Re: [RBW] need ideas for versatile touring/commuting bars other than rando/drops

2011-05-17 Thread omnigrid
I dont like being on non-drop bars for more than 30 miles or so, personally.
I did run a Jitensha bar for a little while...but they also hurt from the
lack of hand positions eventually.

I think I'd rather stretch regular and get more flexible than ride on
non-drops during a tour/brevet.

[RBW] Re: Hello folks

2011-05-17 Thread Joes Calendar
Hello Scot,

I'm fairly new to following this list and haven't posted before. I've
owned an Atlantis for about 10 months - love it! - and use it daily on
a 30 mile round-trip commute. I've taken it on a couple of short
tours and have a longer one planned for the end of June. The first
Rivendell I saw in person was an Atlantis on my commute the day mine
arrived at home. There was a guy riding it on the trail I commute to
work on and he had had his about 7 years. It looked as beautiful as a
new one.

I am located in Northern Virginia, but spend time in Clearwater fixing
up (just about done) the condo my parents lived in for many years, so
in about 2-3 years when I get my bike down there I'll be able to say
I'm from the Tampa Bay area.

thanks everyonei was reading on the north road bars and how
they're supposed to have a more natural wrist pronation angle than the
albatross, in how they slightly flair outwardsinteresting

trekking bars: why do they make them so darned wide however?
I would love to try a pair if i could get some narrower ones.

[RBW] Re: need ideas for versatile touring/commuting bars other than rando/drops

2011-05-17 Thread mike
Both VO and Soma have a few bars that are albatross like, but
narrower. Actually, so does Riv, the Dove Bar -- classic 3 speed
bars. Cheaper than Albatross too!

Soma has that Lauterwasser bar that's sort of half drop half
moustache. There seem to be a lot of choices to try!

I recently tried the Nitto u-shape bars "B-617 Promenade Handlebar".
Mixed feeleings about it. It's narrow - 45cm. I think it needs to be
either higher or farther away than is possible on this particular bike
so that my knees are well clear. It's comfortable on the grip
portion, or to grab it on the horizontal part near the stem clamp.
It's still a 'possible' for the simple-one that is hopefully coming
soon.

I like the albatross. I like drops too.

[RBW] Whole Lotta Things for Sale

2011-05-17 Thread Dustin Sharp
Hi everyone,

Time for some spring-cleaning and I thought I¹d offer things up to the list

Shipping prices are to CONUS via either USPS priority mail or parcel post.

[RBW] Re: need ideas for versatile touring/commuting bars other than rando/drops

2011-05-17 Thread Bill M.
Salsa Woodchipper, maybe? Very short extension and shallow drop,
which make the effective reach a few cm shorter than something like a
Noodle. The drops are quite flared, but I find them comfortable.

I find Moustaches on a too-long bike to be insufferable. I've mounted
and removed mine several times, and the most comfortable application I
found was on a bike that was actually a bit too small for me.

Or Soma Clarence. They don't have the forward position of the H bar,
but have the same back sweep. I have a pair on a non-Riv steel bike
and rode 64 miles on them today.

Wrapped the middle part of the bar to get a second hand position.

[RBW] need ideas for versatile touring/commuting bars other than rando/drops

2011-05-17 Thread Peter Pesce
You might try trekking bars. They can be configured a few different ways that
might help with your reach issues. Don't know what your commute is like, but I
personally like flat-ish bars for gnarly urban riding. Upright, high leverage,
mtb brake levers.
Kent Peterson likes flat bars with the Ergon grips that have the big bar-end
extensions. He puts on lots of miles. Even though the Ergons are expensive, the
flat-ish bar will only cost like $15, though you probably have one lying around
already. This might not be ideal if your touring needs are long road miles.
Just my 2c.

Re: [RBW] Re: need ideas for versatile touring/commuting bars other than rando/drops

2011-05-17 Thread andrew hill
i've realize now i've created the same sort of H-bars with Bullmoose bars and
mtn bar-ends slid down towards the middle (and covered in cork - my submission
for the cork postcard).

you can also reverse the direction of the bar ends, move them, etc., so that
give you more options, e.g. more narrow and forward gives you a aero tuck
almost, if you want it. wider gives you a comfy shoulder rotation from flat
bar.

prob work better on a narrower 150cm bullmoose (earlier). but they really
aren't as large as they first appear.

i'm also a +1 for mustache bars. i used reverse bar-end brakes with m-bars on
my Rom, but added dummy lever stubs for the "hoods" position to keep the hand
positions open.

best,
andrew

[RBW] FS: 2009 52cm Quickbeam

2011-05-17 Thread johnb
As part of the pruning of the bicycle collection, I am selling a two-
year old Quickbeam. Atlantis less than six weeks away...

Photos are http://www.flickr.com/photos/jbusteed/sets/
72157626621477823/">here.

Here is a link to the QB's geometry - http://cyclofiend.com/rbw/geometry.html
(Note they do not show the 52) My PBH is 78cm and this bike fits quite
nicely with the Col de Vies on it. While I would be happy to measure
the basics and you can ask me nitty gritty questions like what is the
head tube angle but I may not be able to provide the answer...

Again, it is a stock build (you would think after last week's sale I
would know exactly what is on the bike but no...)

Specs:

- 52cm frame
- Sugino XD2 crank set (40x32)
- White Industries Duo (17x19)
- Velo-Orange hammered fenders
- Col de Vie tires
- No saddle
- Grip King pedals
- Silver brakes
- Albatross bars/cork grips/Mt Bike brake levers
- Nitto stem (10cm?) /seat tube
- Mark's rack/basket

Price: $1200/OBO + shipping unless you are local to Baltimore/DC.

Bike will move to Craigslist in Baltimore on Thursday evening.

Bike has never been in an accident. Was ridden maybe 2K miles total
(550 in one week in NC in 2009). As noted above, happy to answer any
and all questions as best I can.

Very easy...Draino liquid gel. takes about 30 minutes to soak and
then hose it off. You dont want to let it soak more than an hour or 2
though. I did this to a black ano chainring and it looked factory
matte silver when I was done. I had to gently scrub it a little and
did it in 3 passes, soak, rinse/scrub, rinse, dry repeat. If you do it
right they will look factory finished.

You wont be able to do this with the bars but for smaller parts I used
a ziplock freezer bag to soak the chainring.

good luck

If there is a way to remove the black and return them to a nice silver/

used them they are worth a try.

Re: [RBW] Re: need ideas for versatile touring/commuting bars other than rando/drops

2011-05-17 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I successfully used Bell Laps othe Monocog despite the horrendous
effective tt length -- I think the effective length was 61 cm, fully
4 more than I choose for my road bikes -- simply by using an upjutter
stem and making the bars quite high so that the hooks gave me more or
less the position that I have on the hoods on my road bars. Not only
comfortable but I found I did not really lose any power (IME, there is
a certain back angle above which I lose some pedaling force). I use
Noodles on the Fargo, which of course does have my preferred 56- 57 tt
but which also has a much longer stem, simply by having the bars high.
Short arms, me.

[RBW] FS: Brooks B17 titanium black and trimmed (some call it butchered)

2011-05-17 Thread eflayer
FS: Brooks B17 titanium black and trimmed (some call it butchered)

This a nice condition used saddle that I had trimmed by a horse saddle
leather worker here in Berkeley. I am starting to sell my extra B17's
and this is the first on the list. You can see the leather tabs tied
underneath for extra support and the saddle has a brand new tension
adjusting bolt too.

I found it to be quite comfy and it can add a fine look to right bike.
I am willing to sell it with a 2 week money back guarantee. Just ship
it back to on your dime in the same condition you got it and I will
refund your paypal.

$135 shipped

Re: saddlesack. It's actually the Small!

Fully loaded, my rig was light:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/judah42/5701330998/in/photostream

The reason was that out of the three of us, Corey had the tent and
cooking stuff in panniers and a front rack as well as tarps and so on.
Thus, my personal load was light.

That said — I lean towards packing smart with minimalism in mind. I
based my kit off of Grant's "Kit for One Night Out" article. I didn't
have a tent, sleeping pad or cooking gear with me but I can't imagine,
having seen what those items were like in size, having to go bigger
than a Medium or Large Saddlesack. If you attach the pad, tent or
sleeping bag to the top of the bag behind you, as I did, or on a small
front rack, I still imagine that a Medium or Large Saddlesack is just
fine.

My gear inside the small saddlesack was plenty for an overnighter. I
had on some Outlier pants, an Icebreaker mid-weight LS top with a
Rapha jersey on top of that for the ride. In the bag, a gilet, a
Patagonia LS wool baselayer, a Patagonia down sweater (which is really
a down jacket that compresses to the size of a grapefruit but is oh so
toasty), Smartwool hiking socks for camp/sleeping, toothbrush/
toothpaste, mess kit, bandana, full toolkit (made up of small smart
bits) and spare bungies and ziploc baggies.

I could have used some room to tote food perhaps and I think a folded
mussette bag would work well near the end of a ride to pick up food to
carry on my back or small runs.

I think obviously you can go both ways — I've read and learnt from the
kit that Anne's posted in the archives and from others so you can
carry more for sure. It depends if you go solo or with a group. With a
group, you can distribute the load a bit more.

Looks like this weekend we're going to China Camp and I think I'll be
trying some new things... will report back.

Cheers!
Naz.

That's a nice mix of bikes you'll have. The first Rivendell I ever

[RBW] Re: silver shifter washers

2011-05-17 Thread doug peterson
Jason:

I did the same thing as you. IIRC you can put the "tab stop" (?) on
the pod side, away from the lever, in a couple of the 4 possible
positions. I happened to have a pair of the ones without the tab that
I used, but as said above, there are about a billion of those washers
out there.

FWIW, I installed the pods with the D-rings on the inside per
instruction. Next time I re-cable I'm changing them to the outside so
I can more easily cinch down the D-rings on the fly. I still haven't
discovered the magic combination of washers to prevent the D-rings
from gradually loosening up. They're supposed to be on the inside for
protection so there is a good reason.

[RBW] Re: First S24O to Sam P. Taylor with photos.

2011-05-17 Thread Mike
I carried everything for an S24O in a medium SS and a front trunck
sack last year. This didn't include a tent but I definitely had
everything that I needed. I realize what one needs can vary depending
on weather, comfort needs, food, etc... Still, I would think that a
Large SS could do the job.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/4945981066/in/set-72157613195465589

And even more minimal load was used on my first S24O back in 2007:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/1074699762/in/set-72157615006576577

And to the original poster, great pictures. Thanks for posting.

I camped out at Samuel P. Taylor many times when in Boyscouts and a
couple of times in the 80s when I went out there with friends and a
ton of beer. When I started cycling in the 90s I would often ride the
bike path through there but never had a desire to bike camp, but
now... if I was still in SF I'm sure I'd make it an S24O destination
along with Pt Reyes and especially Pantoll. Pantoll seems like a
really great destination for a weekday S240 with easy access to Peet's
in Mill Valley for coffee in the morning. Maybe even a little
excursion up RR Grade before heading to Peet's.

I may have to go bike camping tomorrow night as the weather in PDX is
supposed to be great.

I forgot to add that, OTOH, if you have a choice, Ron is perfectly

You can use a fixed cog on a fw hub as long as you don't skip stop
with it. I've done many cheap old 10 sp conversions with 65" to 70"
gear by simply redishing the rear wheel and installing a fixed cog
instead of the cluster; no lockring or locktite, just grease and
torque.

My brother was riding fast down a steep hill with such a conversion,
skipping merrily until the cog started spinning off backward; at which
point he pedaled really fast to get it screwed on again. But if you
avoid this -- use brakes -- you will be fine.

[RBW] Re: silver shifter washers

2011-05-17 Thread MichaelH
I would have sworn that my shifters came with both styles. In any
case I would expect any good bike shop, or Riv, has a pair of these in
its spare parts drawer, that not that rare since they were on
virtually every road bike, with bar ends, sold for many decades.
There's more than one size floating around out there and shops that
service older bikes are sure to end up with them.

My Saluki likes the Berthoud GB2886 (the fancy version of the same size
bag as the GB28) just fine. I like the way the bike rides with the bag
more than without it. Of course, I don't carry 10 lb in it, either.

How big does a bag have to be to qualify as "giant"? Would you consider
a bag like the Berthoud GB28 "giant"? (Volume : 12L, Height: 270mm,

This is a far cry from "pizza deliver guy" territory, and is a fine
example of a large front handlebar bag.

There's enough room for an O2 Rainshield rain jacket and eye glasses

have to take off my sun glasses or put on the rain jacket, I don't have
to actually park the bike to do it; just stopping with both feet on the

clearing up, darking and sprinkling again every five or ten miles all

L'allure francaise ... I bought my front loading Herse to carry a dog
-- hope to get a big front porteur rack shortly -- otherwise, I am
quite happy with rear loading. I have gone back and forth between
panniers and large saddlebags for 20 years but have ended up with the
former because of their greater flexibility and the ease of swapping
out large for smaller panniers (or none at all, occasionally).

Now that you mention it, the porteur rack ought to be great for pizzas
(as long as the dog isn't on the front, too). I never did figure out
how to carry a pizza in even a large pannier, unless it was frozen.

[RBW] silver shifter washers

2011-05-17 Thread jandrews_nyc
I should've read the posts regarding this before I purchased SIlver
downtube shifters to use with my Shimano bar end shifter pods.
As many of you know the shifters come with a round washer with a
square hole that has a little tab on it that acts as a shifter stop
when mounted on a downtube boss.
But..it seems nobody sells the round washers with the square hole
WITHOUT the tab.
I could grind it down, but does anyone know how to get the correct
washers without purchasing the bar end shifters?
thanks
