Nothing loaded when I clicked your link so I can't comment on the

[RBW] Re: New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-17 Thread M Talley
I just mentioned the very rim that this bike needs in a post over at the
650b group. The nature of that lament was the inability to get many rim
brake 650b rims out of the supply source I checked. I looked no farther
than QBP but even they don't sell the Alex rim that is stock on the Surly
Pack Rat (650b rim brake model) I know that could change but a quick look
shows a lot of rims for the class of bike Grant is outing as the leading
trend style of bike - so disc only. The interesting rim that is on a stock
bike and would suit the Hill bike is on the Specialize Roll. It is 30mm
wide and has machined brake tracks. I wondered where one would get one if a
wheel repair was needed. Grant may have ideas for sourcing solutions for
some of these issues outed in this thread. It's the brakes that have me
wondering.

Hi Joe,
Thanks, very generous and yes, I’m interested but unlikely to make the swap
anytime soon (family/work and simply a matter not having the time to mess with
my only complete and fully functioning bike at the moment) and this also seems
to be exactly what The OP, Jim Bronson, might be lookIng for as well per his
original post. So I’ll defer to Jim if he wants to take you up on the offer
first and has a more immediate need... and if not I’ll happily take it off your
hands and set it aside for a future friction > index swap on my Clem.

Love the look of the bullmoose’d Roadini by the way and don’t think I’ve seen

may have missed it previously if you did post pics as I just haven’t been

2018-09-17 Thread dougP
Remember when MTBs first came out in the 80s? Tons of people bought them
because of the upright riding position, decent size tires, and versatility
for commuting / touring / casual riding. No intention of off-roading.
These people were turned off by skinny tires, drop bars and the general
discomfort of road bikes. I think Rivendell's current line-up reflects a
return to those ideals of way back when, and the ethos of "just ride".

Those are nice but they cover up to a 2.5" tire. The Gus takes a 2.8 max

His more expensive bicycles might be high performance, but I would not say
the Complete SWB is high performance--lots of pedal strike on rocky trails,
bars wide for northeastern woodsy single track. But that could be solved by
the higher zoot framesets with the EBB, and taking a hacksaw to the
handlebars. Also, I'm not the world's greatest mountain biker. So there's
that.

But it's pretty clear Rivendell is not trying to market a "high
performance, progressive" mtb. Just a smart, rethunk formerly known as
mountain bicycle for riding sanely through wood and over dale. I would say
the Gus Boots and the Complete are different but similar--fantastic and fun
bikes with as wide a rubber as anyone will need for just about anything. It
would have been a tough choice between the GBW and the Jones Comp, but I
have in the back of my mind re-acquiring a Clementine, and that would be
too redundant. I like the ability to pick up the Clementine by the top
tube. But that Boots is kinda awesome. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a mixte
or a swoop tube combined with big knobbies.

I don't know that with V-brakes, a la Clemlos, it is that much cleaner,
it's just that you don't need the relay pulley; same bends, though. And
there really is no other routing that I'm aware of--most "women's" mt bike
frames from the 80s-90s came with this setup. It is the bane of
step-through (or in this case "hi-swoop") top tubes. At least with mixtes,
you can often avoid the dreaded "brake housing facing upward" routing by
splitting off around the seat tube. I guess they could do the old
chainstay mount u-brakeeveryone would love that! Clean look, but dirty
brakes.

Re: [RBW] Re: Likely FS soon: Rambouillet 60 & Legolas 59

2018-09-17 Thread Reed Kennedy
Following up on the Great Roadeo Tubing Debate:

I've been using a piece of industrial testing equipment to measure wall
thickness in bike frames. Last weekend I was fortunate enough to measure a
Roadeo, Rambouillet, A. Homer Hilsen, and Hunqapillar all in similar sizes.
(Thanks to Ben Miller!)

Results are here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XeS2nJhBPSDRbqgG1-F2VOI_vK1QZnZmysARDJWyGps/edit?usp=sharing

Short version: The Roadeo is lighter of tube than the Hilsen, with the main
difference being the top tube. However, the 61cm version I measured was not
built with 6/4/6 tubing. Interestingly, the 64cm Rambouillet was almost as
thin / light, but the Roadeo was just a touch thinner.

If anyone around the SF Bay Area has a smaller Roadeo I'd be excited to
measure it. Or, frankly, any other Riv!

Best,
Reed

[RBW] Re: Introduction from RBW fans in NZ

2018-09-17 Thread dougP
Welcome to our group, and congratulations on the Hunqs. We look forward to
pictures. Hang onto the LHTs. You might take a tour in the third world
some day & have to pitch your bike up onto a bus. If you plan a tour of
the US, this list is a great resource, with lots of members offering route
advice and some even overnight accommodations.

I might conisder limiting my rear tire to <2.5" and running a Magura HS33

Kiley, I often enjoy looking through Craigslist bicycles for my state and

[RBW] Re: Big Bar Bag for original Moustache bar

2018-09-17 Thread David B
And thinking about it more, I think just a couple leather standoff things
might work with a Carradice Camper.
These are typically used with the seatpost strap on a saddlebag, but might
work fine to lower the bag, but still keep things tight.
Like this bag here, second photo in:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BjKpAemh1bz/?taken-by=treetopgoods
I was able to get everything tight and secure as I used a very dense/stiff
leather.

[RBW] Re: Big Bar Bag for original Moustache bar

2018-09-17 Thread David B
I can't recall where or on what bike (possibly Watanabe bag on an Alps
bike?), but wooden dowels were used to move the top of a handlebar bag
forward from a drop bar, so that the tops of the bar could be used. The
dowels were shaped to the contour of the bars, then leather straps were
used to attach the bag to the bar. In this way, the dowels were merely
spacers held in place somehow, maybe attached to one part of the strap.
I'd think this method might work for you in a way that wouldn't require
something to be clamped to the m-bar.
I'll look for a photo...

[RBW] ATTN: Mass and Boston Folks: Builders Ball?

2018-09-17 Thread Wally Estrella
Any Riv folk going to the New England Builders Ball this Saturday?
Weather pending I'm hoping to pedal down from Maine w/ a Sam Hillborne
fellow, Adam.If anyone is looking to meet up w/ us along the way and
bring us on into Boston that would be cool

At minimum does the Boston end of this route seem bike friendly to get to
the location?
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28618464

We're either taking the DownEaster back to Maine or will get a shuttle back
from a friend who's driving down.

CHEERS!

Re: [RBW] Big Bar Bag for original Moustache bar

2018-09-17 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks. In fact, several of those bags look very promising -- except that I
am currently using the original Moustache bar, the bends of which prevent
top access to bags strapped directly to the bar.

What may do is buy a sufficiently strong handlebar extender (clamp to bar
and offer a short tube for carrying more stuff), install it angled down,
and attach my Camper to that.

I've heard nothing about the frame being designed around sweptback bars, nor do
we know the ETT unless somebody there measured it and told someone. I expect a
lot of these bikes to show up with flattish 31.8 mtb bars or Jones Loops.

[RBW] Re: Billie Bar vs. Jones Loop H-Bar

2018-09-17 Thread Jake P
I think the lack of a larger flair/it being a narrower bar is gunna be the
deal breaker for me.. I love a 45' bend on a handlebar; it's my personal
favorite hand position for 99% of riding. My issue is that the jones is
super stiff, and I love the feel of my boscos, so I was hoping the billie
could get me a similar comfort/compliance but with a more familiar
jones-style hand position/width. Maybe the ever-elusive Waive bar will be
the answer. We'll see...

[RBW] Feel-good Vintage Bikes

2018-09-17 Thread Kiley Demond

When I stayed in Ann Arbor for a year, I followed the Michigan CraigsList
scene (after living in the Bay Area for thirty years, CL seems positively
dead everywhere else), and I was fascinated by the number of vintage bikes
available. I never made the trip to Jackson to visit one place that had
hundreds of bikes. I would have spent many hours there and purchased things
I didn’t really need, so it was sort of a survival strategy not to go. The
Michigan/Wisconsin/Illinois area has so many amazing vintage steel-frame
bikes as many were fabricated there and the population was much higher than
in the west during those years. There are “barn finds” happening
everyday;-).

https://annarbor.craigslist.org/bid/d/many-bikes-trek-huffy-schwinn/6693452600.html

https://jxn.craigslist.org/bik/d/bikes/6680421487.html

Which makes me think about places that restore vintage bikes and (re)awaken
a love of “just riding”: one non-profit, Armory Bike Union
, and one for profit, but just
as easy to love, ReCycle Aspen Art .

[RBW] Re: New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-17 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
To me it looks like the top tube is too short if it’s designed around swept
back bars, which means you’re going to get handcuffed when riding around
switchback.

How many rims out there that are suited for plus sized tires, tubeless
compatible, and available for rim brake action? Slim pickens, no doubt.
Especially for the silver lovers. Any rim brake options in 29+?

I was hoping for more of a “high performance” all-rounder rigid mtb, like a
rethought MB-1 designed around some more progressive or modern examples of mtb
geometry.

Re: [RBW] New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-17 Thread ian m
LWB = Long WheelBase, yes. Long chainstay, not compared to Rivs. My Clem
has a full 8 cm longer chainstay and doesn't fit 29x3" tires. Jones bikes
have a slacker seat tube angle, about 4 degree slacker head tube angle, and
over 20mm more fork offset. This puts the rear wheel more under the riders
body and the front wheel farther out front. Very easy to life the front and
still very stable ride thanks to long wheelbase

I think maybe the ones I linked on ebay, which are longer than any of
these, were intended for 26-700c conversions? Whatever works, though.

[RBW] Re: New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-17 Thread lconley
It works better if you use a long cable hanger instead of a short cable
hanger. I also like to wrap the cable around the drive side of the bike -
lengthens / straightens out the curve. You can also use a seat stay bridge
mounted hanger from Tektro, that is what I did on my Medium Mountain Mixte
- looks like a similar curved seat stay bridge.

[RBW] Re: Billie Bar vs. Jones Loop H-Bar

2018-09-17 Thread Ryan M.
I stuck a Jones bar on my single speed mountain bike and totally love it.
The 45 degree bend is awesome and the bar gives quite a few different hand
positions. I really like the loop area for a small front bag too. The 710
version of the loop bar has a lot of real estate so you can ride normal
with your hands on top of the brake levers or scoot far back for a pretty
upright position.

Haven't tried the billie but it doesn't flair out as much as the Jones. On
a bike meant for off road riding, I would rather have the flair. My
Appaloosa has Chocos which basically come straight back. I like that for
greenway riding and more casual/touring stuff.

Re: [RBW] Billie Bar vs. Jones Loop H-Bar

2018-09-17 Thread Eric Daume
I have both. I like the Jones better. It gives me more useful hand
positions, whereas I find the Billie bar, like its Albatross predecessor,
too upright. The Billie bar might be flexier/more comfortable though. But
the hand position on the Jones win it for me.

[RBW] Re: New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-17 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Wow. I keep trying to post, without luck

I wanted this to be a dedicated bike packer, so my critique is my crybaby cry,
OK?

The rear brake cable routing..I saw this design on MalWart bikes in the
eighties. As a mechanic back in the day, I worked on bikes with cable routing
similar and the drag was huge if even slightly dirty. This design alone kills
the bike for me, but I assume it is a mistake or detail that will be rectified.

The curved top tube means common frame bags won’t fit for bikepacking. Lack of
triple braze-ons on the fork for anything cages is a head scratcher for a
travel bike, as they seem to be more popular than front lowriders.

I am going to keep staring at the photo for a few hours a day to see if it
grows on me.And wait to see what details will be changed before I
commit to another brand. 

and the ability to literally step through and out of the frame during a

riding it since. It's quite a plush ride, especially with tubeless Compass

I had imagined the possibility of a Riv off-roader replacing my current
Clem, as riding off road is 95% of my riding now, but this bike repeats the
same design flaw as the Clem. Jones Bikes prove that you can have a huge
wheelbase for an awesomely stable ride on a Mtn bike, but it shouldn't come

increases the difficulty in raising the front end, especially while riding

Re: [RBW] Re: New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-17 Thread masmojo
I can't say as I hate it!? It seems like a sort of evolution of the Clem to me,
but I can't say I would trade my Clementine for one. I would prefer it over my
Clementine, it solves the water bottle problem & I like the larger, threadless
steerer; I'll be interested to see how the fork handles those meaty
wheels/tires.
Regarding climbing; I see a lot of mention of it here & I thought maybe I could
demystify it for folks.
Good offroad climbing technique trumps most bike design considerations. On a
hill where you fear losing traction. Get you upper body forward as much as
possible, low over the handlebars. This prevents the "wheelies". Stay seated,
then when it gets steep, while maintaining your body position PULL on the
handlebars. This effectively uses your body position as a lever which pushes
the back tire into the ground & prevents the dreaded back tire "spin" & loss of
traction.
My Surly Ogre has an impossibly short rear triangle, but I can climb some
pretty steep stuff using this technique. No problem. My main issue is running
out of juice.

Speaking of fitting to bikes with 2.8 width tires. Can you imagine a
V-brake that would work with that wide of a seat stays and have pads that
reach the rims. It would seem they have to use cantilevers. Just wondering
- maybe it has been done.

Chris,
Congratulations on the new Hunq. Having owned an LHT and several Rivs, the
Hunq is my absolute favorite. I look forward to seeing photos when you
have them completed.
All the best,

Re: [RBW] Re: New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-17 Thread Ryan M.
After riding the Appaloosa for a little bit I’m totally sold on the current
long chain stay thing Riv has going. So far after owning other Riva, the App is
my favorite Rivendell.

This Hill bike has some details that I really appreciate for a “mountain bike.”
The threadless fork/headset and the full length brake housing are both
positives for a bike that rolls through the dirt, rock, grass, and mud, which
is the way I would ride it. I’m very curious to see a geometry chart for this
bike. It looks like it would make a fine trail riding bike.

That janky brake cable routing in the rear makes me wonder why they would
insist on canti posts instead of going with a disc brake, at least for the
rear. With the plus tires one probably cannot use v brakes as the arms won’t be
long enough, so cantis are the only choice. IMHO it is a poor choice for a bike
that rolls through the dirt, rock, grass, and mud.

Re: [RBW] Re: New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-17 Thread Joe Bernard
I guess the direction Riv has taken works for me because Grant and I both seem
to favor "go for a ride" rides as opposed to "I gotta hit 20/40/60 miles today"
rides, and we live in the same hilly and mostly dry area. It's certainly fine
to not be into a particular style of bike - maybe the look and colors don't
work for you - I just think a current Riv rider would be hard-pressed to
dislike the ride if they actually rode one.

Tangent from the current Blahg: That ebike video was weird. "We don't read
books" ? 

2018-09-17 Thread ChrisB
I love the new bike and Riv's current direction. The bikes are more
accessible to a wider audience both design-wise and cost-wise and challenge
you to think differently (maybe in way that's more in tune with others and
the terrain). I like that the Hill Bike remains straight-forward to service
and can be fitted out with economical parts / with versatility, as has
always been the Riv tradition. The colors, fork blade curves, steel and
lugs speak to the Riv heritage: the best of the old with the best of the
new! Bike Industry Haters: Eat my (Musa) shorts!!

Re: [RBW] FS: 58 Sam Hillborne, dark orange

2018-09-17 Thread tom coppedge
Hey Peter,
I dbl checked and measured 85.6cm. That’s with the stock Alex DM18 rims,
and the Kenda Qwik Tendril 38 tires pumped to 45lb.

I noticed Riv’s geo chart for the 58 Sam lists stand over at 86.3. That
must be with the max tire width of 44 or 45.

Glad to provide more details - let me know.

Thanks,
Tom

I get that ! We are not limited to or by any of these production
models. If it appeals, great ! If not , so what ! The more I see models

appreciate what I DO ride right now ... and THAT I ride at all the
effin' Joy of just riding along the we ! . which is
the whole point of any of this in the first place !

Well, I don't think that's necessarily the case--I think there are plenty
of folks who wouldn't cotton to the newer generations of Rivendells, even
after a spin or two on one. While *I *think they offer a type of ride that
almost anyone would enjoy and benefit from, the new Rivs don't fit
everyone's perception of what they should be doing on a bicycle, how it
should look, etc., etc, etc. Hey, you can lead a horse to water. And that's
fine, as long as Rivendell can figure out how to sell enough to make a
decent living for everyone involved in the enterprise. And I'm impressed
by Don's apparent faith, keeping track of Rivendell despite ZERO interest
in any of the bicycles released by the company in the last decade (the
Rodeo came out around this time in 2009.) Hope springs eternal!

I think the Hill Bike looks wonderful, and with the conditions found on
many streets these days, it would make a sensible commuter for during the
week riding. Wonder what fenders would fit over the 2.8 x 27.5?

[RBW] WTB: Completely knackered Brooks B68 (Going to try re-hanging a leather top)

2018-09-17 Thread Ben Miller
LeRoy,

I don't have a knackered B68, nor have I tried rehanging a saddle. But I have
got a custom saddle from Obsidian Monarch. He used an old Brooks frame and
rehung it with new leather and did custom leather work on it. It's great!
Definitely thicker leather than on a regular Brooks, so takes a while to break
in. But I imagine it lasts longer.

I say go for it man! Do you need a mold to shape the leather? That might be the
hardest part.

Ben
