Re: [RBW] Shimano bar-end shifters & Albatross bars for commuting

2013-03-27 Thread Joe Bernard
To clarify, I think you would like indexed bar-ends, and I've had no
problem with 8-speed index shifters on a 7-speed cassette. Technically
there may be a very small difference in spacing between 7- and 8-speed
cogsets, but in practice it wasn't noticeable once the shifting was dialed
so that the derailer pulleys were perfectly centered under the 4th (middle)
position.

I left my house this morning with the intention of dropping off some
library books then rambling through Forest Park, getting some coffee and

I'm not sure what happened but soon enough I was back on the Old Columbia

Re: [RBW] Shimano bar-end shifters & Albatross bars for commuting

2013-03-27 Thread WETH
Dear Shoji and Joe, thanks for the response. I have a bike with stem mounted
shifters (friction) that I ride on the weekends. I have commuted with it, but
I did not like the uncertainty of which gear I dropped into nor the time I had
to spend with only one hand on the bar while navigating busy urban roads.
That in part could be solved by practice, but I am fairly set in my commuting
ways. I do however enjoy friction shifting on my weekend rides. In response
to another thread on bags, someone said (Jim from Hiawatha Cyclcery maybe?)
paraphrasing here: fit, utility, looks- pick any two and be happy. Since the
grip shifters function and fit how I ride when commuting, I suppose I should
leave them. I can adjust more quickly to the new twisting motion on the grip
shifts better than I could adjust to friction shifting. It's just those
bar-end shifters look so nice!
Thanks for allowing me to think this through.

In my experience, that's more likely to damage a handlebar than to
damage Shimano bar end shifters. It can, however, break one of the
Silver/Sun Tour Sprint shifters; happened to me.

I've indexed 8-speed bar-ends with 7-speed cassttes easy peasy, but agree
with Shoji that Silver Power Ratchets are the bee's knees for rifling up
and down a 7-speed. You never quite know which cog you're going to stop at,
but you almost always land right square on a good one. Try it for a while,
then go back to indexing. You'll be surprised how clunky and archaic it
will feel. In my opinion, of course...

2013-03-27 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Grant wrote a short piece in an earlier RR about TC factor-- "TC" for
tilt-control. My mind's paraphrase (which could be entirely
misrepresentative of GP's view), is that wider Q-factor is countered by
wider tilt-control, i.e., handlebar width. It's a leverage thing.

There's a lot of personal preference in bikes. Try to find what you like--
it keeps the shops in business and Nitto bending metal!

Hey Erl,
If you're comfortable with friction (from your downtube shifting days),
then you may want to go with friction for bar ends. You won't have to worry
about setting up indexing, which could mean a little more tweaking to make

[RBW] Re: Another All Rounder on the Bay.

2013-03-27 Thread hsmitham
Brad,

First really good looking bike and I like your set up. I don't typically
like yellow cause its so bright but yours at least in the picture and
viewed on my laptop display looks like a muted yellow which looks awesome!
I appreciate the confirmation of the original decals.

As far as the valuation on a repaint? I suppose it depends on who is buying
it and whether they care, or the pool of die hard Riv purest (The reason I
posed the question and you answered that) who would possibly de-value such
a deviation from its original format. As you said it's a bike and meant to
be ridden I tend to err on the notion that a few nicks are and it's
function foremost IMO which seems the case with the AR. I do like a fresh
paint job and new decals.

In the future when I have the financial capabilities I'll probably look for
one in my size.

Best,

Hugh

Ryan and Steve, thank you for your responses.
Steve, the bike takes a tumble on a monthly basis (I am a teacher and park my
bike in the classroom; at home the dogs and children manage to knock it over
regularly). In regard to index shifting on a 6 and 7, here is the product
write up from the rivendell site:"Shimano's best bar-end shifters, the
Dura-Ace's are indexable only with 9-speed cassettes; the Ultegras index good
enough with 6, 7, or 8 speed cassettes and both work with a friction mode,
tooso if the "good enough" isn't good enough, throw it into friction,
cowboy, and ride away. "
I will definitely have to make sure they are compatable with my 7 speed
cassette. Thanks again for taking the time to respond.
Safe cycling,

I hear ya, Dave (and have probably given you the same advice), but I just
don't have the budget for it after buying a Rambouillet last week. We all
gotta draw the line somewhere, and mine is at 1300 bucks for another frame.
Of course it'd be great if the seller came down to something I could
conceivably pull off, but I think it unlikely. I'm sure there's somebody

Hugh,

Indeed, my 96 AR has a "speared" Rivendell and no decals on the seat tube
aside from the Reynolds tubing designation. Actually it's pretty plain.

Here's a snap of the bare
frame

Interesting question you raise regarding possible "de-valuing" of a frame
by repainting it as I am considering doing just that. I dont like yellow AT
ALL but must admit some nagging guilt about removing an original paintjob
and more so the DT logo. That said, this frame will always be the 51st
Rivendell regardless of color. There was some lively discussion regarding
the repaint the very first Rivendell All Rounder from it's mythic pumpkin
hue to a black and royal blue scheme before being sold. Although it was a
striking combination and expensive paintjob, the general consensus was that
it had lost value of monetary AND historical sense. It was THE bike that
brought much love and admiration to the brand and was widely championed. I
have two favorite Rivendells of all time and it was one of them. In the end
though, it's just paint and riding the bike is what's important.

Yes, exactly. You can sweep the entire block, if you like.

What kind of "rough handling" could a bar end shifter get? Dropping the
bike on it? Beating it with a hammer? Ordinary shifting is in no way
"rough."

There is no one shifter set compatible with 6, 7 and 8. I've never seen
an indexed 6 and I'm not sure they ever existed. Indexed 7 speed bar
ends definitely existed, but they're quite rare now. You can get new
stock (possibly new old stock) 8 speed indexed bar end shifters on ebay
quite easily.

I've had similar very annoying experiences, and have always found a cause
located inside the tire: a slipping rim strip; a loose wire bead; a
penetrant stuck inside the casing and impossible to find just by looking at
the tread.

To paraphrase Dr Johnson, such an excess of flats is not in nature.

[RBW] Shimano bar-end shifters & Albatross bars for commuting

2013-03-27 Thread WETH
Background (may be skipped as it may not be fully relevant to answering the
question and is quite wordy):
I purchased albatross bars for a bike my son and I are repainting and building
up for him.  While waiting for him to select a frame color, I mounted the
albatross bars on my daily commuter (a Surly LHT with riv purchased racks and
Rivendell sackville bags).  I was running trekking bars with grip shifters,
which I liked well-enough for my 16 mile round trip commute, but I found them
less comfortable on longer rides.  I really like the albatross bars and am
considering making them permanent.  (I will have to purchase a 2nd pair from
Rivendell for my son's bike!)  However, my most aggressive riding occurs while
I am commuting; it is an urban commute on roads with buses, aggressive
commuters and clueless pedestrians.  I shift gears excessively on the 7 speed
cassette using the gripshifters.  I often am quickly index shifting through 6-7
gears as I rapidly approach a stoplight. (I stop at all red lights.)  I like to
start up from the easiest gear and up/down shift through the gears as needed.
Often, I am quickly shifting to keep pace with the traffic.  Given the heavy
vehicle traffic, I like to maintain as consistent/predictable a presence as
possible, which usually requires both hands on the handlebars.  I am
considering replacing the gripshifts on the albatross bars with Shimano bar-end
shifters sold by Rivendell.  The grip shifters feel and look a bit strange on
the Albatross bars--though they work fine.  However, I have never used bar-end
shifters, only thumb (index), grip (index) and downtube (friction).   If you
are patiently still reading, here is my question.

Question:  For those who use or have used  the Shimano bar-end shifters,
especially on Albatross bars, how easy is it to index shift rapidly across
several gears on the rear cassette?  Is it as easy as moving the lever up or
down the needed number of clicks? (On my gripshift, index shifting, one click
equals one sprocket change on the cassette.)  Are the Shimano bar-end shifters
durable enough to take somewhat rough handling every day?  (I think I have read
about a washer cracking easily.)  As I mentioned, I ride hard on my commute.  I
do not mean to insinuate that the shifters are not of good quality, it is just
that I am quite hard on my gear when commuting.  Hence, the Surly LHT with 26 x
2.35 tires.  Specifically I would be using the shifter set compatible with a
6-7-8 speed cassette.

As always I appreciate and always benefit from the individual and collective
wisdom of this group.  I apologize for the wordiness of this post.
Many thanks,
Erl

Yes, good points. You have to make some compromises to avoid TCO on smaller
frames. That's one of the big argument for going with 650B.

Jan has pointed out that bar width changed over time, in relation to
changes in steering geometry. As tires narrowed and trail increased,
bars got wider. He has also been very clear about his preference for
narrower bars with low trail bikes.

Depending on your definition of "narrow" that may or may not be the case
for other riders. I like 44 cm bars with my low trail bikes. I tried a
bike once (around a big parking lot) that had Grand Bois Randonneur
bars. I have no idea what steering geometry the bike had; I didn't like
the bars because they felt to me as though there was almost no room for
my hands on the bar tops.

Riding over a carpet of goatheads? A bed of nails? Otherwise, it's
hard to see how you could have so many flats... unless, of course,
you're having the same flat over and over again because you forgot to

FWIW, and it may not be much, I swapped my 46 cm Noodles, on the Fargo, to
42s and I was very surprised at how much more comfortable the 42s were --
just about perfect. I'm narrowish and just shy of 6'.

Unfortunately the Fargo sometimes sees modestly technical terrain, and
there is nothing but NOTHING more useless in technical terrain than a
narrow road drop bar.

Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar

2013-03-27 Thread PATRICK MOORE
This is interesting. FWIW, I have narrow Grand Bois (Compass Bicycles) Maes
Parallels on my two Riv Road Customs, and these are (IIRC) only 37 cm wide
at the hoods -- at any rate, the widest offered are 38 or 39.

I have absolutely no problem with control using these on relatively high
trail Rivs and it is without any question the most comfortable bar I have
used. I love them and would pay double the already high price for them.
(Note that their finish puts even the Noodles to shame.)

I don't recall having tried Rando bars, Nitto or otherwise -- wonder how
they'd do on the Fargo compared to the Midge (for which this latest hack,
of which {hack} the results are positive but not ecstatically positive):

https://picasaweb.google.com/BERTIN753/BIKESMISCELLANEA#5859423272048789282

The problem, again, being that, with the Midge, you can't position the ends
of the hooks parallel to Terra Firma.

I notice that the Nitto Rando (no longer carried by Riv, I see) has a
shallowish 122 mm drop and a med/longish 110 mm reach. The problem for me
is that the widest seems to be only a 41.

I am curious if anyone has found, and used, a Rando type bar that is at
least 44 cm wide at the hoods.

Re: [RBW] Re: Handlebar

2013-03-27 Thread René Sterental
The shape and curves of the GB Randonneur bar have made it the only drop
bar that I can ride with virtually no pain in my hands. I can't say that of
the Noodle or both Nitto Randonneur bars (the narrower and the wider one).
It's very comfortable both on the tops straight section, curved section and
straight section going to the hoods, which is the position I find myself
using most often. I've discovered that its narrowness on the tops also
makes it very comfortable, and have some sort of theory backed by purely
empirical evidence I've gathered by doing online research, that the wider
bars, which are presumably better to open the chest, compress the shoulder
blades and back, whereas the narrower ones don't do this on the shoulders.
Since I have no problems breathing, elbows can ge articulated and I have
many issues with shoulder and neck pain when riding, I noted right away
that after I got used to the narrowness of the bar, I wasn't having the
expected shoulder, neck or hand pain I used to always get with the drop
bars.

I also read somewhere in Jan's blog or magazine that narrower drop bars
work better with low trail forks whereas wider bars are better for higher
trail geometries. In my very early days with my Hilsen, I tried the
narrower Nitto Randonneur bar and found it uncomfortable and didn't like
how it made the Hilsenhandle, so I went back to the 48 Noodles, which I
still have on that bike. The Atlantis, where the current GB Randonneur
resides, handles very nicely with the narrow bars but it has a low trail
fork. My next step is to install the bars on the Hilsen to see how they
feel on the standard geometry, and if they not only handle equally well,
but also remove all the pain and issues that I have when riding the Hilsen
with the 48 Noodles.

[RBW] WTT: Nitto Lugged stem/cockpit

2013-03-27 Thread Alex Zeibot
Hey,
I have Nitto Lugged stem, 110 mm that I find too long. Anyone wants to
trade his/her 90 or 100 mm stem of same kind? I also have 48cm Nitto
Noodle bars and would like to exchange for 42/44cm or sell for $50. Both
in fantastic and near mint condition.
Thanks!
Alex

If it is in fact a 51cm frame built around 700c tires as noted (which
certainly looks to be correct, based on the proportion), and room for some
fat rubber per All Rounder definition, I'll bet the top tube HAD to be that
long - otherwise the TCO could have been horrendous. Not that there's
anything wrong with it... I think it's cool that it's so unique.

Joe, if that's your size (top tube is kinda' long for the seat tube, 51X54

you can get a serial #, shoot it by Riv's direction and ask if they can
give you any info. That should at least be able to confirm the builder and
year.

[RBW] Re: Another All Rounder on the Bay.

2013-03-27 Thread Joe Bernard
I got more info from Mike, most of which is now in the Ebay listing. It was
a demo Grant had in 95/96 after the customer returned it because he didn't
dig the low BB height. You can see the fillet-brazed chainstays used to
accommadate this design. Mike mentioned it might have been built by Della
Santa, which refreshed my memory on the early custom builders Grant used
during the transition from Waterford production Rivs, to the Rivendell name
being applied only to full customs.

During that time Della Santa, Richard Sachs, and Tim Isaac from match were
involved, and IMO one of them probably built this frame. It's an
interesting piece, and I dearly wish to acquire it, but I'm kinda full-up
on bikes now. A dilemma...

Some and oddly not all Shimano pods have a nub on the square that
interferes with the square-holed spacer that fits over it. If so, two
options:
(1) Dremel down the nub, a do-able pain, I've done it twenty times in the
early days;
(2) Cut out the square-holed washer so it fits over it.
Not quite plug-n-play, but that's life.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB bar end pods

Jim -- I'm interested in buying a pair of pods if you are selling them
relatively cheaply -- this for the Rambouillet.

Will your pods work with 7 speed-era Dura Ace dt shifters? I do have the
keyed washers.

LMK.

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: WTB bar end pods

2013-03-27 Thread Rich Lesnik
The Shimano pods need to be altered slightly to work with other DT
shifters. The raised square section (which receives the square-hole spacer)
has a half-moon "nub" on one side that needs to be filed down before other
shifters will fit properly.

Works really well. Have fun!

Great looking bike and easily worth the asking price IMO. WHat would you
pay to get that as a custom today? Double what is asked for. It IS my size,
but I'd have to sell something to live up to my "bikes cash neutral"

nice ride here. Reynolds 753 frame and 531 fork blades in that early

I'm thinking maybe Dirk wants to join in when it is just a little warmer.

Re: [RBW] Re: Saluki Shake Down Ride!

As you ride more, this will improve. Riding at a pace (no matter how slow)
that you can enjoy the ride in and the surroundings you ride through helps
immensely. The improvement curve on stamina is usually quick. Hills for me
are definitely different than flat. I use other muscles to climb than go
flat and I can tell when they are out of practice on the first hill!

Enjoy the bike :)

Hurting - only a little - just a bit dismayed by my lack of punch on the
pedals. It felt like I bogged down on every little hill, and the head when
on the 9 miles back.

Great ride! I love the stunning tones my bike gives from fenders and snow
continually working things out.

With abandon,

[RBW] Re: Another All Rounder on the Bay.

2013-03-27 Thread IanA
The US dollar is worth quite a but less though, at least compared to the
CAD$. In 1996, the Canadian dollar was worth about US$0.72. Now
its roughly at par. So in 1996 an A/R ($1575 US) would have cost north of
the border here CAD$2187. Now we would pay more-or-less the same, customs
and shipping on top. Even taking the devaluation of the US$ into
consideration, the A/R has held its value incredibly well (especially if it
makes $1500 at auction). The A/R is still such an interesting bike and the
fact that it lends itself to a simple 650b conversion just increases its
versatility.
