[RBW] Weird Comments from the Peanut Gallery...

2019-04-01 Thread Ian A
It's extraordinary how a negative comment (or one perceived as such) holds so
much power, when a hundred compliments go forgotten.

Think of your local waving and encouraging motorists and remember how much
respect is paid to you.

All winter long, mine is the only bicycle locked to the bike racks outside
work. Some of the employees disapprove of my choice "you must be able to afford
a car by now" etc., but others solicit advice on what bike they should buy so
they can start riding. In the first instance if the tone is not hostile, I can
explain how the ride home clears the stress of the day. For the folk asking
advice - I try to avoid giving any! I do point out the benefits of wider tires
and neutral riding position, but beyond that try to be non-committal. I am
encouraged by the interest though.

Even though it is quite a ways off. Specific rides planned/organized with

Planning on traveling from Michigan to attend. Not sure if I will arrive via

So proud of Grant and RBW for surviving for 25 years providing bikes, books,

Even the green crosswalks haven’t been corrected. At the Smithfield Street
Bridge where that ramp’s accessible it and an older sign tell you to cross, go
right then left on Fort Pitt Blvd., the old, traffic filled make-do route.

At the bridge I just went left a few feet on the sidewalk to the ramp then down
to the river. No more traffic lights or urban confusion l.

[RBW] Re: Weird Comments from the Peanut Gallery...

2019-04-01 Thread dougP
I had to read it a couple of times to see the "joke". Bicycle messengers
are used in many large US cities for reasons of speed & efficiency. On any
give day in New York, I'll bet quite a few of those messengers are
delivering multi-million dollar contracts, proposals, lawsuits, reports,
etc. You just encountered a provincial. If he rode to the PO on a horse,
(not unthinkable in many rural areas), would he take offense to someone
asking "Pony Express?".

dougP, (pedaling to the PO whenever I need to.)

Weirdest comment from the peanut gallery in a long while. I was packing up

After a few rounds of him trying to explain the “joke” as “that’s how they

not as good a joke as I thought,” my poor brain with all the noise (that no one

I failed at my usual smile and wave. This was stand there dumbfounded at the

stupid. It did that really well. Grin.

Re: [RBW] Re: To Helmet or not

2019-04-01 Thread Patrick Moore
I'll be sure to choose a modern helmet over a hairnet when I whack myself
over the head with an Indian club.

I'd rather say a prayer. (And I do, sharing The Deacon's proclivities. At
any rate, a brief prayer looks better than helmet hair and is guaranteed
-Amen! - more effective than an herbal necklace.)

Hi Andrew, good to see you on here.

I've moved out to Utah where there is much Rivendell bliss, but know of a
couple people that are what you are looking for in Tennessee. Look out for
Karl Worley, he's the owner of Biscuit Love and also has a couple Riv
bikes. I have bought a frame from him in the past and would think that he's
got a few more people to connect you to.

The other is Steele Palombo, who was in Tennessee this past summer but is
in Utah now, he may be going back. We built up a 650b Lotus last summer for
him to cruise around on.

If you're ever out this way, give me a holler!

Re: [RBW] Re: To Helmet or not

2019-04-01 Thread S
I don’t think anyone here believes a helmet offers a magical level of
protection in a serious crash. But as I and others have observed in this
thread, a helmet absolutely can keep your face off the blacktop. As I went
skidding along the ground in my last bad crash, I was grateful it was the side
of the helmet and not my face that was doing the skidding. And if you wear
glasses, a helmet can save them from smashing and sending plastic or glass
shards into your eyes. That’s nice as well. Also, helmets are so light and
vented these days that comfort seems a weak argument against wearing a helmet.

Having broken multiple bones in multiple crashes I am under no illusions as to
my fragility on a bike. Plenty of other parts can break besides my head, so
plopping a helmet on doesn’t make me into an instant daredevil. Helmets aren’t
a 100% solution but they do mitigate damage to a degree and for me that degree
is sufficient.

I was the Workshop Chair for the 1974 Great Eastern Rally in

helmets of the day, he concluded his presentation by putting the helmet
on, picking up an Indian Club and whacking himself over the head with
it.  He then offered the Indian Club to the audience members and asked
if any of them "would care to try that with your leather hairnet."   Not

[RBW] Re: To Helmet or not

2019-04-01 Thread Edwin W
Jeff,

I would add one under-studied disadvantage of wearing a helmet:
You are more likely to hit your head on things when you have a helmet on
than when you do not have one on. I have not seen this scientifically
studied (yet!), but I have experienced it myself. Your body is so well
trained to know where your head is and to avoid that thing hitting
something. Add 1-2" of plastic and foam around it and your subconscious
judgment is off. I remember hiking in a cave. I kept knocking my head into
things when wearing a hat. I took the hat off and I didn't hit it again.
Now, how many cracked helmets are due to this effect, I cannot say, but I
will bet more that one.
*This is NOT a reason to not wear a helmet if you are inclined to do so,
but one small disadvantage of wearing one.
I am more likely to wear a helmet when the risk is higher (in a criterium),
and less likely to wear it when the risk is lower (toodling in the
Netherlands) while biking, but walking or driving... no matter how risky
the situation is (driving in a snowstorm on unplowed roads, for example, or
walking right next to a busy street), I will not wear a helmet, and
(almost) nobody has ever suggested it.

[RBW] Re: To Helmet or not

2019-04-01 Thread lconley
I generally did not wear helmets for the last 50+ years of cycling, unless
required by an event or club. They did not have helmets when I started
cycling (other than the hard to locate leather hair net style), and once
they did, my head was too big and they did not fit well. I actually had one
of the very early open topped Skid Lids in the mid 70s - It was yellow and
matched the paint on my Paramount. A few years ago, during my three years
in Everett, WA, I drove down to Universal Cycles in Portland, they did not
have a helmet in the entire store that really fit me, one sort of fit, but
the salesclerk refused to sell it to me because he said that it did not fit
well enough. He told me that I needed a Giro Bishop helmet. I called around
and found one at another bike shop in Portland, and sure enough, it fit.
Recently I put a "Da Brim" sunshade on it and now I wear it, mostly for the
protection from the sun.

I spent some time in Amsterdam a few years ago - they generally don't wear
helmets and I haven't read anything about the Dutch cyclists having a
higher than normal rate of cycling deaths or injuries. I think Americans
like the illusion of safety - be it bike helmets or big SUVs.

2019-04-01 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Eric, I think the idea is “glimpse cognition recognition” (a technical term I
just made up). Riding down a trail, I am always scanning ahead, scouting my
line of travel as I impliment it. I don’t identify most trees as I pass, but I
do notice branches sticking out that effect my line and adjust accordingly.
Similarly with people walking down the road. I asses from a glimpse how much
space I will give them. Child(ren), dog, or group? A lot of space. Individual
lost in thier own world? A lot of space. Someone who sees me and waves or I
recognize? Less space.

Drivers do the same thing, and have developed a bias, so the theory goes,
against racing mentality cyclists. If I don’t LOOK at a GLANCE like a racer,
they give me more room. I have long experienced this. I get even more room when
I take the right wheel track on the road and wave and smile.

With abandon,
Patrick

Given that there’s so much concern out there about whether motorists notice
cyclists at all, it’s nice to see that some drivers (see item #5) pay so much
attention that they discern whether we’re wearing a helmet and adjust passing
distances accordingly. I wish that was the case, but I don’t think it is.

That’s interesting. I would have liked to hear that conversation. I was
initially against the idea, but after doing more research, I am no longer sure.
I still don’t think Rivendell should go to disc on all their bikes, but would
one disc bike hurt? No need to answer that question. “Selling a disc bike would
feel bad” is a good enough reason. I am just curious what the actual
conversation was like.

It’s complicated. I am reminded of that recent Tom Ritchey interview wherein he
makes a long and detailed case that steel forks are the best. And yet, Ritchey
sells no steel forks. That seems … odd? Sad? Confusing? To be clear, I don’t
fault Tom Ritchey for that decision. Selling carbon forks is the pragmatic move
and Ritchey Bikes seems to be doing ok financially. But, to me, it’s
disappointing, maybe even a little troubling, that a company would feel it has
to sell something it doesn’t really believe in.

Dear friends,

This is a fascinatingly humble and civil thread! ❤️

Two summers ago I decided to stop wearing a helmet after I realized that
mine was about 10 years old and I'd been told that they should be replaced
every 3 years. My B.S.-o'meter went off and since then I've been working on
gathering info about helmets: what they were designed to do, what tests
have been done to prove they work, and whether or not helmet mandates, such
as the one in Australia, are having an impact on bike-related injuries,
concussions, or fatalities. Here's my doc with lots of notes, quotes, and
links.

Jan has perfected a deadpan tongue-in-cheek seriousness of delivery and
a certain twisted April Fool logic that leads to incredibly convincing
and even disturbing April 1 articles.  Sometimes it's almost more
frightening than funny because it sounds so disturbingly real.  It never
took long to see that ShelBroCo products introduced on April 1 were
jokes, but here you really never know, not for 100% certain: there's

things are actually going."

Spring ... what now? Sardonic grin.

Hunqabeam likely weighs 2-3 times normal for all the frozen mud on there. So

[RBW] WTB: Small Saddlesack, Brooks cambium

2019-04-01 Thread Keith Weaver
Hi all,
I'm thinking I'd like to try a saddlesack for my 54 cm Riv Road. Of course,
it looks like the now discontinued small size would be the one for me. I
have about 9.5" between my saddle loops and the rear tire, so the new
BagBoy won't really work for me. Let me know if you have a Small size
saddlesack for sale.

The bike is currently running an older Sella Anatomica saddle that is at
the end of the adjuster bolt and still feels kind of saggy. I think I may
eventually get it re-covered, but in the meantime, I've been interested in
a Cambium saddle for quite a while. Does anyone have a Cambium sitting
around that they would part with?

On a related note, these parts are for the Road frame that I previously
posted about regarding my Albatross bars situation. It wasn't very
comfortable with those bars, likely due to the cramped cockpit and
relatively harsh ride of the Ruffy Tuffy tires when sitting up so straight.
This weekend I mounted a set of 46 cm Noodles that I bought from a list
member as a complete cockpit, with Tallux stem, Tektro brake levers,
Suntour bar-ends and multi-color bar tape. I rode it both days this
weekend, and I think I like this bike a lot more as a drop-bar bike. I'm
considering going for the Compass Chinook Pass EL tires once I wear out the
Tuffys, or just get tired of them. Now I just need to figure out what frame
I should get to put my Albatross cockpit on!

Cheers,
Keith

No doubt.
In that think twice vein, computer controlled auto shifting wouldn’t really
surprise me much. I believe electronic systems where you only hit up or down
shift and it decides when to shift just the rear, or to do a front / rear
combination are already coming to market. With gps, power meter, cadence, and
shifting systems all talking to a single “bike computer” all ready, can
automatic shifting be that far away?

This reminds me of an axiom from the Jeep world, if you'll forgive an

Myself, I like disc brakes, consider indexed shifting a requirement, but I
won't use any carbon fiber reinforced plastic (that last part is always

[RBW] Re: PSA: 2 Gus Boots For Sale on Riv Site

2019-04-01 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch

I doubt it's a black and white issue for Rivendell. From what I have read,
I think Grant sees bikes continually developing toward the e-bike model,
with more and more of the technology becoming "black box." You might argue
that disc brakes, in and of themselves, are not that. But taken with other
developments and trends, it's hard to deny that bicycles are developing
into something "less simple" than what many of us grew up riding and
wrenching.

Our culture is set up to believe in eternal progress, from the caves to the
stars (with a side trip to Mars, courtesy of E. Musk.) But there is
evidence aplenty that in fact this is not the way things actually work. In
the 1970s, Ivan Illich, in Tools for Conviviality, writes about watershed
moments--those points in time where a tool (and here he referred not only
to tools in the sense of a hammer or a bicycle, but also societal tools
like the education, transportation, and medical systems) reaches a kind of
sweet spot. After that, it starts to accrue complexity for the sake of
keeping itself going, essentially. Applying this theory to the marketplace,
since our economy is based on eternal growth, the products within must
constantly "improve" so we can keep moving toward the stars (and service
our debt--till we can't).

Now some will say that discs are an improvement, and they work, and are not
overly complex, what's the big deal. Well, if you've thought about where
bikes have been and where you see them headed and you care about that and
you have a company and you have a few principles, maybe you are thinking
that discs are a not so tiny step toward taking the bicycle into something
that, in some ways, is no longer a bicycle. And so, perhaps after talking
with family and friends, you decide, even though it might hurt sales, even
though it might contribute to an earlier demise to your company, to not
offer this feature on your bicycles.

I could be totally wrong and not even on the bases, but I think it's not as
black and white as hey, rim brakes have always worked fine, let's stick
with 'em, just because we're Rivendell and that's what we do. I think might
be part of a bigger picture view, and where the company wants to fit into
that. It could be a watershed line they just don't want to cross, for any
reason.

Or I could have inhaled a bit too much Boeshield this weekend.

[RBW] Jan’s take on transfer of motor racing bits to bikes

2019-04-01 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Given our discussion about disc brakes and Grant’s stalwart stand, this is
timely (indeed, check your calendar and your clock). Jan predicts anti-lock
brakes, anti-wheelie, and computer assisted auto shift. Rim brakes? Spokes?
Anachronism.
