[RBW] Re: Brooks Saddle Repair - Broken Tension Shackle

2015-05-04 Thread Mike On A Bike
I had a tension bolt crack on my B17 back in 2011 and Brooks covered it under
warranty for me. They directed me to contact Hanford Cycles in Philadelphia,
who expediently replaced the bolt. The contact info I have from the warranty
claim email had the email address as hanfordcyc...@gmail.com and Simon Firth
was the guy I was in contact with over there. Best of luck keeping the leather
alive!

[RBW] Re: 51cm Sam Hillborne build: advice?

2015-05-04 Thread Lungimsam
You should also measure the width of your fork blades. Sometimes this is the
limiting factor.
FOr instance, Honjo H-50 fenders fit in the Tektro R559 brakes great on my
Bleriot, but I only have about 1mm of airspace between the sides of the fenders
and the inside of the fork blades. So they just make it. Can't use any wider
fenders than that.

[RBW] Need to 3D-scan Rivendell Atlantis in NYC area for ShareRoller electric bike mount

2015-05-04 Thread Jeff Guida
Hello everyone,

I am the creator of ShareRoller, a portable, detachable electric friction
drive system for bicycles and scooters. ShareRoller requires a
custom-designed adaptor mount to be used on many bikes, and I have an
out-of-state customer with a Rivendell Atlantis for whom we need to design
such a mount.

The process is pretty simple - we use our 3D scanning system to scan the
fork/wheel area of the bike, then design the adaptor mount in AutoCAD, then
3D print the mount.

We'd need about 2 hrs with your bike to scan it and would be willing to pay
$ to 'rent' it briefly, or if you're interested in a ShareRoller for your
own Atlantis, we could work out something on that end as well. We could do
the scanning at your location so your bike wouldn't be 'out of sight', or
we're happy to pick it up and return it if that's easier. Please note that
your bike wouldn't be ridden or used in any way - it's essentially a photo
shoot, but for CAD data instead of pics!

Please let me know if anyone is interested.

Thanks!

[RBW] FS: Bottom Brackets 107, 110, 113

2015-05-04 Thread RDS
I have 3 bottom brackets for sale. 68 x 107 and 68 x 113 is the Shimano
BB-UN55. 68 x 110 is IRD Quad model QB75. The 107 and 110 were purchased
from Riv. All of these are the type of bottom bracket that Riv would sell.

I just had my first attempt at building up my first bike. As you can see
by the extra bottom brackets that I amassed, it was a learning process.
None of the bottom brackets were ever ridden. Each bottom bracket was
installed on the frame and the crank was installed one or more times. So,
each spindle will show markings where the Sugino XD2 Triple crank and crank
arm were installed and removed. So, the only use they got was when I was
pedalling the bike by hand while in the repair stand. So, these are about
as new as you can get other than the markings/scratches where the crank was
installed.

For each, I will do $30 and that will include me shipping it to you USPS
Priority mail (unless you prefer another shipping method). I will only
ship to the 48 contiguous states in the USA. No international shipping.

Email if you want to see pics. It may be Tuesday morning before I will
email the pics as it is late her in Georgia.

Re: [RBW] Wrenching Apron

2015-05-04 Thread Patrick Moore
I have two: One nice dark green one from Rowland's Nursery, where I worked
a part time second job 11 years ago, before the company folded -- thick
cotton canvas with 3 front pockets and long enough to protect; and in
second place my deceased father's barbeque apron, only 1 pocket but even
longer -- wadded up behind Stevie's counter; hope it isn't lost.

(I've got a neck to mid-shin, heavy cotton apron in bright yellow with
flowers, bought on remainder at Rowland's, but that's my cooking apron.)

My question is: what do you wear to keep your hair and sweat from getting
into your eyes while wrenching? I need a second Rivendell cycling cap -- my
only one stays in the car for open window driving.

[RBW] Re: Brake Squeal

2015-05-04 Thread hsmitham
Deacon,

I had this same problem with my slimline koolstop Salmon pads mounted on my
Atlantis. I decided to replace them with new
http://www.koolstop.com/english/supra2.html

I went with a shorter pad because I felt it would be easier to toe, for me that
proved to be the case.

I agree with John about using Grant's trick of securing the brakes to the rim
during adjustment, I however disagree with sanding rims and pads. Beyond the
toe issue the main culprit is dirty rim surface and brake pad surface. I'm
assuming here that you decided to replace the pads because of brake squeal in
the first place. And since you ride through some pretty rough terrain, snow,
mud/dirt and water there has to be a bunch of dirt on your rims. But now even
after replacing the pads and cleaning the rim the squeal remains. Like me you
assumed it was a toe in issue/mechanic error. A friend advised me to use
lacquer thinner and a green scrub pad to clean both rim surface and now that
you've used the pads the pads also. The lacquer thinner will not leave a
residue and will properly remove the dirt and grease embedded in both surfaces.
Don't confuse other types of thinners as my friend advised they are petroleum
based and will leave a residue.

Lastly, on toe. Really the other poster has it right, just lay the pads flat
against the rim snug the nut then do your toe it doesn't need a lot just eye
ball it as long as the front meets the rim surface first it'll be fine. Take
your time it's like meditation.

Let us know how it works out.

I just spoke to the powdercoater... Sounds like the color is on and repeatedly
looks great, british racing green and cream. He is not sure about my request
to have it finished flat so he's trying to get a sample done before we commit.
I'm excited, can't wait to get it back on the road.

Re: [RBW] Re: New custom bag from David Banzer/Treetop Bags

2015-05-04 Thread Patrick Moore
571 bead seat diameter is called 650C (though someone just said this
nomenclature refers not to tubulars but only to clinchers -- which in true
terminal exactitude aren't really clinchers but "wired ons" (Sheldon!) --
though in my case it's not "wire).

Aside: Jan's proposed 559 tires bridge the annoying gap between 650C --
nothing fatter than 23 mm -- and 559 -- hitherto, no really top of the line
tires of racing quality and design (ie, very supple and very light).
Kojaks are close but no cigar.

[RBW] Any doing Oregon Outback?

2015-05-04 Thread Mike Shaljian
Wish I was! I haven't had a chance to get in any shorter "practice" bikepacking
tours, so I'm not going to take on the Xtreme logistical challenge that the
Outback seems to be. The whole not ending up where you started deal definitely
puts a bit of a damper on this route for me, though I'm sure it would be easy
enough to coordinate a ride back with others if doing the "official" ride.
Thing is, I don't have a sense of how long I'd want to take with this, probably
4 days personally, but a friend who was interested in riding with me was
thinking 5-6.

In lieu of this, I'm planning to do the Steens Mountain route from VeloDirt at
some point in July to get a good Oregon tour in. Also planning to ride the
Oregon Stampede route soon to discover the Dalles.

Yay summer! Yay bikepacking! I'm rooting for all those planning to gut out the
367 miles!

Subject: [RBW] FS: Size 61 Canti-Romulus, built in 2006. $850

#yiv1104706249 I am selling the first Rivendell that I ever purchased new.It is
a 61 cm frame, built up in April of 2006. I purchased it on April 8,2006. It
has long been one of my favorite Riv’s, but I have not ridden it toooften in
the past few years, mainly because it still has drop bars. I muchprefer Alba’s
these days, which all my other bikes now have.  I just can’t see this frame
without theNoodles that it came with. It really is a road bike, and most of my
rides thesedays are commutes or fireroads. The RBW descriptive about this frame
was :  “The Romulus is a road frame, virtually interchangeablewith the
Rambouillet, and it rides dreamily. But if you're reasonably skillfuland have
reasonable judgement, you'll find it a delight on fire trails as well(with
appropriate tires). The cantilver brakes open up the area under thecrown, and
let's a lot of things happen there. When you pick your parts fromthis list,
we'll make sure they all add up to a smart, working bike. Anyquestions, just
ask, we're happy to answer anything. Toe clip overlap willhappen on 55cm & 57cm
frames, depending on your tire, and fenders. It's nota big deal, not worth
fretting about, and most certainly is not a design goof. But some folks can't
live with it, and if you're among 'em don't get one ofthese. SIZING: Refer to
page 76 in the catalogue, to get your PBH. Your framesize is PBH minus 25 to
27. If minus 25 lands you on a 61 and minus 27 says a59.” I have about 3800
miles on the frame and drivetrain. I don’tbaby my bikes, so it has reasonable
beausage, but no dents. Always garaged.Mechanically, I take good cars of my
bikes. However, I don’t wash and cleanthem often, and barely did a cursory
wipe-down to prep for this sale. Just notmy thing. The longest single ride I
took on this frame was an Oregoncoast ride in 2007.  I also haveridden it in
several local centuries. I am asking $850 + cost of shipping.  If you live
within 30 minutes of myhome in San Francisco (near the Golden Gate Bridge) I
will bring it to you.PayPal is OK, otherwise a cashiers check from USPS.

Tony,

I've not done a taste test of our organic cotton bandana material my wife
sews the filters from, but they sure work great. Or, yes, just use a
bandana and don't mess with sewing it into the cone shape (but a bandana is
a lot bigger than the Helix needs, or a full sized drip cone for that
matter). She also made me a tea infusion bag for my Scottish breakfast tea,
so I'm all set! Grin.

[RBW] Re: FS: 1985 Trek 420 Sport Touring - lugged Waterloo-made goodness. Nitto, Brooks, n' more. and 26" conversion final report.

2015-05-04 Thread cbone97
It could clear, just barely, a 1.75" Conti Town and Country (ie no knobs)
in the rear. Maybe 2-3 mm per side at the chainstays. The front fork could
probably do a 2".

I have little to no experience with fenders so not sure how this would
change things, but the chainstays were chock full with a 1.75" tire, so
guessing maybe a 1.5" or so with fenders?

I sold this frame locally. Now looking back at the pics and kinda wishing
I hadn't! Thanks for the kind words...now who wants to buy a pair of giant

Y'all help out a clueless photo app/attachment/doohickey user.

First, I bailed on Picassa a couple of years ago after they (IMEO) f*
it up by making it harder to use and requiring something or other from me
that I now forget and that I didn't want to give them. (I also want to bail
on Google, but that's harder to do. Gawdarn feature creep!)

Here's my question:

Is hooking photos to the email in the way Jim described below, as with my
recent FS posts, instead of pasting the photo directly into the body of the
email, GOOD or BAD?

Patrick "we got no links" Moore, with beetled brow furrowed in concentrated
exasperation. (I have attache a photo using this method to illustrate my
question.)

Got mine too! Very fast shipping. It's a great looking cup, definitely
'petite' size compared to my normal in house mug's but I think it'll do

Patrick and others, are you using a piece of cloth instead of filters for

[RBW] Re: [BOB] Photos: please consider providing link rather than attachment

2015-05-04 Thread tarik saleh
Yeah, wow, in an admittedly unscientific study, I just deleted all the Bob,
RBW and CR mail since April 14, 2015, so not even a month since I dumped 10
GB of material. iBob and RBW were at ~100MB each, CR was at something like
300 MB. Again, for less than a month, that is half a GB of email traffic.
Anyhow, from old school email dynamics that is a complete travesty, but
again, it is not sitting on a drive in Alex's basement anymore, so the more
the merrier I guess.

I usually delete CR a few times a year, but I do value quick easy mailbox
searches on Ibob and RBW as there is content I value more often, but again
we are looking at 1GB of email a year EACH from ibob and RBW. Which is not
text. That is images. I don't download images on my phone unless I want
them, but it seems like we are way beyond a tipping point.

So I think the cat is out of the bag and we won't go back the way it was
and it will only get worse, so I think whatever plan I used to have is
invalid, carry on into the future you image attaching peoples.

RE: [RBW] I love my Quickbeam.

2015-05-04 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
I’m not sure – I bought the frame on special from Riv. They called it red,
which isn’t really accurate. Or if it’s accurate, it would have to be a VERY
deep red. I’d describe it as maroon. It’s a good color for a QB – very
understated, and I like the cream headtube as a contrast.

Of course I’m not offended – have at it! I think there’s an old Riv mixte in
roughly that color somewhere on Flickr, if I remember rightly.

And thanks for the kind words!

Pudge...I know I've complimented you on that burgundy colour, or maroon , or
whatever it is called. What is that colour , exactly? I just love it!

If you are not offended that is one of the colours I'm contemplating for my

I had over 10 GB in Ibob and RBW and CR lists in my gmail box (I went from
15GB to 5GB after deleting the entirety of those 3 folders) which really
is 100% due to people attaching photos to the email list. I think attaching

bizarre complaints about trouble replying directly to the sender off list,
many many people seem to use the google group interface.

So I think David's complaint is valid, but i suspect it is a completely
lost cause. Not sure there is a good solution for those of us who are used
to old email list style management. The google group interface is awful in
my experience, especially for how I like to interact with the lists, but I

[RBW] Re: Six Pillars Century Ride Cambridge, MD 2015

2015-05-04 Thread Lungimsam
Thanks, everybody. It was so much fun. It is a very friendly and pleasant
century, and I highly recommend it. Very pleasant riding as long as the
headwinds are few. Last year there were virtually none.

I remember I also saw a black (carbon?) Calfee tandem. So add that to the
list of interesting bikes.

Yes, that is the NIB 53 Bleriot frameset I got from PJWCycles last year. He
had a couple he was selling off along with a couple Hilsens. I guess he dug
them outta the warehouse. Someone named Peter started the thread about them
being for sale here, and I contacted PJWCycles.

I have been planning on posting pics and build details.

[RBW] WTB: 650B wheels/rims

2015-05-04 Thread M D Smith
Hello All-

I am looking to do a 650b conversion on my sweetheart's awesome Shogun mixte as
a birthday present for her.

I kind of have to do it on the frugal side. I have a line on brakes and tires.
I am looking for a budget set of 650B wheels (120 OLD, unfortunately.)

I would also interested (preferred, actually) in a pair of 32 hole rims. I
might end up exploring other hub options, so I'm open to other drillings.

Please let me know if you have anything lying around. I can do cash or trade.
I've got (used...) a 46cm Noodle bar, some Cane Creek levers, Mafac cantis, MKS
lite touring pedals, a Brooks Champion Flier ( sprung B-17) and some other
stuff.

Please contact me off list at beewak -at- gmail -dot- com

Cheers- Mike in Htfd, CT

[RBW] FS: Size 61 Canti-Romulus, built in 2006. $850

2015-05-04 Thread r . shine

I am selling the first Rivendell that I ever purchased new. It is a 61 cm
frame, built up in April of 2006. I purchased it on April 8, 2006. It has
long been one of my favorite Riv’s, but I have not ridden it too often in
the past few years, mainly because it still has drop bars. I much prefer
Alba’s these days, which all my other bikes now have. I just can’t see
this frame without the Noodles that it came with. It really is a road bike,
and most of my rides these days are commutes or fireroads.

The RBW descriptive about this frame was :

*“The Romulus is a road frame, virtually interchangeable with the
Rambouillet, and it rides dreamily. But if you're reasonably skillful and
have reasonable judgement, you'll find it a delight on fire trails as well
(with appropriate tires). The cantilver brakes open up the area under the
crown, and let's a lot of things happen there. When you pick your parts
from this list, we'll make sure they all add up to a smart, working bike.
Any questions, just ask, we're happy to answer anything. Toe clip overlap
will happen on 55cm & 57cm frames, depending on your tire, and fenders.
It's not a big deal, not worth fretting about, and most certainly is not a
design goof. But some folks can't live with it, and if you're among 'em
don't get one of these. SIZING: Refer to page 76 in the catalogue, to get
your PBH. Your frame size is PBH minus 25 to 27. If minus 25 lands you on a
61 and minus 27 says a 59.”*

I have about 3800 miles on the frame and drivetrain. I don’t baby my bikes,
so it has reasonable beausage, but no dents. Always garaged. Mechanically,
I take good cars of my bikes. However, I don’t wash and clean them often,
and barely did a cursory wipe-down to prep for this sale. Just not my thing.

The longest single ride I took on this frame was an Oregon coast ride in
2007. I also have ridden it in several local centuries.

I am asking $850 + cost of shipping. If you live within 30 minutes of my
home in San Francisco (near the Golden Gate Bridge) I will bring it to you.
PayPal is OK, otherwise a cashiers check from USPS.

Contact me off-list to discuss: r.sh...@sbcglobal.net

[RBW] Re: Brake Squeal

2015-05-04 Thread Jon in the foothills of Central Colorado
If the toe-in is set correctly you can try lightly abraiding the pads with
some sandpaper. If your rim has a build up of rubber or dirt abraid them
with a scotch bright pad or fine sand paper.Clean all surfaces with alcohol.
Hope you get rid of the annoying squeal.:) I know "clean" is not a word you

I struggle with this too. Cleaning it trailside has not worked well. Now I
just bring it home. I shake out the grounds best I can, then fold it up and
seal in the container I use to carry my coffee. Once home I clean
everything proper. This works fine for an out and back, but not for
multiple cups or overnight.

[RBW] Re: Brake Squeal

2015-05-04 Thread Surlyprof
Keven had suggested that I use a folded over piece of sandpaper to set
toe-in. Depending on the sanding grit (probably greater than 320), I would
guess that would put it at about a dime or credit card. I use Grant's
trick of hooking a section of innertube around the brake lever to hold it
in place while I tighten it down (

Glad it arrived quick for you!

The aeropress works fine if you use the base/funnel and is very sturdy. I
too prefer a pourover while on the bike. I've been using a collapsable
silicone jobbie, but want to get a helix.

I MUCH prefer the shape and insulation too. Stainless should be far tougher
than the enamel, but obviously not impervious to damage from crashing a
bike on it.

I recently ordered and am anticipating receipt of this fine looking mug
myself. I'm also an aeropress owner and regular user. I've found, that with
some mugs where the aeropress fit is a bit sketchy, as you've described,
Deacon, that I can use the funnel, which I believe is primarily meant as a
means to better funnel the coffee into the aeropress, to adapt it to a more
solid fit/feel while plunging, to get the brew out of the press, as
illustrated on this mug that doesn't really need the funnel to fit well,
but was my cup du jour:

Re: [RBW] Re: Brake Squeal

2015-05-04 Thread Patrick Moore
FWIW, the Salmons on my Rivs squeal under hard braking when temps dip much
below 50*F. At 60*F, no squeal. Single pivot calipers, but top end ones.
And this phenomenon started only a year or 2 ago -- never saw it before.
Sanding pads and cleaning rims don't stop it, tho' it mitigates it.

These same pads did squeal when new to these same rims (new pads, old rims;
Sun M14A and ME14A respectively) but it took only a month or so for them to
mate. Fronts -- both bikes have only front brakes.

My experience with Kool Stop salmon pads (which I use on most of my bikes)
is that even when the toe-in is set correctly, they squeal when they are
new. Usually for the first 10-20 miles. Then they tend to settle in and
quiet down. If the toe is set wrong, they will squeal relentlessly. Either
they will quiet down shortly on their own, or you just need to tweak the
toe-in a bit.

Re: [RBW] Brake Squeal

2015-05-04 Thread Tim Gavin
Your understanding is correct, so far. Toe-in is so-called because it
calls to mind a pigeon-toed, inward-pointed stance. As a shoeless deacon,
that image should be easy to picture. :)

Many people put a shim (like a dime, there are better solutions on the web)
behind the rear of the pad when mounting, for a predictable toe-in angle.

Any part of the brake that is loose could be causing the vibration/squeal.
-- Ensure the brake bolts are tight
-- Check for vibration in the cable or straddle wire. The tektro brake
hanger Riv sells works well
to reduce shudder from this area.

Confirming my understanding, which heaven knows I’ve gotten wrong once before.
Grin.

— Brake squeal is most likely due to insufficient toe-in?
— Toe-in should have the front of the brake pads hitting the rim first.

I just changed the Hunqapiller’s pads with the same Kool-stop salmon pads, and
now have squeal in the front pad. I’d lessened the toe-in on it because it
looked excessive.

[RBW] Re: New ACW mugs inspired by the orange...

2015-05-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
Thank you for the rapid shipping, Brad! What a fantastic wee cup. Here are
my initial impressions/observations:

-- Aeropress is too wide to sit (rest) solidly inside the mug, but the mug
is wide enough that coffee can be brewed into it using the Aeropress --
doing so requires punging with one hand on the plunger, the other on the
winder section so the Aeropress doesn't ram/wedge into the mug. I brew
using the standard, and it seems like the inverted might be awkward, at
greater risk to spill? Others will have to comment on that. Not a big issue
with me and the Aeropress is not what I take bikepacking, Helix cone is.
-- Feels very good and smooth on the lips and good in the hand.
-- very light (I love!), possibly at the expense of being too light and
susceptible to dings? Time will tell. I have no problem with dings, but
they do reduce the effect of being double walled.
-- Graphic looks great is is much more durable than the enamel mugs.

Overall, a great mug, and I believe an improvement (for me) over the enamel
ones. Thank you, Brad!

Patrick

the nice thing about the cross FD is how nicely the cage conforms to the
size of the big ring - it's made for a 46T rather than 52+
That said, I use an old Shimano 600 Arabesque double FD on a cyclotouriste
triple with 47/42/26T and it works great.

I have used several different old standard road front shifters with my
48/28 and 52/32 setups on old TA and Stronglight cranks without problems.
The shifting itself has never been an issue, but with those cranks you must
have a shifter with a flat outer cage as the space between the outer chain
ring and the crank arm is very very narrow. If you don't have that problem,
anything that fits works, from my experience.

[RBW] REVISED FS: Rivendell Road Standard, Frameset

2015-05-04 Thread David Hallerman
I've made it easier to buy this Rivendell bike. Too often, a whole bike
has parts too specific to match up with another person's desires, let
alone also the size.

So now it's simple. I'm selling just the frame and fork for *$1300, plus
shipping.*

Check or postal money order is fine.
PayPal is good if you cover the fee.

The photos below show the whole bike, but that's kind of like how it's
easier to see how a home for sale might look for the buyer when it's not
totally empty of furniture.

LMK if you have any questions about this barely used frame and fork with
only 254 miles on it since Joe Bell repainted it. Oh yes, this frame
fits me perfectly -- at 5'10" -- the same way a 56cm square frame does.
Rivendell has a lower bottom bracket than average, for instance, which
makes the standover height work, as one example.

Dave, who will be putting many of these parts on his wife's Kirk which
is in need of a partial rebuild

_/*FRAME SPECS:*/_
Seat tube (c-c) = 56.5cm
Seat tube (c-t) = 58.0cm
Top tube (c-c) = 57.5cm
Head tube angle = 73.5 degrees
Seat tube angle = 72.5 degrees
Wheelbase = 100.5cm
Standover height = 81.2cm
Head tube = 15.5cm
Chainstay length = 42.5cm
Braze-ons = pump peg, chain peg, down tube shifter bosses, rear fender
eyelets & chainstay bridge boss, fron fender eyelets, rear rack dropout
eyelets and seat stay bosses

Materials = Reynolds 753 tubing, silver-brazed, Richard Sachs-designed lugs

Wow, you had wonderful weather to go with the beautiful scenery.
Congratulations on riding the century. That is on my list to accomplish
this year. Your Bleriot looks great..

Great report, great pictures! Your Bleriot looks super sharp and well equipped
in rando attire. Didn't you pick that up from Peter White last year?

[RBW] Re: front derailleur for widelow recommendation

2015-05-04 Thread Ron Mc
As opposed to a half-step triple, where I find myself shifting the FD more
often than the RD, I really don't shift the compact double FD that often.
When you do shift to the small ring to climb, you can stay there a long
time, as the small cogs on the small ring typically take you well into 50+"
gears, which works for most off-road, and approach and plateau gears on
steep road climbs (I have a 14% grade to get to my house). .
