Tully, just to be clear, I didn't mention stoutness..they're both plenty stout
to me at 190 pounds. For me the Cheviot has a lighter-feeling "road bike" ride,
which Adam may be reflecting as stiffer.

Overall both felt plush to me, especially in comparison to my current Roadini.
But like you say, tires matter..the Roadini 700c wheels are carrying
significantly narrow tires than I had on the other bikes. Shorter stays, too.

[RBW] Roadkill intense increase in your area this week?

2018-10-08 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Ps- Riv content:I rode my Roadeo on 23 mile commute today and hit a couple
chum patches along the way. Glad I didn’t get a flat. Good reason to carry
latex gloves in the banana sax for grotty tube changes. Swung by a bloated
deer carcass and ran thru the smear as I passed. I think it was dry though. I
hope I didn’t flat. Don’t want to touch the tires until I get a few miles in to
burn off any blood.

I was thinking what would makevso many animals go out into the road all the
sudden: Mating season?, New migration from construction? Rabies outbreak? I
feel bad for these animals. So much traffic. They don’t have a chance.

2018-10-08 Thread Tully Lanter
Lum, lambbo - Agreed on looks! Striking from end to end, head badge
included. Not sure it could get nicer.

Bicycle Belle (great username!) - Yes, it would be the 52cm, and I found
the thread you mentioned just yesterday. Our local buses can accommodate a
wheelbase of 46"...and Mr. Pythagoras tells me ~46.5" on the 52...so I
imagine it's close enough.

Joe, Adam - Interesting to hear pretty much opposite takes on their
stoutness! If nothing else, that speaks to the difference that the right
tires make.

Aesthetics push me toward the Cheviot, no question. V-brakes would be nice,
but I'm satisfied with long-reach Tektro sidepulls and salmon Kool-Stops on
my commuter. But the tire clearance...and *budget* clearance...of a Clem
are appealing. Perhaps wisest not to split too many hairs, but take
whichever comes up first, knowing I *really *can't go wrong here.

That's a darned good deal for one of Riv's perennial favorites. *And* it
has a single top tube, which is worth an extra $150 to $200 right there.*

But: What size is it?

I owned a 55 cm Sam Hill, canti model -- in fact, it had been a Riv shop
floor demo and if mine had taken 50 mm tires, I'd have kept it. I did have
Dave Porter add mid-fork-leg lowrider brazeons and IIRC one other doodad
before I sold it, but I certainly sold mine for more than $500.

I don't need a Sam, but they are nice bikes.

[RBW] Weighing options: Clem L vs. Cheviot (vs. ?)

Can only vouch for the Cheviot, which I think is the nicest bike ever.

I have a 60 which is way too long for buses, subways, most trains, and even

BUT

Do it!

[RBW] Weighing options: Clem L vs. Cheviot (vs. ?)

2018-10-08 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I have experience with the Clem L and the Cheviot's predecessor, the Betty Foy.
The Clem L is just as you say - silky smooth. I don't find it to be heavy or
clunky in the least, despite the beefy look of its tubes. I weigh less than 150
(though I'll never say what I do weigh, ha!) and have no trouble maneuvering
that bike around. It's actually my mother-in-law's, and I ride it during
summers at her place, and the land there is flatish. I actually love that bike
for just what it is, and that low top tube is just sublime. I never kick the
top tube and smudge the paint, that's for sure.

My Betty Foy is awesome. It is spritely, but I don't feel it's a great deal
more so than the Clem L. After 6 years of riding it nearly exclusively, it
feels like an extension of me. It takes loads really well. It's easy to
maneuver, but not more than the Clem L. I'd prefer a lower top tube that what
you get on the Riv mixtes. It's fine, but it would be even better a bit lower.
I've got marks from my boots knicking the paint on the top tube. Ugh.

As far as bus bike racks, are you getting the 52? I believe I once read on this
forum that someone with that size was able to fit it fine in the bus bike
rack...

These bikes are so different but so great that I really think you should have
BOTH. That's bad advice, isn't it...

[RBW] Weighing options: Clem L vs. Cheviot (vs. ?)

2018-10-08 Thread Joe Bernard
I've owned both - 52 L and 55 Chev - and your impressions are correct. Two
things to consider:

1. The Clem L "toptube" is noticeably lower than the Cheviot's. They're both
out of the way for planting a foot quickly on the trail, but if you're looking
to use that feature to step onto the bike - say, to avoid swinging a leg over a
big saddlebag - the Chev tube was high enough for my stubby legs to qualify as
not really being different from a diamond frame for me.

2. The v-brakes that came stock on my L were significantly stronger
(translating to easier hand pressure) than the long-reach Tektro calipers I
used on the Chev. They also limit tire size compared to the Clem. Granted,
there's other side- and center-pull brakes out there which I may have liked
better.

Conclusion: They're both nice bikes. Cheviot is more of a road bike to Clem's
mtb-ish vibe, but the one can do pretty much anything the other can do. I would
say pick your brakes, tire size, standover, price and color, and have fun!

[RBW] Re: Weighing options: Clem L vs. Cheviot (vs. ?)

2018-10-08 Thread Lum Gim Fong
For looks: Cheviut. No contest, imho.

For 150 lbs., I will say that I have personally found (at 146-178lbs at any
given time) that *all* Rivbikes are too stout for me except the Roadeo. I
cannot ride anything *at or more* than 8/5/8 tubing or bogs down on hills
for me. Maybe I am a weakling. In all other ways you can't find a better
riding bike, than a Rivendell, imho.

But if it is a toss up between Chevy and Clem, definitely a Chevy. Much,
much prettier bike. Way more elegant.

Again, if function isn't an issue.
I don't know what the functional diffs are between them.

[RBW] Re: Help with fenders

2018-10-08 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Shape the fender radius to the arc of your tires by using your fingers to
slightly push the sides together all along its length (makes fender
longer/ends move away from tire) or spreading them apart with fingers on
each side of fender and the thumb along the spine all along its length
(makes fender radius tighter, hugging the curve of the tire better and
closer on the ends.
Never grab the ends of the fender and pull or push them towards/away from
each other. You will kink the fender.

*It must be attached to the chainstay bridge. *You can buy nylon
spacers/steel spacers/cork spacers at a hardware store.
Next attach to Seatstay bridge.
Do all this with the stays attached to fender but not to frame yet.
Attach stays to frame last, under no tension.

Right now I am in single combat with a Berthoud fender over a 32mm tire on
a Rambouillet and it just...won't...fit. Front was fine, but rear...no way.
Even after trying different things with the mounting points the tire is
just...too..big. So I will install 28mm tires, which I was planning all
along.
But I like to install fenders with largest tires possible first (if I have
them) to get maximum clearance for the smaller ones I will actually use.
So 32mm fender installation for 28mm tires = massive clearance. I like alot
of clearance.

[RBW] Weighing options: Clem L vs. Cheviot (vs. ?)

2018-10-08 Thread Tully Lanter
There are too many outstanding Riv frame options for my middle-of-the-road
needs. Nice problem to face!

I've tested a Clem L and liked it. A lot. Silky smooth, 650b (in 52cm),
step-through for those unplanned traffic/trail dismounts, ample tire
clearance...

However, it felt overly stout for my 150 lbs and minimal cargo.

Theoretically, the Cheviot seems like it would have a spritelier feel à la
Sam/Homer while keeping the long chainstays and low, stretched-out top
tube. For whoever has ridden some/all of these, is that about right?

Not sure whether long-wheelbase models would fit in our buses' bike
racks...but that's another matter!

[RBW] My wife's request for a bike tour

2018-10-08 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Kip,

First ... sweet! Sounds a blast! Second, I second the idea of considering a
less trafficed path. I recall being surprised by how much traffic was there for
an official bike route (but then, I’m rather spoiled in this neck of the
woods). Perhaps a blend of routes, hitting the remote sections of the coast and
then going more inland? Unless traffic has no effect on your or your wife and
kids’ enjoyment of the days’ rides, may be worth considering.

With abandon,
Patrick

To note: Spring/Kirkendell no longer do this book. Their final (4th)

Bill Thorness has taken over the title, and put out a new edition this year:

[RBW] Re: Roadeo Future?

2018-10-08 Thread Brian Campbell
This is why I have held on to my 61cm AHH. I fall "in between" sizes and
thought of getting a 59cm Roadeo. I had the same conversation with Mark at
Riv and decide that there were more similarities than differences so it was
not a meaningful change. The e-mail exchange below:

Mark,

Hi. I spoke with Will and he suggested an e-mail to you. I ride a 61cm AHH
(really like it) but am finding I am doing more and more riding where I am
focused on riding by itself, not carrying things or commuting per se. I was
considering a Roadeo (also in 61cm or perhaps 59cm size, I can fit both per
Riv’s sizing method 87cm PB height)) and aside from rear spacing, shifter
mounts, tires size and slight front end geometry difference on the Roadeo,
is there a meaningful difference in the tubing types between the two
frames? If yes, could you let me know what they might be?

Thanks,

Brian

"Hi Brian,

In sizes 59cm and up, the tube spec is pretty similar between the Roadeo
and Hilsen. So, the main difference with probably come from lighter
components and smaller volume tires, resulting in a more spirited ride
feel. This along with slight geometry differences would differentiate the
two models.

Any other questions, let me know.

Re: [RBW] Re: Truing wheels question.

2018-10-08 Thread lconley
I trued wheels on the bike for 30 years.
If I wasn't on the road or if I was building from scratch, I took the tire
off and rubber banded a 10mm combination wrench to the brake pads for the
up and down.
A few years ago, I bought a Park truing stand, dish tool and tension meter
and did some more reading on the subject. I am never going back to on the
bike unless out on the road. I think the biggest improvement was using
better never-seize on the spokes - less spoke twist and more tension on the
spokes before the spoke nipples gave up. I am not a Rich or a Peter White,
but I can build a fairly true wheel.

Re: [RBW] Re: Truing wheels question.

2018-10-08 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
For the home mechanic doing a minor truing, the age-old technique of “plucking”
the spokes works pretty well. As the tension of a spoke increases, its sound
when plucked goes up in frequency. Plunk the spokes to find the ones that are
loose (lower tones) and avoid putting too much tension by getting the tone of
the adjusted spokes to more or less match the tones of the spokes around it.

[RBW] Re: Obenauf's on shoes?

Obenaufs oil works great on the inside of dress shoes to keep the leather
soft. I also use it on the outside of my Allen Edmonds dress shoes, let it
sink in and them polish as usual. It prevents the leather from cracking

I was at RBHQ in 2010 or 2011 and spoke with Kevin about the Rodeo. My

Re: [RBW] Re: Clem L 59 -- Considering a purchase

2018-10-08 Thread James Davis
I got a forest green Clem 59-L about a month ago (my PBH is 89). When I
decide which bike to ride to work each morning, It has been giving my
Atlantis a run for its money. Yes, I enjoy it that much. It’s a magical
bike like all rivendells tend to be.

I have had no issues with the water bottle cage getting in the way when I
stop and straddle the bike. That is likely because I typically stand over
the lowest part of the swoop, closer to the saddle. However, even when I am
leaning forward on my handle bars at stop lights, I have never become aware
of the water bottle cage.

[RBW] FS Large Saddlesack Tan with Pletcher Rack Plate

2018-10-08 Thread Vincent Tamer
https://photos.app.goo.gl/AWn8Sv1WzHXpAhMs6

I purchased this Large Tan Sack off a member of the Bunch a few months back. It
is in pretty good condition, only used around 9 times by previous owner. A few
light brown patches from dirt but not too bad.

I modified the Sack because I wanted to attach it to my Clem Rack via the quick
release Rack Plate that can be installed on various objects. I installed the
plate on the Sack and it fits well. It adds an extra bit of security when
working with large loads. The plate can be removed but I figured I could keep
them together in case someone wants to run this setup. I purchased another
large sack a while back, green just works so much better than the Tan for my
mustard Clem, so I had to go with that offer.

Take a look at the pics and see if it is a setup you want!

I’d be happy to get $200 for this. I paid $210 and the Rack Plate was $35
(imported from Swissland). Aside from modifying the bag, I only used it on one
ride in the hills. Message me for more info!

[RBW] My wife's request for a bike tour

Kip,

May I recommend this podcast on bike touring the Pacific Coast:

https://castbox.fm/vb/3096376

Also, he has other episodes that discuss different sections he has done that
were shorter. I think in 2017 he did a southern Oregon to San Francisco ride.
I'm sure if you read episode descriptions you could easily find it.

Best of luck on your tour next summer!
