Re: [RBW] All turned around bout rims [SOS Help!]

2014-05-08 Thread Aaron Young
Ditto on the summer ride, Hugh.

This 26" set will be for my "rough stuff" Koga Miyata Valley Runner.
Currently it's set up with Albatross bars, but I'm planning on going to
Albastache bars because I feel like I can be more aggressive on downhills
with the brakes up front. I have regular moustache bars (Moustace
Classique?") on my Sam H. and I love those on downhills. Ideally, the Koga
Miyata will also be my camping bike and might possibly do some touring
depending on how racked I can get it (and if I can ever get my act together
enough to actually do a tour). So wheels-wise I want to cover those bases.
I was thinking the Velocity Atlas might be overkill so that's what lead me
to the Aeroheat.

Badly done.

[RBW] Re: How would your choice of Rivish Bike carry forward to your choice of automobile?

2014-05-08 Thread Christopher Murray
I think the obvious choice would be a classic VW Beetle- 1967 maybe? Easy to
work on and very logical and straightforward. On my '67 the windshield washer
fluid reservoir was pressurized by the spare tire. GENIUS!!

+1 on the Element. Spent many nights sleeping in the back of it with my bike
right next to me. Up early and riding. I must say it is not great for a young,
growing family.

Also must give a shout-out to the Chevy Volt. An absolutely amazing piece of
engineering that still makes me smile when I get behind the wheel.

Cheers!

[RBW] Re: Question about Bleriot selling...drops or Albas more likely to sell?

2014-05-08 Thread Bill Lindsay
No to the BB.

I'd wager a dollar that the person who wants to buy a used Bleriot will not
want an external BB. In fact, the person who buys your frame would
probably go straight to the LBS and pay money to have a mechanic remove
it. So your frame is actually worth more without the BB than it is with
it. Are you throwing in the BB because you don't have the tool to remove
it?

Your customer will likely want the brake calipers, though. Few people have
those super long reachers just laying around. Go frame+fork+headset+brake
calipers. Include the BB with the crankset. Maybe $80 I'm thinking.
Maybe $50 for the RD and $25 for the FD. The wheelset is tough, since the
rims are mismatched. Maybe offer them separately on here and on the 650B
group page. $100 for the rear and $50 for the front? That would be a
decent price for both sides I think.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Hunqapillar

2014-05-08 Thread David Stein
This is actually my first bike with canti's with a center pull (all my road
bikes have had shimano 105 calipers). I spent way too long last night
trying to figure out how to get them to release so I could remove the tire,
in my defense it was dark, my dog was bullying me into playing fetch, and i
was trying to cook. Finally figured it out.

And on the blog they did have their own saddle on it, I supplied my own
Brooks Cambrium. I love that saddle, have been riding it on my road bike
for a few months, excited to have it on my trail bike. Though the brown
leather brooks looked better with the tan bar tape. Guess it won't matter
when my ass is in the seat and I'm riding. A little nervous about long term
wear on it, but only time will tell.

Almost everyone uses proxy bidders, aka sniping software, to automatically
bid at the last moment. There were probably several snipes being made all
in the last couple of seconds. You can't gauge how high something will go
by what the current bid is. It's irrelevant.

OOPS...what Shoji said. I meant CX70 cantis. Those are terrific brakes.
I've had them on my X0-1 for a couple of years now. Almost thinking about
getting another set for my AR which has circa 95 DeoreXT cantilevers with a
similar profile. The new CX70's are really slick, though ...especially for

To pile on: frame/fork/headset/bottom bracket may well be the way to go.
Last year I saw a complete copper/orange Raleigh International sell on eBay
for roughly $350. Since then I've seen International frame/forks, of

Re: [RBW] All turned around bout rims [SOS Help!]

2014-05-08 Thread Hugh Smitham
Hey Aaron,

I did have a wheel set built. DT Swiss rims 4_ _ ? double butted DT spokes
SON 28 Black hub with an XT rear hub Black. I originally wanted a set of
Velocity Synergy's in black with MSW's but apparently they don't make the
Synergy's in 26" so I went with the DT rims as they had a similar cross
section to the Velocity's. The wheels are laced 32 front & rear as I'm
about 155 lbs and don't figure on carrying excessive gear/weight (no more
than 40lbs but more likely in the 30 lb range) and compromised with a bit
less rotating weight. I'll get the specific's on the rim model later. I'd
like to do my own build but life has conspired to limit my time these days.

Which bike are your wheels intended for? Look forward to what you build and
hope to get a ride in with you this Summer.

I think we've probably all been there at one time or another. The difference in
this case, however, is context. In the situation you've outlined, you were
trying to sell (albeit not to aggressively :-) something to an audience who
knew nothing of the object or its relative worth. Not surprisingly, they found
your price to be outrageous.

In this particular case, I think we can safely assume that the audience in this
forum DOES know something about the objects for sale and has some justification
for finding the asking prices to be out of line. I, for one, am a nationally
recognized expert in vintage Rivendell plastic water bottles - so don't try to
pull anything over on me man.

I am, however, inclined to say that calling PB Bikes out for being silly will
only invite argument. Buy or do not. That is all that matters in this context.

Re: [RBW] Get your Rivendell water bottles!

2014-05-08 Thread Jim Bronson
Haha

"yeah haters be hatin, I love bikes as much as anyone else. i search the
world for this gear, the xt xtr stuff was imported and it wasnt cheap.

you rivs and bfs can ball all yoou want about prices.

What it really comes down to is, even if i wanted to sell more, theres 2 of
us, so when I drop the prices, we cant handle the volume of sales and end
up witha bunch of buttholes buying. Its always the cheapsters that make the
most problem, If i gave someone a set of xtr nos hubs for $100 , theyd
complain about something. Its the nature of bf and probably the riv and
ibob, I mostly read the cr list and know peter and lost of those cool
builders.

When you guys talk shite, think about last year, i stepped up and between
cash donation and what I auction for charity, kicked about $1800 to make a
wish at bamf. What you do? The thing i dont do is criticize people for
their own personal stuff. I mean what .org do you work for. I run and
ecologically viable reused business. Nothing is manufactured right now in
china, its searched out , laboriously, invested heavily, risk assesed .

I get messages like this all the time. well you guys talk about me at
least, too bad most dont the first thing about econ it seams or act like
they run their life like a non profit but probably work for some horrible
publicly traded company.

Glad you had the time to send your negative bs cause you are stuck in the
thought pattern that auctions have any bearing on market value, 90% of nos
in cycling via ebay is BIN store, you can buy from rivs, swaps, mom and
pops, etc. That another thing i dont do, compete with bike shops in my area
like so many others that open up next to each other. Im not selling food,
you dont need anything i have.

Im having a hard time, one of dogs almost died yesterday and all that xt
money make is gonna be gone to the vet. So your message was great , hope
you do something that makes difference for real in the world. man, i export
to china, who does that?

An '87 Paramount is a nice bike. I would pay good money for it. In fact
there's a huge late 80s Paramont at East Side Pedal Pushers in Austin I
would like to have if money was no object. The guy who owns it works there
and is about the same height as me.

But there are people trying to sell crappy 80s bikes for good money all the
time on CL. That does bother me. Shameless hucksters. The world is full
of them. I wonder what I could sell my gas pipe Nishiki for? Certainly
more than I would be willing to pay for it. But anyway.

I know it sound strange to say but I actually have better luck with foreign
sellers on eBay. Because they're the folks that are seeking to take
Walmart out of the equation and sell direct to first world buyers. I have
no problem buying stuff direct from China. Hong Kong, Singapore, etc, for
cheap on eBay. If it never shows up, oh well, I'm not out much money
anyway. But so far I've had pretty good luck.

well it started like this

* Dear pb*bikes,*

One of these sold yesterday for $44 plus $7 shipping. It was also NOS. I
can wait for the next one to come up. Or just get a new XT T780 in the
$50-$60 range; won't be quite as shiny but oh well...

Maxi Car hubs are vintage. This is not vintage. It's 10 speed compatible,
for crying out loud. As far as I can tell, you're just trying to see who's
a sucker for bright sliver which seems to be out of style these days. But
hopefully there are enough of these around so that nobody would be tempted
to take your offer.

For $200 you could get a used boutique hub like a Chris King or Phil Wood.
But anyway.

I was on the other end. I bought that 1987 used Schwinn Paramountain on
craigslist for $400. I did the overhaul and put another $400 of parts on
it (B17, bosco bullmoose, thumbie shifters, brakepads + cables, chain, 3
chainrings). I did the build so that it would be dialed for me. When my
wife busted me, I told her it was for the Elementary School bike auction,
and I tried to sell it for $600. I got yelled at by two different people
telling me what a jerk I was for asking $600 for that bike. I cheerfully
asked each of them what they thought was a fair price. Both were under
$200. Needless to say, I didn't sell to them, but they left absolutely
convinced that I'm a crook. My wife shook her head and said "so you're
keeping it, huh? surprise, surprise!"

Re: [RBW] Get your Rivendell water bottles!

2014-05-08 Thread Hugh Flynn
I have to look away. I just came across a PB Bike listing for $225 Campag 10
speed front hub that states it can be used with 9 and 11 speed as well.

Such a train wreck.

Must stop looking.

[RBW] Re: Ring the Peak Birthday Ride

2014-05-08 Thread Deacon Patrick
Chris and Chris: Thanks!

Chris: If 2 hours of use counts as long enough to render an initial
opinion, yes, I am happy with it. I love that it is a quick mount on the
bars and one mount/light will easily work on both bikes. I should have
gotten the glare guard and am debating how to best remedy that. The
illumination pattern is fantastic on the road (just point it up far enough
so the bright patch disappears and you see a LONG way), a bit odd on steep
trail, but easily workable (I only did LCG in the dark on the trail).

Patrick

[RBW] Ring the Peak Birthday Ride

2014-05-08 Thread Deacon Patrick
Headed out at 4am this morning sporting my new birthday light (B+M Ixon IQ).
Roads are wondrously quiet then! And thanks to the new light, brilliantly
illuminated as well. Plus, battery powered, so it works when in LCG up 25%
slopes. Grin.

The trails are now clear of snow, (my birthday tends to be a good marker of
this around here), so this was my first serious trail ride of the year (7.5
hours of riding). Highlights:

-- Bigfoot sports a mullet
-- I rode higher gearing than I've ever ridden on these trails, though lower
than I'll have on my QB. I think these are too rocky and technical for the QB
anyway, but it's good to find out where I am in comparison.
-- Forest thinning equipment is LOUD and carries a LONG way. Thankful for
earplugs. So much for remote solitude.
-- Long rides feel god.
-- Birthday rides increase appreciation for the bike I have and the bike that's
coming.
-- Birthday rides are a wondrous time for reflection on the abundance of life
and love I've been blessed with so far and looking forward to another year of
wild adventure.
-- Backroad connectors are brilliant ways to avoid congestion and brain
implosion on the highway, making rides like this possible (wife needn't drive
me to the trailhead!).
-- Amazing homecomings are a great way to end a ride. Lassies (who weren't up
when I left) burst out the house and engulfed me upon my arrival.

Re: [RBW] Get your Rivendell water bottles!

2014-05-08 Thread Hugh Flynn
This is the same guy currently offering 1 pair of velox plugs for $30 right?

Reminds me of the guys who use to populate rec.bike.forsale (or what ever it
was) selling carbon cranks at outrageous prices and routinely getting in fights
with anyone who questioned their sky high prices and abusive public demeanor.
One suspects there is more at play with these people than simple logic will
reveal, so it's probably best to not feed the trolls with the attention they
seem to crave.

If someone were to offer me $100 for any water bottle currently in my
possession or $30 for any of my NOS velox plugs, I would surely comply with the
request. I do, however, have a hard time believing that a person willing to
make such an offer actually exists.

Re: [RBW] All turned around bout rims [SOS Help!]

2014-05-08 Thread Aaron Young
Sounds like a good rim, Hugh.

Chris, the rim wall on my rear wheel is getting pretty thin and I keep
getting this thought that it's going to fail pretty soon. I'll do a 26" set
first (maybe just the rear) and do a 650b set next. Might go with Aeroheats
on that build too.

I snapped up a pair of NOS Mavic M261 559 rims (silver, box section, double
eyelets) that at 26mm wide are a very nice match for my Compas 559x1.5 and
1.75 tires. I wouldn't want to go any narrower for 1.5 and above tires if I

Hugh,

I just finished reading through this thread. But how does it end? Did you
decide on a rim? Which one and what do you think of it?

I'm resurrecting this thread because I'm researching 26" rims for my first
go at wheel building. I was leaning toward the Aeroheat before coming
across this thread, and will likely go in that direction.

Hope your wheels worked out well.

Re: [RBW] Re: What is the advantage of expensive hubs?

2014-05-08 Thread Jim Bronson
I tried to grab an old school XTR off of eBay and someone outbid me with 2
seconds left. :(

Granted, I had outbid them with 15 seconds left...oh well, guess it takes
two to tango.

I gave up and just got a silver FH-T780 current gen XT hub. It doesn't
look as nice and shiny as the old school one but who knows when another NOS
XTR will come up...and I need to build my wheel. I suppose I could have
the hubshell powdercoated in shiny silver, I know that is possible ;)

So to answer my own question, no, I don't perceive an advantage to the
bling hubs. The price differential was just too much for me. Some of the
more affordable cartridge bearing hubs either didn't come in 135 (many), or
36h (bikehubstore.com), weren't available in silver (silver) or had some
other undesirable aesthetic characteristic (miche and their red axles, for
one). I set a max price of $100. The XT I got was $49+tax with free
shipping and I'm satisfied.

I guess the next question would be, what's the best grease for loose ball
bearing hubs ;) I stopped into Performance today to pick up some various
stuff and their shop guys like the DuraAce grease. It says on the tube
that it's made in Germany. Interesting because you would think most
Shimano stuff is produced in Asia.

I'll third that it sounds like the rim is worn out. Feeling around the
brake track, does it feel concave? If so, that's another sign that it's
worn out and on the edge of failure. In any case, I'd take it to the LBS
for a second opinion, and probably a new rim.

Re: [RBW] RCW Custom Ride Report

2014-05-08 Thread Jeremy Till
I'll second Tom's message and say that even small bikes with standard
length chainstays often need extra long struts to reach down to the seat
stay eyelets while keeping the top of the rack level, so I can see how your
bike is way out there vis a vis rack compatibility. I wonder if the 42cm
Nitto struts that Riv sells
would
be long enough and perhaps curve-able to be able to fit one of the Nitto
rear racks on your bike. Mark would probably have an idea.

[RBW] Re: [BOB] Trade? 115 mm Phil for 103 mm Phil?

2014-05-08 Thread Chris Cullum
The DA 103mm BB is a cartridge model. The spindles are so short that it is
unlikely that a cup and cone type would fit anyway.

I have one but I'm not sure I'm willing to sell as I know I will need it
shortly afterward...

In addition to the DA, which is hard to find, and Phil Wood, Tange and
Sugino make a 103mm JIS cartridge bb that are relatively easy to source.
The Sugino Messenger crank also takes a 103mm IIRC which makes finding
these a little easier than a few years ago. Shimano no longer makes them
that short.

[RBW] Re: Question about Bleriot selling...drops or Albas more likely to sell?

2014-05-08 Thread Bill Lindsay
The wheels are kind of a problem in my mind. Twin hollow wheels with Deore
hubs just aren't all that desireable and wheels cost so darn much to ship.
If you part it out, you might end up setting up that wheelset as a second
set for your Hillborne. A twin-hollow wheelset is a cool option for
somebody doing a 650B conversion, but that person is more likely going to
need a 130mm or 126mm rear hub, so your market is small there as well.
Adding up what I think fair prices are for your parts, I think you could
find yourself at $1350 and still keeping the wheelset for yourself for
free.

[RBW] Re: RCW Custom Ride Report

2014-05-08 Thread Liesl
Michael, thanks for the tips but I think I'm already doing all that. I think
the issue is that the springs themselves take up about 2-3 inches of real
estate so a saddle bag can't tuck up under the seat. The net effect is the
whole bag hangs lower and further aft and rubs on the rear tire.

Pudge, your rear rack photos are helpful. Longer stays with some strategic
bends will be the answer.

Fellow short people: the cheviot!

Re: [RBW] Re: New Hunqapillar

2014-05-08 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Super! Let me know about the Compass 1.75... I've been contemplating adding
them for the summer. (But I must say the Big Bens are great for road and
trail. I've looked at the Smart Sams, but I do too much road to justify it
over the Big Bens... hence my interest in the Compass.)

I'm the same height+PBH. (Saddle height ~69-70.) It's great on the trails
to have a little extra room to step down. For my reach, the 48 is better
for 100mm stem and Noodles. I've got a set of moustache bars that I'll put
on later this spring/summer.

Also +1 on the CX70 brakes. I swapped out the Tektros (after I over
tightened and snapped a bolt), and CX70s are great, even with the OEM brake
pads. Set up is very easy, nice stopping power, good feel at the brake
lever. For the chubby Big Bens, as advertised, I no longer have to deflate
the tire to pull the wheel. (Hurray for small victories.)

Jandrews-- I've got a 48 Hunqapillar in grey/bean, so I think that's
probably an unfair advantage. For this bike, it's the wheel size-- 54 is a
29er, and those wheels look really big.

Happy riding!
shoji

Patrick, I have a Phil 103, stainless spindle, brand new never used. I

I second that. When your rim gets wider, it means it's bowing outward. At
the seam is where it's easiest to bow, since the rim is split there. You
probably are just a few brake maneuvers away from the rim suddenly
cracking, and a part of the sidewall breaking away. I am surprised that a
front rim lasted only 16,000 miles, but it all depends on the conditions,
and, of course, on how thick that sidewall was to begin with.

After you've replaced the rim, you can cut it in half and see how much
material you had left...

[RBW] Re: RCW Custom Ride Report

2014-05-08 Thread Michael
You are attaching the saddle to the eyelet loops on the saddle top, right? Not
on the rails below the springs, right.

The springs shouldn't interfere with bag installation to do this. Curl the tips
of the straps with your fingers and they will arc through the saddle eyelets ,
avoiding springs.

Flip your straps and try loading from the top, and also the bottom of eyelets
to see which direction clears springs best.

Takes a little practice, but works great when you get the hang of it. I use a
Carradice Peddle, and you can take off the straps to flip them. Don't know if
poss on the Sackvilles.
