[RBW] Re: My Nitto S-83 doesnt fit Brooks rails

2013-10-11 Thread grant
Over the years (but not in the last ten years) we've gotten back half a
dozen Brookses that didn't fit Nittos, and it was never the Nitto, they
were always off by low single-digit millimeters, and always fell into place
with a little forcing at the beginning. Although I speak their language
better, when it comes to QC and precision, I'd vote for a forged Japanese
part over a hand-fitted British one...generally.

[RBW] Re: The Mysteries of Bike Assembly

2013-10-11 Thread hsmitham
Michael,

Very insightful regarding all those points especially the funnel shaped
entry point and cable size. I suspect some would say the derailleur cables
needs to be a smaller diameter so the cable flexes a bit more especially at
the rear with all the curves. I'm just guessing here as I am no expert.

The Trek looks fantastic! Isn't this the second Trek you've brought back to
life? Anyway good job and enjoy the trip to the City in the West.

[RBW] RBW cork bar tape work good over gel strips?

2013-10-11 Thread Michael
I have Specialized Bar Phat gel on my Sam Noodles. But the tape is getting
worn.

How is the Riv cork tape? Wide enough and flexible enough to wrap over bars
with gel pads on them?

Anyone got pics of their bars with the RBW cork black tape on it?

Thanks for any info.

I simply don't need the waterproofing, just the size and the wide,

[RBW] Re: Off pavement riding

2013-10-11 Thread Patrick Moore
Forgot to say, a propos of Stan's: I've been skinting on the amount I put
into the 29er tubes; 2 oz instead of the 6 oz or so I hear Stan recommends
for tubeless 29er tires. At any rate, today's ride took me through the
usual meadows of goatheads, with thorns momentarily embedded before they
are thrown or pushed out of the tread as one rides.

I had to pump the rear tire twice -- + a third anticipatory time -- on the
10 mile return, but as of right now -- 2 hrs after the last pumping -- no
air loss.

The Lezyne "Alloy Drive" -- the fatter one -- is great for fat, low
pressure tires. 120 or 150 strokes serves to bring the FFs up to what my
educated thumb tells me is 30 psi.

I have s Smartwool merino medium weight jersey knit crew has been my most
used piece here in Pittsburgh. It starts the season under a short sleeved

alone if all things are right, then in the worst cases I put the Expedition
Weight over the merino crew then the jacket. Commuting in the predawn and

adjust for precipitation, accumulation, wind chill and other nominal
potential discomforts. Looking a bit like a time capsule, but heck, the

If some of this stuff would just wear out I could justify looking around at
some of the newer, more wooly things. Good news is that I don't look like
some peloton domestique who missed the team bus if I wear any of it

[RBW] Re: The Mysteries of Bike Assembly

2013-10-11 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Michael,

Congrats on your new build! I'm quite fond of the older Trek's myself and
converted what I believe to be a 1982 715. I'd considered the Bilenkey
S&S, re-paint route as well but I was able to get side pull's that reach
the 650B rims. My 42mm EL Hetre's just barely fit, getting the stays
crimped a bit is something else I'd have done if I went the route of major
frame work. What a cool bike to have, seems like you've given it a new
lease on life!

On the mysteries of bike assembly you bring up a bunch of amusing and
common sense points, looks like you made it work!

[RBW] Re: Sweater/Top recomendation

2013-10-11 Thread M D Smith

My all time favorite "sweaters" are the lightest weight (200g/m) zip neck
"base layers" from Woolpower. They are out of Sweden, I believe, but there
are a few places that sell it on the interwebs. Most of mine were
purchased from Granfors Bruks (lately "famous" in these circles for making
the axes that Rivendell seems to be so besotted over these days...)

http://www.woolpower.se/en/

http://www.woolpower.se/en/products/base-layer-garments/zip-turtleneck-200/

http://216.147.25.196/klar.html

They are almost ethereal: a woolen version of Mithril, if you will. Not
the cheapest thing you'll ever find, but worth every penny. Super
lightweight, breathable, and, if I say so my damned self, quite pleasing on
the eye. I wear one over a regular old T shirt just about every day from
October until April.

NB: I have one of the 400g/m sweaters as well and it is just too dang warm
to wear in anything but the most frigid of Scandinavian wind storms. That
one, covered by a rain/wind shell, is as warm as any winter coat I have
ever owned. And I live in New England... The 200g/m is a perfect garment.

[RBW] Re: 50mm tires

2013-10-11 Thread Mike Schiller
Hugh, I know Patrick loves his FF's but those are seriously lightweight
tires made for off road racing on hardpack. Minimal tread and super thin
sidewalls + flats and tears. The Big Ben's will cover almost all the
riding you will do off road I think. I would get the Supreme's or the new
Marathon Deluxe for road touring if it was me.

I have a pair of the mustache bars for sale on this list (see the sale

have their advantages - the mustache is definitely the more aggressive bar
of the two, but less aggressive than being in the drops on a drop bar. The
albastache is more of a gentlemen's bar - more David Niven than Hulk Hogan.

Hugh,

No problem! The more information we get the better.

Congrats on the 56cm Atlantis. Of the production bikes out there, that
would be my first choice and if I had a chance to ride one and like it a
lot I might even choose it over the custom frameset I plan to have built.

The 820 is a tank and the knobby tires drive me nuts but it's still a fun
bike to ride! I've never ridden 26" wheels and trying them out was my
primary reason for buying the bike. I'm now pretty committed to 26"
instead of 700c for my custom. I can't imagine how fun a lighter and more
responsive version of this bike (as I assume the Atlantis is and my custom
will be) would be.

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Raceguard vs. Kevlar guard Big Apple tire performance

2013-10-11 Thread Joe Nelson
I would also like to know.

The website says the following which isn't very useful as it doesn't claim
one to be more puncture resistant than the other:
*Kevlar®Guard*
We have improved the well known Kevlar belt. The protective layer is
stronger and safer, but, at the same time, now more flexible. Result: The
protection level is higher and rolling resistance lower.*RaceGuard®*
This belt was developed specially with racing in mind. A synthesis of
special india rubber and several layers of nylon fabric offers very
effective protection against penetration punctures. There is only a minimal
increase in weight and rolling resistance of these tires.

[RBW] Re: My Nitto S-83 doesnt fit Brooks rails

2013-10-11 Thread jphillip...@me.com
I've had this trouble w/ a couple of Brooks saddles. If you remove the seat
post and hold it in your lap or on a table, it is a bit easier to slowly
tighten the bolt and gently force the rails to fit the seat post. I
tighten the seat post bolt first in the middle, and then at both ends of
the rails. Once done, there's no problem mounting the saddle on a seat post.

Hope this helps,

[RBW] Re: 50mm tires

2013-10-11 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Hugh,
I've been riding Big Bens on my Hunqapillar (48cm takes 26" wheels) for the
past several months, and probably ridden ~1,000 miles. I got them from Riv,
mounted to Aeroheat rims, and they measure just over 52mm now. You can find
picks on the Flickr group.

I mainly ride them on the pot-holed streets of Cambridge (plenty of glass
and other debris), though they've seen some dirt roads/paths and plenty of
tree-root bumps.

I've not experienced any flats, and the side walls look good. The tread in
the center contact area is showing a little wear, but not excessive. I'm
~155#, and I've jumped curbs and been practicing bunny hops. That said,
I've ridden Jack Brown Greens on the same roads and trails, and haven't
flatted, so I don't think no flats is necessarily meaningful. Also, we're
fortunate not to have goat heads to contend with over here.

I would recommend the Big Bens as a good all-rounder tire. For my commuting
needs, I'm interested in the Compass 26" tires. (Big Bens don't feel slow,
but I'd like to try a lighter weight tire... love the JB Greens on 700C.)

Congrats on the Atlantis. Looking forward to seeing it set up.

Don't know but I thought I saw Duremes tandem's on Schwalbe's web site?
Don't know if those work for you. And great feedback on your tires.

Re: [RBW] Re: 50mm tires

2013-10-11 Thread Patrick Moore
Hugh: a word of warning about the Furious Freds. They are wonderful tires,
with sealant, and are probably the best "all rounder-type riding" tires, at
least for my taste -- wide, soft, light, fast, more dirt than pavement. But
they are veruy thin and for rocks and roots I'd suggest something beefier
-- in my case, I got a good deal on nice, light Weirwolfs, but I had
thought of the RAcing Ralph. In fact, if I were in your shoes, or on your
bike, I'd very carefully consider swapping the BBs for singletrack and the
FFs for AR riding.

Note that the FFs are certainly sturdier than the Parigi Roubaixs I have on
the Ram; don't get me wrong, they are not delicate tires, just not heavy
duty ones.

Re: [RBW] Re: About to start experimenting with centerpulls

2013-10-11 Thread Patrick Moore
Spoken like a true professional. Someone should write up a "Rivendell's Way
To Canti/V/Centerpull/Single Pivot/Dual Pivot Happiness." The IRDs on the
Sam that Riv set up were the best brakes I've used, bar none, and I've used
most of them.

Speak more to us about housing: quality, lubrication (what about the
plastic lined stuff?), even ends, ferrules, lengths, bends, and of cables
themselves -- gauge, what have you. I will sit quietly and listen.

I've never had much luck setting up cantis for drop bar levers, so I can
stand to learn much there, having tried with a vast variety of makes and
models -- so much so that I've avoided cantis on my bikes.

Patrick Moore, who has been procrastinating in replacing the disk pads on
his Fargo, which he means nonetheless to ride this afternoon in ABQ, NM.

[RBW] Re: About to start experimenting with centerpulls

2013-10-11 Thread brian tester
Howdy folks. Speaking as a Rivendell Bicycle Works mechanic, I can offer a
couple of tidbits about brake stuff that may help out here:

It's one thing to compare brakes to brakes -- Silver sidepulls to Paul
Racers, for an easy example -- but it's another thing to compare brake
*set-ups* from bike to bike. There are variables! The brake itself is part
of a *system* that consists of cables, housing, ferrules, possibly straddle
cable and yoke position, brake pads and their toe-in or lack thereof, brake
levers, hangers, frame braze-ons, and, finally, brakes. I could mention
tires, too, since these are essentially huge brake pads that provide
friction against the ground. Too easy, then, to look at the brake as the
only component of note in stopping a bike.

So, it's worth it to look at housing quality, length, and curvature, and to
look at the finishing on the ends of the housing -- is it flat? Flattened
on a grinder or file, or is it all sharp and burr-covered? It matters! Is
the housing the jet-lubed variety? Is it dry as a desert gulch in there? Is
there a funny kink in the housing, or is it too short or too long? These
things will directly effect braking feel. Maybe way more than the brakes
themselves.

It's worth noting that if a brake didn't work at all, we would all know it,
it would probably no longer be sold, or at least the maker would be a
disgrace. I have encountered bikes with Paul Racers that frankly frightened
me in their reluctance to slow down my forward momentum. Same with
cantilevers, which can be tricky to set up right even for mechanics. I also
have experienced, on my own bike, humble sidepulls that will safely and
reliably slow/stop on trails that I have no business riding on.

If something is *the best*, then all the other things are some degree of
*worst*. What if, however, there is merely a range of acceptable/workable,
and it's our responsibility to make the most of the setup?

Sometimes I think disc brakes are taking off merely because the successful
setup element is more or less simplified to the point of disappearing. Set
up any brake just right, and the bike *will* stop. Then, it's up to us to
learn how best to use the brakes.

Anyway, just my two or three cents. Give a call in to RBW if you want to
discuss this some more.

Best,
Brian

[RBW] Sunrise Report, 10/11/13

2013-10-11 Thread Christopher Chen
Nice date, that.

Started at Rincon Park, at the base of the Bay Bridge. Realized that it
being dark, it would be kind of hard to find anyone that actually showed up
unless they already knew my cell phone or email address. Two folks joined
at the Ferry Terminal, as we rode along the waterfront trail. Turned up
North Point, to Stockton Street, and a nice climb up Lombard to the top of
Telegraph Hill.

Yet another foggy sunrise, but it was nice and quiet. Runners came by, a
few dog walkers, and some old people practicing Tai-Chi.

I realized I'm practicing the whole "go alone the first times if you have
to, telling your friends, lying if you have to, how much fun it is..."
thing from Grant's s24o primer.

San Francisco not being my home, I rented a bike share bicycle, an
interesting contraption with internal gears and drum brakes. A good bike
for a morning climb. I was joined by a Breezer and a nice Fuji touring
bike. My oh my were the tires overinflated.

Pictures prove we were wired.

[RBW] Re: 50mm tires

2013-10-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
I love my Schwalbe Duremes (700 x 50 mm) and how smooth they are on
paved/packed road yet handle all the single track I've tossed their way
well. If I were doing a trip that involved a lot of mud or sand, I'd likely
want a fat bike. But no flats in the 18 months I've used them. They're
discontinued, but their replacements seem pretty good as well. I love their
handling and especially not having to deal with flats.

Re: [RBW] Re: 50mm tires

2013-10-11 Thread Mike Schiller
I used the Ritchey Speedmax Beta on my lugged Stumpjumper. Rolls well on
pavement and off road.
http://ritcheylogic.com/mountain/tires/speedmax-beta-mountain-tire.html

I had the 40mm version of the Smart Sams on my Hillborne. Pretty slow on
pavement but does well off-road.

I think the Big Ben's are a great all rounder. Jim Warren has them on his
Hunqa and loves them.

[RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls

2013-10-11 Thread RoadieRyan
Bill, my first reaction to the diacompe rack was also - it's so tiny it's cute.
Ended up using it as a basket support on my sister-in-laws bike.

I have been refurbishing old 10 speeds for the last few years and have found
center pulls as good or better than side pulls.

[RBW] Re: Off-pavement riding

Well, that's it! All of cycling is really just a long continuum, but
marketing people want to focus us on a 'new' thing, which is really just a
part of the continuum that was always there. Rarely, in cycling and most
everywhere else, is something really 'new'.

To me, personal watercraft were 'new'. At least until I looked into the
other sorta similar water born personal propulsion thingamabobs. But to me,
they were new. So maybe to some a 'gravel' bike will also be new.

That said, bigger tires are good, and drop bar bikes that can ride in the
dirt are good. So where's the rub?

Well, to me the rub is that marketing can serve to divide people into
segments, or boxes, rather than to promote the bigger truth, which is that
were all just part of one big continuum. I add to the already long list of
cycling descriptors...'Gravel Guy/Gal'.

As in..

Dude: 'You ride?'
Dudette: 'Yep, sure do.'
Dude: 'Whatcha into?'
Dudette: 'Is that a trick question?'
Dude: 'Naa, just wondering what kind of riding you do.'
Dudette: 'Ahh, I'm a Gravel Gal.'
Dude: 'Oh, so you like to get dirty.'
Dudette: 'Go away!'

Smooth tracks,
Chris

[RBW] Re: Sweater/Top recomendation

2013-10-11 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
My favorite cool weather "sweater" (or equivalent) is a fine thread +
tightly woven Pendleton button up. It blocks the wind better than either
the sweaters or shirts from Riv. I own/wear a WollyWarm vest sometimes. I
also have an Ausie Wool zip-neck that I love and wear frequently. If I were
starting from scratch... I would get one of the Riv garmmets for insulation
and a Pendleton as a shell. This set up works fine in fog or mist, but will
certainly soak through in a downpour.

Filson might have something too.

[RBW] The Mysteries of Bike Assembly

2013-10-11 Thread Michael Hechmer
Since retiring I found that my Trek 620 commuter wasn't seeing much use,
and after I bought a Saluki on this list I pretty much stopped riding it
all together. I tried selling it but no one made me a decent offer and I
liked the ride too much to just give it away. When someone offered a good
set of NOS 650B wheels I decided to go ahead with a long standing plan to
convert this bike and add S&S couplers to the frame. Had to move the canti
studs, added DT studs and had it powdercoated, all by Bilenkey. Pictures
here: https://www.icloud.com/photostream/#A2GgZLKuGQYuu6 Sorry about the
fuzziness but I find it very difficult to hold an iphone steady enough to
take decent pictures. Other than the wheels, all the parts are stuff I had
on hand.

Anyway, every time I put a bike together I find myself wondering about why
some things are so much harder than they have to be and why the bike
industry hasn't made any attempt to ease the process. Don't get me started
on the bright idea of putting one chainring bolt in backwards! Cables
puzzle me the most. First, threading cable into aero brake levers. If
your light isn't perfect, or your eyes are over 50, or you're working with
a used cable that has the slightest bend in it, you will struggle. Why not
make the entry point funnel shaped, or the anchor slotted, or removable, or
even make the top of the lever housing removable? How hard would that be?
Second given how much the industry has worked to reduce inventory (steeply
sloping TT & ahead stems for example) why do we still have two cable sizes
with two different size housing, two different ends, two different caps and
crimps? I understand that brake cables need to be stronger than derailler
cables do, but derailler cables don't need to be weaker. In 35 years of
riding the only cable I have ever broken has been a rear derailler. I was
a long way from home and would have been much happier with a stronger
derailler cable as there were a lot of hills for me to negotiate on a
single speed bike! This time the cable disconnects created another
complication. If you haven't used these, the female end of the connectors
house a cable end. But that end is sized to work perfectly with derailler
cable. The brake cable end needs to be filed down in order to fit loosely
enough to allow the part to turn. This is in spite of the fact that they
made the brake cable hole a tad larger. In contrast the male end holds the
cable with two set screws, but the entry hole in the brake connect is much
smaller than the exit hole and, to my eye, just barely distinguishable from
the derailler connect. I think I spent half the time on this job playing
with cables!

Now I'm going to take it on a shake down ride, then disassemble, pack it in
a suitcase and fly to Oakland on Tuesday.

Michael

Haha. In all seriousness though I always found centerpulls the most
aesthetically pleasing, being a C&V guy for a while but also found no real

[RBW] Classic Bicycles Calendar

2013-10-11 Thread Jan Heine
After the success of last year's *Classic Bicycles* Calendar – our stocks
sold out within a single day! – we teamed up with Rizzoli again to bring
you a *2014 Calendar of Classic Bicycles*. Once again, it features
beautiful studio photographs of an eclectic selection of wonderful
machines. The range of bikes runs from the beautifully conventional to the
truly incredible, like the Labor with its single-sided fork (in 1910!) or
the Hirondelle Retro-Directe with its figure-8 chain. There are beauties
from Caminargent and Oscar Egg, a lovely 1890s Humber, as well as historic
machines like a PBP-winning René Herse, Ernest Csuka's personal Alex
Singer, and a tandem that set the hour record in the 1930s. With the
exception of Greg LeMond's Gitane and Guiseppe Saronni's Colnago, they are
all Riv-approved bikes with large clearances and fender eyelets... ;-)

[RBW] Re: Sweater/Top recomendation

2013-10-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
Either Woolie is great, depending on how warm blooded you are and if you're
sitting around or moving. The key is to have layering options so you can
easily adjust as needed. The sweater will be warmer though neither will
stop the wind. You may want a nylon shell for that if you need it.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Sweater/Top recomendation

2013-10-11 Thread NWAJack
So I live in Arkansas as opposed to MN :), and I'm looking for a good
winter shirt/sweater. Basically I want somthing I can wear riding,
fishing, and hiking in 40-60 degree weather that could also be worn for
"general use". Too often now I end up with just a cotton sweatshirt or
something and want something a little nicer and looks better. I'm looking
the WoolyWarm sweaters and also the Assie Wool Crewneck - any suggestions
as to which one?

Thanks,
Jack in Arkansas

[RBW] 60cm Wilbury on the Bay - Original Rivendell Mixte

2013-10-11 Thread Charlie
This is my second attempt to post this - first attempt did not show up -
might have used an incorrect Google ID.

In any event, there is a beautiful red original mixte with good equipment
on the Bay. These don't show up that often. Have no association with
seller.

Charlie

Apologies if this message appears twice. Also not sure if links are
