[RBW] Nekkid Sam Hillborne Photos Posted

2008-12-17 Thread CycloFiend

Just about to shut things down tonight when I wandered over to the RBW site
and noticed that they had added photos and deposit/order info on the Sam
Hillborne.

It's nekkid (not painted or powdercoated), but you get a pretty good sense
of the design.

http://www.rivbike.com/#product=50-700

Nicely appointed - looks like a threaded seatstay for fender mounting,
kickstand plate/chainstay bridge, fender and rack bosses at the rear
dropout, plus midstay bosses. Can't wait to see the first one all dolled up
and ready to roll!

I don't need to use anything too mountainy as my plans are more along
the lines of a super-stout Ahh-rounder type ride, so let me know what

I'll post plenty of photos as soon as the steel shows up. FYI - it's

The Apples look nice, but not sure they will fit the rims. I do recall
however that MA40s were re-rolled to 26 back in the day and fit with
pretty big rubber. Might be worth try either way. Even better = two

Marty:

That's a great tire choice. I've been using 35mm Marathon Supremes (got
them for flat resistance for road touring) since last summer found them to
work much better than expected on hard packed trails fire roads.
Surprising grip for a road tire zero flats. No experience in really soft
stuff or mud. But the XR bills itself as an expedition tire so it should be
even better in a wider range of conditions. Should work great.

Aren't the mounts behind the fork for a rack, like a big Nitto front
rack? That's all I can think they are for. The threaded fender mount
on the back is great. I don't think my AHH has it.

Yesterday I got the Nitto Albatross bars I ordered for my Surly. It's
totally snowing here in Portland, which isn't entirely odd but not
entirely normal either, so I'm working on the Surly. Who knows, maybe
I'll get to noodle around in the snow today.

[RBW] front derailer question

2008-12-17 Thread Doug Peterson
Fellow Rivendellers:

What FDs work best on an Atlantis, set up with a triple? I bought mine from
Riv as a complete bike in 03 here's the back story:

My Atlantis came with a Sugino XD crank with 24/36/46 rings a Shimano
Deore FD (just plain Deore; no extra letters or numbers on it). Setting the
FD with as little clearance as possible to the chainstay, there is a large
gap between the outer cage plate the big ring. I've always tried to get
that gap down to 1/16 on other bikes but this isn't possible on the
Atlantis. It's more like 3/8.

The bike shifted OK with the original rings (some pins ramps) but has
always been sensitive about FD travel a bit prone to tossing the chain
over the big ring. A few months back I finally replaced the original rings
with a 34 44 that I had in stock. Now the chain tossing has become
annoying.

Just chopping off the bottom of the FD to allow it to fit closer to the
rings is an obvious kluge but if there's a simple FD replacement that's a
better fit I'd be interested in hearing it. What works for others?

48T big ring, and it works fine - I have several of them - but they just
don't shift as nicely as the Racing T, and they stick out behind the
seat tube a lot, enough to interfere with the fender on my Velo Orange
(not likely to be a problem on an Atlantis, though).

Both of these are made for compact cranksets and have fairly short tails
on the derailleur cage.

[RBW] Re: front derailer question

2008-12-17 Thread Eric Norris

When I set up my Road Standard with a Campagnolo compact (50/32
double), I ended up using a standard (Chorus, I think) derailleur.

The triple compatible derailleur I had used in the past with compact
rings didn't want to work correctly. The standard double derailleur
works flawlessly.

[RBW] Re: Bombadil on the Way - Getting Tired

2008-12-17 Thread JoelMatthews

Not sure you need advice. The XR is a great choice for what sounds
like one heavy duty bike in the making. If you find yourself riding
more on pavement than mixed conditions, Marathon Supreme 40s will roll
a bit easier. Supremes will slide more than XRs on grass and loose
stuff though.

Looking forward to some pictures.

BTW, great foresight scoring and holding the Zephyr. Perfect crank
for the Bombadil.

need some thoughts on tire choices, and thought this group would have
an opinion or two. First of all, I should mention that I had Rich
build up a set of wheels using a pair of NOS MA40s I had squirreled
away - 40 holes to boot! I've ridden 36 hole MA40s that I got used
many years ago and have never had issues with durability, so 40s
should be even more Bombadilish. (Bombalicious?) I matched them with a
set of Phil-Riv hubs that Rich just happened to procure with the same
number of holes. The already look awesome!

I don't need to use anything too mountainy as my plans are more along
the lines of a super-stout Ahh-rounder type ride, so let me know what
you think might fit the bill - and the rims. Marathon XR 42s?

I'll post plenty of photos as soon as the steel shows up. FYI - it's
Black. I've been squirreling away parts 'n stuff for a while now. (Can
you say Zephyr?) Even a surprise part or two that I think you'll like.
But the rubber can't meet the road until - well, you know.

Thanks for the advice, and have a great Holiday season.

The Marathon XR's would probably be great. I put a set of 622 X 32 Marathon
Plus on my Quickbeam a few months ago. It's been my first experience with
Schwalbe tires and so far I'm impressed. Another option would be the
Continental Top Touring 622 X 47. I've run a set of them on my Atlantis for
about the same application you've described and they're pretty good.
Probably a bit less expensive than the Schwalbes too. Not sure they make 'em
anymore though.

Why buy an off road bike in order to put road tires on it?

Now for road use, skinnies are innies, IMO.

So, is anyone running any of these three tires under 35mm fenders?

I used Ruffy Tuffies with SKS plastic fenders, the narrower

Dam' good price! I wish you had been selling when I bought my Nigel!

I've switched to front loading for the daily necessaries, so no
longer need this saddlebag and seatpost-clamping support. They work
well together because the support slips into a pocket on the bottom
of the bag. The bag is a useful size (8.2 liters) and can carry a
jacket on the outside under its compression straps. The side pockets,
which secure with shock cord, are handy for small stuff. The bag
looks good in a casual sort of way ... a bit like upscale green Army
surplus, if you can imagine that.

The bag is in excellent functional shape, but it's not 100% original
in appearance. I modified the logo tab so it will take a clip-on tail
light. The bag came with an aluminum bar support across the top. It
had sharp corners that caused abrasion at both ends. I replaced the
bar with a dowel that has rounded ends. I had a shoemaker install
leather patches over the abraded cloth. The patches should eventually
match the straps on the bag, but presently they are lighter in color.
 I can send a photo.

The support keeps the bag off the tire or fender and minimizes sway.
It is in excellent condition, though its rubber post protector could
stand replacing with a bit of inner tube or similar. It's adaptable
(can be bent) and works well.

$95 PayPal for the set shipped to CONUS, a savings of $68 (more if
 you include shipping).

I'm running IRC 30 mm Tandems, that measure eggzakly 28 mm on my Weinmann

So, is anyone running any of these three tires under 35mm fenders?
The bike is a size 59cm (currently with 30mm Michelin dynamics).
Right now I'm leaning toward Panaracer 28s, which might run a little
smaller. I'm about 190, and have fatter tires on other bikes, so I'm
not necessarily looking for a trail tire - this will be a road bike,
and will take cross tires when the fenders are off down the line.

[RBW] Re: front derailer question

2008-12-17 Thread William Henderson

I've got the same setup on my Atlantis except I went with the Sora
derailler. Works great - just the right clearance and never throws
the chain.

[RBW] Re: 650B Rim Options

2008-12-17 Thread Bill M.

My Burley recumbent came with ZAC19's. The seams were horribly
uneven, and thumped badly under braking. And with a 20 front wheel,
that's a lot of thumping! I didn't care for the cheap Deore hubs,
either, the external rubber seals had way too much drag (again, the
20 wheel spins fast, so hub drag seems to matter even more than with
700's).

I built up some Velocity Aeroheats (20 front, 26 rear) with Phil
hubs for the 'bent, and have been much happier. I also have 650b
Velocity Synergies on my Kogswell, 26 Aeroheats on my Riv Mountain/
Expedition, and 700c Aeroheads on my Riv Road. No problems with any
of them. Can you guess what my recomendation would be?

Velo-Orange now sells the Weinmann Zac 19 rims. You might want to go
to the Velo-Orange website and take a look at their comments about the
rims.

[RBW] Re: Rom/Ram tire suggestions with 35mm hammered Honjos

2008-12-17 Thread JimD

I have Honjo 35 mm smooth fenders on my 61 cm Romulus.

Ruffy Tuffys work great with these fenders.

The 30 mm 700c Grand Bois is a tight fit. Too tight from my perspective.

During the summer I had the fenders off and ran Jack Brown Greens. No
way
those will work with the 35mm honjos and a shame as the Jack Browns
have become my favorite tire.
