Just curious how everyone here rides. There is no right or wrong way, of

[RBW] Re: Upcoming visit to the Bay Area - With bike - Recommendations?

2014-08-06 Thread Neil
Lots of good riding from Berkeley/Oakland, of course...the
already-mentioned Tunnel Road, Grizzly Peak, Redwood Road...Three Bears
loop is a good 'un, easily accessible from Berkeley...also, take BART to
Walnut Creek, ride Diablo, then ride home to Oakland if you're feeling
*grande*.

I definitely recommend Marin County. The Pt. Reyes populaire route by SF
Randos is a fantastic ride. You can shorten it up by going to Limantour
Beach instead of the lighthouse, but make sure you hit Bovine Bakery in Pt.
Reyes Station on the way back. Also, Bolinas-Fairfax Road from Fairfax gets
you to HWY 1 or to Mt. Tam. You can put together a sweet mixed terrain ride
taking Bo-Fax Road up to Bolinas Ridge (dirt), go north to Sir Francis
Drake, then back to Fairfax via the Cross Marin Trail (aka Magic
Carpet)...OR, go west on SFD into Olema, Pt. Reyes, etc., etc. Hard to do
too many miles in this beautiful corner of the world.

Here's a pro tip...take leave from a good East Bay loop (Three Bears will
do nicely) and grab lunch and a beer at the Warehouse Cafe in Port Costa.
Good anytime, Sunday afternoon recommended for live music and extreme cross
section of people.

For SF proper...all I ever ride is the Wiggle from downtown to the GG
bridge as a way to access Marin County. As an out-of-towner, I love that
ride, you see a terrific part of SF in a pedal-friendly fashion. On the way
back, decide on either Pier 39 tourist shenanigans, or Ocean Beach and GG
park.

Timely revisit!

Maybe others here know already but somehow I missed that Raceface now
offers a narrow wide tooth chainring that purportedly reduces chain
slipping in 1x set up. They come in 104, 110 and 130 bcd with a fair range
of tooth choices up to 44T (might go higher but that is highest I found).
So far all I've found is black only.

Price is reasonable so I bought one to check out. Will report after
receipt.

The price was cheaper than what they went for new back in the day. I thought

I figured it was my chance to get an affordable Rivbike new.

Nice pro tip! Need to check that out myself. I've lived in Oakland for 3
years and very rarely venture out of the routes I posted earlier (at least
in the east bay, i ride in the city and marin a bit too). I was watching
The Master the other night and looking up filming locations, certain that a
lot of it was in New England, but in fact a couple of the houses they use
were in Vallejo and nearby Crockett (right next to Port Costa). Didn't know
these places existed (I knew Vallejo obviously, but only as a pass through
to wine country by car). I think a ride is in order to the Warehouse Cafe.
I love California, so many places to explore.

[RBW] Re: One week without a front derailleur

2014-08-06 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've long entertained the idea of converting my 27-speed bike to a 1 x 9
and now that I have (successfully) built up another old frame as a
single-speed, I think I'm going to go thru with it. The steepest hills I'm
likely to ride 99.9% of the time were doable at @ 25 gear inches (26x28).
I calculate that just keeping my 36t center ring and switching my 11-28
cassette to an 11-34 or 12-34, I can get down to 28 gear inches.

I like the idea of functional simplicity and although I'm not truly a
weight weenie, I prefer a lighter bike over a heavier one. Finally, for
God only knows what reason, Shimano put a grey colored large ring on my
otherwise all black crankset. FUGLY. I thought about just changing to a
black outer ring or even a bashguard but the 1x9 concept has been brewing
in my brain for too long and needs to be indulged.

And Bill, don't despair.I'm planning to set up my newly built
single-speed with only a front brake! :)

On Sunday, June 15, 2014 7:12:45 AM UTC-5, Tony DeFilippo wrote:

I finally got curious enough to try removing my front shifting and trying
to go just my center 36T front ring w/ my 8 speed rear cassette. After a
full week of commuting and bopping around on my Saluki I'm a fan but there
 are some things that will need to happen.  Couple observations;

-My commute is very flat anyway, I've been doing it on and off single
speed on my XO3 anyway so reducing gears wasn't going to be a problem
-Not having to trim the front derailleur as I shift in the rear is the #1
 plus in my books
-As the week went on I made bolder multi cog shifts with my rear shifter
(silver friction shifter) which definitely added some pep and interest to
 my ride
-I'm not sure why it didn't happen till Th-Fri but I started dropping the
chain or ghost shifting the front chain off of the 36T...

I think I liked the benefits enough to pursue fixing the chain slippage...
I'm curious what others may have found as the best products as there are
plenty out there. I'm running a Sugino triple crank right now 24-36-46. I
 think I'd like to go either;

-single ring chain ring ~40T w/ chainkeeper
-keep the triple, put a ~40T in the middle, replace outer ring w/ chain
guard and install a chain guide/stop
-keep the triple as above, jury rig a FD to act as chainkeeper

I'm sure there must be others... any thoughts?

 Tony

I race cross with a single 42t up front and a 12-25 in the back. The
chainring is made by Wolf Tooth Components (what a name!), though there are
many other wide-narrow manufacturers now, such as Absolute Black, Sram,
others.. Wolf Tooth was the first to offer it in smaller BCDs for compact
cranks, which are 'cross friendly.

The wide-narrow ring idea is pretty self explanatory - every other tooth is
wider, so it takes up the extra space between the outer chain links. I've
been able to ride in my smallest cog (where the chain is the under the
least tension) over all kinds of rough and bumpy terrain. I can see and
hear my chain flapping all over the place, and have never dropped it once.
The benefit is also that you don't need a chain keeper at all, which gives
the bike a nice clean look, avoids jamming your chain into a keeper, and I
guess saves some inconsequential amount of weight.

I can't recommend them enough, it's been a great experience! I love riding
with a single up front.

 are some things that will need to happen.  Couple observations;

 think I'd like to go either;

-single ring chain ring ~40T w/ chainkeeper
-keep the triple, put a ~40T in the middle, replace outer ring w/ chain
guard and install a chain guide/stop
-keep the triple as above, jury rig a FD to act as chainkeeper

I'm sure there must be others... any thoughts?

Fantastic, Tony! That really looks great!

In my own experiment, I did quite a few miles of trail and road where I
needed my granny on my Continental Divide trip. So much as I'd love a 1x9
set up, I'm keeping the triple (the outer ring is essential a rock guard
for me, as the chipped teeth attest to! Sardonic grin.).

Re: [RBW] Re: Do you ride your drop bars above, at, or below saddle height on your Rivbikes?

2014-08-06 Thread Tim Gavin
I have moustache bars on my Riv Road, slightly above the saddle height. My
Riv is set up as a 650b tourer/commuter/all-rounder.

I have drops on two other bikes:
B135 Randonneur bars on my Schwinn KOM, at saddle height. The KOM is a
fast gravel cruiser.

B115 standard drops on my Giordana, slightly below saddle height. The
Giordana is a civilized racer, my gofast.

I'm considering changing my Riv back to drops, which would probably be set
at saddle height. Probably Noodles, and Campy 8spd Ergos if I can find a
good pair of brifters. Their ratio shifts a 7-speed freewheel too. I have
Sachs-branded 8spd Campy Ergos on my Giordana, and they work great.

[RBW] Cyclotouring Lake Champlain and Montreal

2014-08-06 Thread jandrews_nyc
I had a trip planned in 2010 to bike from NYC to Montreal with my wife.
Two weeks before the trip she was hit by a car and severely broke her leg.
4 years (and 3 surgeries later) we are going to do that trip..although
slightly differently.

This Sunday we will drive to the Lake Champlain region in VT with some
friends and bikes and cycle-camp for 4 days and nights around the lake, in
the lake, and east of the lake into VT.
Then we will head north to Montreal and wine and dine there for another 4
days.

I have a tentative route planned but am curious if anyone on the list has
biked around Lake Champlain or has any suggested excursions/routes that are
less pedestrian bike path and more incredible nature trail, hard pack or
pavement rides.
We plan on averaging about 50 miles a day…with plenty of time for swimming
and setting up camp.
Also, does anyone have any suggestions on rides in our just outside of
Montreal?

I'll be on my S.H. and She''ll be on a BG BLT.

thanks
Jason

Handlebars on the Roadeo are about at saddle level, maybe a cm above which
makes the drops several inches lower than saddle. I like using the drops to
stretch my back out and generally ride on the hoods.

Mark,

Great info on the Wolf Tooth (I also love the name!). I had looked at
these rings before the WI crank fell into my lap... I might look at one of
those for my single speed although I haven't had any chain keeping issues.
I was also looking at the surly stainless rings as they have tall tooth
profiles and aren't ramped/pinned.

I can't tell you all how oddly satisfying it is to look down at the single
chainring crank. It shouldn't really fascinate me as much as it does... I
do feel that my 1x8 shifting is crisper since the new crank but I also
replaced the cassette and chain so the cause of the better shifting is
definitely spread among those multiple upgrades.

[RBW] Re: Fat tire Atlantis!

2014-08-06 Thread iamkeith
That looks so good! So I have a question for you:

Almost every bike I've bought in the last 10 years or so has been as a
substitute/proxy for the Atlantis that I really want, because I seem to
fall squarely between Atlanti sizes. But, since I know that I would set it
up with the biggest possible knobby tires that I could fit - like you've
done here - I've always wondered how that would affect the feel and fit.
In other words, would the big tires make an otherwise slightly-to-small
frame feel just right? Or would they make an otherwise slightly-too-big
frame completely unworkable?

I've never seen any comments from someone who's done it both ways,
regarding the change to ride/feel/fit. Obviously, standover is the
biggest issue, but I'd be interested hearing any other impressions that
could give me a push in the right direction.

(For reference, the two sizes I would consider but don't quite fit are 58
and 61)

to me. The entire ride is on a mix of single track, Jeep trails, double
track and some gravel roads. The route winds through a Canadian National
Park, with wild bison and a ton of black bears roaming around. It should be
fantastic! (Definitely will share a ride report after)

The catch is that it's been raining a lot and the ground is soft. So I
thought I'd put some fatter tires on the Atlantis. I replaced the Bruce
Gordon Rock n Roads with some 2.1 WTB Nano tires. It took a bit of
tweaking to make the brake pads avoid rubbing the sidewall when they were
released and I also had to move the Nitto Campee rack to the front/upper
eyelets in order to clear the tread. However, WOW what a fun switch! This
thing is sooo cushy. And to my amazement it rolls much faster and easier
than with the Bruce Gordon's. I took it out on an evening ride and got a
lot of interest and enthusiasm from perplexed cyclists starring at the
freak of nature fat-tire drop-bar contraption I was riding. I think these
 will be here to stay.

But now I'm curious... could I fit 2.25?

Here are a few photos of the fat setup:

Almost every bike I've bought in the last 10 years or so has been as a

set it up with the biggest possible knobby tires that I could fit
- like you've done here - I've always wondered how that would affect
the feel and fit. In other words, would the big tires make
an otherwise slightly-to-small frame feel just right? Or would they
make an otherwise slightly-too-big frame completely unworkable?

I've never seen any comments from someone who's done it both ways,
regarding the change to ride/feel/fit. Obviously, standover is the
biggest issue, but I'd be interested hearing any other
impressions that could give me a push in the right direction.

(For reference, the two sizes I would consider but don't quite fit are
58 and 61)

Have you ever considered getting a custom Riv with Atlantis geometry
tubing, only sized to fit you?

And my bars are 3 cm below saddle for the Maes Paralells (shallow drop),
perhaps 2 1/2 cm for the Noodles; 2 cm above for the Fargo.

I was also looking at the surly stainless rings as they have tall tooth

I can't tell you all how oddly satisfying it is to look down at the

I also replaced the cassette and chain so the cause of the better shifting

[RBW] Re: Upcoming visit to the Bay Area - With bike - Recommendations?

Does anyone know of a way to store bike cases at the airport? Ideally, I
could get off the plane, assemble the bike and stash the travel case there,
instead of hauling the packed bike all the way to Berkeley.

I see that some BART stations have lockers, and the travel company at SFO
offers this service, but it's obscenely expensive for a 10-day duration
(like, $400 or something).

Any ideas on that?

Once a guy made a back handed compliment to me about my Sam during a
century ride that he had respect for anyone who could ride a steel bike
 that far.

Afterwards I was thinking that:
He looked to weigh about 250lbs. and on a probably 16-19lb. carbonic bike.
I was about 175 and on my Sam, which was about 23 lbs. when I first
weighed it when I got it.

I don't know what makes a bike fast. Clipless tires, skinny high pressure
framesets, carbonic/aluminum pedals - all the zeitgeists have never made me
faster.

I tend to think it is the engine.
For instance:
Freddie Hoffman averages 18mph on his 100lb. loaded bike. And I am sure any
TdeF rider could beat me in a race if I had his bike and he had mine.

[RBW] Re: Cyclotouring Lake Champlain and Montreal

2014-08-06 Thread Michael Hechmer
Kind of short notice for a detailed answer but here are some thoughts.
Contact Local Motion or the Vt Bike Pedestrian Coalition for good bike
maps. Local Motion has run tours, VT to Montreal, so they must have good
route ideas.

When you get to L. Champlain in Addison Co. stay off 116 and instead
follow Lake Rd. On Grand Isle, avoid Rt 2 as much as possible (windy
busy) and instead follow West Lake Drive, then East Lake Drive. Do stop at
Hero's Welcome in N. Hero for lunch.

I don't live far from the lake but mostly bike the back roads of Franklin
Co. Great scenery, and very little traffic, but away from the lake.

I'm on my way home from biking the Erie Canal in western NY, but will try
to think some more about this. What's your current thinking?

This Sunday we will drive to the Lake Champlain region in VT with some

the lake, and east of the lake into VT.
Then we will head north to Montreal and wine and dine there for another 4

I have a tentative route planned but am curious if anyone on the list has
biked around Lake Champlain or has any suggested excursions/routes that are
less pedestrian bike path and more incredible nature trail, hard pack or
 pavement rides.
We plan on averaging about 50 miles a day…with plenty of time for swimming
 and setting up camp.
Also, does anyone have any suggestions on rides in our just outside of
 Montreal?

I'll be on my S.H. and She''ll be on a BG BLT.

And my bars are 3 cm below saddle for the Maes Paralells (shallow drop),
perhaps 2 1/2 cm for the Noodles; 2 cm above for the Fargo.

I was surprised at the feel of the White Industries cranks, too. They

when I was in the higher/smaller gear in the back. It was actually pretty
consistent even w/ a fairly short chain.

I was just about to order a set of Surly Stainless chainrings, 40 or 42T

WOW this crank/chainring is sweet. I love the look both from on and off
the bike and I love the feel. I went ahead and changed out the chain and
cassette at the same time. The Saluki does deserve a new derailleur at
some point but this exage salvaged off my XO-3's original equipment is
doing fine for now. So far so good w/ chain jump, I may end up adding a
Paul chain keeper just in case but for now the combo of SS chainring and
new chain is working good and solid.

I was also looking at the surly stainless rings as they have tall tooth
 profiles and aren't ramped/pinned.

I can't tell you all how oddly satisfying it is to look down at the
single chainring crank. It shouldn't really fascinate me as much as it
does... I do feel that my 1x8 shifting is crisper since the new crank but
I also replaced the cassette and chain so the cause of the better shifting
is definitely spread among those multiple upgrades.

Not a Heron, but a similar vintage Rivendell with the same issue.

My '97 Riv Road fits a 700x28 max, with less than 2 mm to spare under the
brake bridge. Even though the brochure says it should clear a 35.

This made it a good candidate (in my mind) for 650b conversion. Now it
fits 38's!

That's what I think, too. What I need to be happy and fast on the bike:
Good fit, decent tires, no weird noises from the bike.

[RBW] Re: Fat tire Atlantis!

2014-08-06 Thread dougP
Almost every bike I've bought in the last 10 years or so has been as a
substitute/proxy for the Atlantis that I really want, because I seem to
fall squarely between Atlanti sizes..
(For reference, the two sizes I would consider but don't quite fit are 58
and 61)

According to the Atlantis sizing charts, there is overlap among sizes. For
instance, if your PBH is between 84 to 89, a 58 cm is suggested, and if
your PBH is between 87 to 93, a 61 cm. So if your PBH is 87 to 89, you
could ride either. For instance, my PBH is 84-85 so I got a 58 but could
also ride a 56. I've ridden a 56 for a short distance it felt pretty
good. It had honkin' 2.1 WTB tires, while my 58 is on 38 mm Soma C-lines.

The Atlantis is a versatile design so I would not expect the ride/feel/fit
to change a great deal. The 700c wheel size is intended for tires 35 mm to
50 mm. Mine came with 35 mm Paselas which were really a bit under 35 mm
wide. I've also had 45 50 mm Schwalbes on it. Other than stand-over
height, I couldn't detect any change in fit. The heavier tires of course
affect performance but handling seemed similar (but I don't push the
handling envelope at all).

So if a 58 cm feels just a bit smallish, setting it up with the biggest
tires you can fit should bring it up a bit. OTH, doing the same thing with
a 61 may be too much. With stems seatposts, you can always fudge the
size up (within reason). Shrinkage is more problematic. Hope that helps.

up with the biggest possible knobby tires that I could fit - like you've
done here - I've always wondered how that would affect the feel and fit.
In other words, would the big tires make an otherwise slightly-to-small
frame feel just right? Or would they make an otherwise slightly-too-big
 frame completely unworkable?

I've never seen any comments from someone who's done it both ways,
regarding the change to ride/feel/fit. Obviously, standover is the
biggest issue, but I'd be interested hearing any other impressions that
could give me a push in the right direction.

and some gravel roads. The route winds through a Canadian National Park,
with wild bison and a ton of black bears roaming around.

[RBW] Re: Fat tire Atlantis!

2014-08-06 Thread Bill Lindsay
Doug's right. I have a 87 PBH, and I'd buy a 58, but I could do just fine
on a 61. I've ridden both (multiple times). I still want one. Sometimes
I think I should sell my Bombadil to finance a Fatlantis, but then I start
to miss the Bombadil. I have already sold my Hillborne to finance a
Fatlantis, but regretted it and lucked into buying it back.

Ha, you guys are a bunch of weight weenies! :)

There are no weenier weight weenies than the Camping weight weenies, so I
set up a minimalist S24O kit. I took my 27 lb double speed (with HA
Panniers) and added:

Hammock + sleeping bag + VBL + stuffable pillow
stove + pot + utensils + cup + coffee kit + firestarters
parka + skull cap + tights + nighshirt headlamp
can opener beer opener bandana

34.0 lbs with no food and no water, and no whiskey.

I can substitute my solo tent and thermarest for my hammock and add 750g.

there is no specific plan in place at the moment.

I think White's mindset is more single speed where wide/narrow does not
make a difference.
