[RBW] Getting a Bike on a Plane

2013-07-12 Thread Esteban
Some SWA agents must be sustaining a myth about a $50 charge for a "bicycle,"
as I have had an agent say so once. I said, "no, it is within the limits and I
fly with it all the time on your airline." The manager came over, they looked
up the rule, and I was good to go. Maybe like in college "if my professor is 15
minutes late we can leave," which is a widely-held myth among undergraduates
but totally untrue.

Sometimes I have been asked and they have me sign a waiver. That's fine. I have
thought to respond "exercise equipment" or "push chair" but I usually say
bicycle because I know I am in the right in terms of policy. Totally +1 for
Skycap. Last vestige of the old way to fly before security lines, and TOTALLY
worth the few bucks tip.

The RB-1 is now at it's new home back east. The Miyata is still available.

The Stumpjumper Sport only drew interest without the saddle and cockpit, so
I've decided to re-offer it with a pizza menu buyback program.

1. Take the whole bike for $400 + shipping
2. Subtract the saddle. $350 + shipping
3. Also subtract the cockpit from 2. $250 + shipping
4. Also subtract the crankset, BB and pedals from 3. $200 + shipping
5. Also subtract the complete wheelset from 4. $120 + shipping
6. Also subtract the brakes and derailers from 5, leaving frame, fork,
headset and seatpost. $100 + shipping

I live in the East Bay, so no charge shipping for pickup or delivery in the
Bay Area.

[RBW] Synergy rims

2013-07-12 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
I've seen several complaints again recently about Synergy's cracking.
I had mine built about 2 years ago and they are fine.
Anybody know if the issue was particular to US or Aussie rims, or just
luck of the draw?
I decided to spring for hand built wheels (36 hole Synergies, XT hubs,
14/15 guage spokes) to avoid having to mess with them. I just checked mine
and they are a just little worn, nothing you wouldn't expect after 2 years
of daily use. Living over here, far away from reasonably prices shipping, I
do get nervous when I read stories about people having to replace them,
sometimes more than once.

[RBW] Re: Synergy rims

2013-07-12 Thread William
Everything I've read about the cracking issues has been limited to a batch
a few years back. Everything I've read that is current tends to agree that
they are great rims, except for the difficulty many have getting tires to
run straight on them. I have four sets of 650B synergy wheels in the
stable, and they are all fine and all over 2 years old, too.

[RBW] Re: Bent saddle rails

2013-07-12 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
Saddle is creaking so I called S-A. They very generously offered me a
discounted price for a new one, which I happily accepted. It's on back
order now which is fine with me. They suggested I try their new Truleather
this time, which is apparently longer lasting but less waterproof. I'll
report back here when I get a few miles in on it.

I briefly considered going back to Brooks B17 instead, and I realized
something. I had always thought the B17 could be a bit wider for me. The
S-A is 10mm less wide than the Brooks but it feels just right to me.
Clearly there is another factor besides width at play. In any case the S-A
fits me and I will be happy to have a new one.

The broken one was getting close to the end of its tension screw anyway,
after too short a time (18 months). Hopefully the new (and improved) one
will last longer.

[RBW] Tightening the curve on fenders with arc too large for the wheels.

2013-07-12 Thread Patrick Moore
I bought and installed a pair of PB Cascadia fenders, I think they're the
45 mm width, on the '03 Riv yesterday -- slow day at Stevie's, and I
decided paying full $39 pop instead of taking my discount allowed me
ethically to install them at the shop. They work fine, but of course their
natural arc has to be tightened to fit closely over the 559X32 wheels. This
leaves a noticeable bulge in the front fender just aft of the crown.

Is there any way to get rid of this bulge? I have to admit that the motive
is as much aesthetic as practical -- and no doubt as much pathological
neat-mindedness as aesthetic.

I have thought of:

1. slitting the edges, letting them overlap, and then gluing.
2. clamping: using the rear's plastic seatstay bridge mounting clip (with
the tab cut off) as a sort of brace/stiffener.

Other ideas? Comments and advice? ("Go boil yer head!" "Get a life!" "Yeah,
shut up, already.")

These fenders will stay on only during our brief seasons of precipitation
-- otherwise I would have tracked down a nice set of metal fenders.

Request: regarding #2 above: I tossed said clip yesterday, so if this is
workable I'll need another. Anyone?

Too bad that the nice pair of SKS 700cX35s generously donated by Ryan
Watson were too narrow for the Kojas, but they will do well for the Ram
with its Parigi Roubaix.

Oh, and this: The '03 Curt-built has the very carefully arranged clearance
allowed by "normal" reach brake arches, so that there are at least 3 and
probably 4-5 mm of clearance at the tight spots under crown and brake
bridge, this with 559X1.35 Kojaks that measure 32 mm on the narrow Sun
semi-aero rims.

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Classy bottle

2013-07-12 Thread Zack
In my experience the bottle itself doesn't impart any taste. If I have
coffee in the morning and just rinse with a tiny bit of water (like on the
road) it has a faint hint of coffee. If I have coffee and then wash it out
with a little dish soap and water, it is totally taste-free.

At this point though, I am not too worried about fender line. I just want
to ride and not have the tires rub the fenders. So now I just adjust
them for function not looks. Too hard to get them just so. But I do wish I
could get that front fender nose clearance tight.

Re: [RBW] Chris King Headset

2013-07-12 Thread Brewster Fong
Agree. What made CK's reputation was it was one of the first to use and
probably more importantly *market* angular cartridge contact bearings. I
know when I bought my Calfee back in 1997, there was only CK and Cane Creek
who offered this option. Neither Campy, which was my first choice, nor
Shimano which also had angular cartridge bearings, made a threadless at
that time. The CK was about $100 and the CC was $80. I bought the CK and
never looked back. Further, CK was one of the first to offer anodized
colors and you could make your headset have multiple colors too! This was
all the rage back in the 90s when anodized cnc parts were in fashion. That
it is made in the US is the icing on the cake! Good Luck!

[RBW] Northwest Roadtrip with bikes

2013-07-12 Thread franklyn
A couple of weeks ago I asked the list for some suggestions on places to
ride for my Pacific NW roadtrip. We ended up staying twice in Portland with
a 3-night bike-camping trip in the San Juan Islands. It was great.

We didn't get out of Portland for any ride, but rode all over town for the
total 4 nights we stayed. On the islands we stayed at Lopez and Orcas, and
visited San Juan Island. The ride on the west shore of San Juan, and on
Orcas were spectacular, especially riding from Eastsound to the top of Mt
Constitution in Moran State Park. Here are some pictures from the trip. We
both rode 650b-wheeled bikes, where my wife carried her load on a tubus
rear rack on her 82' Trek 720 and I carried most of the load upfront on my
Sequoia with a kogswell low-trail fork. Both bikes worked great as touring
bikes. I saw David's (cyclotourist) flickr pictures on his visit to
Portland and am a little envious he got to ride with some folks around
town, but we had a good time. Next time!

Re: [RBW] Chris King Headset

2013-07-12 Thread Matthew J
I like CK headsets and have used them on a number of builds over the years.
But the loud logo even in the soto voce and Ti versions does not move me.

My last three builds have silver Cane Creek 110s. Also made in the US.
Pretty darn lovely in my opinion. Silver version the logo is all but
invisible. So far no issues three years in my CC phase.

[RBW] Bikepacking with kids

2013-07-12 Thread Deacon Patrick
My eldest daughter (12 1/2) is interested in joining me for doing a section of
the Colorado Trail (high alpine single track), the plan is to travel 10-15
miles a day (necessitated by water locations in some instances) and be
surprised if we want/can do more. We have easy outs multiple places along the
way, can turn around whenever, the ability to camp in one place for multiple
days, so a lot of flexibility to go as fast or slow as she wants however short
or long she wants. I'm putting her in charge of all decisions for the trip (how
far we go, where we stop, etc, so she will need to manage water and our energy,
take into account timing of afternoon monsoon boomers, etc.)

My primary goal is to make it a wonderful, fun, enjoyable experience for her.
How far we go, how long we are out do not even matter. She's done two nights
before, in addition to family car camping, but the touring aspect will be new.

She will be bringing art and writing supplies, we'll share a three-person tent,
I'll carry everything but her clothes, sleeping bag, pad, water, and immediate
food, so I'll be slowed down a fair bit, possibly down to her pace.

Wisdom from those who have gone before me? I'd love to hear it.

With abandon,
Patrick

I'll screw up so you don't have to! Grin. All the hard learned advice I
have is pretty much in my original post: go their speed and distance. The
adventure itself will push them, so no need for some arbitrary, imposed
pushing by me. We've worked up over the past year to her being able to do
these kinds of distances, but I've never biked this trail, so we'll be
exploring it together. I'm hoping she gets drawn into the "what's around
the bend" syndrome and wants to keep going for more than the 4-5 days I
need to be gone to avoid a loud town event.

away and I don't drive for short trips and seldom drive for much else, if
the destination and route is bike friendly I ride whatever bike fits the
task. Hardware store runs usually require the Xtracycle and more often than
not require wide loaders. Instead of loading both sides of the X with
empties I hitched up the trailer. Since I built the X the trailer has been
sitting idle so I wanted to see how it worked with the X.

Other than getting a few entertaining looks and a little kid telling his
mom he wanted one pulling the trailer was pretty uneventful, I did notice
the absence of the second tank on the return trip. I have to say having a
cargo bike is really convenient and with 2" Big Apples it is my errand bike
of choice.

Here's a link to see the set up:

I keep thinking of the possibility of a Riv long tail...

[RBW] Conti Tour Ride 650B x 54

Anyone riding these? I am interested in some feedback on them. I am
looking for a good all around tire. It will be used on light trails as well
as the road. Probably the road 80% off the time. (But not fast road riding)

I have them on the Bombadil right now. Using the bike as kid hauler.

They are stout. No buzzing or anything annoying. I have had them on fire roads
a few times and they were good.

No complaints about them - they seem like decent all around bike tires. I think
they are measuring about 47 on the Synergy rims.

Hope this helps.

Currently my build is set to come with the Schwalbe Marathons which I think
come out to around 38mm. They are actually heavier than the Conti's. I was
just curious as to what people thought of them. The Soma B Line remind me
alot of the Col de Vie tires which I used for a long time. They are nice
but I was looking for something a bit fatter hopefully. I am not a fan of
skinwalls anymore for some reason.

One suggestion: if you find a nice place to camp, don't be afraid to stay
there. Instead, take a day ride or two and go back to base camp. Sometimes
it's nice not having to pack up and go some place. It'll also give her time
for her art and/or writing.

Happy camping, Patrick.

(We're off for car camping later this weekend. We'll go to the swimming
hole, take a hike, go to the playground, or probably spend a lot of time
picking up sticks and rocks.)

For pedals, I use MKS Touring, with or without toe clips - never-straps.

I am so glad I stopped using clipless pedals. It is fun to just jump off
the bike and walk normally. And I don't have to pay a fortune for shoes and

[RBW] Portland Bound

2013-07-12 Thread Adam
Greetings Portlanders,

My wife and I are currently traveling around the San Juan islands on her
Atlantis and my Hillborne. I wrote the list some time ago for recommendations
about our journey and a few Portland locals suggested getting together while we
were in town. We still have a week or so on the road, riding primarily through
the cascades between here and Portland, and I thought I should throw out a
potential time to meet up. Our plan is to arrive in Portland sometime around
the 18th. I was thinking it would be great to grab a beer with some of you good
folks on the evening of Friday the 19th. I've heard Velo Cult is a great place
but am open to other suggestions. Anyone game?

Warmly,
Adam

[RBW] Re: Bikepacking with kids

2013-07-12 Thread dougP
Patrick:

I think you've already got this wired about as well as can be. Letting her
set the pace, pick the spots, etc. That's absolutely key with kids, and
you've already figured that out. The rest of us can learn from your
experience.

FWIW, my eldest daughter (age 28) lives in the midwest. On a whim, my wife
went to visit her this week. A few minutes ago, I got a phone call
reporting that they'd done a 41 mile ride in the Indianapolis area, based
on a book that she had of Indiana tours. Neither has ever planned a bike
ride, but they've both been with me innumerable times. The moral of the
story is: raise 'em right & they'll become self-sufficient. Fast forward
10-15 years & your daughter may be planning her own trips, & if you're
lucky, she'll invite you along.

You two will have a wonderful trip.

[RBW] Re: Tightening the curve on fenders with arc too large for the wheels.

2013-07-12 Thread Michael
I don't know if any of this applies to the situation but here goes:

1.Are you mounting the fender tab in front of the crown? If not, try it, and
that may take up a few CM's of fender slack to help flatten the bulge. If you
are, try it aft.

2.Could you try mounting the fender with a sliding bridge? Then you could
really move that puppy right where you want it, letting the slack get taken up
both in front and behind the crown.

3. If the fender is plastic, heat that puppy up with a blow dryer/ heat gun and
just bend it to shape?

[RBW] Re: Tightening the curve on fenders with arc too large for the wheels.

2013-07-12 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
Never tried this before as I have 26x2.0 on Cascadia fenders and they fit
somewhat nicely, but Cascadia fenders are polycarbonate. Back in the day
when I was still messing around with 1/10 and 1/8-scale RC cars, the bodies
were polycarbonate and we used to use a hairdryer to soften them, so as to
shape them. Maybe you can try that with an industrial heat gun?
