[RBW] Betty Foy and Red Brooks
You do raise an excellent point. I'm not sure how the B17 will ride, and I'm definitely not willing to swap for a less comfortable saddle. But I've seen lots of BF bikes with A-bars and B17s so they must work for some people. The biggest BF fan in the blogosphere (Dottie from Let's Go Ride A Bike) has one and her saddle/bar height look about like mine. I've submitted photos in this thread (but I'm new, so they are presently in moderation) and maybe you all could give an opinion as to whether the B17 might work for my setup. [RBW] Re: Where does the Rivendell Rambouillet fit in with other Rivs?
The Rambouillet will actually take 700x38 tires, without fenders of course--I know because I put a pair of wheels from a Cannondale hybird with very fat (IRC) 38's on my wife's Ram for the CO canal ride. Re: [RBW] Any advice for a Riv-friendly (roof) bicycle rack?
There are other options too Rocks for Tandems attach the front fork elevated above the rail, giving clearance for fenders. There are also the old style two piece systems that have a tray for the rebar wheel attaching to the rear cross bar, and a separate mounting point on the front cross bar for the front fork Ted On Saturday, May 11, 2013, René Sterental wrote: Hi Pierre, The only roof racks that work well with fendered bikes are those that grab the frame via the downtube. Re: [RBW] Re: Large SaddleSack Load and Anchor Questions
I have an SS Large on my main rig, but I have never lashed it down, it just rides freely on top of the rack. I use a Nitto QR with it, so it's really easy to take off if I want to. The only reason you need the rack there is for a little extra support for the bag.The bag doesn't sway at all as long as the rack is supporting it from beneath. Heavily loaded or empty, it's fine. I also lay my bike down a lot when stopped, sometimes fully loaded, since it doesn't have a kickstand. No problems with the bag, it meets the ground about the same time as the handlebars. Enjoy the Large Saddlesack, you will love it. Matt On Sunday, May 12, 2013 1:55:01 AM UTC-4, stonehog wrote: I'll second the zip-tie advice. I need to figure out some new attachment solution. I don't understand why one would use Irish straps to attach bag to rack. Irish straps are great, but where do you use them and doesn't it block the handy big opening? I take my bike on fire roads frequently. Those fire roads are either steep themselves, or found at the top of steep paved roads. So I go up and down steep roads all the time; the Atlantis and Saddlesack handle flawlessly. Weight up high has not proved to be a problem for me. The medium bag was fine unanchored but was excellent when attached to a Nitto Top Rack as it stayed in place. I imagine the large ones attached to a rack with zip ties or straps is similar. Re: [RBW] Betty Foy and Red Brooks
I ride upright with a- bars and I love the b-68 and b-68s saddles. The size and shape would be my first priority over color. Even if it was the same saddle and color was the only difference, I might still have a slight preference for the honey (all my b-68 saddles are honey). That said, you can only know if the b-17 will work for you if you try it. And personal style is well, personal. If the red floats your boat, go for it. One nice thing about this list is that if you decide to go back to the b-68, you'll find a buyer for the red b-17 here and it will go to a old home where it will be appreciated. Your pictures show a very comfortable looking seating position. I would ride with slightly higher bars, but that's just personal taste. Re: [RBW] Betty Foy and Red Brooks
One of the many great things about Rivendells is they are made to try many and various set-ups so you can find the one you like. I took over a year to get my saddle/handlebar position worked out. There are so many variables, I would change one (tilt of the seat or handlebars or slid the seat all the way back then forward, for example) and ride with it till something got uncomfortable (sometimes 30 seconds, a few times not until hour seven on day 3 of a tour), then I tried what I thought would fix it, and see it I was comfortable longer. I'm not at all mechanically inclined, so this was me getting to play in an entirely new space and it was grand fun. It's pretty dialed in now, and if someone snuck in at night and readjusted it all, I'd be able to dial it in a lot quicker than a year from now because I learned a lot about how everything relates to how it feels in the saddle. Go for the B-17 saddle. Play with adjusting it. Forward, aft, tilt, height, handlebar height, tilt. They all interelate. Shift one, and you think, Oooo. Now I gotta shift the saddle forward. swap it back and forth with the B-68. You'll have a grand time, and learn it's OK to play with your bike. She likes it. Grin. [RBW] Re: Large SaddleSack Load and Anchor Questions
Thanks all! This is very helpful. Mike, I will. I already know from touring how much weight I can take how high up. I could clearly over weight the large SS easily. I'll have to learn temperance. Grin. When camping I have some clothing, my tent, stove (Kelly Kettle), sleeping bag, and pad that go up there, that should all fit in with room to spare. Side wobble is my biggest concern, but I can snug the leather straps tight and with it anchored to the rack should be no worries. Carrying a load with a wimpy brain has a steep learning curve. And I have a way of taking shallow learning curves and making them steep. Grin. The main reason I'm getting the large (over my current small) is the small is too small for daily use in the Colorado highlands. Temp swings are often 40˚F or more (today it is currently 30 pre dawn, with a predicted high near 70 with possible t-heads). So my ride today, if my brain cooperates, needs a lot of clothing options and they just don't fit in the small. Jan's planaria is rando; RIV's is kind of classy hobo, but they're both practibo and in such similar ways, beautifo. Rando came in the '40s and no doubt had its own influences, but RHerse was at the center of it, and there were a few others (read Jan's book, omg, if I may!). CHobo bikes like ours wouldn't exist without those. Of course, there's nothing TO take away from the old Frenchies (as I call them, but I'm sure Jan has never), but because of the size of the bike-riding population today, Jan is himself more influential, and I'm one he's influencing. Periodically, while he's up there doing his thing and I'm down here doing mine/RIV's, we get tossed into the ring as antagonists, which makes us both feel weird, sinceit ain't like that at all. [RBW] Re: Just how dark do Brooks honey saddles get?
Thanks for the info and pics, y'all. It looks like it makes for unique, interesting, and beautiful wear patterns for each saddle and rider. Kinda like a sunburst painted guitar. It looks like it makes for a sunburst type coloration on a saddle. Very cool. Dark in some areas, lighter in others. You might think I am crazy to think about a saddle this way. But the aesthetics do play a role in the enjoyment of a bike. The colors make a mood and character of the bike. Just like the other stuff you put on it. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Agreed. The looks are very important. Makes the bike so personal, I think. My honey saddle is 9 months old, and I would say it hasn't darkened so much, but it is richer looking with age. I have treated it with Proofhide a few times and it really brings out a richness in the color. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Large SaddleSack Load and Anchor Questions
+1 for the leather straps under the bag to fix to the rack instead if zip ties. I use Carradice leather straps which are thinner and more flexible than the Acorn straps. No sway whatsoever, even descending rough rocky trails as proven on the last RBW S24O. Additionally, if you have the smaller of the two Nitto Large Rear Racks, you'll get no interference from the front of the rack under the saddle, since it goes well under the saddle as the frame is more inclined and thus, more parallel to the seat stays. The larger version of the rack is more vertical and the front of the rack is further back, which usually interferes with the bag and forces you to push it backwards which ends up tilting its rear upwards. Here is where strapping the rear of the bag to the rack really helps. It's not a show stopper, but you just wish the bag could be pushed further forward under the saddle IMO. On the larger Hunqapillar sizes and perhaps some other newer frames, the braze ons for the rack are places higher on the seat stays so the smaller rack fits perfectly. On my Atlantis I can't use the smaller rack. René — Sent from Mailbox for iPhone On Sun, May 12, 2013 at 7:44 AM, Mike mjawn...@gmail.com wrote: The SS large looks huge. Absolutely stunning views from the top'o'the hill. The Antelope Valley in one direction all of LA, right out to PV peninsula, in the other. We were riding thru the area devastated by the Station Fire in 2009, as evidenced by the burned trees. However, life is a tough thing Hugh got lots of good photos of Indian paintbrush, etc, that is blooming this time of year. [RBW] Large SaddleSack Load and Anchor Questions
Today's ride confirmed that the large SS is the way to go. I removed my small SS and just used the panniers, which have the same capacity as the large. But the panniers are a lot more brain energy to access and close up, let alone remember which side what is on. Thank you for all the input guys and gals! Interestingly, I found the xs SS works best for me on the handlebars. I had moved it to the saddle under the logic that nothing on the handlebars may be better than even an xs. Nope. The wee bit of weight is a good thing and doesn't mess with stearing at all. Much easier to push the bike up steep trails and climbing when riding is also easier -- I presume because the weight helps keep the stearing from getting too light. [RBW] Ride Report: Pikes Peak Continued...
Today I got to go out and complete the ride that snow stopped me from completing last week. Leaving my house, I climb up Mountain Avenue, a mountain residential road which mostly climbs to Mt. Ester trailhead. Mt. Ester trail is a 40 minute push the bike over rocks and roots and grades I preferred not to measure. At the saddle I turned right and soon passed my previous turn around point. Great single track! I rode this ride as if I were Whinny the Pooh on expotition. Lots of stops and enjoying the near absence of motors. Then it was on to the Pikes Peak access road, rather like a fire road, but for the maintenance of our reservoirs. Though 4/5th of the total distance, from here it was only 1/3rd the total time (estimating, I didn't track anything). Then it was a grand fast winding mountain descent on paved road down to Hwy 24 and even faster return home from just west of Woodland Park. All said, five wondrous hours of expotition on the bike! http://www.flickr.com/photos/32311885@N07/8733131222/in/photostream With abandon, Patrick www.MindYourHeadCoop.org -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Hugh, if you're in Portland next year definitely get in touch with me or Andy from this list. There's a lot of great riding just outside the city. [RBW] Betty Foy and Red Brooks
Several tangential thoughts in response to what's been said above... I have brain injury and constant neurological vertigo (among other fun). I hadn't ridden a bicycle (except for occasional trying to see how it and my vertigo got along) since the end of 2002. Late last winter, I tried a bike again. It worked! But only for a few tenths of a mile (a cheep folder my wife had). I wondered if a bike sized for me would work better. Borrowed a friends steel Schwinn and made it 3 miles before my brain said no further, knucklehead! Kitting our daughters for rides, I ended up with an old Trek that was too small, but we Rivendelled it up with Albatross handlebars and tires. Now I could go 8 miles. Was I simply improving or was it the bikes? I rode the Schwinn again. 3 miles only. It was the bikes. All this time I'd been researching and was impressed by Grant's approach and decided to take a leap of faith and get a Hunqapillar. I've spent many 6+ hour days in the saddle, done countless overnights and a few tours, one that lasted 9 days. The bike matters. Having said all that, I've no idea what my second point was (no short term memory is part of the fun). I'll post it separate if something jogs it loose. [RBW] Re: Any advice for a Riv-friendly (roof) bicycle rack?
Pierre, What Michael and Aaron said. Are you just determined to have a roof rack system? I have a friend who is in no way stupid but he has decimated two bicycles running the whole system loaded into parking garages. Of course both were covered by insurance but do you really want to go though the hassle of hoisting a bike up to the roof and or an insurance claim? I've had the Thule Thule T2 XTR - 2 Bikehttp://www.rei.com/product/816726/thule-t2-xtr-2-bike carrier it carried my Hilsen with long board fenders great. I later sold it because I sold my truck and bought a small Miata installed a receiver hitch myself and bought a Saris Freedom 2-Bike Hitch Rack which was half the weight, it works okay as it offers main support at the down tube and does not damage the paint. One caveat though it does take some fine tuning to fit two bikes well, but once you get the hang of it no problem. The Thule though if you have the vehicle is by far the easiest to use and my recommendation. ~Hugh On Friday, May 10, 2013 10:19:28 PM UTC-7, Pierre wrote: All, I have an outstanding hitch bike rack (Thule Euroway G2 923), but this option is now gone with our new car. [RBW] Re: Why is the Surly hub axle bolt binding?
How thick are your dropouts? Is it possible that you're bottoming out the bolt and serrated washer on the end of the axle that protrudes into the dropout before you're fully clamping the dropout? I use the same hubs on my Quickbeam with no problems, I have found that they don't need huge torque (i.e. more that can be easily achieved with a standard 5mm allen) to keep things in place. On Sunday, May 12, 2013 11:50:20 AM UTC-7, Patrick Moore wrote: I've got a hub like this one on the 03 Curt. You torque down and the bolt makes a loud, grating/creaking sound, then binds. I am scared of getting a flat and finding I can't remove the rear wheel. Wassup widdat? Must I go back to a nutted track axle? [RBW] TOC Overnight Camp trip May 17-18th
For those that are interested in watching 10 seconds of people riding their bikes really fast up a mountain. Doing an overnighter somewhere over Diablo. Planning on heading out from walnut creek bart around 6ish on Friday and riding the most of the mountain to get to our campsite. Camping somewhere and riding the next day to check out the race. [RBW] Large SaddleSack Load and Anchor Questions
On my Rambouillet, I found that fastex buckles work really well to secure the large saddle sack. Half the fastex is triple zipped tied to each Brooks saddle hoop. The other side is attached to the bag with short leather straps. The bag sits flat on a Nitto mini rack with a light nylon strap wrapped under the bag around the rack. Of course I can't see the bag when I ride, but it feels pretty stable. I've also used this setup for years with a Carradice Long Flap. [RBW] Re: Another casual Saturday ride in So Cal
Yes, it's a Nitto R26. Quite a bit different than the Big Back Rack that I got from Rivendell a few years ago. It's a couple of inches shorter and the platform is much narrower. The Big Deal is the second set of bars to allow mounting panniers below the platform. That works well. Since I don't use a rack trunk, the narrow platform is OK for me (so far!). At 3 wide, it's too narrow for most rack trunks such as Riv's loafers. The shiny chrome plating was a bit of a visual adjustment after years of looking at the soft gray nickel plating of the Nitto. My fashion consultant tells me the finish fits the character of the Atlantis to quit worrying about it. I did a 4 bag camping trip last weekend it has good heel clearance, stiffness, etc., all the things important to touring cyclists. dougP On Sunday, May 12, 2013 6:16:02 PM UTC-7, Jeremy Till wrote: Hey Doug-- is that the new Nitto rear rack that you have on your atlantis? [RBW] Re: Found the Elfin Magic
Dig this: Two of the Rivfolks communicated to me *as if they did not cotton* to short stems on a bike, which is surprising since they are usually into whatever makes you comfy. I was really surprised to even read a derisive comment from one of them about the aesthetics of a short stem. I was shocked!!! And *especially* from who's fingers the comment was typed! I love my Bleriot and Sam Hillborne but seems like their TT's are too long for me, so I have needed to shorten the stems alot. I use a 7cm stem ( and Noodles) on my Bleriot and a 6cm stem ( and 'staches for now) on my Hillborne (apologies to the folks at Rivendell for me using short stems). All I can say was I was getting some major pain that lasted for many days after even a shortish ride from my stock 8cm stem. The reach was too long for me. Went to 6 with a stache and am now riding in comfort. My back and neck like it so far. I will switch back to the Noodles eventually and see if it is indeed the stem that did the trick or if it was the staches. Either way - the stem gets me 2cm closer than before. The staches gets me 4cm closer than the noodles in the hood area. So seems like my body was insisting on a shorter reach. I guess we are more progressive then even the Rivendellians!! Let's pave the future for comfort with our short stem extensions!!! Congrats on finding a better stem extension. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Found the Elfin Magic
Dig this: A couple Rivfolks communicated to me *as if they did not cotton* to short stems on a bike, which is surprising since they are usually into whatever makes you comfy. I was really surprised to even read a derisive comment from one of them about the aesthetics of short stems. I was surprised to say the least. I love my Bleriot and Sam Hillborne but seems like their TT's are too long for me, so I have needed to shorten the stems alot. I use a 7cm stem ( and Noodles) on my Bleriot and a 6cm stem ( and 'staches for now) on my Hillborne (apologies to the folks at Rivendell. I love you guys and your bikes, but I wear S in suit jackets. I got a short reach/trunk. What can I say.). Maybe I am one of those peeps who could use a custom. All I can say was I was getting some major pain that lasted for *many*days after even a shortish ride from my stock 8cm stem. [RBW] Re: Betty Foy and Red Brooks
Thanks, Michael! I'd sure have taken you up on that if I lived close, but I'm not even in the same time zone! I'll be in touch with wallbike.com tomorrow and see what they say about the B17 after I send them a pic of my current setup. Wonder if this cherry Brooks will be so gorgeous that I abandon the comfort of my B68 in favor of shallow good looks... I am, after all, female, and have given in to beauty over function before... -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Very kewl. You cats are too much. Wish I could go 200 miles. Thanks for sharing those great photos. I like your spoke reflectors. [RBW] How do you like your Rivs on centuries or longer vs. your modern geometry aluminum/carbon road bikes?
I am interested in your take on how your rides develop over your centuries (or greater) rides on your Rivs vs. your modern geo/materials road bikes. Do you find yourself comfortable longer on the Riv's? Safer handling for when your are tired after great distances? Maybe no diffs? Maybe you feel that your conditioning determines your ride quality regardless of what you are riding? Interested in hearing everyone's subjective experiences. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Davis DC Workers Ride 5-11-13
I found the spoke reflectors at a nine show. They are slotted plastic tubes wrapped in 3M reflective tape that snap onto the spokes. Very highly visible at night. –Eric N Sent from my iPhone 5 On May 12, 2013, at 10:04 PM, Michael john11.2...@gmail.com wrote: Very kewl. You cats are too much. Wish I could go 200 miles.
