[RBW] Re: Road Hunq?

2016-11-15 Thread Kevin Lindsey
John -
Most of my riding is on pavement; depending on my commute, about four miles
may also be on the packed clay and gravel of the local tow path. I started
out with 50mm Schwalbs on my Hunqapillar; the ride was great, the gravel
felt like pavement, the pavement felt like silk, etc. Unfortunately, I
simply couldn't keep the rear tire inflated - there was something stuck in
there that neither I nor the LBS could find and that continued to puncture
my tubes - so in frustration I ordered a pair of Compass 38mm Barlow Pass
tires from Compass bikes. The ride is great, they make the Hunq look a
little bit less like a tank, and feel a bit faster (latter consideration is
purely subjective). They work very well on the tow path and, as I don't
intend to ride my Hunq off-road, I plan to stick with the 38s.
Hope this helps.

Nicely done. I'm pleased to read that you only lost 5mm of BB height in
the process, as I also have a blue ram. Your paint job appears to be in
pristine condition. One suggestion, when you get around to a new rack,
buy the longer stays and attach them to the drop outs rather than use a P
clamp in the middle of the blade. It will look nicer.

[RBW] Re: Road Hunq?

2016-11-15 Thread Garth

I have used Vittoria Hypers 40/38 on my Bomba , which I ride mostly on
pavement, but I don't hesitate to ride it anywhere when I feel like it
regardless of the tire. That'd be the minimum tire I'd ride with it, the
Hypers also don't have alot of volume for their width. I've not ridden
Compass tires so I can't help you there, but if I were to I'd get that new
44mm one and not a Barlow pass. From reports I have seen here it's not
really 44mm wide either, but regardless you will get notably more volume
than the Barlow without any compromise. I'm currently riding some
43mm(actual) Kenda EZ ride tires on my Bomba which is good enough for me.

Most of the miles I put on my Hunq are on pavement. I'm using Schwalbe

room for fenders.

[RBW] Re: Woolpower, DeVold, Wabi Woolens?..

2016-11-15 Thread Deacon Patrick
For me, the newest thing in wool is cotton. Grin.

The key to warmth is moisture management. Once I got ventile as my outer
layer, I now wear cotton as my inner layer (well, I still have wool for my
mid-layer, but it will be replaced with cotton over time). If dealing with
uber-cold (-20˚F), I'll use the fishnet long underwear from Wiggies.

With abandon,

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Road Standard - spreading the stays?

2016-11-15 Thread Tim Gavin
Matt-

Mine is a '97 Road Standard (exact same lugs and fork crown as yours), and
it fits 130 mm hubs without any jamming required. Mine had a 7s freewheel
when I bought it, but on a 130 mm Phil FSA hub.

Riv Catalog 3, current for my era of Road Standard, says 130 mm spacing for
the rear. I agree that yours is either custom, a rare production model in
126, or it's been re-spaced from 130 to 126.

There does seem to be some variation among these early bikes. For example,
my frame (like all Road Standards) was specified for short-reach (39-49 mm)
brakes. However, my bike can barely clear a 700 x 28 tire whereas some
Road Standards fit a 32 mm tire.

[RBW] Re: Road Hunq?

2016-11-15 Thread Shoji Takahashi
My 48cm Hunqapillar has 26" tires. Most of my miles are commuting miles
(Boston-area streets). I have Rat Trap Pass on it now-- fast tires on and
off road. I probably run them with more pressure than Compass would
recommend, but I've gotten more than a few pinch flats after hitting deep
potholes.

I've used Compass 26x1.5 before RTP came out. Those were nice and fast too.
TBH, it looked strange with all the clearance!

I've also used Big Bens. Those were very good, too-- felt fast, but not as
fast, as Compass RTP or 26x1.5. I think for the money and my use case
(commuting on streets, some in poor condition), Big Bens are as good,
perhaps better, than RTP.

Good luck!
shoji

I've not used Woolpower or DeVold, and my original issue Wabi jersey is a

I see that Wabi now has several types, but if my sample is any indication,
you can't go wrong with them.

That's a nice looking bike. Has it been repainted? I don't think I've seen the
cream outlining of the lugs before.

Re: [RBW] Want a San Marcos!

2016-11-15 Thread Patrick Moore
Welcome to the list. And good luck finding a San Marcos. You do know that
there is a statutory requirement that you post photos of any new build?

Curious: why San Marcos in particular? The Ram might be an alternative
worth considering, as certainly would be the Roadeo. (I've owned a Ram;
I've not ridden a Roadeo but am judging from others' opinions.)

[RBW] Re: Woolpower, DeVold, Wabi Woolens?..

2016-11-15 Thread Deacon Patrick
Och! I forgot to add that before my cotton conversion, I got DeVold from
Rivendell and wore them exclusively. They lasted several years, not bad for
all the biking I did in them.

I also can't speak to how well cotton/ventile moisture management would
work in a higher humidity place than Colorado. Though I've done fine on our
80%+ high humid days in the 30-40's we get in Spring and Autumn.

With abandon,

[RBW] Re: Road Hunq?

2016-11-15 Thread dstein
I run Rat Trap Pass tires on my 26" hunq, alternating between that and some
2.1" smart sams. Mostly it's pavement this day with some trails mixed in.
Albastache bars (which I've tried to replace with no less than 3 other bars
and always go back to albastache - including dirt drops, jones, and map
bars), but the Albastache's for me are the sweet spot and an important
determination along w/ the tires for what kind of riding you do on the
bike.

It's a stouter, heavier bike for sure. But I find I go just as fast as any
other rivendell or similar bike I've had. Nowhere near as fast as my go
fast gunnar road bike with a light wheelset and 33mm compass tires, but
compares pretty well to everything else I've ridden.

Re: [RBW] Re: Road Hunq?

2016-11-15 Thread Tim Gavin
I agree; I love Thunder Burts. I have a set of 26 x 2.1" Liteskins on my
'88 Schwinn KOM.

The TBs feel about as fast as my Schwalbe Super Moto tires, which are about
95% as fast as the best supple tires I've ridden (Pari-Moto, GB Cerf,
Lierre, Compass Stampede Pass).

What makes the Thunder Burts exceptional is that they're fast, but they
still have a reasonable amount of tread for occasional dirt wanderings.
Mine feel great on a local lazy singletrack. The TBs have great cushion and
enough traction; they only get squirrely if the trail is muddy.

Whereas, the Super Moto and Compass RTP tires have no tread. I washed out
the front Super Moto tire a couple times on twisty singletrack. The SM and
RTP are great for gravel and pavement, but not dirt.

[RBW] Clem vs Appaloosa ride comparison

2016-11-15 Thread Joe Bernard
My experience is with a 46 Clem which I sold, and my current 51 Appaloosa.
Honestly, I think you would have to really want to find differences in ride to
find them: They both are commuter/touring/light-trail oriented designs with
long stays, similar tubing diameters and canti/v-brake mounts.

The big difference I see is literally what I see..joining method. The Appaloosa
is fully lugged, doesn't have the swoopy seatstays required by Clem's seat lug,
and has a very cool fork crown reminiscent of old 3-speed Raleighs.

I think if you like one bike you'll like the other, but there's definitely a
lot of overlap in ride and capabilities, so make sure you're interested in
duplicating abilities. The Appaloosa will have a shorter toptube relative to
similar size Clem, so this may be a quality you're looking for.

Eric -- thanks very much for the offer. I ought to have specified further
that I'd like to get something that is friction only (or ratcheting), and
not with the index stuff bulking out the pivot. I admit it, I'm
superficial, I like shiny bits of metal.

[RBW] Re: Blue Rambouillet 650b conversion complete! Rambouilleriot!!

2016-11-15 Thread lum gim fong
*About the paint:*

If I recall correctly, the original owner said he bought it from a
Rivdealer in Virginia.

He said that at that time, the frame's original fork was removed by the
Rivdealer and given to another Rambouillet customer for a fork warranty
issue on that person's Rambouillet. The Rivdealer then ordered a new fork
for the original owner of this bike from RBW. RBW sent an unpainted fork
out to the shop. The original owner bought the bike with the original paint
frame, and unpainted replacement Rivfork.
He knew a pro custom auto painter, or something, who shot the fork and I
think he also did that nice lug lining.

So the frame paint is original. The fork and lug lining is a custom paint
job.

*About the rack:*
I bent a VO Randotang up and over the calipers pretty easily with my hands
and a table vise for my Bleriot bike. I leveled the rack out so that it
sits right on top of my Bleriot's front Honjo where it is affixed to the
rack eyelet. So it worked out great for the Bleriot. Hopefully just as easy
on the Rambouillet.

*About the long stays to dropouts connection:*
Do the long legs increase flex or sway?
Do they stiffen the fork, resulting in less fork flex/shock
absorption while riding?
Definitely looks cleaner!

[RBW] S3X: trade for fixed/fixed hub? Riding it geared to 95-71-59

2016-11-15 Thread Patrick Moore
The lash, I just can't take the lash. I'm so used to feathering the pedals
either to keep up and, so to speak, "coast" without adding torque, or to
retard speed, and I can't do that with the S3X -- the cranks just rattle
back and forth against the driver. It's hugely annoying.

So, if anyone wants to trade a 126 mm OL S3X in v good condition (I am
second owner, but first put it only to light use; me, I just added 30 miles
today to the 20 I earlier put on it) for a fixed/fixed hub, I'd like to
talk.

That said, I geared it 95-71-59 with a 12 t cog (46 X 12 X 24.75" wheel.
You have to use small spacers because the SA spacers and lockring would
interfere with chain action on the small 12 t cog) and took it up Tramway,
a nice 30 mile rt with a good 6-7 miles of climbing out of the river valley
to near the foothills; Cyclemeter gives a total el gain of 1319 feet. (As
for Strave, I somehow stupidly got it set on running, but you will be
pleased to know that I can maintain a 5:01 average pace for 30 miles
including the climb.) Per Cyclemeter, outbound speed, clock running, was
11.54 miles per hour, including a 2 minute wait at a busy intersection; and
18.78 mph on the return.

So: is having Sturmey Archer's famous "1 gear for cruising, one gear for
climbing, one gear for descending, one gear to rule them all, and in the
darkness bind them" rule really practical?

Well, I could sit a bit more while using the 59", but in fact I found
myself doing a lot of the climb standing in the 71, and used the 59 mostly
standing at the steepest mile and a half or 2 miles mid climb. There *is* more
drag in bottom; spin the wheel in the stand while the hub is in 1st, and it
slows faster than a front with a dynamo hub. And it "feels" different, too
-- even 2d, 71, feels different, but I could not swear in court of law to
feeling drag. It just feels "indirect" somehow.

At any rate, collating Pro's and Con's, I'd have to give the hub a + for
climbing; it was easier than using a direct drive fixed 70" gear all of the
way.

Downhill: Undecided. It's odd, I've not used a gear higher than about 80"
for years -- even on my derailleur bikes, which have gears in the low to
mid 80s, I generally spin out in a mid 70s gear, the highest I am likely to
use on the flats barring big tail winds, and simply coast when I run out of
r's pm. But with the 95, man, I just sat up and let the pedals roll over --
until I got to the steeper parts where I had to work to keep up with the
speed. From a general awareness of cadence, I am pretty confident I topped
out at over 120 rpm, so at least 35 mph; and that was the annoying thing:
once again, I couldn't feather the pedals; I was either behind and banging
the driver, or ahead and working to hard.

I would have to say that I'd rather feather the pedals at 25 mph in a
direct 75" gear than contend with the lash when speeds outstrip even a 95"
gear. OTOH, where the slope didn't cause the bike to outrun 100 rpm in the
95, it was sit up and enjoy the scenery.

And, also, I got what is perhaps a real glimpse of that weird 33% overdrive
that SA put into the AW, and which I've loudly pondered and analyzed for
years. When your speed is higher than you can comfortably keep up with in
your cruising gear, and the road is flat and smooth, and the wind is nil or
perhaps slightly biased toward your direction of travel; then shove it in
High and sit up and pedal slowly at 60 rpm -- it's surprisingly
comfortable, easy, and energy saving. Of course, immediately that you hit a
rise, or a wind, it's back to twiddling at a 25% reduction.

So, upshot? I'd have to say that I would much prefer a second fixed wheel
with a slightly lower cruise -- say 70" instead of 76"; and on the flip
side, a Dingle for 67" and 60". That would be a perfect setup for longer
(by my standards) rides, while the 76"/67" wheel would do for most of my
riding.

But if no one wants this S3X, I will keep it and keep it geared 95-71-59
instead of 76'57-48 as it was before.

If you are looking for left side (fd), it is friction only. It's an older
shifter set (late 80s), from the period when they were indexed or friction for

Anyhow, these are the model:

I have the Snoqualmie pass tires on my Appaloosa. Been riding them for a while

If I were buying strictly road tires for my Hunqa, I would go with the

tires mentioned above. I have been riding the Thunder Burt 2.1 lites

from the tread. For me, they are perfect as a mixed road/gravel option,
and since I generally use this bike as an all-rounder commuter/camper, I
like to have some tread.

Several years before I owned a Rivendell I discovered that long hard days

So anyway longest ride on a Riv: Somewhere around 70 miles on Heron
Touring, as part of a multi day ride.
I do love an all day ramble with lots of photo ops, ice cream stops, BSing
and checking places out. Maybe 35 miles in 6hrs is about right for a
rambleneur.

Re: [RBW] Re: What's the longest you have ridden on your Rivendell period?

2016-11-15 Thread Patrick Moore
Well, that certainly leaves me safe!

But this:

Our Paleolithic ancestors

did
lots of walking, with occasional sprints, but not extended running. They
would run long enough to escape the clutches of a tiger, but there were no
marathons happening across the African savanna.

And their source for this very personal information is what, exactly? The
Bible?

I've read in 18th century settlers' accounts how Indians would run a good
part of the day to run deer until it could run no more; in other words,
they outlasted it, just as wolves do. One such account was by a farm boy,
18th century, who was captured by and lived with a NE tribe for several
years. I also read how, much later, late 20th century, a Navajo priest, 70
years old, set off after a visit, at about 10 pm, to run to another
settlement some 20 or 30 miles away.

And of course the Zulu impis were notorious or celebrated, depending
whether you were Cetshwayo* or Gen. Chelmsford, for covering 40 miles in a
day.

And I've personally seen little, 5'6", 125 lb Sherpas carrying 100+ lb
loads (5 big kerosene tins on a heavy wooden frame) all day up mountain
tracks at 16K feet -- while whistling and smoking.

So, while I rather think these "experts" are on to something, some of their
"evidence" is, as someone cruelly put it, "Just So Stories."(Unless it
comes from Scripture.)

*Now there was a man who looked like a ruler! A cruel bastard, but an
imposing one -- far more so than the effete Chelmsford.

[RBW] Re: Clem vs Appaloosa ride comparison

2016-11-15 Thread tresbambi...@gmail.com
I had the same curiosity and so ordered both. I found them both to be
wonderful dream bikes, but in very different ways (apologies to Joe :-)

The Clem says, "Let's go play! Let's ride off the curb, onto the dirt
trail, then across town and explore on our way to pick up groceries. Then,
maybe if you're nice, we can grab a beer at Paul's on the way home!"

The Joe whispers, "First, let's do a 60 miler for a warm up. Then, we'll
go to your mother's in Mississippi by way of Cleveland. Next, we'll head to
the Big Apple by way of California. Those dirt & gravel roads, limestone
trails, potholed highways? No Problem, I gotcha covered.

I find the Clem to be fun, practical, & steady. I'm a kid on my banana
seated Sting Ray again.

The Appaloosa is exquisite. It's simply the most amazing, calm, inspiring
capable bike I've ever ridden (yes, even including my other Rivs) but I
don't feel quite as tempted to ride off the curbs and into the brush with
it as my Clem, though I'm sure it would oblige me. The bike you get for
the cost is an unbelievable deal in my opinion & I do a double take
whenever I see a used one for sale. The ONLY fault I can find with the Joe
is that a taller size isn't offered. Someday, Grant, pretty-pretty
plze??

Okay, so there you have my two cents worth. Hope you're tempted to get one!

Al

[RBW] Re: Clem vs Appaloosa ride comparison

2016-11-15 Thread El Sapo
I've ridden them both but I have a Clem, so I'm biased. They are different
rides. The Joe felt like a road bike to me. Not a bad thing, just something
that I'm not into anymore. I prefer the cushy fat tire ride and love the
650b wheels/tires on my Clem. After riding the Joe, I had them pull out a
set of the chocco bars to see if they would work on my Clem? They just
looked wrong. Love those chocco bars.

So you need a right side friction shifter? I might have one I'd trade with
you as I actually need a pair of DT clamp on friction shifters. I'll know
in the morning.

What type of rear brake pads are you using? Are they Thinlines? Looks like you
have the Paul Racer brake set? Also what kind of pads are using on the front
brake?

[RBW] Re: Clem vs Appaloosa ride comparison

2016-11-15 Thread Joe Bernard
That's an interesting perspective, Al. Regardless of the similarity in
ride/capability I experienced with both bikes, I would agree that Clem has more
of a "bash about" personality, simply by nature of its semi-welded construction
and lower price. In reality they can both do the same stuff, but I definitely
treat my Appaloosa as a more delicate object. Unnecessarily.

El Sapo: My 51 Appa has fat 650b tires and I totally agree, it's a wonderful
way to ride. The 52 Clem I rode at RBW with similar wheels was great, too.
