Thank you all for warm welcome.
In Japan, places of various climate, various landscape, various manners and 
customs, etc. are packed in relatively small area.
Also, there is a railroad network that covers most of the country.
So you can go ride in various beautiful & interesting places pretty easily.

Yes, they are compound curve fenders by Woodys Fenders.
I like them so much that all my 3 bikes have wooden fenders now.

Brian,
I have also been admiring photos of your Hunq and your harlequin wraps on 
Flickr.
I like to swap handlebars depending on where I ride.
My Hunq has shifters mounted on downtube, so I can swap bars in about 10 
minutes.

There's no Rivendell that's anywhere near as flexible as my 60 cm MAP
Randonneur (8/5/8 std diam tubing vs OS Riv tubing) and the MAP does not
shimmy.

I'm sorry to hear you are having this experience with your Sam H. I too am a 
60cm Sam owner. In fact, I've had two: first an orange single tt canti version, 
and now a double tt blue side pull variant. I have never experienced any shimmy 
or wobble on either. Actually, my experiencd has always been the opposite. The 
Sam H's have been the smoothest, stable-est, most wonderful bikes to ride that 
I have ever had the pleasure to ride. However, I have only ever had small 
saddle bags with light loads in them. One of my greatest pleasures during a 
ride is the ability, on a descent, to momentarily take my hands off the bars to 
open and take a pull from my bottle. I'm always struck by the frames stability 
at those times. In crosswinds even! No matter... I wonder if its possible that 
your particular frame could have an alignment issue develop for one reason or 
another? Maybe worth considering if you can't solve it moving things around. 
Maybe have your LBS check it out.

Great packing job for the train! I love it. If you are able/interested, 
could you post a photo guide to how you do this? I have no idea how my 
brain would handle a train ride (I might not be able to do much of anything 
for days after), but I would love to be able to travel by train as an 
option and have been a bit baffled by the need to pack the bike.

[RBW] Packing a bike for train/bus travel

Has anyone packed their bike for travel on Amtrak or bus lines? Tips and 
recommendations? THe whole process seems daunting (what to do with the box/bag 
while I cycle, how to handle fenders and racks, protect the derailleur, etc. 
I've no idea if/when I would travel this way (not sure how my brain would 
survive the train motion and and the laundry/perfumed scents of other 
passengers), but would love to have this as an option.

[RBW] Packing a bike for train/bus travel

Amtrak has their own boxes, and it's easy. Typically all that is required to 
prepare the bike is to remove the pedals and turn the handlebar sideways, then 
roll it into the box and tape it up. If the station has used boxes on-hand, 
they're typically free, but you might have to ask specifically for used. When 
you get to where you're going, remove the bike from the box and reassemble. At 
some smaller stations, the attendant will save your box for reuse on the return 
leg of your trip. Make sure the Amtrak stations you're using have checked 
luggage service!

I've found that bus line requirements are highly variable. Some will allow you 
to put a loaded touring bike, unboxed, in the luggage compartment. Others want 
it in a box of certain dimensions. And others don't allow it at all. Most of 
the time, the driver's discretion trumps the rules.

Years ago some dude on here had a shimmying Rambouillet. He apparently solved 
the problem by installing a thick, heavy thorn-resistant tube in his front 
tire. At the time, I thought he was a kook, but you never know.

I ride three largish Rivendells, a road custom (61.5cm), Legolas (62), and 
a Quickbeam (60). None shimmy, not one bit. A fourth early Allrounder (58cm 
for 26 inch wheels) is super flexible made from Reynolds 753 tubing. It 
doesn't shimmy either. The Quickbeam has a front basket and the Allrounder 
most often carries a front Acorn bag. Still no shimmy. Shimmy is mysterious 
but med-high trail designs such as Rivendells tend to limit shimmy. 
 
Back in The Day I raced on a Dave Moulton Fuso 58cm frame 
(for sale, make an offer! 
http://www.flickr.com/photos/79695460@N00/400396875/in/set-72157607471577085 ). 

Dave claimed his high trail design and short top tubes eliminated shimmy on 
his frames. It has always been rock solid. Jan Heine has posited that stiff 
chainstays in relation to flexible top tubes help minimize shimmy.

You know, I did have an alignment issue: I was hit by a car.

I got a new fork from Rivendell to replace the original, which was bent. 
The new fork is for side pull whereas my original was a canti fork.

I actually never thought of this until now, because with the new fork, the 
bike has ridden fine. (I've been riding the new fork for about a year.) I 
guess it could be that small imperfections in the rest of the frame may 
actually be causing the shimmy. I certainly hope not, but it could be. 

Another interesting story: My first Sam H. (2009 I think, first generation 
green) was a fun bike, but I always felt it was running slightly off true. 
I consulted with Riv and they said, "try riding on a windless day on a flat 
road without significant coping, eyes closed, and see how it feels" and 
etc. They suggested I remove saddlebag, any excess, to see if I still felt 
the alignment issue (it veered to the right). Well, I did all those things, 
and it still felt off.

I eventually returned it to Riv so they could take a look-see. Turns out it 
was out of alignment. Great thing about Riv, they apologized and sent me a 
new bike - this one the new orange.

I mention this because something one can't necessarily see with the naked 
eye can have such a profound effect on a bike's handling. With the first 
Sam, I just knew there was something off, although I couldn't place what it 
was (I'm no mechanic). I rode that bike for about 3 months, and came back 
from most rides feeling that it was a great bike, but...And since it was a 
new bike, I couldn't imagine it could be defective - especially coming from 
Riv. 

When I rode the orange Sam, it immediately felt wonderful. It was a real 
Ahaa! moment. "So I wasn't crazy after all, this is how it's supposed to 
feel."

I want that feeling back. I'm going to keep digging. I seriously hope that 
wreck had nothing to do with this issue, but I guess I ought to be a 
consideration. It honestly never occurred to me until reading your post 
because in other ways, it rides like a dream.

By the way, I'd be curious to know if you notice a different ride sensation 
between the single TT and double TT?

While you're investigating frame alighnment, it might not hurt to try a new 
headset. The standard issue Hillborne headsets are not the greatest. I don't 
think you need to hunt down an obsolete needle bearing headset, though. 
Something with cartridge bearings would be nice. Ask your lbs to face the head 
tube before installation.

Jeff,

I will try to find the camera this weekend and post pictures.  My wife and 
I have toured over 2000 miles with this setup.  I haven't found any 
problems, other than there needs to be a slight mismatch between the rack 
and the decaleur bar pins spacing.  This helps to keep the bag in place.

[RBW] The Shoes Ruse: Great cycling shoe for women

Hola Riv Chicas!

I've been wearing these shoes during the warm months for close to a year 
and thought I'd give 'em a shout out.  Clarks Faraway.  Since we're having 
the first 60-degree day since November (!), I pulled these nice little 
shoes out and remembered how great they are for bicycling.  You can wear 
'em for just regular shoes (they do, though, look a bit like hobbit shoes), 
they come in a couple different styles and leathers, have a good moccasin 
construction and comfy crepe soles, a low back and sides under the ankle 
bones so no rubbing while pedaling, and come in half sizes so you can get a 
nice fit.  Only drawback is that they're a bit pricey so look for them on 
sale.

I enjoyed looking at these photos.  So much eye wash, or as my coworkers 
used to say, bike porn.  The HBs and levers don't look as comfortable as 
modern noodles and more contemporary levers.  I was also surprised by how 
very short the straddle cables are.  I have posted Racers on my tandem, 
which are clearly modeled after the Mafac  and I set them up with much 
longer cables.

I repeat my suspicion of the head set.  If it doesn't need adjustment and 
you want a new one, I highly recommend the Cane Creek.

Thanks Bryan - It's 48/38 chainrings and a 21 freewheel on the rear. I went a 
bit big on gearing as it's hilly in these parts and I figure I'd rather coast 
down hills than walk up them! So far this has worked out - I've tackled some 
reasonable, if not truly epic hills and so far haven't had to walk up.

Hey thanks much, can't be happier with the color scheme.  The powdercoating 
didn't obscure the lugs at all. When I researched this I read a few people 
mention they told the 'coaters to do it lightly and such to preserve it. So I 
brought it up with the fine folks at Forever Powdercoating and they said it 
wasn't an issue. They'd done plenty of bikes and I have to say it looks pretty 
much just how the frame did with the original paint.  So I can endorse the 
powdercoating but no reason not to check with the 'coater about the thickness.

Bill, actually wasn't badmouthing your setup.  Lone Peak makes great bags - 
I have a pair of their panniers, and they made my first trunk bag.  The 
Alta has a bar clamp - if you're using it, you have the bag well secured at 
top.  My point was about using the Carradice tall rando bag on the VO 
integral rack with no other type of top support.

[RBW] Natchez Trace ride

My friend Ed and I decided to stretch out of our S24O comfort zone, and 
planned to ride the Natchez Trace, end to end.  We were camping, but had 
another friend willing to drive a support van for us, which ultimately 
turned our ride from an ordeal, into a positive learning experience.

We had weather delays, and ambitious mileage goals that caused us to 
shorten up to 300 out of 444 possible miles.  We learned a great deal about 
camping, cooking,  packing, and realistic miles per day, when on non 
rail-trail road rides.  Thank goodness for our support!

We met many wonderful people, including an Australian couple, and one of 
their friends, who were on day 45 of an LA to New Orleans, up the 
Underground Railroad route to Niagra Falls, and then down the GAP trail, 
ride to Washington Dulles airport.

My Hillborne rode great, but suffered a fractured rear rim, that wasn't 
discovered till I returned home!  Glad it didn't fail dramatically during 
the ride.

[RBW] Re: Natchez Trace ride

Grand adventure! Fantastic! Multiday touring is a whole different beastie 
than S24Os, that's for sure. We're doing a family destination 
camping/running/biking trip next week, which is another way to go too. 
Between locations I'll do an equivilant of a sag wagon day, then get picked 
up after they do the museums (which I can't do anyway for my bludgeoned 
brain) and go on to our next destination camp. A great way to travel with 
people of highly varied capabilities (kids, in this case), as it has 
something for everyone.

Maybe placement but I much prefer the feel of these old Super Record levers 
(close to Mafac proportions) to the modern.  The bars on this bike are what 
Riv used to sell as Nitto Dream Bars.  I think but am not certain these are 
close to what Riv now calls Mark's bars.

Absolutely!

We've done Inn to Inn type rides before, DC-PGH, out and back to Cumberland MD, 
etc., but this was my first primarily camping trip.  We learned quit a bit, and 
are thankful for it.

Hi John. Sounds like you have a lot of things you can try this weekend to try 
to solve your issue. In addition to considering getting your alignment checked, 
I would also suggest the headset too. The headset that Riv sent with my frame 
went indexed steering on me in short order. I wasn't comfortable taking my 
hands off the bars until I put a King headset on. Smooth sailing. Getting back 
to you on the single tt vs double tt: there are some nuances that I've noticed. 
Mostly it is a small degree stiffer. I run my tires a bit softer because of 
that. It's not issue-worth-mentioning really. On the plus side I find the bike 
easier to portage with the lower tt. The bike is more balanced as I run or walk 
with it. It's a nice feeling with the bike on my shoulder just holding the stem 
lightly with the same hand. The other hand free for balance while crossing 
un-rideable obstacles and such. The biggest deal for me was the brakes. I 
really didn't like messing with the canti's on the original. It seemed like 
every time I touched them it took me an hour to get them back into adjustment! 
I pined for one of Rivs bikes with the silver brakes on them. When Grant had 
that initial special on the "bleu" Sams I jumped at it. All is well now. I hope 
you can get everything set up to your liking with yours.

The handlebars on the 1980 René Herse are Cinelli 64s. As Matthew pointed 
out, Rivendell used to sell these as the "Dream Bars". For comfort, the 
older Philippe Professionels are much more comfortable. The Nitto Noodles 
are loosely based on those, and the Grand Bois Maes Parallel bars are a 
close copy. I wrote about this on our blog:

So in effect, we are going back in time. The first step was resurrecting 
the 1970s bars ("Dream"), and now we prefer the 1950s bars ("Noodle" and 
"Maes Parallel"). The main reason is that the 1970s bars were optimized for 
out-of-the-saddle sprinting, while the 1950s bars were optimized for long 
days in the saddle.

Rene,

We had originally planned 6 riding days, which in hindsight, was overly 
ambitious.  There was supposed to be a 100 plus mile day, a couple of 70's, 
etc.  Add in the weather, and we would never have made any of our planned 
camping arrangements.  I think the pressure of trying to 'make the mileage', 
and get to planned campsites, would have cut into the enjoyment of the ride.  
And that's what it's supposed to be about, right?  So with the luxury of the 
support van, we immediately dumped the 'got to get there' attitude, and enjoyed 
the beautiful Natchez Trace.

Many of our fellow campers were a joy to meet, and talk to, and planned AM 
departure times quickly vanished with the good conversation, and the extra cup 
of coffee and ginger snaps!   The vast majority of the drivers along the Trace 
were very courteous too.  Always a plus.

We learned to set reasonable daily distances to allow time to set up, not be 
rushed in our  personal preparation, and cooking.   Regarding cooking, I 
learned to love the new Trangia stove, and it's ease of use and versatility.  I 
made eggs, heated water for coffee, pasta dinners, and had planned on some 
breakfast oatmeal with honey until the raccoons got into the food(another 
lesson learned)!  Also, we learned to allow time to sightsee, and enjoy the 
company along the way.   We found out too, about advertised camp sites, like 
those listed on NPS maps,  vs available sites, like KOA"s and parks in nearby 
towns.  Also, that there's little privacy in a campsite if you're there with 
other people around.

A great experience, and I plan on enjoying more trips like this.

[RBW] Costco merino wool shirts for the ladies

FYI, my wife just picked up a couple REALLY nice thin 100% merino wool
v-neck t-shirts. $15, made in Canada. She said they don't have men's cut,
at least at our local one.

Ah. Yes, when I've done tours I've never pre-planned where I will camp, 
instead just seeing where the day takes me (or us, when I was with others). 
That's easier done in the forest where you can camp anywhere you set up a 
tent, so long as you have water.

The Katy Trail looks like a great next trip. Enjoy!

Not so.  The Nitto 176 is the Dream Bar.  I have 5 of them in service.
The Cinelli 64 is very different: for one thing, it's a shallow drop,
while the 176 is a medium drop; also, the ramp on the Cinelli is much
steeper.  I used one for 15 years on my Spectrum, and still have it.

Thank you! Excellent lessons!

I have a dream of one day doing one of these, hopefully with my son. Still
far from ready for it, both mentally and physically. One of my goals this
year is to get started on making that dream a reality, so I'm going on RBWs
S24O tomorrow and feel both anxious and excited about it. Unfortunately, my
son has Water Polo games and won't be able to join me.

I'm hoping I'll be able to do another one soon, and this time I'll bring
him along. Let's see how I survive the climbing tomorrow... :-)

[RBW] WTB - 52cm Sam Hillborne

I'm looking for a gift from my brother.  Hurricane Sandy flooded his house 
and sank his boat - he could use a little pick-me-up.   His primary use 
will be riding around town, around campsites and some trails riding.  I 
would consider any complete Riv that would fit him.  His PBH is 82.5cm. 

I know many of you are hoarding Rivs, there has to be someone looking to 
unload one.
