hardware Version is 5.
At home I normally only get only one of these Internet Radio Stream
Interruption/Red Icon Events each morning shortly after the Unit has
been turned on after being turned off over night, so I will probably
not see another Red Icon Event until tomorrow morning when the
Squeezebox Radio is turned back on??? By Initial Warm Up Period I
mean the Black Case above the Squeezebox Radio's LCD Display Screen is
NOT really Warm or Cold to the Touch, although the rest of the Black
Case feels Cool to the Touch!!!

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Lost wifi connection and unable to reconnect ?

2011-09-24 Thread LHoust

I am experiencing a similar problem after my New Unit has been turned
off overnight, within the first 30 - 60 Minutes the Squeezebox Radio
can claim there is NO WiFi Signal and WiFi Icon has turned Red (Status
reports No Link) and of course the Radio Stream has stopped playing
(even though other WiFi Devices have NOT reported any Wireless
Outage)!!! Typically occurs at least once each morning, possibly more
times within that Initial 30 - 60 Minute Warm Up Period, after which
the Internet Radio Stream can run uninterrupted all the way through the
following night??? Although Single WiFi Outages can occur at home, with
Cooler Mornings at the Cottage Multiple WiFi Outages can occur with that
Warm Up Period!!! Compounded by the fact there are no Cordless Phones
or other Wireless APs within Range (or even other Wireless Clients) at
the Cottage (ie. the Country is a much Clean Wireless Environment that
the City)???

After few minutes the Squeezebox Radio might find the Lost WiFi
Source (the WiFi Icon having returned to being White, with all of its
Strength Bars) on its own, at which time the Internet Radio Stream can
be restarted by simply pressing the Play Button... Otherwise after
turning the Unit off and back on the Squeezebox Radio might be able to
find its Lost WiFi Source or it might NOT???

Looks like there are more wireless signals conflicting with each other.
You could try to fix your wireless router to broadcast on a fixed
channel.

I had the same issue because of a conflicxt with a wireless headphone.
Fixing the network on a specific channel helped me out.

I'm experiencing similar flakiness on the network front - this with a
brand new (open-box) Radio, where the first week was general bliss. The
7.6 upgrade, combined with the pre-Lion upgrades on my mac mini server,
have created a number of moving parts.
Current experience is that the radio has the red wifi indicator, and I
can see my network just fine, with apparently good signal, but it just
won't connect. Frustrated, I walk away. Hours later, it's showing my
flickr screensaver (!) and it will play music if tested. More time
passes, no network.

However if left for about 5 - 7 minuets the the signal slowly comes up

do not suffer with wifi problems the radio is the only device on the

Any suggestions

If yes, try disabling that on the router, set it to YES: BROADCAST

See if that helps the Radio see your WiFi quicker.

Just an update regarding this, I changed the WiFi channel on the router
from 11 to 2 and now it has worked perfectly for several days in a row.
I'm not convinced it's solved but it looks very promising.

Maybe the WiFi circuits on the Radio is more sensitive to disturbances
then other WiFi devices I have and that's the reason why I only saw
problems with the Radio.

I don't think it's the laptop because I switched off the wifi circuits
on the laptop this morning and I'm still getting the same issue.

Nothing in the router log that indicates that it did a DHCP renewal but
it might of course fail before it gets to the router.

However, I'm starting to think it's something with the network because
this morning it failed to reconnect after restart also. At that time I
tried to move it really close to the router and it was still not able
to reconnect after a restart. It's just strange that all other WiFi
devices works perfectly the only device I've seen problems with is the
Radio. Maybe something is wrong with the WiFi circuits in my Radio.

I'm using 7.6 firmware at the moment so possibly it could have
something to do with that, but I've had these problem earlier with 7.5
also, just not every morning as it seems to be at the moment.

The strange thing is that the Radio is always able to reconnect if I

Does the re-connection logic after lost WiFi connection work for
everyone else ?

After rebooting Settings/Advanced/Diagnostics/Wireless info displays
Wireless signal = 100%. After it fails, it doesn't display any wireless

I've never seen any connection problem on the laptop which is at the

 Thank you.

Nope. This would only affect a device or application requiring UPnP
support. Like a PS3 accessing files on your computer.
I don't see where UPnP on the router has anything to do with connection
issues as mentioned in this thread, but then I'm no networking guru
either.
I've had UPnP enabled on my router for years without causing any such
connection issues.

I have a new squeezebox and had that problem. I went into my router
settings and disabled UPnP and it has resolved this issue. Worth a try
on your router.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Lost wifi connection and unable to reconnect ?

2011-03-04 Thread Ikabob

I have a similar but not exactly the same situation. I have reported
this in another thread. When I try to play certain radio stations I get
a crash of the SBS on my pc. Rebooting the SBdevice will not reestablish
the connection because the SBServer is not found/functional. If I check
the SBS control panel on the pc, it indicates that some ports have
failed. Rebooting the pc and reestablishing SBS is the only thing that
works.

Could disabling UPnP correct my issue too? How do you disable it...on
the router or on the pc? Thanks.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Lost wifi connection and unable to reconnect ?

2011-03-04 Thread jacamie

in your web address bar, type in 192.168.0.1. this should take you to
your router settings. If you get prompted for a user name and
password, 9 times out of ten it tends to be 'admin' for both. If not,
have a look for a sticker on your router which may tell you. When
there, hunt around for UPnP, and disable it if enabled. As I say, has
worked for me so is worth a try for you :-)

Thank you Jacamie. I'll give it a try. I can always enable UPnP if it
doesn't work for me.
