[RBW] A weekend in the Methow Valley

2013-09-22 Thread Cecily Walker
A group of 7 friends and I took a long weekend trip to the Methow Valley in
the North Cascades of Washington. Long before I got a Betty Foy, I dreamed
of riding single track, but couldn't find much locally that wasn't very
technical trails that required mountain bikes. My friend Kay, a seasoned
mountain bike enthusiast, ensured me that the blue trails in the Okanogan
National Forest would be a piece of cake for the Betty Foy, and she was
right.

Here's a map of where we rode:
http://www.mvsta.com//images/sunmap_summer.jpg

It was my first time doing riding of this sort, and it took some getting
used to. The trail was a mixture of large loose gravel, sandy soil, mud,
and pine needles over hard packed dirt. To make matters worse, the
osteoarthritis in my right knee really flared up a couple of days before
the trip, and unfortunately the cortisone shot I had the day before my
departure didn't do much for the inflammation. I was undaunted though.

Friday morning dawned cool with cerulean blue skies with nary a cloud in
sight. The layer of cool air was fairly shallow, because by the time we got
our bikes unloaded from the car, things had warmed up enough for me to go
on without a jacket.

We combined the Beaver Pond and Rodeo trails to do a loop around Beaver
Lake. I had some trouble finding the right gear to match the ground
conditions at first, but after about the first 20 minutes I seemed to get
the hang of things. The only times I had to get off my bike were to push up
a couple of short, steep inclines I didn't change gears quickly enough for,
and to scale down a "rock garden" incline that Kay thought might be a bit
much for a novice rider on Soma New Express tires.

Because I got out to the country and put the Betty Foy through her paces, I
feel as if I'm finally a part of the Rivendell club. I'm sad to say that
the summer single track season is rapidly coming to a close, but there's
always next year!

Here are a few photos from the weekend. We stopped a lot on the way to
Winthrop, and were particularly taken with the views from Washington Pass.
There's a photo of me riding singletrack in the set from the weekend:

[RBW] Re: San Diego Bay Ride

2013-09-22 Thread hsmitham
Curtis and Tom,

Yes I'd like to do this ride very much. I've ridden parts of the ride you
did Curtis but not with Coronado Island and ferry thrown in. Any pics while
on the ferry? I haven't seen any on Flickr as of this post.

Thinking of an S240 in mid to late October say the 18th & 19th though I may
come down October 16th thru the 19th I'd like to do a S480 but hey an
overnight will do. Here's what I'd like to do. Drive to Julian ride the
bike up to Mt Laguna Approximately 35 miles by way of Hwy 79 through
Cuyamaca to Old Hwy 80 connecting with the Sunrise Hwy and Camping at
Laguna Campground or Burnt Rancheria Camp, then the next day ride the 20
miles down the Sunrise Hwy to Julian for Apple pie. Or Camp in Cuyamaca
then camp up on laguna and return to Julian. Anyway that my notion, I do
need to visit with the parents but I'm going to squeeze this in some how.

Best,

~Hugh

Shawn G is right. I have Amtrak'ed to Whitefish with a bike, and it is as

meant getting to my hotel a block from the station at 3am.

[RBW] Campy Only!: Ride to Bridge of the Gods, 9-19-13

2013-09-22 Thread Eric Norris
Well, I made it to Portland and put in about 95 miles on Friday, riding from
Troutdale, OR, into Washington state, then up the Columbia River to Bridge of
the Gods and back on the Oregon side. Photos prove it happened:

http://campyonlyguy.blogspot.com/2013/09/ride-to-bridge-of-gods-9-19-13.html

Some very nice scenery on this ride ... once I was able to escape the greater
Vancouver, WA, area. Old Hwy 30 on the Oregon side, with its multiple
waterfalls and general lack of cars was especially nice. Stopped at the bridge
and had a yummy piece of marionberry pie in the local diner. Also bought some
totally delicious smoked salmon from a Native American couple who caught the
fish themselves in the main stem of the Columbia.

Got rained on for about 20 miles in the dark, but all in all a great day on the
bike.

[RBW] Re: Barefoot Friendly Pedals

2013-09-22 Thread Edwin W
Maybe my feet aren't that tough, but I don't like the sneaker pedals that Riv
sells with no sneakers on! But I love them with shoes or flip flops. Not
enough flat surface. The Ergons look good and pricey. Harris Cyclery sells the
good and cheap ones that look like Raleigh's from the '70's rubber platforms
with reflectors.

I'd have to either spread or cold-set the rear spacing and I'd like to keep

The rest of the drivetrain would be fine. I went from a 50-42 Campy Record
crankset to a 53-39 Shimano Ultegra 9-speed crankset to get some lower
ratios and I run a 9 speed chain.

rest of your drivetrain would take that, wouldn't you think? Or, if you've
stockpiled a bunch of 5-speed chains and want to stay period, they built
those cassettes out of contemporary ones, so you could mix and match the
cogs you want. Their 14-24 five-speed is probably a 14-16-18-21-24 and
your 14-28 five speed is probably 14-17-20-24-28. It's a little work, but
if the lack of rear wheel options has been keeping your fine Jack Taylor
unridden, this has got to be a welcome development.

[RBW] 120mm cassette hubs

2013-09-22 Thread Bill Lindsay
Compass Bikes just posted the availability of new Grand Boris branded 5 and 6
speed cassette hubs for 120mm rear spacing. That's a pretty exciting
development for a lot of folks. They have the cog sets as well. I hope the
freewheel hoarders aren't angry about it.

If I understand the manufacturing relationships, we'll probably see these hubs
under a couple other labels as well

[RBW] Re: Barefoot Friendly Pedals

2013-09-22 Thread Deacon Patrick
Wonderful to hear, Pam. I've wondered about the Grip Kings. I presume the
ball of your foot is down in the concave slope, toes resting on the
top/front grips? Or are you midfood pedaling? I midfoot pedal. My feet are
12 , so gorilla's get envious of these beasties. Grin. VFFs never
worked well for me, though it took me running 200 miles in them to figure
that out. I'm THAT thick. Here are a few pics to show pedal placement:

I "toe clench" to avoid toe flossing by brambles and grasses when it's
narrow trail.

Och! What a blessing you guys are! Thank you. Philip, I will send them your
way so you can see what you can do to revive them once I have a pair that
works at least as well. I feel better knowing they will be in your hands
than a machine shop I just wander into in Colorado Springs that may or may
not understand pedals. Between the leather clad VPs and Eric's so very
cherry pedals, I am hopeful! Will coordinate off list once I'm at that
point.

Thanks, Ian. Multiple posts appreciated for the thoroughness they bring.

Per Riv recommendation, I removed the dust cap and tried tightening the

[RBW] Re: Wobbly pedal fix ideas?

2013-09-22 Thread IanA
Assuming this is a loose bearing pedal, there should be a cone and a lock
nut - the same system as a loose bearing wheel hub. First, loosen off the
lock nut, then turn the cone to the desired setting then tighten the lock
nut. The lock nut will cause some additional binding/pressure on the cone,
so the trick is to have the cone a little looser than spot on as the lock
nut will effectively cause the slack to be taken up. This part is a matter
of trial/error and feel, but with some patience, you'll hit the sweet spot.

If, when the lock nut/cones/bearings etc. are all correctly adjusted and
there is still a wobbly feeling, there is the possibility that the axle
itself is a touch bent. With the pedal disassembled and the axle in hand,
a practiced hand can tap the axle into true using a vise and a slight tap
of a hammer. Hopefully, the adjustment will take up the slack and the axle
is perfectly true.
