[RBW] Re: What's in Your Saddlebag?
I'm not up to doing 200 anytime too soon maybe one day, but not yet. It's an assortment that, should be able to take care of a lot of things I could encounter. On my to-do list is to cut up a mailer envelope to make a few boots, and maybe add a fiberspoke, too. But whatever's in there is what's in there, I wouldn't pull stuff out for shorter, or shove more in for longer, I think what's in there will simply be in there for whatever I come across. Hopefully won't need it, but, it's there if I do. I'm used to old British vehicles I've got a '72 Land Rover that I rebuilt, and a '60 that I need to rebuild in a year or two so, I'm used to keeping tools on hand to be able to get back home, even from a short trip to the store.I'm usually not far from anywhere, would have a phone, could call about anybody and get help to arrive soon enough, if I didn't have any tools on hand. But, I kind of like having a bit of independence, not having to expect anyone to help. I've never needed a tool on my own bike on any ride that I've ever done; but, on many rides, I've ended up having to assist someone else. So, it's not even so much for being able to cover my own self, as it is to be able to lend a hand if needed... I'm considering dropping the multi-tool and going w/ just 4/5/6 allens, and maybe the chain-tool is overkill for most of my needs. And, I mounted my tubes/tires w/o the levers anyway, they're probably not a 'need' either. And, if I had a flat, I'd swap the tube and plan to patch the other back home, instead of on the spot... I look at the patch kit as a third line of defense after the two tubes. Plus, having two tubes, I could give one away if I ran into someone who needed one, and still have a spare for myself. Yeah, there's a bit of weight there, but, it's not like I'm trying to cut ounces, nor am I worried about the space, all of that will tuck into the back bottom corner of the bag, leaving plenty of room for about anything else. [RBW] Re: Widest wide range double chainring setup? How wide is too wide?
I have been running a 50/30 on the same crank arms on my Roadeo, phil 103 bb. I love it!! Only shifting onto the 30 for long or steep climbs. In the rear I have a 6 spd 13-28 freewheel and have not had to use the 30-28 yet, even on what I consider my "Test" hill that convinced me to put a tripple on my cross check. That being said it has a lot to do with the frame/drivetrain/tire/ rider interaction. I am convinced of this more and more every time I ride. I bought and restored an Eisentraut Model A from an uncle, and rode a hilly 40 mile loop with a 53/42 up front and a 13-28 in the back, roughy toughys on the rims. I flew through it and climb hills that I need a granny gear for on other bikes. That is what drove me towards a Roadeo. Back to your question, I run a 20 tooth spread, and use a flat plated shimano deerhead derailleur to avoid rubbing the crank arm, it works outstanding for my needs. Ditto for the 200 gram 571 23 mm Conti GPs on the gofast. Make of this what you will. This is goathead country. [RBW] Seriously disturbing
As I continue to ride the SH -- did 30 miles wed, 11 Thu and 20 today -- I find it very comfortable; the Sugino cranks are a bit wide -- I feel rather as if i am about to lay an egg -- but I swapped out the MKS touring pedals, which I liked, since they put my feet a bit more outside than the Dura Ace spds I swapped them for. I still feel as if I am waddling but after a few miles I get used to it. And, the bike certainly is smooth and feels fast: I haven't yet nstalled a computer; that's tonight's chore, bit I don't feel a lot slower than my gofasts. The jury is still out on the B17. It really feels comfortable *except* that the nose is a bit high and I'm afraid of chafing in the taintal area on long rides. I'll keep it on until I actually do some 40 or 50 milers in warm weather. OTOH, just now, fearing that my Riv customs -- with 130 Qs, 8 cm stems, 42 cm bars 2" below saddle, Flites -- would feel bad, I got on the commuter and rode around a bit; nope, it still feels very good. The bars are too low for all day riding, but these are fixed gears and not likely to be ridden more than 50 miles at a stretch, and they are fine for 50 miles. Request: Does anyone have a nice, 150 mm Q'd 110 triple -- I don't need rings -- for sale or swap? 150 or less. With that I could use the MKS touring pedals, which I'd prefer to do. 170, please. And if you have a bb assembly to go with it, I'm interested in that, too. Also: in the market for more Dura Ace spd pedals in good condition. Have for sale or trade: 1. Pair Wellgo track pedals, no clips or straps, excellent, $25 shipped CONUS. 2. Pair of nice MKS RX1 track pedals with Soma clips and nice straps, excellent except for scuff on right bottom where I cornered too fast, $75 shipped. 3. Pair of Look KEO Sprint pedals (Chromo axle), no cleats, used for only 200 miles or so, $85 shipped OBO. (These are not the recalled ones dating from 2004 -- 5; I bought them in December, 2009). -- Patrick Moore Albuquerque, NM For professional resumes, contact Patrick Moore, ACRW at resumespecialt...@gmail.com (505) 227-0523 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. The perception of brilliance will depend a lot on the price. Some people will think that the refurbished frameset has to be less than half the price of original retail to be worth it. [RBW] Re: Tubesets: Rambouillet v Roadeo
Exactly- "overly stout" is entirely subjective given the weight of the rider and riding style. When sachs builds frames for his racers, he has the advantage of knowing their weight (and since they're racers, they're probably not overly stout themselves) and can build the lightest bike that will still be durable and reliable under that individual rider. W'ford building the roadeos has no idea if the person riding it will be a featherweight or a clydesdale so they probably build the lightest bike that will still be durable and reliable under a range of riders; I think it's amazing that they are as light as they are. Being on the heavier side myself, if i ever bought one (hah! a guy can dream, right?) i'd probably never load it up with anything more than a small seat bag. RE: [RBW] Re: Schwalbe Kojak vs Jack Brown
I got 2 flats last year in about 1000 miles with JB Greens which I ride mostly on paved but with a little gravel and offroad thrown in now and then. Both times it was small glass slivers that made it through (no goatheads around this part of MA). I'm guessing these slivers would not have made it though something with a thicker or tougher tred. I love the way the JB's roll though. For this season I put some of those kevlar strips sold by Riv inside the tires and will try that. Here's a thought, though I'm not serious, but a narrow tire should run over less glass and debris than a wider tire right? So statistically less flats? If you had a tire 1/2" wide, you'd hardly ever get a flat! --- On Fri, 3/5/10, Joe Bartoe wrote: From: Joe Bartoe Subject: RE: [RBW] Re: Schwalbe Kojak vs Jack Brown To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Date: Friday, March 5, 2010, 11:13 AM Hi Mike, I've been running the Jack Brown Greens on my AHH. For paved road touring, I go with Supremes. I cannot imagine any other tire has a better durability to weight and rolling resistance ratio. The Kojak is a smoother, faster tire, but not as bullet proof. I think the run pretty close to size, but honestly have never bothered measuring. It will be another month or so before I put the Kojaks back on my city bike, so I cannot help you out at the moment. It must be a 65cm. You can tell by the location of the pump hanger, 1/4 length back from the head-tube. [RBW] Re: JAck Brons and Honjo 43mm?
I too have a set of Jack Browns under a set of Honjo 43mm fenders. Much better clearance than what I had with the 35mm Pasela TG's :) The Jack Brown Green is currently my favorite tire. [RBW] Re: 59cm XO-3 on ebay
Sorry if you all know about this one, but it's a group that somehow compiles all the cool BOBish bikes on CL and other for sale forums everywhere in the USA and updates daily. Handy! The 59 XO-3 is tempting, but I have a Hunqapillar on order, and it's only maybe roundabout 150 days away.
