[RBW] Re: Sams versatility
A sam would be perfect for this kind of riding. If you were riding more trails and possibly singletrack dirt-type stuff I would opt for a Hunq, or if you were thinking of doing some extended touring I would opt for the Atlantis or Hunq, but for the stuff you are talking about the Sam is itor the Hilsen. I have a Sam and my friend has a Hilsen and I find them both really nice looking but the Hilsen has a little fancier lugs. Not sure on ride differences because his bike is too big for me. I got a Roadeo last year to take over fast road riding that I had my Sam doing, then I turned the Sam into my commuter/trail bike. I haven't ridden it all that much since I've been riding that Roadeo so much, but now I'm thinking of turning the Sam into a kind of mountain bike. It's just a really versatile frame. Can't really go wrong with it. One thing the Hilsen has that the Sam doesn't is downtube shifter bosses...if you are interested in downtube shifting, then the Hilsen might be a better choice. [RBW] Re: Sams versatility
Sam can do it all, and would be the least expensive choice. A Hilsen would be fancier, but functionally the same as the Sam. The Atlantis and the Hunq would also be great, too, especially if you were always going to do lots of loaded mileage or tons of non-technical singletrack. I have a Bomba, and it's my 'do anything' bike; but before I got it, I would even ride the Virginia Creeper Trail on my Rambouillet. Now, my Ram has been relegated to more randoish rides, and I've got a canti-Rom (very similar frame to the Ram, but one of the ones with cantilevers instead); since I've gotten the canti-Rom, I've ended up using it for most of my trailish rides, since I've gone to the 40 MSOs on it. Any Riv can handle any of that riding, but, the Sam is an excellent starting point for consideration... A 32-38mm slick was not really ideal equipment for riding this stretch. I had one friend riding 700x32mm Grand Bois, one running 700x32mm Stampede Pass and me running 650x38mm LoupLoups. There was quite a bit of sand and soft dirt, along with some gravel and some paved stretches. Our back tires kept sliding sideways when we were trying to ride through the soft dirt and sand, and we would have to correct. Thankfully none of us went down, but a couple of times it was close. It was worse for my friends on the 32s than for me but it still felt real squirrely on the wider tires. What I really want for this ride is something that rolls good on pavement but has some tread to it in order to prevent the rear end slide-outs on soft dirt and sand. But not so much tread that it digs itself into soft surfaces. The Soma Cazadero would be about perfect I think. http://www.somafab.com/archives/product/cazadero-tires-700c650b-x-42mm BUT...my Redwood has 700C wheels and will not fit 700x42. It would fit 650Bx42 but I have not converted it at this time. I think 700Cx38 would probably fit if I removed the fenders, which I would probably want to do anyway as to not get mud stuck up in them. Any suggestions? Re: [RBW] Re: FT - Looking for Noodles and SA saddle
The midge bars are great with bar-end shifters. You just need to be careful since the bars have so much flare - they tend to bump into things. But the shifters give a little extra room for your hands in the drops. Dan On Jan 28, 2015, at 6:45 AM, Jayme Frye jayme.f...@gmail.com wrote: Any idea if the Midge will accept bar end shifters? [RBW] Re: Wald Basket Mod
Edwin Yes, when I finished installing the finders, basket, etc, I decided there was still a chance for upspray from my tire onto the underside of my basket cargo and also onto the front dynamo headlamp. I've used heavy plastic film for a couple DIY projects and I have a stack of that material. I've acquired this heavy plastic film in three ways: 1. I bought a sheet at TAP plastics 2. I've deconstructed file folder products from the Office Supply store (generally upcycled items discarded at my office) 3. The Elfa brand shelving that I've run in several closets in my home came with plastic shelf liners. I've decided not to line every shelf I installed, but kept the extras for future projects I took one sheet of my stockpile material and made a little rack topper. This augments the fender and protects everything that is on top of the rack from spray. Here's another photo of that SPLASHGUARD https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/15432172994/ with a caption describing it. [RBW] Re: Anyone doing the EBDJ Wednesday Challenge?
I've gone nearly a month now on the EBDJ diet regimen. No big cravings, no problems. But I do find it difficult to actually ingest 2,500 calories per day--especially if all I have for breakfast is coffee with butter and/or coconut oil in it. Yes, I know I could load up on cheese and avocado and Greek yogurt and yet more coconut oil, but dang. No wonder people lose weigh on this diet! :) But seriously, if you-all have suggestions and/or recipes for easy low-carb meals, please post them. Here's one of mine. 1 lb. grass-fed hamburger 1 onion, chopped 5 cloves garlic, chopped 1 bunch of spinach, roughly chopped (or one package of frozen spinach) 7 eggs, lightly beaten seasoning (salt, pepper, hot sauce . . . ) Thoroughly brown the burger in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add a generous pinch of salt as you cook it. Set burger aside. Add onion and garlic to pan and cook, stirring occasionally, for about two or three minutes to soften. Turn heat to medium, put the hamburger back in the pan, and then add the spinach. (If the spinach is frozen, thaw it and drain it in a sieve--press the water out of it--before adding it to the pan.) Cook the burger/onion/spinach mixture for about one or two minutes, with the lid on the pan, until the spinach is slightly wilted and warmed through. Add a few dashes of hot sauce to the eggs and then pour the eggs into the pan. Stir gently and sporadically until the eggs are incorporated and cooked through. Season as you wish. Serve. This dish is called Joe's Special or Joe's Scramble. It looks like a mess but it tastes good. Substitute kale or chard for spinach and that works, too. Evan E. Evan, shift your thinking about a meal centering around the protein to thinking about the meal being surrounded by fat. Cream. Bacon. Tallow. Butter. For your burger, for example, buy it 85% lean, and include all the fat. Fat is not a waste to be chucked. It's the goodness to be consumed. I followed the Riv video for trimming with twine and it worked beautifully. The way they make the end disappear is slick. I bought two rolls of it and barely put a dent in one roll. [RBW] Re: Towards a new category: high performance upright
I'm also on board with this perspective. Personally, I think I was hung up on drop bars, thinking that they were the apparent default road bars because it had been determined they were versatile, comfortable and just the best for serious cycling. I assumed that I just needed to dial things in to reach a level of comfort and natural control of the bike. That never really happened and I'm now wondering if I'm just best off with what feels best, and honestly admit that is usually Albas or some kind of swept-back city bars with mountain-type brake levers. I recently built up a new Rambouillet with Albas and it may very well stay that way. BUT BUT - it's a ROAD BIKE! You can't do that! But really, if it feels right, why not? Just adding my experiences to this. Been doing the eating part since mid October 2014. Added kettlebell and convict conditioning in November 2014. To date I dropped 23 pounds and am able to do more sit-ups, pull-ups, push-ups, and squats than ever before. Blood pressure, blood work, etc. was deemed really good by any standard by the doctor earlier this month (not that I was ever told it was bad, but it was still nice to hear). Mid November I went for one of my standard rides and felt like crap logging some of my worst times ever. Early January I did the same ride again and broke almost every personal record feeling great. In addition instead of my usual hammer bar an hour I was fine riding on half a banana for 4 hours. We will see how 12+ hour rides go, but so far so good. It does take time to adapt but for me it has been totally worth it at least so far. In terms of calories I don't worry much. I eat when hungry, drink when thirsty. Dinner was bacon with Brussel sprouts, onions, and egg. The kids had seconds and asked if we could have this again tomorrow. [RBW] Re: Upright bar build question - shellacked cloth tape to match cork grips
Jim, This is a photo https://www.flickr.com/photos/smudgemo/14976685554/ of my drop bars wrapped in Yellow tape and coated in a garnet shellac. The tops got darker over time and I personally think they look very nice. This is a photo https://www.flickr.com/photos/smudgemo/6900246567/in/set-72157627356608413 of my wife's shellac'd cork grips, and I probably used a dark shellac like garnet on them, too. Even a dark shellac doesn't color the surface as much as you might expect. I also disagree with Meisha. If you don't coat them with some sort of sealer, they'll look dirty quickly. Nothing wrong with it if you like the look, but it's not my thing. If you do shellac them, they may feel tacky when it's warm and you're sweating, but I never regretted cork/shellac. Liquid nails is plenty strong enough to hold them in place, and you will find plenty of other uses for it as a glue. I bought a bunch of different colors of shellac from shellac.net once upon a time - I think it might have been a sampler pack. You mix only what you need (and experiment with mixing colors) and a whole can of store-bought won't go to waste since you really only use very little for a bike even if you do bar tape, the hemp ends, and hemp chain stay protection. I like shellac a lot. Keep the rest in a glass jar and reapply whenever you get the urge. Now that I think of it, my wife's cork grips are beat up on the ends and could use a touch-up... -Ryan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I've put a lot of miles on the 37mm New Xpress tires, which do fine by me on firm dirt and packed gravel. I imagine the Paselas would feel pretty similar. [RBW] Re: Anyone doing the EBDJ Wednesday Challenge?
Deacon: I've only counted calories for one day. Here's what I discovered: BREAKFAST: 3 eggs cooked in one heaping tablespoon of butter, plus coffee with one tablespoon of coconut oil. 440 calories LUNCH: 7 ounces canned pink salmon with 1 tablespoon olive oil. 300 calories DINNER: Four hefty chicken thighs, baked, with skin on, plus a large plateful of kale cooked in ghee. 640 calories That's a total of 1,380 calories, give or take. Since I am already (to use Grant's expression from his book) thin as a clothesline, it seems clear that I'll need to eat even more olive oil, butter, bacon, Greek yogurt, avocados, critter, dark chocolate, coconut oil, etc. I'm willing to do that, but I still have to wonder how so many Americans manage to consume 2,500 calories--or more--each day. (For the record: I didn't even think to count calories until, about ten days into the EBDJ diet, I noticed my jeans were especially baggy. Decided it might be good to do some counting.) [RBW] Upright bar build question - shellacked cloth tape to match cork grips
I would like to get some cloth tape to use with some albatross-like bars (Soma Oxford) that have Miesha's corkgrips on them, to achieve this sort of look as seen on Rivendell's site: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/m4.htm Note that, I'm not planning to shellac the grips themselves because of some feedback I got from Miesha herself on the phone the other day. She didn't like the shellac on the grips. Anyway, what color tape should I start with before the shellac? White, beige, or something else? Also, since I'm on the subject of the build on my wifey's new to her frame, What adhesive did you use for the cork grips? Seems like if that form of Permatex worked, that any kind of Permatex RTV might work. (I used to have lots of RTV around back in the day when I had a Honda that required valve adjustment every 15K, the gasket would leak on reinstallation unless you put a drop of RTV in the corners. Thanks everyone! Bill, that is a fantastic idea. I think those kickstand bolts are M10 though? (I'm not at home to check). Now I just have to work out what an M8/M10 setscrew is in French... I'm actually pretty impressed with the kickstand. I have 60 mm tyres, a triple crankset and a relatively narrow chainline (107 mm BB). The kickstand is super stable AND fails to interfere with tyres, chain, cranks or RD cable. Yeah, the blind hole is a bummer and I already shortened the bolt significantly, but I don't think a through bolt would work with the way it's designed. Bill, nice mod! I was thinking about putting a basket on my Hilsen was wondering what the wheel flop was like when loaded? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. That's pretty brilliant. Chapeau, sir! On Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 11:14:59 PM UTC-6, Bill Lindsay wrote: I was WOWED by Jenny's sweet Wald Basket chop-job featured on the BLUG. The back corners of the basket were crowding my fingers when I rode in the drops. Rather than copy Jenny, I decided to put my own twist on the idea. [RBW] Re: Wald Basket Mod
I don't quite know how to respond to you Brian. I've never had any problem with a heavy front load on any high-trail bike. I can ride my Atlantis No-handed, but I haven't tried that with the basket plus panniers. I don't know why it works for me, when you see wailing handwringers all over this and similar forums that telling you that if you put a 2lb handlebar bag on a Rivendell it will randomly lurch you off the side of the road because the front end geometry is SOOO BAD. That hasn't been the case for me. Maybe the random 90-degree right turn will happen today? I say try it and go with your gut. Some people say a front load ruined their bike. Some people claim their low trail bike is ruined WITHOUT a front load. Some people expect their bikes to be slalom-quick, even when loaded, and have different expectations than I do. [RBW] Towards a new category: high performance upright
Some musings and hopefully the first of a few posts on the subject: http://handlebarchronicles.blogspot.com/2015/01/high-performance-upright-towards-new.html Further thought for this list: my thinking about this category is directly informed, if not wholly made possible, by Grant and Rivendell's work. I want to take what they've done and talk about it more broadly as a category, as I believe there are many of us love this type of bike, Rivendell devotees or no. I hope to devote a future post to the intellectual antecedents of my category, including Grant but also Mike Flanigan/ANT, old Raleighs, early MTB's, etc. Your thoughts and comments much appreciated. -jeremy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
