[RBW] Crankset Advice

2015-11-10 Thread Johnny Alien
So I am planning a winter build of a new road bike and am getting a list of
what parts I want to put on it. I am stuck a bit on what I want to do with
the crankset. I know I want to go compact double but that's about it. I
don't mind spending some cash but don't want to spend silly money either.
My ideal would have been the Sugino Alpina that VO used to sell in 48/34.
That seems to be gone and there are very few Sugino 48/34 offering and
most are lower quality. So if I give up on finding 48/34 my options open
up a but with the 50/34 group. The Alpina is available but only the Alpina
2 which I think is slightly lower quality. There is also the IRD Defiant
in that group that gets really good reviews but also has a very different
look. That crankset is actually available in a wide 46/30 range which
sounds very useful but not sure how that would work for mostly road riding
conditions.

Any advice on nice 48/34 square BB offerings? What about the 50/34? IRD,
Suginoother nice offerings. I like the WI cranks but they get too
expensive in the long run. Anyone use that wide range 46/30? Thanks!!

Re: [RBW] Crankset Advice

2015-11-10 Thread Scott Henry
I might recommend not being so focused on buying a complete crankset.
Just buy the cranks you like and then order the rings in whatever
size you prefer.I'm just building up a new bike and ended up going
with a guide/44/30 on an old SunTour triple crank I had around.

Once I gave up on trying to be fast, I have shifted all my big rings
down to either 44 or 46 teeth.I am fond of either Salsa or Surly
chainrings. Both are cheap and last a lng time.

Also take a look at just about any cyclocross offering.
Cheers,
Scott

White industries VBC is nice, but expensive. Otherwise I would just get a

Those are beautiful cranks, can be gotten in many configurations and it
super light to boot. It checks off every box but they are as pricey as the
WI cranks. I am going to give it a serious look though. Might be worth

What about the 48/34 Grand Cru that Velo Orange sells? I bought one of
these a few months ago and am well pleased with it. And, they've got a

I'd already bought one, of course). Can't beat that.

+1 to what Scott said. Get a crank without rings if you know exactly what
chainring configuration you want.
Here's a reasonably priced Sugino option:
https://www.benscycle.com/p-914-sugino-xd-fixed-gear-crankset.aspx?
While technically a single ring crankset, it can be setup as a double (I've
done this myself).

Yes, they are Velocity Dyad rims. I found mounting them very easy. I didn't
need tire levers, just rolled on with a little grunt and both thumbs.
Definitely far from the most difficult tire I've mounted.

I've had challenges mounting tires to Velocity Deep-V rims, but the tires
were 23-35mm road tires with some kind of kevlar flat protection. Pretty
much the absolute worst tire/rim combo. Massive heavy rim and dead lifeless
kevlar tire. I shudder when I think of riding that again.

110 BCD might be hard to find for triplizers, but any shop or online
merchant can get you 110 rings down to 34 teeth.
Origin8 are usually the cheapest ones. but there are many many out there.
Vuelta has rings on sale right now starting at $19. You can get them
cheaper if you look, but sometimes its easier to just spend the extra
$5 and be done with it.

[RBW] Re: Crankset Advice

2015-11-10 Thread Garth

If you want a top quality Sugino look at the current model Mighty Tour
, also called the 901D . You can get just the arms or a complete crank
with their premium chainrings, not like the cheaper ones of the XD .
Considering the premium rings in *your preferred choice*(including 48/34
silver) I'd say the $264 price is quite reasonable.

You can get the arms or the complete crank from Japan from this bike shop
that delivers to the USA .

or the arms in the US from here :

Re: [RBW] Crankset Advice

2015-11-10 Thread Patrick Moore
110 bcd rings (Sugino particularly) are available from any shop.

As for cranks: the venerable Sugino XD2 is well made, good looking, and
modestly priced. FWIW, I run 38 and 24 rings in the middle and inner
position, with a bash guard on the outside, as a "sub-compact" setup.

XD2s are often posted for sale on this list for cheap.

[RBW] Re: Let's See Some Clem/Clementine Pics

2015-11-10 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Tim. Did you try the stock saddle? Any thoughts if so?

I'm curious as to how upright this is going to be. I thought I was kinda
upright on my Le Tour mixte with albas, and a while back I commuted on a
Schwinn Suburban for a year. Ditto with a classic Raleigh three speed. But
these were all relative to a drop bar an inch or more below saddle height.
Are the Clems are in another league? I guess the Dutch style, which I have
never really ridden?

Not cheap, but I am a big fan of the TA Carmina

Not as pretty, but if you don't think you every want to go triple the TA

as well. Peter's site does not say, but he does sell without rings - or
with different rings as long as he has in stock.

[RBW] Updated Atlantis build, initial Compass tire review

2015-11-10 Thread Ty Graham
Thanks for the Atlantis update. I wanted to chime in for emphasis.
I put EL Barlow Pass on my Atlantis as soon as they were available 18 months or
so ago. I love them.
When I took my 905 mile Oregon and California trip last year I switched to the
non-EL version on the recommendation of my mechanic. I'm not sure that was
necessary, but the non-EL are still a great tire.
Net net. 905 miles of great riding and no flats. I'm a big guy, the bike was
lightly loaded since I'm a credit card tourist. Still over 300 lbs with full
water bottles.
For me this was the acid test. I'm not likely to try another tire for a long
time.

Oh, and I run Dyads.

[RBW] Re: Let's See Some Clem/Clementine Pics

2015-11-10 Thread Zed Martinez
Hey Mark,

I can't speak to the stock boscos obviously on my build, but I can say
there often seems to be some confusion about upright posture and "Dutch"
style. If you look at an omafiets, you'll see the saddle is rather low, and
the handlebars quite high and very close. They have rather short top tubes.
The closest American thing are usually whatever the cheap comfort hybrids
Trek are offering are. You ride them kind of like a box, I know guys who
like motorcyles that way. There's no lean because the handlebars are
already /right there/. It's been my experience with the Clem frame and my
other long top tube (a 3 speed Simcoe roadster) that the long top tube
actually is there to keep upright bikes from having that "Dutch" feeling.
They let you get up and get the weight off your hands while still letting
you get in just a bit of lean. I like it, a lot. It was actually remarking
that my Simcoe was the most comfortable bike I'd been on once I raised the
bars that sold me on the Clem frame when it went up. Long top tube plus
tall bars is a really nice formula for sitting "upright" without losing
some of that "active" feeling that a lot of upright bikes do have but not a
lot of people seem to assume they will.

Now, the boscos sweep back, so, I imagine the primary grip is rather
upright, but you have several good ones forwards of that, unlike a
traditional north roads, say, to alleviate that. With an albastache now on
a dirt drop stem about 2" from maxed out I'm getting a comfy upright
position with a little lean back in the wings. If I dropped them a couple
of inches my posture would be almost the same as it was on my Rivenfried
80's Fuji, except rotated so less weight was on my hands.

[RBW] Crankset Advice

2015-11-10 Thread Joe Bernard
I think 46-30 would be great for road riding. You'd be on the big ring most of
the time, with the bailout 30 available for big hills. I'm planning to do this
with my Bike Friday (smaller cassette cogs duplicate normal road gears). Right
now I have a 51-42-30 triple, and have discovered that the top gear inches on
the big ring are pointless for me. Keeping the granny and morphing the two
bigger rings into one 46-tooth sounds ideal.

Ok... so after a week or so of thinking it over, measuring myself and
measuring again. Realizing I'm really an 88 pbh. Fretting over choosing a
55 and knowing that I really want a Riv designed by Grant to ride like a
Riv. On many surfaces, many distances, many different kinds of loads and
lack of. After all those thoughts I got in touch with Grant and he
confirmed what I was thinking (and I confirmed that previously I wasn't
thinking!) that the 58 Appaloosa will be the right size for me. Dave
changed my order and I'm now getting a 58 Appaloosa! Sorry to the group for
stating my case with such conviction and then changing my mind. I hope I
didn't cause anyone to make similar sizing decisions. Good news is there
seems to be a little time to change minds!

Very cool, John! I grew up in south Fremont (rode very little as a kid).
A couple years ago while visiting my parents, I rode the canyon once with
my wife. It's such a nice road, but the traffic is a bit unnerving
(especially if large trucks are passing in the narrow spots). Or maybe I'm
just used to the empty roads of the midwest :)

I agree. I have a 46x30 setup. Veto Orange Grand Cru. Very nice I think.
But to make it ideal for me, I actually want to go down to a 44 tooth "big"
ring so that I seldom have to shift down to the 30 tooth ring. Maybe even
44x28 would be ideal. There's an interesting recent post on the Bike

Re: [RBW] Crankset Advice

2015-11-10 Thread Matthew J
I like Ben's but in this case it appears they are marketing what is in fact
a double crankset as SS / fixed likely because the look and price meet that
market.

Can't really think of any double that could not also be used in an SS /
fixed application. This does not mean they are not doubles.

On the other hand, there are many SS cranksets that are not designed to
accommodate another chain ring - although I suppose where there is a will
there is way.

[RBW] Spanninga on hammered fender? Does it sit right?

2015-11-10 Thread Lungimsam
Before I cut holes into a Honjo fender, does the Spaninga even sit right
against the hammered contours, or is it a no go?

Can you get it to sit flush or do the contours make it sit other than
optimal? Don't want to stress the fender.

[RBW] Re: Crankset Advice

2015-11-10 Thread Kieran J
I have the same 46/30 VO cranks on my road bike, and I swapped the 46t out
for a 44t TA ring. I may also switch out the 30t for a 26t or so - it would
bring regular road cassettes and short cage derailleurs back into the
picture again.

Re: [RBW] Crankset Advice

2015-11-10 Thread David Banzer
Just to be clear, the Sugino crankset I linked to really is designed for a
single chainring, but there is a slight shelf (? not sure of the term) on
the inside of the spider for an inner chainring to sit. It doesn't come as
far inboard as a regular double, but it is enough to keep the chainring in
place. I can take photos this evening if anyone would like a close up look
of this.

+1 for the 44/30 combo. I've used this on a mountain bike with home-brew 9

[RBW] Re: Crankset Advice

2015-11-10 Thread Johnny Alien
I am pretty sure that the IRD is the same as the VO cranks. I actually
have no problem with getting the cranks and chainrings seperately but it
seems like that would make my decision harder as then I need to decide on
what crank arms to get and what chainrings to pair them too, etc. My brain
is already overloaded. I suppose I could get an Alpine 2 which is a nice
crankset and just replace the large ring with a 48. The Rene Herse looks
great too (although expensive) but now you guys are making me thing that
the IRD Defiant Wide might be the way to go.

[RBW] Re: Let's See Some Clem/Clementine Pics

2015-11-10 Thread Tim Wood
Hey Mark,

With regard to the stock saddle, I only rode around a parking lot for like two
minutes on it and put my brooks on before my longer rides so I can't really
comment too much. It felt pretty good tho, it's a flat saddle and is wider then
my b17, it almost resembles the shape of a b67.

The riding position is upright but you can still achieve some lean in your
back, I think it feels tall more than upright if that makes sense. That being
said, and as Zed alluded to, the boscos allow for multiple hand positions which
allow you to get lower and more aggressive if the situation calls for it. I
found when I was climbing I grabbed near the "stem" on the flat, front area and
that got me in a pretty aggressive position. While descending or powering the
flats, I found it comfortable to rest my forearms on the high tops, on top of
the brake/shifter lever area, and grab just fore of them. In that position I
would say my back was flat and almost parallel to the top tube. But it sure was
nice after riding hard in these positions to sit up and grab the grips and not
feel stretched out or strained. It's the best of both worlds. I even did some
out of the saddle efforts and once I got the cadence and weight of the bike
figured out it was a nice climbing position. That being said, running bar end
shifters on these bars may be difficult as you'd be bumping them with you legs
and or body.

The bike is like a locomotive, once it's up to speed it just rolls along,
soaking up the bumps beautifully. I literally smile every time I'm on it. It's
raining here in Vancouver and my fenders haven't arrived yet but I think
another night ride is in the cards. Can't stop thinking about my Clem - thanks
Riv!!

There's enough contact over a broad area that the light will sit squarely
on top of the hammered edges. No issues at all, I've had one or two on
hammered fenders. Of course, I now use Velo Lumino taillights on hammered
