[RBW] Re: Why not bigger clearances?

2019-02-01 Thread Craig Montgomery
My '96 All Rounder is just that, a road bike with mountain bike clearances.
And that's how Grant advertised them back then too. I've had a couple dozen
bikes the last 2 decades but the AR has always been with me and it always
will. I've run it with 26x1 1/4", 26x1.95's, 650Bx42/s and 47's (without
fenders), and now running 26x2.3 RTP's. It's a plum cuz it handles them all
with aplomb. You may quote me.

[RBW] Re: Why not bigger clearances?

2019-02-01 Thread Ian A
A Roadini with 60mm tires would likely need a wider Q factor to clear the rear
tire. This is just one of many geometry changes which would add up to yield a
very different bike.

A road bike with mountain bike clearances is a rare animal. The only one I can
think of that comes close is the Rawland rSogn, which was 650b, could handle
~2" tires, had a low Q and was biased toward road geo. I was so fascinated by
this idea tbat I acquired two rSogn, and had one of them modified by moving the
canti posts so it can run 26" wheels (I dreamed of a road bike with widish 26"
rubber).

I believe only 200 rSogns were ever produced.

Oddly, I ride my 700c x 35mm bike more than either Sogn (and I love those
Sogns). The 700c machine fits me like a glove. It is almost perfectly designed
as it is. I can't imagine giving up any one of these three bikes though.

[RBW] Re: Favorite grips for bar end shifters?

2019-02-01 Thread Joe Bernard
I think the problem Jones perceives with Ergons (this is a guess) applies to
all 130mm grips: they're not long enough for the Loop design. The idea behind
the long grips is you get the whole use of the bar, not just the ends. I love
Ergons but agree with him that they're limited on his bar, although wrapping
bar tape inside of them would help.

[RBW] Re: Why not bigger clearances?

2019-02-01 Thread Drw
Well there are lots of road bike, mountain bike, cross bike brands that offer
bikes with essentially one area of tire clearance yet have many models that
utilize that tire range. I don’t think tire clearance alone dictates models. I,
for one, would love a roadini spec’d bike with hunqapillar clearances, and I
don’t think that would make it a hunqapillar... you know what I mean.

I suspect handling is the real answer. I suppose my point, reduced down, is
that if everyone is trying to maximize their tire size, why not give them all a
bit more. For the purposes of a Sam or Cheviot, I don’t know why you’d want to
run a 28mm tire, but I can see someone wanting to run a tire well above 45mm
pretty easily so if you base the handling around a 45mm tire, then someone
could size up (to say 50-55m) easily or size down (to say 35mm) easily I
think. I don’t know anything about geometry.

[RBW] Re: Why not bigger clearances?

2019-02-01 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Cuz then there would only be...one model;? 2.25" tires are not needed on
every bike. It's overkill for people who only ride bike paths and nice
roads, which many do. And in the 700C size, I for one don't love the
handling. Why not make every bike fit 2.35"?

There is something beautiful about a bike with skinny old 32-35mm tires.
And if you designed everything around 2.25, that bike would suffer--bb too
low, goofy spacing, etc. Do you have one of the models that takes the
golden 2.25" tire size? If so, enjoy! It can do anything! If not, take all
that nice cash and buy one that does, or order up a custom 2.25 Cheviot,
Homer, etc. But of course then it would not be a Cheviot, Homer, etc.

[RBW] Re: Favorite grips for bar end shifters?

2019-02-01 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
Eddie,
Jones probably wrote that long before he became older or perhaps he never
suffered arthritis or carpel tunnel. Ergo grips are a god-send for us older
guys. Even a lot of MTB racers use Ergon and other ergo grips these days.

By the way, ergo bars need to have the flat part angle upward a bit to
actually put the pressure on the padded part of your hand, taking pressure
off the ulnar nerve in the center of the hand. Therefore, lock-on ergo grip
work well. Ergo grips without lock-ons will rotate. Ditto soft ergo grips
that are very bendy don't actually support your hand.

Cheers,

[RBW] Re: anybody using thermarest cot tent?

2019-02-01 Thread Ron Mc
Checking inventories, it appears the mesh cot, which is offered in XL - 30"
wide - is either being discontinued, or the batch is all but sold out, so I
ordered the cot (from Moosejaw with the one I wanted in stock).
The cot they're replacing it with uses a thermal-reflective fabric instead
of the mesh - the feet are semi-circles instead of full circles, so new cot
is overall lighter.
However, I wanted the 4" wider width - I'm 6'3", 210 lbs, and big shoulders
to go with my long limbs. Also in s. Texas, I want the cooling of the mesh
rather than the thermal-reflective.
Will keep you posted.

I've got one of the cots. Man, what a difference when sleeping outdoors. No

Good for summer sleeping, not so for cooler sleeping.

[RBW] Why not bigger clearances?

2019-02-01 Thread Drw
I mean this as a legitimate question. I would guess that there is a logical
answer that I just don’t know. So...
Why don’t all rivendells have clearances for 2.25 or larger tires? I’m aware
this would mean canti or v brakes on all the models. I’d buy a Cheviot this
second if they could go 50mm+ easily...heck I’d buy a Sam or homer as well. I’d
imagine with those clearances that someone else could do 38 or whatever smaller
size they wanted to and that’d be fine. What would be lost with bigger
clearances on all the models?

Re: [RBW] Eccentric ENO Hub and Fixed Gear Bikepacking

2019-02-01 Thread Eric Daume
I'm going to third (fourth?) what Patrick said. The ENO is a clever
solution to finding one gear choice on a bike with vertical dropouts. I
used it that way on my Gunnar Crosshairs. But when I wanted to play with
manual gear changes, I de-eccentric'd my ENO and used that wheel in a Surly
Cross Check (long, forward facing horizontals), and was much happier,
overall.

Re: [RBW] Eccentric ENO Hub and Fixed Gear Bikepacking

2019-02-01 Thread Jim M.
I'll echo previous comments. I think the ENO is designed to allow enough
slack to get a fixed gear wheel out of the dropouts. It's not meant to
allow for on the fly gear changes, like the Quickbeam. If you're maxing out
tire size, the little bit of horizontal and vertical adjustment can cause
tire rub on the chainstays, or rub on fenders or rear brake bridge. When my
ENO bike is in the workstand, I use a 19mm wrench on the cams to hold the
proper tightness. I think it helps, but that's a big wrench to pack for a
ride.

As Patrick Moore noted, you could probably use a a double/double that
equaled the same number of teeth. Still, if I had 85 lbs of bike with an
ENO, I'd probably just push rather than change gears on a snowy trailside.

[RBW] Re: Favorite grips for bar end shifters?

2019-02-01 Thread eddietheflay
I have a tried number of upright bars and now on a set of Jones Loops.
Jones recommends his own normal round rubber/silicone grips and he poo poos
things like Ergons. Gotta say for my old hands and maybe even when they
were younger, the Ergons are a godsend for comfort compared to having the
weight on your hands sliced in half by round grips over many miles. I like
the idea of a dremel groove cut into Ergons to make room for cables.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tubeless questions

2019-02-01 Thread Drw
Just an update, in case anyone does what I did. Bought 4 schwalbe x lite tubes
(sv 14), which I’d say are too small for 650b x 2.2, though riv lists them that
way. They have to stretch so much to get to the 2.2 size that I think any
puncture would open up the rubber way more than on a less stretched out tube.
Beyond that The first 2 leaked at the seams immediately. I tried patching,
which seemed to work, but new spots on the seams kept popping up. 3rd tube
appears to hold air. 4th tube remains untested because I don’t think I trust it
even if it can hold air right now.

Anyway. I know someone said it already, but I’d avoid the schwalbe extra
lights.

Thanks Darin! There are certainly similarities to the Legolas- the tubing
dimensions are very similar. I did not order the bike however - it was
purchased from Rivendell as an ‘abandoned’ frame. The person who commissioned
the frame did not complete the sale, so it ended up on the ‘garage sale’ page

Re: [RBW] Eccentric ENO Hub and Fixed Gear Bikepacking

2019-02-01 Thread jamison brosseau
My experience is similar to Patrick’s. I had an ENO hub on a Jamis sport
touring bike. I had a difficult time getting my chain tension the way I wanted
for fixed gear riding. Either too tight causing unnecessary friction or too
loose feeling shady when I would try to skid stop. I am sure a more patient
person could have gotten it to work fixed, but I couldn’t imagine trying to
change it much once I had gotten it right.
I ended up running the bike as a single speed and the ENO worked well in that
capacity. I found that when I switched from a 16t freewheel to an 19 I had to
extend my chain.

Re: [RBW] Eccentric ENO Hub and Fixed Gear Bikepacking

2019-02-01 Thread Patrick Moore
To tighten the chain, you rotate the hub around the axle and the dropout;
because the axle is in an eccentric, this makes the frame rise or drop on
the axle. While holding the wheel in place (and thus, keeping the chain
taut) you tighten the allen nuts.

IME (I used the ENO on 2 frames) 2 teeth difference is the max that the ENO
can handle; and depending on the chain and the ring and the cog, sometimes
it can't even accommodate 2 teeth. It couldn't for the early '90s Diamond
Back mtb frame I used it with

Overall, for things you can count on, I would count on the ENO to take up
slack for a single cog; but I would not count on it being able to
accommodate a second cog , at least one that is 2 teeth larger or smaller
than the first.

Also, moving the wheel/rim may put the rim out of place for rear brake
pads; I fixed this by removing the rear brake (I used fixed cogs).

Also, moving the wheel means to move it up or down relative to the ground;
this may mean, depending on clearances, that your tire rubs against the
fender or even the seatstay bridge. When I installed fenders on the 1995
Riv Road custom, I had to be careful to rotate the wheel downward, against
gravity, instead of letting it naturally rotate upward as the weight of the
frame/bike would cause it to do. If it rotated upward, it would rub against
the fender.2 co

You may be able to get away with a 2 ring/ 2 cog arrangement, if the
respective combinations add up to the same teeth. But note that tightening
the chain with an ENO is slightly more complex an operation than when
tightening it by means of an axle sliding on a long dropout. With 85 lb, I
daresay it might be cumbersome. Personally, while I think that the ENO is a
wonderful devise, I would hesitate to recommend it for anything more
complex than taking up slack for a single cog and ring.

[RBW] Eccentric ENO Hub and Fixed Gear Bikepacking

2019-02-01 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Backstory: Before I swapped the dropouts on my Hunqapillar to horizontal I, and
Grant, talked with White Ind. about using their eccentric hub for fixed gear
bikepacking. We were both told absolutely not, it will fail.

Update: Grant recently followed up with them and asked specifically what would
fail. Nothing in the hub, it turns out, they were concerned about aluminum
dropouts, despite knowing this is on a Rivendell, thus has to be steel. Sigh.

The horizontal dropout on Boots ain’t happening, so I have questions about the
ENO hub for those who have experience with one (speculation doesn’t help here,
actual experience only please):

- What is the process for tightening the chain?
- What would that process look like with a dingle cog 2x2 set-up? I presume I’d
have to drop the rear wheel out, shift the chain, put the wheel back, then
tighten the chain. Keep in mind the bike is 85 lbs total and I likely need to
lay it down to change gears.

Anything else I should think about?

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: MIT AHH reviews?

2019-02-01 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Well, I have one, a 61.5cm version (me - 89pbh, saddle height 78-79cm) but
certainly lately I have been at the mercy of the snow, ice and cold that
Sean B. mentions. I did get to ride some (not enough!) before the weather
blew in, seemingly to stay.

I like it a lot! It is incredibly comfortable and I seem to have done my
guessing and math, at least for the positioning, stem length, all of that
really well. Once I am riding, the bike seems to fit perfectly. It is
supremely comfortable, handles well and predictably, and does everything
asked. I did all of my usual "let's try this" tests... charging hills
(both sitting and spinning as well as out of saddle, giving it everything),
riding in fairly tight groups, making both quick and planned turns and
evasive maneuvers, cruising for long distances... and otherwise just normal
riding. All good, and that was from day one.

That said, the Riv sizing has evolved to a place where I seem to find
myself between sizes more than I want. I am accustomed to riding frames
larger than most would recommend, as I did as a kid all the way through
college. But with 700x38's (Compass) on the Hilsen, tire size not
necessarily max'ed, sloping top tube and all, it built into a very tall
bike (maybe 34-34.5" SO just ahead of the saddle). I need to ride it more,
and I will probably adapt, but I went for a cold weather ride before real
winter set in, in bulky and probably less than athletic clothes, and I
definitely could feel the height, mostly as I dismounted. We'll see how
that goes and I am absolutely sure summer bike clothes will help. And,
like I said, once riding, the bike feels perfect. I suppose I should
mention I am 65, so not quite as flexible as some.

I will also add that the bike I was riding the most up until the AHH is a
650b conversion (62cm Katakura Silk frame). I am running 650x38 Compass
tires as well on that bike so it has been a great comparison. And the very
preliminary verdict is... I am spoiled by 650b's. They just fit my riding
a tad better, but I ride a lot in town, or in groups, and the slight edge
in maneuvering is something you get used to. The 700's probably handle the
big miles better and may be faster (for all or some), but the difference is
there. Where the 650B's jump, the 700's spin up. I want to explore that
more as I know I just need to understand the "big" 700's a little better.

With all of that, I definitely love the bike, but I would also love to ride
a 58cm (650b) back to back with mine. The reason I went to the larger
frame was primarily because I already had a great 700c wheelset I wanted to
use. Also, Riv shows a 61.5 to be the size for an 89pbh, though that is
the lowest end of that range. But they also list figures that would make
it sound like SO on a 61.5 AHH and a 58cm Appaloosa are the same and that
does not seem to be entirely correct. I have an Appaloosa as well (700x50
Schwalbe Almotion's) and SO is a good 3/4" less.

Once the roads clear a bit I will put up pictures and a more complete
review! Sorry for all the vague words here.

Here's to an early spring?

[RBW] Re: Favorite grips for bar end shifters?

2019-02-01 Thread 'Eric Myers' via RBW Owners Bunch
Been meaning to post an update on this. I went with the Ourys, per
Jeremy's recommendation, because they come pre-grooved. They have 5
grooves, so one can be lined up at the bottom, and the other 4 are nicely
spaced, visually. Also, because they have grooves around, not just
lengthwise, you can tie the shifter cable in place *a la Rivendell*. It's
been hard to get a decently clear and focused picture on a cellphone of the
how the cable fits in, so I'm attaching 2 detail shots and hoping they are
clear enough. From a review perspective, I'm really happy with these
grips, they are all the padding I wanted and have a nice feel: grippy but
not sticky.

Foodadas are good 👍, thanks Mike

This rack arrives today, so I haven't seen it up close yet. It its photo,

[RBW] Re: How big a cog spread can you accommodate on a Quickbeam?

2019-02-01 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, all. I realize that asking for 10 teeth was asking for the moon;
even 8 is a huge spread. The 5 t spread on the 2003 Road (17-19-22;
Chauncey-added longer-than-1010 dropouts) leaves the axle with the chain on
the 22 t just about dangling over the edge, but per Sheldon metrics more
than good enough.

Upshot, for me, is that I'll not try to make 1 frame do it all. Which means
that things tend or trend toward a new frame ... one of these days.

[RBW] MIT AHH reviews?

2019-02-01 Thread Matt Beecher
Since I have not found a Quickbeam, I have been considering a 58 AHH, but I
have not noticed any reviews. Has anyone here gotten one? What did you
think of it?

I'm going to the Chicago Winter Swap in a few weeks and if I don't find a
QB by then, I might pull the trigger on a AHH. I've got a MIT-Atlantis and
wonder how much they overlap.

Cheers,
Matt Beecher

[RBW] Re: How big a cog spread can you accommodate on a Quickbeam?

2019-02-01 Thread Jim M.
With 28mm tires, I could get an 8 teeth spread, but with fatter tires it
was max of 6 teeth. I have seen longer slanted track ends somewhere.

[RBW] Re: Dynamo Hub Frozen?

2019-02-01 Thread Shoji Takahashi
I experienced the connector spinning on a dynamo hub-- I can't remember if
it was SON or SP. It happened because I changed the tire and didn't tighten
the axle enough. There was enough force to hold the wheel in the dropout,
but not enough to keep the connector in place. (I use Pitlocks instead of
QR.)

Per Andy Cheatham, phaps the cold caused some parts to contract more than
others, and a little tightening of the axle will solve it?

Good luck!

[RBW] Re: Dynamo Hub Frozen?

2019-02-01 Thread ascpgh
No such experience for me.

I have a Schmidt and the spade contacts for connecting the wires are in
unit with the face hardware of the fixed axle; binding force from the
bolt-on hub keeps them static.

The SP appears to have a black plastic ring inboard from the binding
hardware of the hub axle, on the end of the rotating hub body. Perhaps the
deep cold caused contraction of that ring's material to close on the end of
the rotating body enough to rotate with it.

Trapped condensation that froze the two together?

Interested to hear the insights and experiences too.
