Re: [RBW] No love for the Albastache?

2018-11-15 Thread 'clayton bailey' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks J, but I have had three back surgeries too, and their stem isn’t tall
enough, due to the fact I bought a smaller frame than Grant would recommend, so
I can run a suspension seat post. I have a 100 mm Nitto dirt drop, all the way
up, to get the right fit. Rather funny looking but it works. I am stiff and
can’t get low. If I have a custom frame made, which I probably should, it will
have a sloping top tube and a tall head tube, so I can run a normal stem
without six inches of spacers...and a suspension seat post (which I swear by,
everyone should have one, they save energy as well as the back) and be able to
use a short travel Hite Rite at the same time, for when I go bikepacking.
Moving my saddle height around really helps with the back pain and stability in
rough terrain.
Dream bike would be a lugged Riv Gus Boots, with light steel, and a straight,
but highly sloped top tube, with fancy paint and lugs, and geometry that works
with drops, wide tires and moderate front load.  Roadish, with a burly seat
cluster optimized for the hite rite, with a grease pin hole. It should come
with a woman I can date for free. And coffee. It should come with coffee too.

[RBW] Alternative flat bars odd feel?

2018-11-15 Thread Joe Bernard
That's what the recumbent folks call tiller effect, the light-steering feel you
get by sitting up and back away from the front wheel. Yes the sensation will
fade shortly, you're just used to bars that have all positions ahead of the
stem.

Re: [RBW] No love for the Albastache?

2018-11-15 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Vibration is now my enemy. I have two carbon bikes, both with carbon
handlebars which are very absorbent but air pressure is the thing that affects
my hands the most.
The higher the air pressure in my tires, the quicker my hand(s) go. I was
kinda amazed at the difference in speed that my hands went numb at different
pressures. Riding around with fifteen lbs. pressure is the sweet spot.
I have to run drops so I can move my hands around, or they go numb. Flat bars
don’t work for me either, as my weight goes on the outside edge of my palm. A
wide, extremely flared drop bar lets me put my weight on the thumb web, or
muscle area rather than the no-no spot.
Carbon bars help me the most, but I can’t find a 26.0 dia. in an extremely
flared drop carbon bar. Anyone know of one?
One of the reasons I’m excited over the Boots is all the carbon bars I can
chose from (the new Thompson gravel bar looks sweet). I firmly believe that the
long one inch steerers and quill stems is one of the secret to the comfort of
my Atlantis, so I think it would be a tie (with a stiff clamp on stem and
larger diameter carbon bars on the Boots), if they were to get in a fight.
The Boots fork looks comfy and not overbuilt, and with the bigger tires I’m
making a guess that it would be as comfortable as my Atlantis, just slower
around town, with 2.8s at fifteen psi to prevent vibration.

Crap. Did I just talk myself out of a Boots?  Sorry for the topic wander...

[RBW] Alternative flat bars odd feel?

2018-11-15 Thread Daniel D.
I went from mtb's with flat bars and bar ends to drop bars. Loved the multiple
hand positions and they became my bar of choice. But I've been curious about
mustache bars since discovering riv. Can never pull the trigger on cost of
replacing what works just to try something different.

Staying at a fancy hotel thanks to my gfs work. They had Linus bikes with
moustachey bars. Took one out. Realized something about this style of bar. I
also felt it when I test rode a Sam.

It's as if my left and right sides are fighting each other, seesawing back and
forth. Doesn't happen with a flat bar. Feels odd, more unbalanced. Do you
guys know what I'm talking about? With more miles I'd get used to it...

Re: [RBW] Not MUSA but Very Riv

2018-11-15 Thread Patrick Moore
Aha; that may well be the answer.

I read this:

Previously, Europeans and Asians wore gowns, robes, tunics, togas or — as
observed on the 5,300-year-old body of Ötzi the Iceman — a three-piece
combination of loincloth and individual leggings.

... and immediately thought of the Eastern US woodland Indians (and the
Scots Irish who copied them) who (so I read) wore something very similar: 2
individual, separate leg coverings and a loincloth. So 1 pantalon + 1
pantalon = 1 pr pants. Makes sense.

Theoretically, with enough money you could do it but the bike is not designed
for them. If you really want a disc bike there are a bunch of them that will

I’m of the opinion that disc brakes are superior in every way, and I freakin
hate screwing around with cantis but I will do it if I have toI would never
modify a current canti bike to take discs though.

I’m debating a bench mounted clamp and putting my PCS in the closet as backup.
But it seems like getting to the far side of the bike against a work bench,
even a narrow bench, would be a pain. Fine for a quick chain lube or der
adjustment. But installing a BB, pedals, adjusting brake pads I’m not sure.

Re: [RBW] No love for the Albastache?

2018-11-15 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
The nerve location is the same on most everyone. There are variations, but the
general location is the same. The neurologist said to not put pressure there to
avoid nerve damage, so I assume it would be the same for all cyclists or anyone
who might suffer from repetitive impacts in that area.

I just posted the photo, first up on #Dirtdancedesigns on instagram, showing
where she drew the “X’s”, so people don’t have to dig. I can’t post photos here
on my IPad yet. Haven’t figured it out.

I love the looks of the Albastache, but the brake lever rotation problem (quick
brake lever access is a big safety issue) and the nerve impingement issue
killed it for me.

Re: [RBW] Re: Work Stand Suggestions

2018-11-15 Thread Tim Gavin
That pro stand is worth its price. Lots of pounds for the buck! Congrats
on the purchase; I hope the pickup wasn't too painful.

But those pounds are what makes Pro stands (like a Park PRS) so good;
they're sturdy and stable. The folding-leg PCS designs work fine if you
prioritize that the stand be moveable. But they aren't that stable once
they're loaded with a bike.

But, if you can afford a permanent bike work station, the stability of Pro
stand is nice to have.
I believe a bench-mounted stand (like the Park PCS-12) are a better budget
choice than the PCS-10 (due to much better stability) -- but only if you
have a suitable mounting spot.

Thanks Clayton. That context makes sense. In your 'armchair expert'

Oh, and another benefit (not to everyone I know, but this is the Riv forum)
to Patrick's clothing is being able to walk into a store and look
relatively normal, albeit with a frosty beard if one is lucky enough to
grow one...

Another piece often overlooked is acclimating to the cold. It is not
dissimilar to building muscles, it takes time, and safe exposure to the
extremes. Last year I started taking partially cold showers (start hot,
soap up, and rinse off in as cold of water as the shower gets; rather
delightful if you ask me) and I found that I acclimated to the cold quicker
this year!

Sorry, Mat, but I don’t track miles so I’ve not idea. I only have one canti
(Paul Comp) brake per bike, on the front now, so the rear rim wears really
well! Grin. I got 3-4 years out of my front rim on the Hunqapillar, and that
includes a fair bit of bikepacking with loaded steep single track descents. I
still have it and it may be fine, but it is a bit concave now. It’s Atlas.
Mostly the wheels I’ve needed to replace are due to buying manufactured rather
than hand-build wheels, and spokes popped on rocks or roots and I bent the rim
beyond saving. Since then, I shifted to Rich wheels and no more such issues,
despite my riding increasing since shifting to fixed gear.

Only downside I found to upright rigging was riding in wintry blasts. Torso
more exposed which meant more suffering in winter upright riding for me.

Thanks Bill. Your suggestion in #3 is precisely what I have done.

I've removed the lockring many times and reinstalled, but never with a
torque wrench. I've always just tightened it about a 'scosh' more than snug
and have never had issues.

Cheers. John

$1,100 fully built, which is less than many frame sets only at RBW.
