Re: [RBW] Locks

2016-10-21 Thread Reed Kennedy
For quick stops where I won't be far from the bike I use what I call my
"touring lock", a Palmy aluminum u-lock:
https://www.amazon.com/Palmy-Mini-Aluminium-U-lock-Black/dp/B003VLIWGE

It is light, cheap, and provides the appearance that you bike is locked
with a u-lock. (They sell them in many fun colors. I recommend the black
one I linked above, because looking like a real u-lock is half the game
here.)

To be sure, it provides relatively little actual security. I haven't tried,
but I suspect you could likely defeat it by just banging on it with a rock
a bunch and then pulling hard.

But since it does such a convincing impression of actual security folks
tend to leave it alone for at least long enough for me to run in to a shop
or have lunch.

I weigh 175. Both of my B-17 Flyers have always bounced just perfectly for me

Perfect also sitting bolt upright for me with Albatross bars! Turns your bike

The springs don't give much at all and I will say that I'm a fair amount
heavier than Patrick. It just smooths out the road/trail a tad to make all
day riding just a bit more comfortable.

One thing I will warn you about is that the flyer squeaks a lot. I'm
accustomed to it, but I imagine that it bothers a lot of people.

As for the comparison to the B17, I agree that it is very similar in my
opinion.

likely applies to the 59cm Heron Touring listed here recently, differs in
that the head angle was 72 (vs 72.5 currently) and the fork offset was 50mm
(vs 42.5 currently). The review says the seat angle is 73, but the spec was
72.

At any rate, I think that the Heron, even in Touring form, was more

The Sam geometry, other than the slope of the top tube, is extremely close
to the Heron Tour geometry.

> Can anyone speak of the tubing?
>
The Heron frames from the Gen 1 era all used Reynolds 531 OS main tubes. My
memory is they are .8/.5./8 but don't know for sure. They got stickers that
say tubes and stays, but 531 hasn't be available in stays for a long time,
so the stays are actually 525. The Tour has heavier stays than the Road.
The most distinctive thing about the Heron will be that it has round fork
blades. Let the debate begin about whether that's good or bad. I love the
way mine rides and attribute some of the "magic" to the fork. If you are
comparing it to a double TT Sam, then the Heron Touring will feel either
more lively or softer than the Sam, depending on your POV.

The Touring model used cantilever brakes and had plenty of room for tires,
but might be a little less roomy than the Sam, especially in the fork crown.

I tried a Flyer on an all-rounded mountain bike, with drop bar. I think
that the bar -- 46 cm Noodle on 10 cm D Drop stem -- was even with saddle.
The Flyer was no worse for me than the B 17, but I don't like the B 17, and
I couldn't get the springs to give -- riding the Flyer was like riding the
B 17.

Point being, that IME, if you like B 17s, the Flyer ought to be fine with
drop bar, at least as long as you are not expecting a lot of "give". I'm
not particularly light -- 175.

[RBW] B17 Flyer on drop bar Atlantis

2016-10-21 Thread René Sterental
This might seem like a dumb question, but I've only seen sprung saddles,
such as the B-17 Flyer or the B-67 on upright bikes like the Cheviot, and
in fact I really like the B67 I installed on it.

However, I'm wondering if anyone uses the B-17 Flyer on a dropbar touring
bike where the bars are level or 1" higher than the saddle.

Enlighten me!

[RBW] Locks

2016-10-21 Thread Surlyprof
Since Leah brought up the issue of security here's a question that has been
nagging at me. Is there a decent lock that's smaller and lighter than a
standard Ulock and would fit easily into a Keven's bag? For weekday
commuting the Hillborne is loaded down with heavy 36hole A719 wheels, a
Wald basket, Shopsack, med saddlesack, sturdy Ulock, computer bag, etc. On
the weekends and summers, I like to lighten things up. I switch out the
wheels for 32 hole Synergys with Barlow Pass ELs, lose the Wald and
Shopsack, swap the med saddlesack for a Keven's bag and head out for fun,
light rides without the baggage of my daily commute. However, in case I
need to stop anywhere, I still strap the heavy Ulock on the rear rack.
Does anyone have a suggestion for smaller, lightweight lock solutions for
quick stops? Riv is carrying a lock I may purchase that is about 1/2 the
weight of my Ulock but they say it is a tight fit in a Keven's bag
(http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/lk10.htm). Another alternative is this
Abus folding lock but, for the price, it doesn't seem to buy me much weight
loss from my Kryptonite Evolution
(https://www.abus.com/eng/Mobile-Security/Bike-Safety-and-Security/Locks/Folding-locks/Bordo-GRANIT-X-Plus-6500).

Any suggestions?

I have a new Carradice in black and white straps. Only mounted to the
saddle once, but not used. I had it stored, but am not going to be using
it. I don't remember the name, but it's the large one with the flap double
cover.

PM me off-list if interested.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne vs Heron Touring ... GO

2016-10-21 Thread Dave Johnston
I agree with previous posters and am a Heron Touring owner. The Sam is more
versatile (I am not a Sam owner). Tire max on the Kuzma era Heron touring
is maybe 36mm actual, so some 38 labeled tires (soma c-line for instance)
will fit and some might not. Fenders will fit any tire that fits in between
the chain stays.

One advantage is the Herons came in 2cm size increments. I also prefer
cantis to long reach sidepulls, but some hate cantis.

Uhhhme!

I think if I saw something like a riv unlocked maybe I'd try going in to
ask who owned it. I'd probably want to meet such a person because,
seriously, I can count Riv owners on one hand and still have room for the
finger for the driver that cuts you off. Ha! ha!

If it was like a shop where you go in and out to buy something, I might
hang around for a bit to see if the owner comes out.

RE: [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne vs Heron Touring ... GO

2016-10-21 Thread olofstroh
Just to add some as a former owner of a Heron Touring:
I sold it last year for financial reasons which was the right thing to do under
my present circumstances (I still have four bikes) but miss it, a very nice and
useful bike with character. It was bought at the same time Riv launched the
Atlantis and my 61 cm had identical geometry to the first generation Atlantis.
The main difference was clearance for tires, my Heron used 700Cx35 mm Paselas
with fenders, it might or might not take 38 mm tires with fenders, but not
bigger. I went on camping tours, heavily loaded with those and found it
appropriate. I also used it as a long-distance commuter and found it very good
for that, some days I used my custom Riv (a Rambouillet clone bought before the
Rams), commuting time was the same. The more narrow chain stays permitted a
more narrow Q which I saw as an advantage.

In short: a very, very versatile bike, good for loaded touring, good for
commuting, good in town. No racer but not bad at all if you wanted a brisk pace
on the road for the pleasure of it. I think it can do anything an AHH, Sam or
Atlantis can do as long as you don´t need fat tires.

Well, my husband refuses to lock his Clem up EVER. He only rides to the park

So, if it's his Rivendell you pass by unlocked, leave it so.

I used to be mega paranoid about leaving my Atlantis locked up anywhere,
anytime. Bike theft has gone up and up where I live too, but for some
reason, I'm much less worried now. I lock up the rear wheel with the
'sheldon brown method', and walk away. Sometimes I'll cover the Brooks
saddle up with the rain cover. But I leave my Carradice bags on the bike,
and the front wheel is mounted with a regular allen bolt. Maybe it's
because I live in a city where a Riv is looked at as an old clunker. Nobody
believes me that you can still buy it new. Just not a very multifaceted
cycling market here. The bottom end Giant CX bike with Sora and disc brakes
locked next to me is more likely to get pinched than my fendered, racked
heavy steel touring bike. I mean, who even WANTS those bikes anymore

Re: [RBW] Re: What would you do?

2016-10-21 Thread René Sterental
Why would seeing a Rivendell unlocked would be any different from seeing
any bike unlocked? I would think it's the owner's responsibility to decide
how to go about leaving their bike on the street and continue my way,
perhaps thinking that someone is taking stupid risks needlessly.

All the suggestions made earlier about bringing it inside and so on are
what I would prefer to do, but you can't always do it. Certainly not
routinely. I've ridden home and then driven out in the car to do an errand
I could have done when commuting by bike, only because I didn't have a lock
with me.

On a personal note, I sweat blood when I take my Cheviot downtown and leave
it locked to a rack while being in line of sight of the bike. And haven't
been able to bring myself to leave it locked and go into a store or
restaurant where I won't have line of sight on the bike. Being latin
american I'm doubly paranoid about it, even having Pitlocks in addition to
the U-Lock. I will have to learn... to trust the security devices and the
security strategies about making your bike less "attractive" to steal than
the others nearby...

You can take a risk like Leah did, and I'm sure this is the last time it
happens for her. I would have brought the bike inside and if not allowed,
would have blackmailed them that unless allowed, I wouldn't be able to stay
to do my commitment. The school would have certainly not reimbursed her if
it was stolen. Even if it was locked.

[RBW] Re: Taking Risks

2016-10-21 Thread Bob K.
I'm glad your bike was still there, Leah! My move would've been to simply
wheel the bike inside and shove it in a corner somewhere. Even if it's not
in the office, it's indoors and away from passing eyes. Bike culture or
not, that's a damn nice bike and it would be a shame if someone other than
you rode off on it. If someone got upset because I brought my bike inside
while volunteering at the school, I would've apologized and ridden away on
TBBITW, smiling and carefree.

[RBW] Re: Silver 2 shifters

2016-10-21 Thread Garth
David, I have both the original thumbies from 1983 and some later 1985
XC models, these have a fairing on the mount and the ends are rubber
coated, very nice ! I also have both the Sprint and Superbe DT ones.

Interestingly, the thumb ones have a 20mm ratchet inside, the DT ones
are about 16.5mm. I always have preferred the thumb shifter feel, not the
shape but the mechanism feels different to me, maybe because it is larger.

I was assuming the Silver 2 would use the 20mm ratchet of the original
w/metal washer on top but it appears to use the smaller DT sized ratchet,
so that explains the plastic further , it's the same as the current Silver
shifters.

I don't have my ST bar ends anymore, destroyed in a crash and bike taken
by insurance co. long ago ... I suspect they too had the larger 20mm
ratchet and ST used it for the thumbies. Just a guess, someone with a bar
end could measure theirs if they are curious.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne vs Heron Touring ... GO

2016-10-21 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
What's driving this is:

1. I live in Tel Aviv, which is a great place to live but very far from the
mostly US based market for Riv and Rivish bicycles and related goods.

2. My sister in law is coming for a visit in a few months and she agreed to
carry a bike for me in her checked luggage. The hundred or so bucks that would
cost is a drop in the bucket compared to the shipping, customs and fees I would
otherwise be hit with.

3. There have been several nice bikes offered for sales lately in my size (59
cm).

So, a somewhat rare oppotunity to buy a new Riv or Rivish bike, which is why I
have been thinking about it and following the FS posts.

But,

4. I live in a 1200 square foot apartment and don't have room for another bike.

QED

Thanks for listening.

Re: [RBW] Taking Risks

2016-10-21 Thread Patrick Moore
I forgot to mention a couple of *trucs* that work for me -- I am forgetful
and one of the many things I often forget is a lock.

1. Keep a lock attached to the racks you visit regularly. I used to keep
one at a local grocery store and another at church, until I found that
simply wheeling the bike inside (store) or shoving the bike into the
utility closet (church) was a lot easier.

2. Keep a light cable lock inside the bags or baskets you regularly carry.
I say "light cable" because you might baulk at carrying 5 lb of chain and
padlock around for miles on the off chance that you might occasionally use
them.

Chris, as far as I know 1983 was the(pics below) first year of the ST

If it clicks, it has a power ratchet. The ratcheting mechanism in the

[RBW] Re: Taking Risks

2016-10-21 Thread JohnS
Just happened to me today when I went to the credit union, yes some people
still like to deal with tellers. Anyway, about 1/2 there I realized I
didn't have a lock with me, so I leaned the QB against the flag pole like I
normally do and I threaded my helmet strap around the front wheel and down
tube. Fortunately it was still there when I came out.

Patrick,

Who is whom talking to?

Are you asking about Bill Lindsay's post about buying and holding? If so, I
think, (but am not positive), that he is responding to LBleriot's (whoever
that is) posts lamenting the end of the road for Silvers V1.

It does get a bit confusing in the Google interface when folks do not
include the post to which they're responding in their replies.

Re: [RBW] Taking Risks

2016-10-21 Thread Leah Peterson
Excellent ideas, All! I implemented exactly none of them, as I couldn’t read
this until I was done volunteering, but luck was on my side! There sat my bike,
just as I’d left her. Oh, the sweet sight of sunlight enhancing that creamy
blue frame.

Today would have been the world’s worst day to bring TBBITW inside. There was a
“wax museum” in the gym/multi-purpose room, and the entire office and all the
way down the hall was full of visiting parents, who were there to see their
kids’ displays. I really was relegated to the bike rack out front. As someone
else said, the bike culture is neglected here, and mostly no one cares about my
bike, I think. I live in one of the most car-centric and remote parts of Vegas.

Thanks for the advice and well-wishes! You are the best.

Re: [RBW] Sam Hillborne vs Heron Touring ... GO

2016-10-21 Thread Patrick Moore
Jay: I think there were several iterations of the Heron; Rivendell had it
made for a while by Waterford, and then sold the rights to I-forget-who who
in turn sold them to Todd Kuzma.

http://www.heronbicycles.com/geometry.html

http://www.adventurecycling.org/default/assets/resources/rivendell.pdf

I *think* that the second (1999) review considers the original
Rivendell/Waterford model, and the first link (2007) records the Kuzma
models. If not, perhaps others will correct me.

At any rate, I think that the Heron, even in Touring form, was more
road-bike-like in geometry (and limitations for dirt) than the Sam.

Can anyone speak of the tubing?

[RBW] Re: Silver 2 shifters

2016-10-21 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
Did Suntour have a thumbshifter in the 83-84 timeframe that doesn't have
the power ratchet or whatever it's called? I have a set of levers with
"the band" that came off an 83 MTB (that I miss) but I never made the
connection that they might have that mechanism.

They click smoothly in one direction and are a bit stiff in the other
direction. Does this indicate anything about their condition? I've been
thinking about pursuing my 26" LHT fantasy and using one of these as a
downtube shifter for the crankset, if these work as downtube shifters.

Shimano 5700 Hubs - black - fits 8/9/10 speed cassettes - original skewers
included

Single layer of Stan's tape installed - I never ran these tubeless

Photos are available, I have at least one photo right now and can take more

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne vs Heron Touring ... GO

2016-10-21 Thread Bill Lindsay
I can't think of a single thing a Heron would do that a Sam would not do.
Replacing a Sam with a Heron seems like a lateral move at best. What itch
are you scratching? Are you just bored with your Sam and want something
new? Is your Sam the wrong size? Personally I would take a Samuel
Hillborne over a Heron touring six days a week and twice on Sunday. I
would consider the Heron more "traditional" looking, and if you wanted to
be unkind about "traditional" you'd call it "dated". Now don't get me
wrong, I love traditional looking bikes and own a couple of them. Also I
think the Heron touring is definitely a nice bike. I would not mind having
a Heron touring in my stable as an N+1 in addition to a Sam, enabling me to
do two different kinds of builds on the two bikes, but I can't think of any
reasons why I would want to replace my Sam with a Heron touring.

Re: [RBW] In search of trade: Long shot, at that - 56cm Hillborne for something that fits me better

2016-10-21 Thread Patrick Moore
If you like a drop bar, and like the bar at a certain height, instead of
using bar height as a variable in bike fit, 59 is pretty long, slack seat
tube notwithstanding -- too long for me, whose perfect road fit would be
60 X 56.5 (or else a 57-58 with sloping tt).

The 58 cm Ram had a 57 tt and fit me perfectly; wonder why the Sams have
such long tts?

Anyway, one learns the hard way -- deals too good to pass up are often
deals that ought to be passed up. I learned that the hard way.

PBH of 83.x and this is right there in the groin for me. I don't mind that,

Here's a bad photo of it before I adjusted it some more which dropped the

[RBW] Taking Risks

2016-10-21 Thread LeahFoy
I got to school and realized I don't have my bike lock. I'm here only for an
hour or two to volunteer in my son's 2nd grade class. I have no choice but to
leave The Best Bike in the World unlocked in the rack in front of the school
office. TBBITW is finally set up exactly the way I've always dreamed - Big
Nitto Front Rack, Big Nitto Back Rack, baskets and bags galore, and all the
other accoutrements. It would be a crying shame to lose it now. All I can think
about is this week's post from The Bike Snob about his stolen bike - which he
left at HIS son's school!

Tom did call. It wasn't the axle that broke, it was the skewer. He's probably
heading for a bike shop now to buy a new one. Hope he has great weather for the
trip.

That means you must use a rack mount or seatpost mount.

This isn't really a Technomic stem. It's DX-Technomic stem
(http://www.benscycle.com/p-2499-nitto-ntc-dx-technomic-deluxe-long-quill-stem.aspx).

Between height of technomic (225mm), and regular stems which are usually
100mm in height.
