[RBW] Sage Sam tough-up color?

2017-02-16 Thread Jack Barnes
Just wondering if anyone has found a good nail polish tone to use for
touching up their sage hillborne. Noticed a few minor chips & scuffs that
I'd like to treat next time I get all of this PDX grime wiped off the frame.

cheers,

2017-02-16 Thread Ray Varella
Guilty!
I kicked myself for not bringing a camera along, especially when I stopped to
admire a Peregrine Falcon basking in the sun and a minute later a Turkey
Vulture came and landed nearly on top of him, needless to say, the Falcon left.

One of the reasons for building this bike is to carry a camera.

I need to sort out my rack, bag, basket combo.

2017-02-16 Thread Ray Varella
Got my Roscoe on the road and took it for a couple hour ride today.
I must admit, it rides every bit as good, probably even better than the custom
Allrounder it replaced.

It was a parts bin build.
Sugino AT triple cranks w/Phil BB
Rich Built Dyad/Aeroheat 650b wheels 8 speed 13-32
Suntour XC Pro rear
Some Suntour front, part of the body is dark green, not sure about model
Suntour power ratchet thumines. Shifting is great.
Albatross bars, Technomic Deluxe stem
Some Dia-Compe levers mated to my vintage Mafac tandem cantilevers.
Braking is great.
Brooks saddle
Thunder Burt tires, really nice size tire and ride nicely.

What a great value in a frame.
Grant and company are definitely producing more evolved designs.
Getting a step through has been in the back of mind for a while.
It will be nice to have such a bike as I age.

Anyone else get theirs built up yet?

I think you will really like yours.

I guess my research skills must be lacking as I am unable to determine what
the difference is, if any, between these two models by goggling around the
net. Can anyone enlighten me? I was also wondering about these models as
I read that a Glorius is still available from Riv but its not found on the
website as an option. Would it have to be made as a custom only? I know I
could call Rivendell directly but I thought I would bring it up here to
also see if anyone who has one of these models would like to post some
photos. I have a Cheviot already so not sure if these bikes would give me
anything more than I currently own. Thanks for any input!

Fine, whatever, just restore her to her former glory, I said. "Oh good, we'll

Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: VP Pedals on sale

2017-02-16 Thread Richard Rios
There's been a good bit said. So I'll just throw in my .02. I try to support my
LBS whenever possible. But when I do I go there with the mindset of I am paying
for service and dont really sweat the price. If the service isn't there then
why would I pay a higher price? And I dont. I do and don't like the really low
ball blow out prices. I like them because they can be nice when you find them
and it's something useful. But then they bum me out because i know that it
really kills the price of that item on the second hand market. I recently
bought a clem for full price and it is worth it! But then I saw Riv had
discounted it and I thought dang if I ever go to sell, which I don't plan on
but I never rule out, people will remember that lower price. This happens to me
occasionally enough because I am in a situation where i kinda have to buy to
try for better or worse. Unfortunately my experiences with most LBS has been on
the not that good side of things. Most of the shops in my area cater to the
racier type folks. so when I ask for "regular" type stuff they don't typically
stock they don't seem in all that much of a hurry to help. Which sours me in
general to tryin LBS.This has happened to me at shops even when they do
specialize in "normal" suff. I took a trip out to one such shop in the Los
Angeles area about a 75 min drive from where I live to buy a bike. I said yeah
I'll take it! Order it up... and they gave me some rig a ma roll about needing
to check stock first and then never got back to me until days later after
having had promised to get back much sooner. I end ended up buying the bike
direct and could clearly see the bike was I'm stock online from jump. Not sure
what that was about but I was bummed because i really wanted to find a great
new shop to support...b ut the servuce wasn't there :(. I'm not money rich but
am blessed to have a wife kid, morgage and all that good stuff. Expensive
bikes and parts are a luxury for me so I spend to support when I can and save a
few bucks when possible. I support Rivendell as much as I can because I really
have learned so much about cycling from Grant. If I hadn't found Riv I'd prolly
be all hunched over on some to small frame staring at the ground and missing
out on so much of what I enjoy about riding a bike. That is worth something to
me. With that said sometimes I am broker than others and because I am here in
Cali I get hit with tax plus shipping and the higher price from Riv which just
makes that voice kick in and say I gotta support my family also and that
cheaper price becomes to hard to pass up... There shouldnt be any judgemt
passing or guilt. I think amongst those who participate in this group we are
all mindful and all just doing the best we can working within the economy we
have. Stevies looks great by the way! I would love to have a shop like that in
my neck of the woods. Seems to show good service really does sell.

Forgot to mention: The Kelty is free standing, meaning you can set it up
without using any stakes, and the fly is still off of the netting. Only
you can't use the vestibules. The BA requires about 5-6 stakes with the
fly section to keep it off of the netting, plus you have some guy-cords
that require staking. This can be an issue on rocky ground.

I have two smaller tents that get pressed into service for bike camping.
The first is a used Kelty Gunnison 2 person that runs about 4 pounds and
sets up lightening fast. I take that if I'm going to be out more than a
few days (because of the extra room for changing clothes, etc...) or if it
looks like there might be rain so I can pull all the gear inside. Its
proved to be a very cost effective "start-up" tent. I also have a used BA
Seedhouse SL1 which is very light and compact, and just big enough. That's
good for S240's as well as backpacking.

My biggest wish for a small tent is camouflage, so I can blend in to the
landscape. I like to avoid the campgrounds and stick to forests for the
solitude as well as the costs (free). Most army surplus is pretty beat and
rather heavy, and most tactical stuff is way overpriced. The ideal would
be for BA to offer camo print flys as an option.

Take a look at a Montbell bag. They have diagonal elastic seams which
normally keeps the bag snug against the body (quicker to heat up) but will
also expand when you stretch out. I believe they are now made in Viet Nam.

Re: [RBW] Your S24O tent recommendation

2017-02-16 Thread Jeff Lesperance
Diagonal space or asym desgin of the Hennessy hammock (and others I'm sure
have this too), is the secret sauce to not getting bent up while sleeping.
I put my thermarest pad in the hammock with me, and that helps flatten the
bottom a bit more as well if I wiggle around a bit. I sleep comfortably on
my back and on my side in my Hennessy hammock, and I'm a bit of a princess
and the pea sleeper at home, where I've invested in a "sleep number" bed
that allows me to adjust firmness on a whim.

I would look to an expert—it seems the proper way to lay in a hammock is to
have your legs hang over the sides, which allows the knees to bend naturally.
Problem solved.

A wide enough hammock can allow you to lie down diagonally, so the curve is
less extreme.

But yeah, that hyperextension bugs the hell out of my knees. When lying on
my back in a hammock, I usually end up with my legs splayed instead of
straight. Or, I just sleep on my side (I'm a side sleeper).

And yet Stevie's is thriving, even if on a very small scale. Business has
improved each of the last 5 years or so, and he's expanded twice in that
period, most recently last year. Again, all on a very small scale, but
Steve is thinking of taking the family to Europe this summer.

Why? Friendly service; a friendly neighborhood approach; willingness to
work on anything (4-wheel, 2-person/2 drivetrain quad car? Mopeds? Electric
bikes? Slime the 2 kids' 16" tires? Find a bearing for your baby jogger?);
a focus on "just ride" bikes -- a commuter with 7 gears and battery lights,
fenders, rack, stand for $400? A huge lineup of all types of consignment
bikes; a willingness to order what you want and install it; very good
mechanical services and a knowledge of weird systems. And people come in
and just donate things like the 2 '70s *toute Campy* pro level road bikes.

I buy from my LBS most of the time. I tend to buy things in advance and
bundle my orders, so it is efficient for me and the shop. They typically
put in their QBP order on Mondays, so I try to email them just before that
with my order.

I keep a lot of common parts and consumables stocked in my garage, so I
rarely need anything quickly.

Another vote for Big Agnes. I have the Fly Creek UL 2 Platinum. Pricey,
absolutely. But it fits two people (pretty squished, but there is a
vestibule for your gear) or one person (with room for a bit of gear
inside), weighs LESS than many bivvy sacks, and has held up beautifully for
the last 3-4 years I've had it. I've used it in snow storms, thunderstorms,
2-week bikepacking tours in the mountains, all over. It's an amazing tent.
If it ever dies on me, I'm getting the exact same one again.

Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: VP Pedals on sale

2017-02-16 Thread Scott Henry
This is always a fun read everytime it comes up.
I never vote with my wallet. I let companies vote for my business with
their pricing.

I know what I want and I know what I'm buying, I assume that most on this
list do as well, I don't need to be sold anything.

If I head to a store (of any type) and they have something I want cheap,
I'll buy it. Otherwise, why spend more? I have worked on and off in bike
shops for 25 years. Here is a secret, most shops don't like ordering
things for customers. It's out of their routine, it's not what they
already paid for to stock and it's an extra thing to do. Most shops place
an order weekly, a few will order twice weekly. But its still a pain to
do the extra steps for a one-off. Plus, I can order damn near anything
right off of my phone and have it within 2-3 days. That's pretty darn
convenient, and I am a man of convenience.

I was killing some time waiting for a friend last weekend and I pulled into
a Field and Stream store. They had a rather nice carry pistol, a Ruger LCP
2, for $350. A few second on my phone and it turns out Cabela's which is
a few miles away has it for $300. Where do you think I spent money?
Both are my "local" store. Both employ "local" people. One Just does a
better job at cost management, inventory control and cost cutting and
regulation.

The $50 I saved went right into an eBay seller on a pair of Modolo anatomic
brake hoods that were probably $8 back in the 80s.
All the dollars always get spent. Its just a measure of who gets them.

For the record, the 001 pedals are nice but routinely go for right about
$45 online.
Cheers,
Scott

black/black they were sold out. For a company that stresses riding in
"regular" clothes, this detail is indeed inexplicable. We can get the
concept that they have a gusset without making a color contrast, which is
unflatteringly odd when spotted at the grocery store or the library or a
garden party. I'm not overly fussy about my appearance but it kind of makes
me feel like A.. Hey, there's my crotch, see? or B. I'm out in my weird
pajamas. And I'm no mob boss
.

I do have an older slate blue pair of MUSA shorts that has a dark blue
gusset that is passable.
