Well, he discounted air drag from fatter tires; but I think I find that
fatter, and taller too, tires slow me down in a strong headwind compared to
28s or 32s.

And big fat 29er knobbies definitely have more wind drag in headwinds!

I have used them on some porteur handlebars, which are kind of like

Good point. A bad habit of mine is this constant case of upgrade-itis. One
of the Clements is worn but I could have just purchased one as a

had my heart set on trying more of a smooth tread version found on the JB's

Hi Tim,

I remember that we didn’t get to ride in 2015 due to my groups timeline. Let’s

I live in Iowa and I intend to do the entire week. But, I'm recovering
from ACL replacement surgery, so I may only ride 20 miles each day and
drive the rest.

Our plan is to get one car load of riders and rotate the driving duties.

[RBW] Re: Hub Area Rack, with non-Riv bags...can I?

2017-05-02 Thread Rusty Click
Hi Neil,

I use the Ortleib Sport Packer Plus front bags without a problem. They
are very adjustable. I have also been known to hang a Stone Cold
insulated "beverage" bag on the HAR.
My only complaint isn't with the bags, but with the version of the HAR
itself. I have the "non-loop", early version, and I believe the loop has
to make the setup stiffer. Although, I haven't had any problems with a
moderate load.

I understand Ortleib will work, and saw the thread about adding their
mounting hardware to Riv bags, but not interested in that solution.

Anybody with first-hand knowledge of fitting non-Riv bags to the HAR?

Thanks,

But the wooden rims actually serve their function well -- in contrast, I
suspect (though I have no personal knowledge) to the carbide lamp!

Patrick Moore, who once really did briefly entertain the thought of buying
a pair of wooden rims when Gnashbar remaindered their stock 20+ years ago.

[RBW] Re: Compass on tour?

I recently did a mixed-surface tour on Vancouver Island on my Atlantis with
44mm Compass tires. Another guy had 42mm Barlow Pass 650B tires. We have
five compass flats in 1-2 miles. That was on a very rough and rocky
mountain descent. Otherwise we had zero flats for five days. We were riding
bikes with two panniers and a handlebar bag each. I'd say that so long as
you stay off the mountain bike trails, you should be just fine :)

Re: [Ext] [RBW] Re: FS -- Rivendell Wilbury 59cm complete bike -- UNIQUE BUILD -- $3200

2017-05-02 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Well let me add a different point of view. I think that the bike is
stunning and the components very inviting and I don't at all think that
$3200 is out of line for the bike. Take a gander into your typical local
bike shop that carries Specialized or Treks and see what their price tags
are for some of the carbon bikes. I understand not comparing apples to
apples but that is kind of my point. Just saying what you are getting for
your money is solid on Pudge's bike, IMO. Pudge, if the bike had been my
size I would have bought it several months back when I was trolling for a
mixte. (I'm on the list now for the mountain mixte). Good luck with your
sale. Someone should be very happy.

[RBW] WTT Choco for Albatross Alu

2017-05-02 Thread Stuart Lovinggood
Sorry to spam the list with errant WTT posts but I had great success with
my last one. I have a set of Choco Norm bars (heat-treated aluminum, 55cm,
25.4 clamp area) that came with my Appaloosa. I prefer the look and
slightly less sweepy sweep of the Albatross – and the Choco comes back just
a wee bit too much for me. I swapped the whole setup for Bullmoose bars but
now that the Chocos are on my MB-5, I realize I enjoy the relative hand
position more.

The bars are near new but have a small surface scratch under the grip from
some stubborn ESI grips. Not super picky about the Albatross bars
condition.

and just hold on to it for when I can't lift my legs.

I do think it's gonna be hard to sell this way. Super high end, yet unique and
enigmatic parts either means you're gonna have to find someone with a lot of

OK, folks, the time has come once again to cull some bikes. First up is my

https://flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/sets/72157631845152497

I would prefer to sell this as a complete bike, and to provide some incentive,
I've set the asking price pretty low, compared to the actual and replacement
cost of the gorgeous frame and beautiful (and unusual, in some cases unique)
components. I'm biased, of course, but I think any buyer who appreciates this
kind of bike will be thrilled with this unique example.

I bought the frame/fork new from College Park Bicycles in Maryland -- it was in
the owner's private stash. As list members know, a frame like this can now
only be obtained by ordering a custom from Rivendell, at about $3,500 for the
frameset alone. This build has about 10 miles on it -- no dings or scratches
on the frame that I can find anywhere.

I built this bike up from scratch. It is an unusual, even quirky, build -- a
single speed drive train, with hand-built wheels using Italian wooden rims. I
intentionally set out to make this bike as pretty as I could, with much
attention to every detail, but don't be deceived -- it is supremely
comfortable, and great fun to jump on and ride. Here is a full parts list.
Except as noted, all parts are NOS.

[RBW] Re: PSA: 60cm Quickbeam on eBay

2017-05-02 Thread Neil
Hey all, I'm the one selling this bike for a friend of mine. Feel free to
contact me directly if you would like to deal peer-to-peer for a better
deal. eBay takes considerable fees so the bike is priced to absorb that
~$150 hit in fees. Still, the deal is very fair considering how nicely the
bike is put together with some high end parts. It rides just perfect!

Mr. Eddie Flayer-- the bike isn't rusty but some of the bolts holding the
fenders on are. I don't think your comment is very kind.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Tires for Sam

2017-05-02 Thread jtallman
Tim,
I have 2 Sam Hillbornes, the first one being an orange 56 cm canti brake
version that I bought in the summer of 2009. I have tried several different
tires on it over the years, including a set of Jack Browns. I have also
found that I enjoy the ride of the Sam more with narrower tires. Four years
ago I built up a pair of 27 inch wheels from some spare rims I had and put
them on my Sam along with some 27 x 1 1/4 Paselas. I have rarely had 700c
tires on it since then.

https://flic.kr/p/fQisoc

I have a blue 55 cm Sam that I bought just over 2 years ago and it has only
had a 27 inch wheelset with SwiftTire SandCanyon tires from Loose Screws.
You can get them from Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/Panaracer-SwiftTire-inch-Folding-Tire/dp/B01DLN93L4

Blue Sam here: https://flic.kr/p/GpM8Nv

Not suggesting that you should abandon your wheelset, but letting you know
your not completely alone in preferring "narrower" tires on a Sam!

[RBW] Shop Sack Durability

2017-05-02 Thread Timothy Orr
Hey, Y'all

I've been using my large shop sack nearly every day for the last seven months.
I love it. However, one of the corners is forming a hole. I soft of thought it
would last forever, but it's not looking good at this rate. Anyone had
experiences with durability? Is this normal?

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: FS -- Rivendell Wilbury 59cm complete bike -- UNIQUE BUILD -- $3200

2017-05-02 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J. (Retired Partner)
OK, sound of crickets since I posted this suggests either (a) the bike is of no
interest to list members as built, or (b) the price is way too high.

As to the former -- functionally, this bike is like a nearly new, super-fancy
step through Quickbeam. It's not for mountainous areas, true, but single
speeds are FUN in appropriate areas. It's a great bike.

As to the latter problem, PLEASE feel free to make offers, including aggressive
offers or offers for less than the complete build -- I'd love to find a list
member who would give this bike the use it deserves.

OK, folks, the time has come once again to cull some bikes. First up is my
essentially new 59 cm Hunter Green Rivendell Wilbury. Here's a pic:
https://flic.kr/p/H2Zb8R There are many others, including a lot of detail
images, in this album:
https://flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/sets/72157631845152497

Frame/fork/headset

Rivendell Wilbury 59cm

Bottom bracket

Shimano

Wheelset

Front hub

Peter Weigle-modified vintage Campagnolo

Front rim

Ghisallo Wooden

36 hole

Spokes

Wheelsmith

Rear hub

White Industries ENO Eccentric

Rear rim

Ghisallo Wooden

36 hole

Rear spokes

Wheelsmith

Tires

Grand Bois Hetres

Red

Freewheel

White Industries ENO

Chain

Wipperman stainless

Crankset

Peter Weigle-modified vintage Stronglight (I think it's a 49D?)

Pedals

MKS rubber block, w/ red rubber blocks subbed in to match the Hetres

Seatpost

Nitto Lugged Post

Saddle

Brooks B-17 Special (hand-hammered copper rivets)

Stem

Nitto Lugged Stem

Handlebars

Nitto Albatross

Grips

Rivendell Cork, shellacked

Brake levers

Tektro vintage-style

Brakes

VO Grand Cru centerpulls

Straddle cable hangers

Herse-style from Compass Cycles

Front bag

Tubular custom plaid bag from Eric Hjeltness

Rear bag

Lunch-bag style plaid bag from Eric Hjeltness

Also included is a beautiful leather wrapped thermos flask from Beg Bicycles in
the UK, which fits the Nitto bottle cage perfectly, and matches the saddle.

Some pertinent measurements:

Seat tube 60cm
Virtual top tube 59cm
Saddle height as pictured 78cm
Reach (rear of saddle to rear ends of grips) 70cm

I have a PBH of around 87cm, and it fits me like a glove. Moreover, since it's
a mixte, the fit is flexible, as standover is not an issue.

I have just about $4,600 invested in this bike, which is essentially brand new.
Replacement cost would be an additional $1,700, so around $5,300. I'm asking
$3,200. I'll consider delivery anywhere in the Middle Atlantic states, so if
you're willing to meet me halfway, no need to ship within a radius of at least
400 miles of Delaware. Otherwise, actual shipping cost paid by buyer.

Hit me up if you have any questions. I'm probably going to be posting some
other bikes in the next couple of weeks, too.

Thanks for considering.

[RBW] PSA: 60cm Quickbeam on eBay

2017-05-02 Thread Richard Rios
+1 Mojo, and while I haven't quite thrown in the towel yet...after my last
selling experience here I do agree this can be an "interesting" crowd to sell
to !). I noticed surly and salsa has a trder / for sale page on facebook, I
haven't noticed one for Rivs but might be something to that idea. Anyway I've
also noticed that while under no pretense of manners and general niceness, that
there arnt people making snarkey remarks about the asking prices even if / when
they might seem a bit high. Having bought and sold way to much bike stuff (for
me anway) I don't disparage people's asking prices. I assume that like myself,
they are prolly gonna dump the money back into a different project or trying to
recoup some of their losses on previous sales of bike stuff. If a deal is sweet
GREAT! Good for the person who scores said deal. Otherwise I'm not sure what
the negativity about asking prices on this list is all about. And yes there are
cases that are funny and a bit obscene like the 50-100 Riv waterbottles on ebay
and, no this doesn't apply to the entire list, I've had lots a cool easy
transactions too, and yes to each his own as to what they consider fair
prices...but really!?

Best,
Richard

Tim,

An another option may be Soma's C-Line (700x38c) or one of their Shikoro
tires which are supple but have some flat protection. I have the c-lines
on my Cheviot and the Shikoros on my Sam. I've used both for commuting and
a short three day tour on the C canal trail (surface like the Katy trail)

Good luck on your tour.

I've used many less-than top quality road tires because my principal road
bikes have had 26" wheels, and top quality tires haven't been readily
available for the 559 and 571 sizes. So when Jan put the Elk Pass on the
market, I was thrilled. Frankly, I've not ridden "standard casing" Compass
tires, so I can't really say if, or by how much, the ELs reduce rolling
resistance (the Elk Pass comes only in the EL casing). But the improvement
over the already very decent 1.35" Kojaks was so noticeable that I spent
almost $1K in stocking up. (I had swapped 622 35 mm Kojaks on my erstwhile
Ram for original issue Challenge Parigi Roubaix -- as delicate a tire, I
may add, as any I've used -- and, while the difference was quite
noticeable, it wasn't as noticeable as between the 559 X 1.35 Ks and the
Elk Passes.

certainly feel something when I'm pushing 29", 2"+ wide tires against one
of our Spring headwinds! Even more so if the tire has fat, tall knobs (that
is to say, the resistance of the knobs to rolling on pavement is very
noticeably less than when a headwind is added).

I also think fenders, or at least Velo Orange flaps, catch wind; at least,
my 2003 Riv with Elk Passes and a 70" gear doesn't seem as easy to pedal as
my identical, as to position and tires '99 gofast, sans fenders and with a
76" gear. Jan did say that, from his wind tunnel tests, the fenders on the
bike or bikes he tested didn't add to drag.

[RBW] Re: "Modern" Components on a Riv?

2017-05-02 Thread Austin B
When I first got my Sam frameset, I used various bits and pieces I had
laying around to build it up and ride it before I knew exactly what I
wanted. This included running an Ultegra 6600 10-speed drivetrain &
brifters on it which I had laying around unused. While it wasn't a typical
Sam build, everything integrated just fine. I slowly swapped out most of
the Ultegra parts but ran the hollowtech Ultegra crankset on it for almost
a year, despite going to a 9-speed 12-36 cassette, Deore RD, and bar-end
shifters. (I also used the brifters only as brake levers for a bit).

It'll take the modern stuff just fine.

Re: [RBW] Re: Which Compass tires for a Sam Hillborne riden on pavement

2017-05-02 Thread panog
Actually 3 questions, if we add the "where to stop adding more suppleness
to an already supple tire?".

I absolutely agree with your statement regarding the esoteric nature of the
perceived handling differences between wheel sizes simply due to the fact
that the absolute judge of what feels best (beyond the kool-aid dispersed
by the experts) is one's self and one can only judge what they are aware of
or most often perceive as being best.

I dont remember if it was a published BQ article or a JH blog entry that
once said that JH found loosing "nimbleness" on 700c wheels when tire size
exceeded 32 mm and that was the predominant reason behind moving to 650Bx38
or x42 to regain it. What this means? To me, nothing more than that JH
prefers 650Bx38 over 700cx35 or wider for his riding. Same with Jan's
preference of the super supple (extralight) over the standard supple
casings.
Should the casual rider be influenced by JH's preferences? IMO, I tend to
be between Maybe and Not, because they may never realize the benefits they
believe exist.
Should the higher performance rider be influenced by JH's preferences? IMO,
if one's riding style, ability, cadence, posture etc are similar to Jan's
and they are riding on similar tarmac and for as long as Jan does then one
would expect some gains to be harvested by mimicking what Jan does.

After having drunk my fair share of kool-aid over the years I have come to
the realization that with bicycles in particular, one needs to separate
between what's merely true and what's important. To me and my cycling
exposure, the need for the extralight casings is just noise; I do use open
tubular type clinchers with supple walls and there I draw the line for a
number of reasons. When and if I need lower rolling resistance then I use
latex tubes.

Another consideration on wheel performance, when taken to the nth degree
via extralight casings etc, is the effect of aerodynamic drag on the
fendered, high spoke, box rimed, bulbous profile wheel which makes one
bring into prospective where to draw the line on dialing the rubber rolling
resistance.

Re: [RBW] Choco-moose Love?

2017-05-02 Thread René Sterental
I put them on my Cheviot to try, where I had the Ahearne bars that I love.
I think I actually like the Chocos better.

Tried the Bullmoose version first, but swapped it for the normals with a
100mm stem to continue using the shifters on the stem's quill. Mounted the
normals in the same orientation as the BM, so the center is higher. I like
them better this way. These are becoming a favorite.

Will post the BM version for sale shortly, I think.

Re: [RBW] FS: Tubus Tara + mounts; Nitto 32F mini-rack; XT 10-spd RD-M773; Surly Seatpost Clamp 30mm; Problem Solvers Direct Mount Adapter

2017-05-02 Thread Bob K.
Bump with new prices on the racks and rear derailleur. Pictures to follow
this evening.

*Nitto 32F Mini-Rack*--*$110 shipped/OBO*--I bought this with my Sam in
2009, but it's only been (off and) on my bike for the past year or so. It's
the model with the front tab. Great shape. Riv sells them for $140.

*Tubus Tara (silver!) + Tubus LM-1 fork mount adapters*--*$90 shipped/OBO*--I
bought this setup a year ago. I used it on a couple of short tours. There
is some slight wear on the rails, but overall great shape. Full disclosure:
You can get the black version direct from Germany for around $80 shipped.
The adapters would be roughly $15-20 extra. If you want silver, you can get
a new one from the UK for about $135 shipped (including adapters). It's not
a shiny silver, but it's pretty (enough), and it will match your bike well
(enough). Would prefer not to separate the rack and adapters.

*XT RD-M773 (long cage)*--*$35 shipped/OBO*--I bought this from a list
member a few weeks back for my new Troll, but I decided to go a different
direction. Slight wear from (I assume) installing/uninstalling the rear
wheel.

*Surly Stainless (black) seatpost clamp, 30mm clamp diameter*--*$17 shipped
OBO*--This came with my Troll. It's new. I replaced it with a gold one
because gold is pretty. Save a few bucks off retail ($20 shipped) and help
me fund the rack.

*Problem Solvers Direct Mount FD Adapter for 68/73 BB shell (34.9 with
shims for 31.8)*--*$30 shipped OBO*--It's new-in-packaging. Here's a link
to the PS description:

[RBW] PSA: 60cm Quickbeam on eBay

2017-05-02 Thread 'Mojo' via RBW Owners Bunch
Wow tough crowd. I paid $900 for my green Quickbeam frame with just a headset.
The components on this one are very nice. It is obvious the bike is in good
shape even if there is some beausage. This isn't a great bargain but it doesn't
seem crazy expensive. There is a reason I quit selling my Riv items here.

[RBW] Re: PSA: 60cm Quickbeam on eBay

2017-05-02 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I will add to the conversation that the seller does have excellent feedback
and, looking through their past sales, has accepted best offers more than a
few times.

I do suspect it is a consignment, taken in and presented mostly as they
received it. It is certainly a rider, not necessarily a show bike, but the
bike looks well thought out and the parts would seem to be great upgrades.
My knees ache at even the mention of a fixed/single speed bike, and I do
cringe a little at top tube dents and scrapes (though they happen far too
easily in the real world), but if it was my size and I was indeed looking,
I would consider the asking price or make an offer that made sense to me.

[RBW] PSA: 60cm Quickbeam on eBay

2017-05-02 Thread Bill
I don't understand how a seller would go through the effort to box the bike for
shipping but otherwise would not bother to replace the taillight battery. It
could just be a consignment and the lister presents the bike exactly as
received, greasy, dirty, rusty, and dead battery, hoping to make some easy
money.

[RBW] Re: looking for a recent post on brake clearance

2017-05-02 Thread ascpgh

So true. I had fender rattling and buzz against the resting position of the
Shimano "longer reach" brake arms on my Rambouillet when my original
hammered Honjos and Conti Gatorskin 28s I would tighten up the brakes,
partially activating them to get better clearance:

It became more than occasional after being banged into from the rear,
upsetting the perfect arc necessary. I fixed several things with Paul
Racers, Stampede Pass ELs and a wider/longer set of hammered Honjos. Now it
is actually the frame bridge and the fork crown that are the clearance
points despite bigger tires and fenders (sorry for the quality, I flashed
to get the frame color of the bridge under there):

Good braking, quiet fenders keeping me clean & dry, and a lovely smooth
ride. Just in time for spring rains.

[RBW] Re: Compass on tour?

2017-05-02 Thread ascpgh
I have Schwalbe Marathon Supremes on my Disc Trucker commuter and Stampede
Pass ELs on my Rambouillet. If I decided tomorrow to take the GAP/C path
to Washington DC, I'd take the Ram and its ELs.

I just love the ride of those tires, with each pedal stroke, that I'd
happily carry an extra (have one still in package in the tool box) and
repair kits on bike in case. My last flat, notably, was on the commuter's
rear wheel despite the tire selection which I made in deference to avoiding
planning time for flat repair into my commute since I'm already leaving at
6 am for 14 hours.

Riding on my time, I don't perseverate over potential flatting or tire
failure, it's part of what I'm out there doing. Different when I'm on a
schedule or other people's time. If I am responsible for being on a
schedule I will add contingency time which I balance with and with which
temper my equipment choices.

As an interesting comparison, I got rid of a car that came with run flat
tires as its contingency. I don't drive places that are proximate to tire
retailers that are open 24/7 hours and stock that brand/size replacement,
so the idea of being stranded by a tire failure was real. That is unless I
put a spare one in the trunk myself, which is what the manufacturer should
have done in the first place instead of making (the famously great
handling) car ride like a Conestoga wagon on those ridiculous RFTs. Not a
workable paradigm for me and interestingly similar to my bike tire view.

I myself have not drunk the "Compass kool-aid" and prolly never will. Everyone
has their own preferences and the ability to express it however that may be, it
is our nature to do so.

Re: [RBW] Re: Which Compass tires for a Sam Hillborne riden on pavement

2017-05-02 Thread Patrick Moore
Yes, the benefit of casing suppleness is principally lower rolling
resistance, though I find that more supple tires are also more comfortable
at a given tire pressure (and, OTOH, that they often require a higher
pressure to avoid sidewall flop than do tires with stiffer sidewalls).

We've got 2 questions going on here, optimum wheel size and casing
suppleness. I rather think that the question of how wheel size affects
handling is more "esoteric" than that of casing suppleness, which I guess
is available to anyone who rides above a jogging speed.
