Jeff,

I do hope you flip that over to 80/20 or better. This would be a great one
to get to know you and it'll be mellow as you'd like and the bonus of Ojai

Are you just regrouping in the old family haunts before moving to the West

Re: [RBW] Re: SoCal February S240 poll.

2014-01-27 Thread Hugh Smitham
Mike,

The 14th is out as I made the mistake regarding Valentines day. So the only
date I can go is the 28th I'll be closing the poll it was a nice idea and
I'll employ it's function in the future.

As far as the camps the pathlesspedaled suggested Lake Casitas camp &
Dennison County both good choices and close to Ojai. As my post stated I'm
dialing it down on this one as I promised Evan a less epic ride and more
gentle.

You can of course come along do Sulphur Mountain (I might even join you)
and then meet at the camp. The next day you can see how many(might be a low
turn out as Friday is hard for working folks) want to do Casitas Pass? Or
you could do the ride your suggesting. we'll see how things shake out.

Let me know if your available for the 28th. If I get zero bites I have a
solo overnight ride planned in my neighborhood.

[RBW] Re: Winter Bikepacking tips?

2014-01-27 Thread Deacon Patrick
Thanks, Jim. Yes, it is quite a temperature range -- bigger than summer's
range. Yesterday, we reached 45 here, and this morning was -5˚F, so that is
a 50 degree swing in 18 hours. I've ridden my bike for short rides down to
-15˚F. So I'm reasonably comfortable that my setup is OK as is. I didn't
see anything super glaring in the list you provided.

Yes, miles of deep snow will be an adventure. I'm curious to see how that
goes. With my vertigo, I can't carry any weight above my waist, so my
wheeled pack-mammoth is my beast of burden. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

The build details are shown in the Rivendell receipt, which I've
scanned and *posted with photos of the
 bike*(taken when bike was new).
All of the photos of the bike were taken when
the bike was new. The pedals and saddle shown in the photos are not
 included.

Color is Agapanthus purple. IMHO it is a very beautiful albeit very
non-traditional color. There are a couple obscure nicks in the paint,
which I treated with clear nail polish as soon as they occurred.
 Otherwise
the frame is in excellent condition.

To the best of my knowledge, everything shown in the receipt is on the
 bike, EXCEPT:

1. I'm keeping the Nitto Front Rack.
2. The stem on the bike is a Nitto Technomic 5 cm stem.
3. The bars on the bike are Nitto Noodle 46 cm (instead of the 44
cm on the receipt)
4. The brake levers on the bike are Cane Creek SCR-5C
5. I'm fairly sure that I've replaced the cassette, and it is
probably still a 11-34, but no promises

In addition to everything on the bike, the following miscellaneous
stuff is included in the sale:

1. [In addition to the bars&brake levers on the bike] Nitto 44 cm
Noodle bars with Shimano Tiagra Aero Brake Levers and Tektro
 Interrupter
Brake Levers. (photo on my Smugmug page)
2. [In addition to the Nitto 5 cm stem on the bike] Nitto 7 cm stem
(photo on my Smugmug page)
3. Six spare spokes for rear wheel
4. Qty 4 Rainbow Nifty Swifty 584x32.8 650B tires. Two have ~3500
miles. Two are, I believe, brand new or nearly so.
5. [In addition to the nearly unused Panaracer Col de Vie tires on
the bike] ) One extra unused Col de Vie.
6. 4 extra tubes
7. Arkel Handlebar Map Case, new (photo on my Smugmug page)
8. Cinelli Cork Tape, natural color, in box.
9. Bertoud Saddlebag, never used. Looks like the left one in this
 WallBike
image
 ---
but in the color of the right one in that image, and without the
quick-mount hardware. (photo on my Smugmug page)
10. Vintage Bicycle Quarterly. Volume 3, #4. Volume 4, -#1&2&4.
 Volume 5, #2&3
11. Rivendell Reader. Issues 27, 29, 30, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 38.
12. RivBike Catalog #19

I'll do my best to answer questions. I haven't paid any attention to
it since 2007, so I may be a bit rusty (but the Saluki is not rusty).

 Thanks, AmyL, Palo Alto

2014-01-27 Thread franklyn
My philosophy, when you find the white whale is always to buy first (paypal
funded by credit card), then sell later. i.e., buy the bike you want, then
try to unload whatever you can later.

That's a stunning color, and a canti version, too.

Not to mention how good a deal it is for the complete bike in that
condition. Wow! Not my size...

[RBW] FS in Bay Area: 60 cm 650B Saluki (SN#SA0017)

2014-01-27 Thread Amy Lauterbach
Prompted by an imminent remodel project, I'm finally cleaning out my garage.

*2005 60 cm 650B Saluki (SN#SA0017). Fully built (by Rivendell), including
a bunch of extra stuff listed below. I'd like to sell the whole collection
of things for $2000. * I live in Palo Alto and have a very strong
preference to sell it locally so I don't run the risk of shipping something
that I've misrepresented.

I rode it for 18 months (~4000 miles), and then switched to a new custom
Sycip Rohloff bike which I've ridden exclusively since then. I have made
the transition to internal gearing and will not return to the Saluki, so it
has been unused in my garage since January 2007.

The build details are shown in the Rivendell receipt, which I've scanned
and *posted with photos of the
bike*(taken when bike was new). All
of the photos of the bike were taken when
the bike was new.

   3. The bars on the bike are Nitto Noodle 46 cm (instead of the 44 cm on
   the receipt)
   4. The brake levers on the bike are Cane Creek SCR-5C
   5. I'm fairly sure that I've replaced the cassette, and it is probably
still a 11-34, but no promises

In addition to everything on the bike, the following miscellaneous stuff is

And here are some tips on bike prep for Iditabike.

Pushing a bike miles through deep snow in low temps can be a bit of a drag,

[RBW] Re: Winter Bikepacking tips?

2014-01-27 Thread Jim M.
That's a big range of temps. At 45, nothing is different, but you knew
that. I haven't spent a lot of time biking in sub-zero weather, but what I
have found is that grease in hubs, bb's, and headset can get very stiff and
make it hard to pedal/roll. If you're going to spend much time in that
temp, switch to a very light grease. I think the Iditabikers even just use
oil for those bearing surfaces.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne as tourer

2014-01-27 Thread dougP
Any Rivendell, (possible exception being the Roadeo?) makes a better
touring bike than the overwhelming majority of bikes sold. Since most
tourists stick to developed roads, Sam is likely superb for that use.
Comfort during long, back to back days in the saddle is key to an enjoyable
touring bike, and we all know that's an area where Rivendells shine. I've
been on supported tours where people on skinny tire racing bikes are beat
to death by the end of the day and grumble about stretches of bad
pavement. Granted, I don't need my Atlantis for a trip like that but it's
sure comfy. A Sam, Betty, Hunq, etc., would probably be just as nice, and
you'd look forward to doing it all again tomorrow.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne as tourer

2014-01-27 Thread Patrick Moore
I guess that one man's touring bike is another's off-road bike -- if it's
not his road bike. From my short distance, rear-load-only experience with
my Ram, I'd have to say that "touring bike" is a category that covers a lot
of ground. In my experience, the Ram could very nicely carry 40 lb of gear,
if 10-15 lb were carried in front. (Well, actually, I don't have any
experience of carrying 15 lb on the front of a Ram, but the Ram *does* carry
30 lb in the rear with complete aplomb, and I *suspect* that the Ram would
handle 15 lb on Tubus Duos perfectly well. For what *that's* worth.)

Perhaps the take away message here is ...(loud chords) ... *versatility!* Who'd
'a thunk?

Re: [RBW] New Rack for Monseiur Blériot

2014-01-27 Thread Bill Lindsay
Yes. Mine attaches twice to my metal fenders and because of that doesn't
require the optional brake stay. I had to handwring like a handwringing
handwringer over which of the mounting holes to use. I wanted to run it as
low as possible, and make it look all constructeurish. Turns out I would
have needed to drill new holes halfway between two of the options. I
prefer to avoid drilling stainless steel whenever I can, so I decided to
run the rack a wee bit 'too high' and made custom spacers from aluminum
tubing.

[RBW] Winter Bikepacking tips?

2014-01-27 Thread Deacon Patrick
So rather than flee as a whole family to the southern reaches of Arizona and
all the unknown of that that could wreak havoc on my bludgeoned brain, I will
be solo bikepacking the areas around here (Pikes Peak) that I know so well. But
construction now has a start date of February 17 and an unknown completion date
(I’m guessing 3-8 weeks).

Temps at the various elevations I’ll be at can range from 45˚F-minus 30˚F. I’m
familiar with how to camp at those temperatures, but anyone have experience
with caring for a bike at those temps/in snow? What do I need to consider?

With abandon,

Leah - I really sympathize with the total change your move has made in your biking locale and routine.  I almost hesitate to write the following - because it's sort of against the use the bike for as much as possible philosophy.  I also should point out that I'm lucky to live in a place where I can do almost any thing by bike from my house.  Ok, all that said, here's what I suggest: put the bike on your car and drive to some place to ride.  Heresy, I know.  But at least you would be getting out to ride!  Can you park your car somewhere that would allow you to do errands, grocery shopping, etc by bike and return to the car?  Using the car for only part of the trip is still good, in my opinion.  I know people who, for whatever reason, just live to far from work to bike the whole way so they drive part of the way, park and then ride.  It's still biking and better than notbiking!Joan  On 01/27/14, LeahFoy wrote: Well, today I set out on the school commute with fresh hopes and clear mind. Subject: [RBW] New Rack for Monseiur Blériot

Just got done installing a Velo Orange "Constructeur" rack on Monsieur Blériot:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/campyonlyguy/sets/72157640231227834/

The rack is nicely made of polished stainless steel, and mimics the appearance
of the smallish racks often installed on classic randoneurring bikes. I plan to
use it to carry extra gear on long brevets and an upcoming three-day ride.

Installation went smoothly, except for the part where I created a problem for
myself by cutting the mounting tabs too short. A trip to a local bike shop and
the hardware store later, and I was able to fashion some extenders to get the
rack in the right place.

The small reflector on the back is held by a tiny bracket that in turn is held
on the rack via a built-in mounting point. The reflector itself is an
old-fashioned but new item from another project that never came to fruition.

With the rack in place, the only other addition I plan to make is to install a
set of Magnic headlights. That will come later in the year, probably for a 400K
brevet in March.

2014-01-27 Thread Deacon Patrick
To follow up, I just received the 2.25" Smart Sams and they fit just fine
on my original clearances Hunqapillar (rated to 55mm vs. 58 for the new
green ones) -- at least they look fine to my untrained eye. I rode the 3
miles lowland path that has a number of places of loose gravel that caused
swim and extra hard pedal pushing with the 50mm Duremes, just extra hard
pedal pushing with the 2.1" Smart Sams, and now with the 2.25" Smart Sams I
mostly floated right over it, just noticing the need to add a bit more
effort the pedals. Looking forward to trying them out on snowy back roads
and trails!

Today was Lincoln's big debut of riding his 16 inch Specialized Hotrock bike

the sensory experience, but I appreciated that none of us became road kill,

[RBW] Sam Hillborne as tourer

2014-01-27 Thread Patrick Moore
More nice photos, this time of Sams, on the Blug. I am suprised to see the
Sam described as a touring bike, particularly this sentence:

We shouldn’t be pigeonholing Sam like this, but for the prospective
bike-shopper choosing options *in an established category*, we could say
it’s a “road touring bike.” And it does that *one* thing better than any
other bike we know of (we’ve tried ‘em all)

I thought the Atlantis was the model for touring. (Yes, I know that Riv is
trying to squeeze this beautiful round peg into a quotidian square hole.)

At any rate, there are nice photos of the Sam (including two with *Drop
Bars!* and *single top tubes!*) that make me a bit nostalgic for the 56 I
used to own. I didn't like the way it handled with a heavy rear load, but I
daresay that, with load better distributed fore/aft, it would have done
well.

(For the record, if you are going to build a Sam up as an upright city
bike, I *do* approve of a kickstand plate, though I would not want one on
my bike -- mine didn't have one.)

But as a "country bike" it was close to ideal; just not ideal for me, since
45 mm tires off road, around here, are just too skinny for my taste.

But it is *pretty* and, had I all the money in the world and a lot more
time to ride every bike I own, I'd have kept it. Certainly I would have
chosen it over the old 1958 Herse (nice as that was) that replaced it for a
year or so until I split the difference between Fargo and Ram.

Segwaying and swaying (in the metaphorical breeze): I took the '03 fixed
(70") out on the same climbing route today that I rode the 14-speed Ram
over yesterday. And although yesterday's ride used only these gears (in
order of use) -- 65, 70, 60, 50, 74 -- the 25" gap and a freewheel for
steep downhills makes one almost apologetic, it all becomes so easy. OTOH,
there is nothing in cycling life as fun/challenging/satisfying as pacing
yourself to stand on a 1 mile hill. (My climbs are steepish but modest in
length.) The '99 gofast, 75", is even more fun on the same route, but it
doesn't carry a load of mail or groceries.

Imperfection side story. I was so thrilled how the bar tape looked with clear

I walked my bike up a hill in the last 200K I did. About 5 miles from the
end there is an absolute wall of a hill on Barton Creek Blvd. Well I too
was wearing normal shoes so I got off and walked. It was great! No guilt
here! I think the rules of brevets state that your cycle just has to be
human powered, and it was. Once I got to the top of the hill I mounted my
bike and rode the last 5 miles.

I think I'm going to make a personal resolution to walk up any hill with a
grade over 15%. Or should I say 12% ;)

[RBW] Re: Cheviot!?

2014-01-27 Thread BSWP
What Grant calls "rough around the edges... in a way that adds to its
humility" (paraphrasing) is what my Italian family members call "malfatti."
Taken literally, it means roughly-hewn, but in practice it's a loving term
bestowed on something made by hand (wine, furniture, even tonight's dinner)
that has, maybe, some rough edges but is in an overall sense delicious and
attractive.

If the Cheviot has those qualities, then all the better. I think it's a
beautiful bike.

RE: [RBW] Re: Cheviot!?

2014-01-27 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
Riv sells long rack stays in a variety of lengths and shapes, up to 42cm. But
I mounted a Tubus rear rack to my Mystery Bike (which has ~54cm chainstays)
using the stock rackstays – maxed out, but solid nevertheless. No noticeably
greater flex. But the weight does end up a long way back on the bike, which
can generate some shimmy at the right speed, no hands. Here:

[RBW] Schmidt SON hub VIBRATIONS!

2014-01-27 Thread Christopher Mungioli
I have had a schmidt SON 28 hub on my bike for a little over a year now,
and until the other day there had never been a problem. I loved it, the
light is so bright and hassle free, no batteries and everything so
wonderful.

Then last night on my way home I noticed a low pitched vibrating noise
coming from my front wheel. Though it was the tire rubbing on the fender
stays or something, and finally took the hole thing apart and put it back
together, and it still vibrated, like a pitch fork (only noise no movement
in the bars or anything).

Even attached the wheel with the fenders and everything taken off and it
still made a vibrating noise.

Anyone ever had something like this happen before? Any ideas on how to fix
it?

Thanks

[RBW] Re: FS: Pass&Stow Porteur Rack and Freight Baggage Porteur Rack Bag

2014-01-27 Thread Jim Schwappach
Basically I don't anymore.

Kids and work.

Kids and their schedules have put a greater emphasis on getting things done
when I can, rather than taking the time to ride around for shopping,
errands, etc.

Biggest thing though is my work schedule and timing changed right after I
bought them, making it impractical for me to ride into work--I used the
rack and bag for carrying lunch and other smaller items on my commute.

Regardless--I'm not getting the usage out of the rack and bag. Hoping
somebody else can put them to better use.

My wife discovered and bought a book I read once in elementary school and then
in faded into the mist but stuck with me in ways the great stories do after
even one telling. Paddle-to-the-Sea exemplifies the spirit of Rivendell, as
least as I experience it. It is a joy to get to share it with my kids.

It has a spirit of creation and craftsmanship, wild adventure, long waylays,
seeming destruction turned to renewal and unexpected help for the helpless,
ardent adventurer on a noble quest, and selfless love and giving of strangers
crossing paths for brief periods, both the better for the encounter.

In case you know it and it was also lost in the mist, here is a reminder.

Sure, I'll use it for S24Os. I think the bike probably cost about $150 in 1973.

Thanks all. I got the racks and fenders installed. It is a lot of work doing

attaches at the dropout, at the crown with a daruma, and to the rack platform.
Now I'm ready for just about anything. Except now that the fenders are fully
fitted, now I get to take them back off for pinstriping!

really really impressed. It's not done in my mind until the racks and fenders
are on, but getting it to rideable was a big step. The racks ought to be in
soon, maybe tomorrow, and then I'll be able to do the rack and fender install.
Even without racks, the Saddlesack Medium fits, so this bike is S24O ready.
It's full Alba-smile worthy.

Imperfection side story. I was so thrilled how the bar tape looked with clear
shellac. I ran out of clear and rushed down to the hardware store. They were
down to their last can of clear, and that can was kind of banged up. It had
splatter and drips on it, but it seemed full when I shook it. Whatever. I
bought it and have done a couple more coats of "clear". It's looking more
amber, and the one side that I first did with clear looks lighter than the side
that got three coats of this tainted can. Oh well, we're making memories (as
my mom always says)!

[RBW] Re: My Bike Life Is Lacking

2014-01-27 Thread Liesl
Leah, walking a bike up a hill is just fine. Holy moly, you should've seen
me huffing and puffing pushing the loaner Hunq up the foothills of Mt
Diablo when I went on the Riv S24O last spring. At first I felt
embarressed because I couldn't even use any excuses like I'm a woman in my
50's because there was Anne moving along spritely. But then I moved into a
different headspace. Perhaps Grant or Deacon Patrick was whispering in my
ear: all rides are an opportunity; make up the rules so that you win; just
ride... and I found myself thinking, "Wow! I can do this! It doesn't
matter if I walk up a hill or through a really tricky part! It's fun and
hard work!" Plus everyone on the ride was so great at stopping at the top
of a hill to chat, take pictures, drink water, talk about the route,
whatever and oh by the way stay until I made it.

I'm also like you in that I like to ride with a place in mind. But I've
also found that going out wandering in a new place is fantastic. I have a
Bike Friday that goes with me on work trips or vacations and I relish just
going out on it and seeing what I find. Doesn't need to be far. You might
also enjoy putting a hammock or a tiny camp chair on your Betty along with
some project you like (a book, knitting, carving, watercolors...) and have
that be your mission; skip the camp chair and do it at a coffee shop.
Makes a short ride really fun.

best of luck and oh by the way I love this listserv
