Happen to listen to this because of a long drive recently.

Nice discussion. Not sure who those two guys are, but they are quite
knowledgeable.

They talked about (topics I can recall):

- Bike touring, Alps
- Someone had printed only 100 copies of apparently a very useful bike
touring book decades ago, there's a kickstarter to make a new version of it
- 'Everesting'
- 650B, wide tires, ride comfort
- Biking as a non-sport/racing hobby, etc

enjoy!

Nope, $15 + shipping, email me off list. I'm not using them and I'd rather

feel bad for me - I didn't pay anything close to retail for them.

Awesome charity. A previous job had me visit a lot of Title I schools, and

"Walmart." Broke my heart a bit. Any program that brings new experiences to

I'm team mechanic and an assistant coach for El Cerrito High School
Mountain Bike Racing. We're a decent sized team, all from the same school,

have too few riders to support a team, so they form "composite" teams that
include riders from several schools. San Francisco Composite is a
powerhouse, as is Oakland Composite. This year I've noticed a couple new
Composite teams that warm my heart. Tops on that short list is Richmond
Composite. Richmond, California is a rough town in the East Bay, with a
comparatively depressed local economy, and a lot of lower income families.
The Richmond Composite Mountain Bike Racing Team offers a great way to
expose lower income and minority teens to the outdoors and to cycling.
They also put a bunch of extra effort into including non-English speakers
and girls. Richmond Composite has a fundraiser happening this Wednesday,
March 28th at Clif Bar Headquarters in Emeryville. If you are an Easy Bay
bike person and want to be involved, here is info about the event:

https://richmondcomposite.brownpapertickets.com/

If you are not an East Bay bike person, or you are busy on Wednesday night,
but want to help out an incredible all-volunteer team, here's their
gofundme site:

https://www.gofundme.com/richmondcomp

I'm almost certainly going to be there Wednesday night, and I'll be trying
to parlay my donation into a jersey. Richmond has some SWEET low-key team
jerseys. Scroll down:

Loved it. Now I’m fixed gear only — directly because of what I learned by going

[RBW] Hillborne drivetrain redo, springtime ramble, 1x sort of, and a bald eagle

2018-03-26 Thread jandrews_nyc
I've been tinkering with my 1st gen. SH (original green/gold..then powder
coated black) that I purchased in '09 from Riv.
I'm playing around with a homespun 1x set up with stuff I have here in the
box. Today was finally a warm sunny early spring day so I wanted to test
the bike out.
I'm near the Catskills in New York and the winter has been dragging
onbut that seems to be wrapping up. Also, very excited to be riding
more off road now that I'm up here.
A couple of days ago I took apart the original triple crankset (46/36/24)
and made it a wide-low double (bash guard/40/26). I was having shifting
problems and took the bike to my new local shop operated by fellow RBW
lister Brian...who straightened my derailleur hanger. Today I removed the
front derailleur and front shifter altogether and kept the small chainring
for a manual bailout in case I needed it.
I also swapped out the Soma supple Vitesse tires for Bruce Gordon RnR
700x43's at about 35 psi.
The 12-34 8-speed IRD cassette has been great for the past 5 years with the
triple but I think I'm gonna need to upgrade...maybe to a 13-40 9-speed (is
there such a thing?)
I just got back from a quick 8 mile ride to get used to the bikeriding
on pavement, gravel, and straight up wet grass and mud.
This thing is feeling so great...I know the gearing as it is isn't low
enough and certainly not low enough if I'm going to carry any camping gear.
But not even thinking about shifting up front is a very freeing feeling.
That being said, the friction shifting wasn't totally excellent. Even
though the derailleur tab was straightened, I suspect the actual derailleur
cage may be slightly bent as well. It's also from '09 and I think it may
be nearing the end of it's life. I need to work on that a little more.
A couple questions: I don't think I'm interested in a clutch derailleur or
a wide-narrow chainring...but I do want a larger cassette If I'm to
keep a normal derailleur ,does it seem wise to add one of those links to
the hanger?
If I keep it front-derailleurless but have the granny gear on the
crank...could I get by with a medium cage rear ?

On my way home I crossed the Rondout Creek and noticed a bald eagle just
standing ankle-deep in the water along the shore taking drinks of water. I
see them often, but never down on the ground or in the water.

[RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-26 Thread Ryan Merrill
There is a slight selling point to the long chainstays that I'll point out
but it isn't at all Riv'ish but I'm gonna say it anyway.

So, I stuck Sram etap on my cross bike and found out rather quickly that
the battery for the front derailer limits the tire size in the rear, and it
makes a really nice place for mud and grime to ge all over...basically
another place where mud can slow you down or even take out the
batter/derailer and cause some damage. So, on that bike if I were to keep
the etap on it, I would be limited to a 33mm tire, barely, which is fine in
a cross race but blows for gravel riding. It's a problem of short
chainstays (and sram's electronic shifting.) The bike no longer has etap on
it.

Now, on a Riv with their nicely spaced out chainstays, running etap poses
no problems. (not that too many people are going to run etap on a riv, but
I'm just saying)

[RBW] Deacon Patrick is famous

2018-03-26 Thread Deacon Patrick
There are a few options, Bill. The first requires setting the timer on the
iPhone and chucking it in the air and catching it after. This tends to yield
poor results and extensive phone damage. Alternatively, as I’ve learned to do,
a Gorilla pod for iPhone hugs tree branches and holds the phone. Then I use a
timer and burst mode. This yields better results and costs less, presuming no
need to replace the phone each photo shoot. Grin. Pro Hint, (or at least a
be-less-of-a-moron hint): remove the tripod when you remove the phone to check
your shots, lest you have to backtrack miles and remember where you put it when
you realize you don’t have the tripod a few miles later (if you’re lucky!
Grin.).

It is a great photo. Most of us (me included) who ride solo much of the
time are resigned to taking photos of our inanimate bikes leaning up
against things. DP manages some great action shots. One can only assume the
use of a tripod and maybe time-lapse photography? A simple camera timer
might be too hard to time just so.

[RBW] Re: What underseat bags work on sprung Brooks?

2018-03-26 Thread lconley
Note that Brooks, who know a thing or two about saddles, provide saddle
loops on the saddle, above the springs. The Brooks springs on Flyers.
B66s, B-67s and B-73s are very, very, very stiff and don't really move
much. I am very overweight (obese) and if the springs are going to
compress, they will compress for me. I just attach my bags to the normal
saddle loops and never think about it again. I think you may be
overthinking - imagining a problem that really doesn't exist - seems to be
a common thing around here..

[RBW] Re: WTB Carradice Bagman

2018-03-26 Thread Brett Callahan
I have one. I've only had mine for a week or so, but am happy with it so
far. Initial impressions are that it is a well made product by a great guy
here in the Portland area (he's across the river in Washington.)

The finishing is excellent, it is easy to install, and seems sturdy. You
can flip the attachment points to get increased bag clearance if needed.
There's a small amount of adjustability to move the bag closer or further
from the seat. While I can't comment personally as to long term durability
yet, I know that Shawn Granton has one of the prototypes and I believe he's
been very happy with it. Maybe he'll chime in.

One caution: with the short rails on most brooks saddles, you need to have
the saddle most of the way back in order to mount the attachments, which
install to the rails behind the seatpost. Not an issue for most, I would
expect, but if you run your saddle all the way forward, you might have to
get creative.

[RBW] Re: Thomson Elite Seatpost -- 26.8 -- with New Sam H.: Seems... Small...?

2018-03-26 Thread Michael Doleman
Yeah, I hear you. My hunch is that it's totally fine and 10 minutes into my
first ride I'll have forgotten all about it.

Main thing is I just wanted to see if someone had some sort of definitive
information to the effect of it definitely not being advisable to use a
Thomson seatpost with a Sam, or whatever...

I had an older Sam, with a 27.2 post, and that also was a Thomson. No
issues. I can't seem to recall the "looseness" factor on that one, though.

Re: [RBW] 'Stasche Brake Lever Opinions

2018-03-26 Thread Patrick Moore
The big advantage of non-aero levers is that, when you find that you've cut
your cable and housing too short, you don't have to unwrap the bar to fix
your mistake. I'm using a (= 1, one only) nice, retro, Shimano aero lever
on my M bar, on the Hon Solo, and in attempt to make the housing more tidy,
I had shortened it before I installed an extender to hold the bar further
for'ard of the steering "mast". Now it's finicky to fold the mast and bar,
so I'll have to untape, reinstall, and re tape, and I hate taping bars.

Apart from that, no, IME, pretty extensive with the original issue M bar,
this is one bar where aero and non aero levers both work as well, and very
well -- assuming you install them per the original Grantian instructions,
with clamps just for'ard of the bar's curves.

Re: [RBW] Re: Lower price Atlantis!

2018-03-26 Thread Patrick Moore
I've only been reading this thread sporadically, but just noticed that the
new Atlantis has 47.5 chainstays in the larger sizes. I know that even some
'70s road race bikes had 44.5 stays (to center of long dropouts; 45 to
end); wasn't 47-8 pretty typical touring bike stay length back in the day?

Patrick Moore, who just had a cm or so added to the 44.5 (to center of
horizontal dropout) cm stays of his '99 gofast, thanks to Chauncey-added,
longer-than-1010 horizontal (forward facing) dropouts from England (to
accommodate a 46 X 15 cruising gear and an old-man-just-turned-63-myself 46
X 19 or 20 Tramway climb gear). (24 3/4" diameter wheels, btw.)

[RBW] What underseat bags work on sprung Brooks?

2018-03-26 Thread Joe Bernard
This is bigger than you're looking for, but a good illustration of hanging bags
under a springer saddle. Just loop the straps through the bottom of the springs
instead of saddle loops..works great with this small Saddlesack and should work
well with an extra small, also. I have a RuthWorks wedgy bag that would fit
well here, too.

[RBW] Re: Thomson Elite Seatpost -- 26.8 -- with New Sam H.: Seems... Small...?

2018-03-26 Thread Michael Doleman
Yeah, that sounds reasonable. For the money, it's annoying to have to think
that the Thomson post would be the problem. The bike came with a Dajia
post, which I'm fine with using, were it a zero-setback post. I can't right
now recall that it was like, pulling it out. I will check, with it.

Also totally agree about the bolt binding -- that could definitely be part
of the issue. I didn't disassemble it to specifically apply grease to the
interface points. I'll do that and see what happens.

The way the binder area on the Sam is reinforced, I have very little worry
about any damage, there. It's more about not wanting to have to
over-tighten anything, and not wanting to have to be thinking about it
while I ride. I've had saddles move, on me, while riding, and it's
unnerving.

Anyway, thanks for the tips. I'll check it out with the Dajia and see what
I can see.

[RBW] Thomson Elite Seatpost -- 26.8 -- with New Sam H.: Seems... Small...?

2018-03-26 Thread Bill Lindsay
I have a few thoughts. First off, when in doubt, call Riv. Second, I have
experience with many Rivendell seat lugs. They are very stout and so it does
take some force to get the seatpost clamp bolt tight. Also, it is possible for
the head of the bolt to bind in its hole, making it feel tighter than it is.
The classic indicator of that type of binding is it will kind of chirp at you
as you loosen it. Make sure there’s greas on that interface under the head of
the bolt. Finally I’ve heard anecdotal stuff about Thomson having tolerance
issues. Try any other 26.8mm post, preferably another brand. If a different
post behaves better, then you Thomson post is more likely the issue.

[RBW] Re: Thomson Elite Seatpost -- 26.8 -- with New Sam H.: Seems... Small...?

2018-03-26 Thread Michael Doleman
Well, it would be a 0.2mm difference, not a full 2mm, but point still
taken: I agree that in a perfect world I don't want to do anything as
drastic as using a wrong-sized seatpost.

I don't know that I'd trust my reading of my analog/non-dial calipers to
accurately reflect what would likely be far less than a half millimeter
difference.

I definitely don't see any eyeball-noticeable deformation of the binder, as
I tighten it up, and I can say with fairly strong assurance that there's
nothing amiss with the threading of the actual bolt. That all seems fine. I
just don't care for how much I seem to have to tighten things up to make it
work. Reason being, of course, the looser the post in the slot, the more
the constriction pressure is directed against one particular circumference
of the post, and that introduces what could be a higher-than-desired stress
riser on the post (I would assume).

I've had a similar issue with other bikes, in the past, and ultimately it
was all fine. But I am mainly wondering if anyone else has had similar
experiences. I'm more used to some very small amount of force being needed
to install the seatpost, even when the binder is completely loose. In the
case with the Thomson/Sam, there is absolutely no force at all needed. The
post would simple fall straight down if you dropped it into the tube -- and
that just doesn't *seem* quite right to me, for whatever reason.

Re: [RBW] What underseat bags work on sprung Brooks?

2018-03-26 Thread REC
I strap a smallish, inexpensive bag to the seat rails and keep my fix-it
items in there. A Carradice Zipped Roll on the saddle bag loops would work
(would also probably work strapped to the rails).

Another option is to put a roll tool bag or a water bottle filled with
tools in a water cage. I was thinking about putting my tools in a water
bottle cage located on the underside of my down tube. Out of the way and
they will stay dry.

[RBW] Re: Thomson Elite Seatpost -- 26.8 -- with New Sam H.: Seems... Small...?

2018-03-26 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Hi Michael,

If possible, I'd take a caliper measurement of both the post outer
diameter and the seatube inner diameter to be sure if either (or both) are
slightly out of spec.

Going up 2mm would not likely work in your favor if the seatube is spec'd
correctly at 26.8.

I also wonder if the binder bolt and nut could be contributing somehow and
binding or somewhat cross threading? Riv seatbinders take easy to find
metric bolts so you could try an alternate of the same size.

Out of curiosity, do you notice the ears of the seatlug binder pinching or
deforming such that they get close to touching and bridging the gap when
tightened enough to hold the post sufficiently? Wondering as I have
experienced too small posts before (not posts manufactured out of spec...
but undersized posts that had been used on frames designed for larger
diameter posts.)

One was a hand-me-down frame that came into my possession with a 26.2
installed and a heavily deformed seatbinder. This frame turned out
to require a 26.8 post after spreading the binder back apart and the 6mm
difference was significant and easily noticeable.

On the other hand, another frame called for a 30.9 post and the stock post
was too short for me. I had a much longer 27.2 post and a 27.2-30.8 shim
available and the 1mm difference of the 30.8 shim vs 30.9 seatbinder was
minimal enough to not cause any noticeable deformation but definitely
noticeable when tightening since it required much greater effort to get it
nice and snug.

I've used both and they both work, I'm not sure what "weird twist" you're
referring to. With aero levers the cable comes straight out along the bar
towards the stem so you tape over it, then it curves down from the end of the
tape to the brakes. Easy peasy.

[RBW] Thomson Elite Seatpost -- 26.8 -- with New Sam H.: Seems... Small...?

2018-03-26 Thread Michael Doleman
Just wanted to get some advice, here.

I am building my new Sam Hillborne, which takes a 26.8 seatpost. For the
size of frame I use, unless I get a ridiculously short stem (like, 6cm), I
need a zero-setback seatpost. Especially if I want there to be space behind
the saddle to use my Carradice Bagman uplift. I tend to like the feel of a
zero-setback post, anyway, though.

The only really nice, zero-setback post that I know of, in a 26.8 size, is
Thomson, so that's what I got. It looks great on the bike, but -- man --
does it ever seem a bit narrow in diameter. I can tighten it down such that
it does, indeed, seem to be properly static in the slot, but I *really*
have to tighten the bolt down hard. Enough so that I'm slightly worried
about it and wanted to know if anyone else has had similar experiences with
Thomson posts. I can almost imagine that sizing-up, to a 27.0, might
actually work, but then I'd be worried about it getting hopelessly stuck.

Maybe I shouldn't worry, I guess. All things being equal, I think I'd
rather have a seatpost that's a little too tight than a little too snug.

Anyone have any words of advice and/or reassurance?

[RBW] Re: 'Stasche Brake Lever Opinions

2018-03-26 Thread Kainalu V.
My LBS gave me a set of dura-ace non-aero levers and that's what I'm loving
of late on my albastaches. The non-aero seem like they work better in that
part of my brain that figures simplicity must make for a bettering, but I
haven't noticed any difference in function.

Re: [RBW] 'Stasche Brake Lever Opinions

2018-03-26 Thread Tim Gavin
Non-aero road brake levers on moustache/albastache bars have perfect cable
routing. Aero road brake levers add a weird twist in the cable housing.

My first time seeing the Tailfeather. It looks like a well made product.
The site shows that they are sold out.
Does anyone have one, comment on it?

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone have a spare Rivendell mug they're willing to part with?

2018-03-26 Thread REC
I had seen this mug on the website, but wouldn't have spent $30 for a mug
for my self. A gift for a friend, no problem! However when I saw how nice
it was, I sprung for a gift for my self and it sounds like I might have
gotten the last one. I noticed something in the wording between the first
and last lines that I hadn't noticed before. The first line reads
"rivendell bicycle works" [sic], the last line reads "rivendell bicycles
work" [sic].

The second line is a series of bikes--bike with dog in basket (now known as
Leah's dog in basket), double top tub, mixte, etc.The graphics are
around the entire mug, so is good for lefty's as much as right handed
people (in case Riv orders another batch, some might like to know).

FYI:

I import Spanninga's "Pixeo Protector" in both chrome and black finish. So
you can have your Pixeo and whack it too.
